This book has been so up and down for me, but the "twists" of sorts and bits of lore here and there made this worthwhile, but the "romance" going from hate/nothing to "When I f*** you, the walls will be shaking" is a tad much. Juuuust a tad.
I will give it some leeway that towards the end of the book, there was some kind of explanation as to why Kol would be so into her, but OOF, their chemistry really shot off to the stars in this book out of seemingly nowhere. Suri just keeps repeating how handsome he is and avoids looking at him, while he burns holes through her all the time, until we reach a point that Suri has to keep repeating the same (stupid) questions/remarks such as "I'm not blind, I know he wants me, but does he really want ME?", "Maybe it's just in my head", "He wants me!", "I'm so jealous, he must want Viantha!", "No, he is not into me, we only have a deal." again... and again... and again. And it doesn't get better when they talk about souls and how not having one is basically not feeling love and joy, so... what are we even reading then from his side? But more on that later!
So, apart from the romance which had its moments, but my enemies-to-lovers went up in smoke so fast, you had no time to blink, in this book we get to see a bit more of Kol's world and his sacrifices and dude has sacrificed a lot to get where he is now, so respect! We also get to find out more about his close people we know like Scilla and new like Nadrian (excuse my naming errors, I was listening to the audiobook, so I have to kind of guess) and I am more than satisfied in that regard. Execution can be choppy here and there, but overall, I could see a few of them as complete characters. Nadrian might be my favorite character so far, because he is hiiiiilarious!
Other than that, we mostly see Suri trying to sacrifice a lot on her side as well, allll the time. I get it, she also has skin in the game because of her brother, but truth be told, she keeps making rushed moves that always end up in her favor or she gets rescued. One or the other! There was especially this scene where Suri decides to see Rasel to steal his secrets and the whole thing was SO fast, SO random and SO convenient... that it kind of pained me going through it. Despite that, it actually had some nice narration, but so, so, so, so fast. And this is kind of the deal with Suri. She is always kind of lucky even when she is unlucky. Double-edged sword, but I admit that half of those things at least were a positive point, despite execution. The main problem would be the pacing as it is trying a lot of things in little time and it is often hit or miss.
Now, there is this thing with souls and how everyone can sell their soul to some fae for some favor or another, but it never really explains what it means to have no soul. Unsurprising to everyone, one of the main cast has no soul (but the unexpected part was the favor!) and you could literally tell no difference. If you are supposed to lose this warm feeling that gives you life and feel positive feelings... people are already feeling those without a soul, apparently. Once they get more into it, we see those glimpses of how there should be happiness there, but there is nothing, but it is not convincing. You cannot really care if you feel nothing and it mostly feels like a convenient tool to say how empty one feels because there is no soul. Purely a gimmick that makes no sense in this series, unfortunately.
All in all, this is a more solid 3 than before, so it is a bit less, but still pretty entertaining, especially if you consider it's a debut series!
