At least that’s what her Mama calls her. When she’s not working at the family farm, Janie’s reading Gothic novels, and dreaming of a life outside her rural Vermont hometown.
A straight A student, Miss Fields earns a scholarship to the prestigious Winston College in the Berkshires. Working as an assistant at the campus library, she meets Aidan Reddington, a TA for the head of the literature department.
A budding novelist, the handsome graduate student pursues Janie for her knowledge and beauty. Their shared love of the written word ignites into carnal passion. ALL over the library. Oh, if only the bookshelves could spill their secrets??
Reddington invites Janie to the exclusive Winston Halloween Bazaar where fate will present her with a rare opportunity. Will she take the risk?
I'm always a bit wary of short stories because so often I finish feeling like there was so much of the story missing. This wasn't the case with Janie. I started this book thinking I would know exactly what would happen, but I was pleasantly surprised at how the story developed. Were there still parts of the story I wish could have been expanded? Yes. But, for a short story, Jaclyn Cohen has done an excellent job at creating a full and complete narrative.
It's the author's talent that made this so affecting. I want to point that out first. All that she did was on purpose to get these feelings and the short story across to the reader. She succeeded by miles.
This was a trip. It's only a few chapters but it was uncomfortable the entire time. It's Carrie-adjacent. It's choppy. It's cringe and shame and lusty desire. It tackles class and wealth, opportunity and earnestness. I almost wanted to DNF due to secondhand embarrassment, but she kept me hooked so I kept going to see where the hell this would end. It was disturbing and partly like a fever dream. It was some kind of compulsion. This book is much deeper than the cover suggests.
This author is so good that she plays the reader like an instrument. I CANNOT WAIT for her debut novel.
Janie goes through a lot in this short story. In many ways, she is naive and shy, but is starting to come out of her shell. She is a library assistant at a college and comes to trust Aidan. They begin a torrid affair, but maybe all isn’t what it seems? She eventually seeks out healing by jumping into another situation. I was really rooting for her to find happiness, and I hope she has. She wanted love and while she made some mistakes, I hope she finds her way.
This was a quick read, and I could have read even more. I liked the flowy poetic nature of the writing style. Janie, being a lover of literature, had a very distinct way of describing things. It kept me hooked throughout with some surprising twists.
This short story was one of a kind. Like nothing I’ve ever read before. Janie is girl on scholarship working at the campus library. This is where she meets TA Aidan. They start this secret relationship. He invites her to a Halloween party. It turns out he’s engaged to someone else. She seeks revenge.
I'm not usually a reader of poetry, so when I had a quick minute to read a sample of this book, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the poetic prose. The first few pages really piqued my interest. Not my usual romance read, for sure. But after reading the sample, I smiled, mused, and went on my way. Hours later, I was unable to stop thinking about it. Like it grew on me after a mere ten pages! Needless to say, after I downloaded, I devoured it in one sitting. Ms. Cohen's writing style tickled my literary geek fancy, doubly so because her characters are also literary geeks (I say that lovingly). Something about the imagery and the word play and the sensory details worked so well together, I was miffed when the story ended because I again wanted more. Between main characters Janie, Aidan, and Professor V, along with honorable mentions Freddy, Alfie and Fella, this small-town mountain tale won my heart. Yay to Janie for championing her own happy ending! Definitely looking forward to more from this author!
Janie by Jaclyn Cohen is truly one of a kind! I decided to ARC for her since I love her style of writing. This short wis about a woman named Janie. Janie works at the library and helps everyone she meets. Throughout the story you get to experience Janie and her love interest. If you’re a fan of Ice breaker meets little house on the prairie, then this is for you!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
This beautiful book will be available to purchase on October 17th on Amazon! I highly recommend to buy it before it sells out!
A dive into the head of a college student on scholarship reveals the trials and prejudice against those who are considered to have less, to be less. Janie is on scholarship and is helping Aidan with his research. She believes that he is hers and hers alone until a party reveals that he's a dirty liar. It was so great to see a female lead take charge and grab what she wanted from her life in such a visceral way.
Janie by Jaclyn Cohen is a fast-paced, captivating short story that balances emotional depth with plenty of steamy moments. Cohen's writing is sensitive and insightful, capturing Janie’s journey of self-discovery and identity with both warmth and raw honesty. The quick pacing and engaging plot make it an easy, enjoyable read, while the romance adds just the right amount of heat. It’s perfect for readers looking for a story that’s both heartfelt and a little spicy.
This is my first short story and I ate it. Thrice!! The first time, I haven’t read a short story in a while, so it felt like I was missing some bits and pieces and felt like I read it too fast. The second time, I was getting the feel for it and loved the mini flashbacks and how it felt more poetic than the first time. The third read, I loved it!! I loved how everything felt put together as a single and how it displays the “boy vs man” dynamic through the FMC!! Thank you, Jaclyn Cohen, for a great first short story and looking forward to more! 💼🏔️📝
First I want to start by thanking the author for the ARC copy of Janie. This short story was beautifully written and made you feel like you were reading a flawless mix between a classic and modern with just the right amount of spice. I do wish I could’ve rated this story 5 stars but just like most short stories I just feel like at the end I always want more from the story itself.
A short and sweet novella that is filled with hopes and dreams of a mountain girl. I liked the plot and how Janie goes through so much in such a short span of time but that doesn't stop her from achieving her dreams. Also lovely use of the Library ;)
For a short story, that was spicy! I’m giving it 4 stars only because it moved a little too fast at first. But I loved the inner monologue. It was short and sweet. :)
What a strange and wonderful little snippet of erotic Gothic fiction this is!
Janie is the narrator and her singular voice shows both her intelligence and her otherliness.
Janie is a scholarship student at a fancy college and she’s having a torrid affair (or is it a relationship?) with teaching assistant Aidan when he invites her to the Halloween Bazaar. It’s steamy 🌶🌶 and eerie and strange. My foreboding alarm came on early and stayed on. It’s very short - only 9,000 words and author Jaclyn quickly immerses us in Janie’s universe.
I can’t say more because of an excellent plot twist but this is a delicious and fast read with a satisfying happy for now. If you love a dark romance with more than a little of the morally grey, this is perfect!
Thank you so much Jaclyn Cohen for the ARC. Can’t wait for your world building in a full-length novel!
💙Age Gap Romance 🤎Student/Teacher Relationship 💙College Romance 🤎Mention of Cheating
Janie works in the college library where she met Aidan. They had a secret relationship until she found out the truth at some party. Janie found out that she was another woman. She wanted vengeance towards Aidan.
Janie helped Aidan's book, so she went looking for it. Janie ran into Dr. Vittorini and they shared intimacy. They were talking about getting vengeance towards Aidan. They didn't do anything in the book since it was a short story.
I don't understand why Aidan invited Janie if he was in a serious relationship with someone else. Like, what was he thinking? Janie and Dr. Vittorini seemed like they jumped each other after being along for a short time and talked about vengeance. That's it. Janie was treated differently because she was a mountain girl. I imagine Janie has an accent while reading this book. It was a random read.
I haven't delved into short stories often and I did like this. As I'm used to reading full stories I did wish there was more background to the characters and more of the story to continue, but this has left me wanting to read what happened next. The spice was good, the writing was poetic and I found it very easy to read and absorbed it within 30 minutes- I hope there's more of Janie to come!
