Full disclosure I beta read this. And got snippets fed to me on the reg during the writing of. And now I’ve ARC read it too. Clearly I’m in deep 🤣
Vivian is being hunted by someone either wearing a dead man’s face, or by the dead man himself because someone must have figured out necromancy. I’m not going to give you the answer here, you’ll have to read it!
Anywho, Adrian’s daughter, Kaia, is finally coming to visit him after a year of fighting for custody, so the timing of Vivian’s being stalked isn’t great for our duo but, villains don’t work to convenient timelines so whatchagonnado?
Vivian is kinda thrown in the deep end with the whole family thing, because she went from having just her sister to suddenly having Adrian, his daughter, and his mum all supporting her and loving her. And of course Vivian doesn’t feel worthy because she WAS the villain once upon a time. Truly.
We get a fair few flashbacks in this book, which help us understand why maybe-Jason is so intent on hunting her, but it also shows us how she went from supervillain to the Vivian we all know and love now. Side note, my brain is now trying to decide if villain Vivian’s name should be Villvian or Vivillain. Welcome to my mind.
There’s a sense of mystery, plenty of spice, we get some action, some big feels, and Kaia is adorable.
We learn SOME things in this book but not everything, and it is a sort of cliffhanger but since the final (final!!!) book is being released on the same day, you won’t have to wait! Like some of us did…
Vivian and Adrian are back together, but their HEA is still out of reach. An old ghost coming back from the past to hunt down Vivian. The darkness inside of her still rearing it's head demanding things from Vivian she doesn't want to give. More secrets about Vivian's past are revealed and she and Adrian need to stick together to find a way through it all. But will Vivian be strong enough? This series is getting wilder and wilder. I loved to see more of Vivian's past and her change since then. While Vivian is determined to keep everyone she loves safe, she finally has to accept that sometimes there's no way around letting somebody else help out. Book five leads to another cliffhanger which made me glad I already had the final book at hand to jump in right away.
The breath before the storm, this is pure anticipation for the final book in the series. Vivian is most definitely being hunted, tormented, and pushed to her limits with a confrontation that shakes her to her core, but the real depth and important piece of this read is that Vivian opened herself up to possibility and hope for the first time since Seth. She actually shared herself with her sister, showed Adrian the darkest parts of her, and she asked for help, all things that make the anticipation for the last book nail biting because with these final pieces of herself healing, looking ahead, and hoping for more she's never been more ready to finally put a lid on her past and I can't wait.
