Renick, the fifth son of a dragon breeder, crashes into an unexpected adventure that challenges everything he thought he knew about dragons, history, and himself.
Stranded in the massive Helath forest, Renick meets two other passengers: Thane, a noble training to be a dragon knight, and Lainey, the orphaned niece of a healer. Together they survive an attack by vicious wolves, rescue a baby dragon with a broken wing, and escape from a band of dragon hunters as they make a perilous climb into the mountains. What they discover there will change everything.
Renick, Lainey, and Thane find themselves scrambling to prove worthy to live after rescuing a baby dragon and delivering it back to its family. Just teens themselves and far from home they never expected to be in this predicament, but here they are mining for nothing in the dragon mines awaiting their sentence. But when a cave in occurs and they stay behind instead of escaping like the others, will that help their case or just prove to the dragons more of their stupidity. This was a really good action packed, very suspenseful, dragon/human book. I was touching at times and infuriating at others, but so good you don’t want it to end and when it does you cannot wait for the next book to see what happens. If you like dragons you will like this book, it is not like all the others but is a really different wonderful change that is well worth the time and will have people looking for the next book, and if you are lucky enough to have gotten the audio version narrated by the awesome Fred Wolinsky than you are in for a treat as he must have a million voices, as he has a different voice for every character in the book, he is such a talented voice actor he transports you to Helath Forrest so you are right there with our friends and all of those dragons, it is so worth it if you can get the audio. I for one will be waiting for the next one to come out on audio, if you can’t wait the book and ebook forms are out now.
Renick’s new adventure is about to begin, an apprenticeship to get him away from his family and to increase his knowledge of dragons. The last obstacle is traveling to stay with his uncle. When the dragon carrying the travelers is knocked out of the sky and killed, Renick is stuck with a highborn named Thane, who thinks himself greater than the others, and Lainey, an orphan healer who talks too much. Together they have to brave the forest and try to make it home. But when they stumble upon a little dragon, he changes everything they’ve ever been taught about dragons and they will have to learn to work together to protect him.
The writing in this book is flawless! I love the language used to describe the different dragons and their culture. It was very interesting to learn about them! I admit I want my own little dragon now. The story has a fast-pace and flows well. Each individual character grows throughout the story and I really enjoyed reading about them! Even Thane, though he’s a bit stiff, I still liked him at the end. I look forward to reading more stories about these characters!
Dragon stories have always fascinated me and this one came to me as a free book on amazon.
Its about Renick who is apprentice on Dragon training, Thane a warrior and laney who is apprentice healer. The Dragon airship carrying these 3 gets ambushed and they are left stranded in a forest. They find a young dragon whose mother has been killed. Saving themselves from the Hunters and Horrin , the trio reach a the Dragon hideout. They come to now the Magic dragons are not dead. They end up becoming member of a dragon clan and Trusted of the Dragon.
The Book is short and sweet with the chemistry between the three the highlight of the book. The adventure part is not too great but still enjoyable. The language is simple and book moves at decent pace.
Some elements of the book and lovable, like the chemistry between Laney and Plyth. A dragon Gifting Heart Stone to laney.
This is a wonderful middle-grade story (characters are 12-16) that drew me in right away. The story about an ancient conflict between talking dragons and men was imaginative, and the conflict between the hunters and the children protecting the dragon added suspense and action. I'm anxious to read the second book in the series.
I read this book quite awhile ago and enjoyed it even more. The characters are so unassuming yet they have one thing in common and that's compassion, even Thane. There are plenty of dragons, all kinds and all sizes. Please enjoy and don't put it down until it's finished!
I loved this book. It seemed to be about children in an adult world. After their own personalities got straightened out, they had the heinous adult world which menaced them to worry about. The fact that the dragons were fictional, gave one freedom to just enjoy the book. I am heading for #2 as soon as I get it loaded .
I struggled with this book. There were parts I enjoyed very much, and other parts that just didn't do it for me. The writing was good, and the characters were pretty well developed, I just wasn't a fan of the story.
The book follows the three main human characters as they crash land, find a dragon, learn about the dragon and find a hidden dragon colony. They learn all sorts of things about dragons that are hidden from the world and it sets up a world where there could be a really fun/cool adventure with dragons.
I guess for a dragon book, I was expecting more action or adventure with dragons doing cool things, and that was missing in this book. I think there are definitely people who would love this book, and the only constructive thing I can say is that I think this book could have been reduced to half it's length, so after learning about the dragons, they then go on some kind of adventure with the dragons. I think my struggle with this book is just the amount of action I expect from a fantasy book, and especially one involving dragons. I think my review is more of a reflection of me and what I expect than anything that is 'wrong' with the book.
This book was a delight from cover to cover and will certainly delight younger (and older) fantasy fans, for couched within an outwardly straightforward tale are the elements that make for great fantasy - discovery, danger, evil, and an examination of the human condition in its many facets. The interweaving of dragon lore and the backstory of the falling out between dragons and humans is neatly woven into this tale, in which three young people are awakened to the magic of the dragonkind, many of whom are enslaved by humans.
Well written and captivating, I recommend Krista Wayment's work for readers and dragon lovers of all ages. You'll find yourself mining this story time and time again. I'm off to read book 2. Right now.
Three young people take a dragon glider flight toward a new starting point in their life. Little do they know that the major turning points of all their lives will be decided before they reach their destination.
Renick, Lainey and Thane meet an infant dragon just having lost its mother to a dozen dragon prize hunters. They learn that the little one can communicate with them in human language and comes from a fantastic hidden community of wild dragons from deep in the high mountains.
A well written fantasy adventure for young readers. I would have loved this read to me at bedtime when I was a child. The characters are well described and believable and the adventure that they are thrown into is a good one. Recommend
Good: Well written, some mystery, fun, bonding, truths, fables and dragons. It's worth the time to read. Good for tween and up so far. I look forward to the next book! Bad: Really left hanging without notice in the very last page!
Loved this book!! In a world where dragons no longer trust humans because of our greed, three teens prove themselves to be worthy of the trust that had been lost in the best possible way!
I found the premise interesting and the dragons adorable. The writing though! It was so bland and devoid of imagery that I had a hard time finishing the book.
