Merry Little Match

Rate this book
Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, this closed-door christmas regency romance follows Lady Clara Ashford as she turns her Yuletide house party into a daring scheme to save her family from ruin. When her plans clash with the infuriating and devastatingly handsome Nicolaus Croft, a battle of wits ensues—one laced with simmering attraction, festive chaos, and unexpected alliances.

An earl’s daughter should never be caught gasping at gossip, let alone cause it. But Lady Clara Ashford has always been a rule-breaker. Whispers of Clara's scandalous schemes swirl through the drawing rooms of London’s elite.

Infamous for her wild antics—from clandestine book clubs devouring Byron’s most daring works to her perpetually muddied hems — Clara’s escapades leave every mother in the marriage mart clutching their pearls in horror. But her reckless freedom comes to a crashing halt when she returns home to find her father gravely ill.

Suddenly, her family’s earldom is poised to slip into the grasp of a conniving cousin. Clara and her sister Evie stand on the brink of ruin right as Christmas approaches. Before their cousin Rupert can force Evie to marry him, Clara must meddle her way into a love-match for her sister during the Yuletide festivities at their estate.

However, she didn’t account for someone determined to thwart her at every turn. When the infuriating Nicolaus Croft uncovers Clara’s plans to ensnare his friend, they are caught in a battle of wits.

As Christmas balls turn into scandalous disasters and mistletoe mischief abounds, Clara must battle both her cousin’s dastardly plans and her own attraction to Nicolaus to save her family before it’s too late.

What Readers Are

"This is a book where I can say that I loved every moment. There were Christmas elements; there were heartfelt moments; moments to laugh and moments of such depth that caught me by surprise."

"This cozy Christmas romance has all the makings of a picturesque holiday. There’s late night baking, ice skating, caroling, dancing, and just enough well placed wagers to keep things interesting. I love the close family interactions and how Clara and her family take care of each other. Books about sisters are always the best. Clara and Nicolaus have a delightfully fun way of bantering and competing over every moment that balances the sweeter, tender romance of Evie and Theodore."

"For fans of Jane Austen, Bridgerton, and A HOLIDAY BY GASLIGHT, Merry Little Match delivers a heartwarming closed-door Regency romance full of Christmas cheer."

"This book was exactly what I needed to get into the Christmas spirit – from the cozy, festive atmosphere to the heartwarming characters. The pacing, the setting, and the overall vibe of the book are just magical – I felt like I was right there in the story, surrounded by all the Christmas magic and holiday wonder."

"Clara is a character I immediately loved from the first page- she's so dynamic, fun, and full of life - completely unrestrained by society's expectations. There's amazing character development that doesn't dim her light or try to make her "less" in any way. Her sister Evie is all sweetness, quiet strength, and responsibility. And the best part is you get to see her love story too (and it honestly had me swooning just as much as the main romance)"

This heartwarming Regency holiday romance will captivate readers who love clever, rule-breaking heroines, dashing and reluctant heroes, and humorous enemies-to-lovers dynamics.

“You might not realize it yet, but there’s nothing like a bit of chaos to warm that soul of yours up.”

🎄 The vibes:
- Regency romance
- Christmas at an English manor
- Witty banter
- Slow burn
- Matchmaking
- Closed door

🎄 My thoughts:
The setting is December 1866. When the Earl is suddenly bedridden and gravely ill, all is at risk for his wife and unmarried daughters. Lady Clara is desperate to help her older sister Evie avoid a forced marriage to a conniving cousin, and Clara will do whatever it takes to ensure that Evie finds freedom and maybe even true love.

🎄 There’s matchmaking. There’s a Yuletide house party. And there’s plenty of tension as Lady Clara ends up clashing with Nicolaus Croft, one of the party guests, at every turn.

🎄 Well this was a delight. I love Celine’s writing style in this. The way she wrote this book made it feel like I was there. I could SEE it all in my mind. There was such a wintery, festive setting which I loved.

🎄 Theodore. Love. Evie. Yes. Clara. Obsessed. Nicolaus. 10/10. Across the board, this book had a witty charm about it. The humor was so subtle but definitely there, and I found myself grinning so much through the interactions between the characters.

🎄 Clara and Evie reminded me SO much of Anna and Elsa respectively. I could see the personalities of both Disney sisters I love reflected in these book characters. The sisterly bond was so sweet and one of my favorite elements.

🎄 The family relationship, in general, was so precious. The love between Countess Ashford and Lord Ashford was the purest type of love and made me feel all the feelings. The side characters made this story feel full and well rounded for me.

🎄 This is a book where I can say that I loved every moment. There were Christmas elements; there were heartfelt moments; moments to laugh and moments of such depth that caught me by surprise.

🎄 And don’t you dare get intimidated to read this because it’s regency! It’s a book that I think so many will enjoy.

This was a hard book for me to read. For having been in Clara’s situation for most of this year to not having the happy ending that she did. But in a way, it wrote about the same thoughts and feelings that I was feeling and that was something that helped me.

Well this was utterly charming and a great debut and an author I can’t wait to read more books from. I loved the holiday setting with the house party and all the moments in between. I often think a house party plot lacks something and I did not feel that here at all. It was well balanced with moments that kept you engaged.

The writing style did take me a bit to get into and I kind of wish it was all from one POV. It constantly rotated from paragraph to paragraph and it interrupted the flow a little. And I just found the antagonist to be trying a bit too hard.

I loooved Clara and Nicolaus’ romance and how swoony it was!! The kisses were HEATED and I was given a ball scene that made me melt. All top notches for me. I loved the little dash of enemies banter and how sweet and strong both characters were. There’s solid character progression and growth throughout.

Plenty of Christmas cheer and this is your friendly reminder that historical romances are worth the read!!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Christmas Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low

I was given the absolute privilege of Beta Reading this book, and I can promise you from the bottom of my heart, that this is everything you could wish for in a novel. Imagine Brigerton at Christmas, with a perfect enemies to lovers, banter filled romance that lights up the page. You will laugh, you will cry, you will kick your feet giggling. A joyous escape for the festive period that encapsulates these heartwarming moments, whilst delivering a poignant and deeply relatable story, with realistic characters that will stay with you long after you have finished reading. A gem of a novel, that I could not recommend enough.

2.5⭐️ This book had its moments, but it was mostly a flop for me.

The story was really hard to follow with the author switching from character to character within the chapters. One paragraph it would be following Clara, the next it would be following Evie, then Nicolaus, and so on. Sometimes even mid-sentence it switched up. Then you would forget who the author was even talking about or whose perspective it was.

This also needed some serious editing. It was pretty poorly written. I think the story was cute, but I struggled to follow along and found myself skimming. Because on top of the unedited aspect, it was pretty boring. I wanted a cozy Christmas regency and it just wasn’t that.

The language the people spoke was definitely not with the times. There was some modern language throughout which also took me out of the book. I like reading a regency for the refined language and etiquette. We didn’t get that.

I just wanted more. I didn’t love the characters, Rupert was pure evil and I just could not read the parts where he was present. They were hard to get through. And it was just overall boring.

Content 💋:
- Kisses only
- Mild infrequent language (2 uses of d**n, 1 use of a** and h**l)

Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)

With her father deathly ill and an evil cousin threatening to throw them out on the streets, Clara Ashford is determined to save her family this Christmas. As guests arrive for the family's annual house party, Clara must find her sister a match. Unfortunately, Nicholaus Croft stands in her way. Can she face off against her foe and save Christmas, or will Clara be forced to admit defeat?

I must say, this book had me hooked for the first 75%, and I was loving the dynamic between Clara and Nicolaus. Their bickering was fun to read, and it was obvious that they secretly were drawn to each other. I also liked Evie's side romance, as well as the sweet moments the family shared as they waited to see if Lord Ashford would recover or get worse. This book had such a strong 5 star potential until several things began to affect my enjoyment of it. First, there were several errors that should have been caught in the editing process. Then, there were some historical inaccuracies in regards to rules of propriety. But the thing that finally brought this below 4 stars was when cousin Rupert's storyline took an unexpectedly dark turn. Some of these things wouldn't normally bother me, but it was just too hard to overlook them in this case. I definitely think this author has great potential and would love to see what she has planned next, but I highly recommend a more thorough editing process in the future.

⭐️ 3.5 for me
spice level - heated kissing
language - mild
content - injury, serious illness

This is not a perfect book, but I enjoyed my time reading it. Although the Regency setting was important for the plot, I did not find that the Christmas setting was. Any other season would have probably worked. So if you’re expecting a heavily Christmas-themed story with the title, don’t. I did like the character arcs and felt a connection to MCs.

“Don’t let fear be louder than your heart.”
5 ⭐️‘s! Oh my, can I just say I’m literally obsessed with this book! Merry Little Match is the perfect Christmas read if you love regency romances with witty banter, stolen kisses, close family bonds, and laugh out loud moments wrapped up in a perfect Christmas bow.
If that’s not enough, then imagine Princess Diaries 2 meets Pride and Prejudice sprinkled into a Bridgerton ball (just one that’s PG). The storyline is engaging with beautiful imagery and well rounded characters that it makes it so easy to devour the whole book in one sitting. Regency romances are a comfort for me and Merry Little Match will now and forever more be a favorite Christmas reread! 🤍

3.5 Stars. A Victorian Christmas romance that was quickk and cute, but was missing something for me. There were some good moments but the pacing was a little weird and I didn’t vibe with the writing style.

This was such a cute and cozy Christmas romance. I loved the humor and felt the stakes our heroines were facing. I also loved that this story showcased the importance of love between family members, and didn’t just focus on the romance of it all. I particularly loved the terrible carolers and the green fire.

A fun debut by Celine! My only criticism is that it probably needed another round of edits. But the pacing was thought out, the banter was fun, and I enjoyed the escape of it all. I’m looking forward to seeing how Celine continues to grow as an author.

start to end: 10/10

I have to admit my bias, as the author is a friend of mine, but aside from that this is the perfect christmas romance.

the way Celine creates such a detailed vision with her writing is truly magical, and I thoroughly enjoyed each piece of this story. If you’re looking for something to get you in your warm and feelies for the holiday season with a “can’t put down” book, you’ve found it. I truly hope she continues her pursuit as an independent author because it would be a disservice to readers to not have the opportunity to read her work.

Merry Little Match by Celine Rachelle
If you are in search for a cozy, elegant, Victorian Christmas Romance set in the 1866 look no further. This is the perfect Christmas Romance to read during this season. Not only does it have romance, but it's a book that stands its ground with family. The book has its main character Clara Ashford who is the youngest of the Ashford Manor. I find her so bold, caring, loving and protective of her family especially of her older sister Evie May. It is until she runs into with Nicolaus Croft during the annual Yuletide and Christmastide. I honestly loved Clara and Nicolaus's banter towards one another. I felt like they went from enemies to lovers. I really LOVED this book especially the ending of it had me full of excitement and joy. One thing that I found so fond was her love for her father Lord Ashford. I along with the author can relate with Clara. Nothing can replace the love that a daughter has for her father. Everything was just perfect beside my dislike for Rupurt.

Thank you so much to the author for letting me read arc of this wonderful book!

It has all the elements that I want in a book …but make it Christmas. It was genuinely funny. I laughed several times, yet the story never felt silly. It had such depth in the middle of the most beautiful descriptors and prose. I felt immersed by the sights and sounds and smells of Christmas at Ashford Estate.

I digress, but I hope you try this one. Also, it’s on Kindle Unlimited, so you basically have to.

I was hoping to feel differently about this book than I do. Sadly, I almost DNF multiple times.

First, I should say, the premise of the story was really cute. The problems at hand had a lot of potential to carry the story and the setting was really beautiful. (Hello, the cover? It’s beautiful and reflects the vibe you find inside. Very Christmasey!) I just think it was poorly executed.

The characters needed far more development. I think a lot of things were assumed by the author. That us readers would understand why the characters acted the way they did, but there wasn’t much to go by. Even the main characters being “enemies” didn’t make much sense and their journey to liking each other didn’t have much power either. There were inconsistencies on information given as well. Multiple times, I thought “Wait, didn’t he say that earlier” or “oh I thought he wasn’t supposed to know about that yet.”

Outside of some formatting and editing errors, the inside of the book was beautiful as well and the characters were cute. Also, one of the less likable characters brought some humor to the story.

My main complaint is the characters arcs felt more like a rollercoaster shape with lots of question marks. So, because of that, I didn’t connect with the story very well. It wasn’t my cup of tea, but maybe it would be yours. It’s an easy read with nice Christmas vibes!

Unless you’ve been buried beneath a mountain of wrapping paper and sugar cookies, you probably have heard the buzz going around for this book. And if you have been waiting to see if it passes the Christmas magic test and I am here to give you two thumbs up!

This is a sweet, endearing, and fun holiday story. You get two sisters, a house party, a dastardly family relation coming to rain on the parade, an enemy who may just be the hero in disguise, and lots of banter and tension.

So go grab a cozy blanket, some hot cocoa, and cuddle up with this entertaining story.

MERRY LITTLE MATCH is simply just the happiest, most cozy Christmas book. I read it over the Thanksgiving holiday, and the vibes were EVERYTHING I wanted them to be. I was able to just immerse myself in the story, and it's such a fun, enjoyable one!

MERRY LITTLE MATCH is a regency Christmas romance set in England in December 1866. When the earl of Ashford falls ill, Clara's future is at risk--and so is that of her sister, Evie, and her mother, the countess. Clara comes up with a Christmas scheme to save the family--help her sister find a love match during the annual multi-day Christmas celebration held at their estate. When she tries to set her sister up with Theodore, a handsome and flirtatious suitor, Theodore's irritatingly handsome friend Nicolaus seems hell-bent on preventing the match. There's ice-skating and dancing and mistletoe and couples figuring out their feelings over the Christmas season.

This book is incredibly charming and witty. The humor is so clever--I was smiling the whole entire time! It's threaded through the narration itself, and I loved that. I also loved the characters and the dynamics between them. The banter is top-tier. I also found the book to be so well-written--I kept highlighting passages that had writing craft that I admired.

As the author posted on her IG account, this is a closed-door romance. But like, they're pushed up against the door ... kissing.

Totally recommend if you're looking for a book to bring some Christmas cheer to your December! I think this may be a new annual Christmas read for me.

I am a total sucker for great banter, and Merry Little Match is the absolute chef's kiss of fantastic loathe to love banter. Clara Ashford is a whirlwind of her own in regency London set to send the aristocracy in tittering fits due to her antics. After her father becomes ill, Clara and her sister Evie are at risk of losing their inheritance to a slimy cousin who only wants Ashford manor and the money that comes with it. What better way to chase the chill of winter and the potential of life changing events than to host a two week long Yuletide fest. Dancing, music, feasting, perhaps a little matchmaking, joy and fun.  Although the future may seem bleak, Clara will try and use the Yuletide fest to find a match for Evie, and save both of their futures. The terrible carolers who wouldn't take the hint and stop? Priceless. Dinner and dancing. The grumpiness that is Nicolaus?  I want to just ruffle his hair and watch him 'Harrumph', and storm off. Theodore always having his back, and being the one who convinced Nicolaus to go to the party in the first place. Clara and Nicolaus always having the perfect barbs for each other, even when they're literally falling down on ice. The friendship between Evie and Theodore was perfect. I loved the scene of Evie painting at the window, with Theodore watching. The comfortable silence while he watches her completely absorbed in her art, and him content to watch. Did I mention the banter? The banter. Ohhh the banter leading up to that scene in the garden. Absolutely perfect.  Celine has taken all of the elements of the perfect Christmastide scene, and has filled it with charm, and gave it life. It was easy to imagine myself sitting down at dinner, dancing to the music, soaring across the ice on skates. The perfect cozy read for the upcoming Yuletide season!

Pride and Prejudice and Christmas. Clara witnessed Nicolaus' most embarrassing moment, the last thing he wants is to be stuck at a house party with her for 2 weeks. Clara just wants to find a love match for her sister before she is forced into a marriage of covenience. When she tries to play matchmaker, Nicolaus will do anything to stop her meddling with his friend....
But...what happens when these two clash? After all, those who play with fire...

I loved this book. Such a creative retelling of a very loved, well-known book. The characters were fresh and the depth of even some of the more minor characters was amazing. I laughed out loud during one particular scene (🎶🐕🔥) and truly felt what they were feeling. Add this one to your cozy winter reading list!

Cozy Christmas Read for the WIN

This book was so cozy!! I'm not a regency romance kinda gal, but I love Celine and the Novelbound podcast and HAD to support her. The way this book just wrapped me in a warm blanket, I SWEAR! I have been down with a cold the last 2 days, and I used that time to finish it up. I think it healed me. Not really, I wish, but it was so good! The enemies to lovers - exquisite! The banter - chef's kiss! The sisterhood - please! Perfect for this wonderful holiday!

Merry Little Match is just what you need for a cozy Christmas read.

This book PULLS YOU IN! You will feel like you are in Ashford Estate, taking in all the scenes and scents of Christmas. The relationship the Ashford family has with each other is so real and raw that you'll never want to leave. The banter between Nicolaus and Clara is so perfectly balanced by the tender moments between Evie and Theodore. I absolutely loved everything about it and couldn't recommend it enough!

**i received this book as an ARC in turn for an honest review**

I absolutely LOVED this book so much! the banter, the overall chemistry between Clara and Nicolaus was absolutely 👌

Clara and Nicolaus ❄️
the banter and chemistry between the two were amazing. I loved the bridgerton bits and pieces throughout the book. the Romance wasn't rushed and wasn't/didn't seem forced at all.

their meeting at the beginning was rough and tiresome but throughout the book they slowly fell for each other. I'd say they started out as enemies and ended up as lovers ❤️

Clara is strong and independent and is always looking out for her sister.

Nicolaus seems a bit shy, reserved, and quiet.

Evie and Theodore 🎄
I loved how they fell for each other and would love to see a POV of Evie and Theodore possibly. throughout the book, the overview of their relationship grew and became so much stronger by the end. they pined for each other in many different ways. friends first, but that's what made it even more amazing.

Evie was trying to protect her family by trying to do the thing she thought was the right thing. this shows she is strong, brave, and steadfast.

⭐️
Rupert got on my nerves!! I disliked him the entire time. he was rude to everyone and always got his way with everything. he made Evie feel uncomfortable, but he knew that. I'm glad he got what he deserved.

if you haven't already, I recommend you pre-order this book! ✨️🎄✨️
