The knowledge to reverse her mother’s curse lies just across the barriers, but so do new prophecies that resurrect even older threats…

With Mayvus gone and relative peace restored, Aeliana must find her place in a foreign nation as the high priestess’ daughter. But her mother’s mind seems broken, and the research Mayvus left behind makes Aeliana suspect the evil priestess isn’t actually dead.

After leaving home as a traitor, Gaeren relishes the chance for a fresh start without expectations as prince and throne warden. But when his sister welcomes him back, he questions whether he can do more good for the people by his sister’s side or among them supporting Aeliana.

When they discover Mayvus is not only alive, but her life force is intricately woven with Aeliana’s mother’s, they set out to break the curse that binds the priestesses. But answers lie across the barriers in foreign nations, and the hunt for the ancient relics that take them there holds prophetic dangers of its own. If they can’t reverse the curse before Mayvus’ reach exceeds their fragile defenses, sacrificing Aeliana’s mother might be the only way to save the nation they love.

Salt in the Seas is book two in The Half-Light Chronicles, an epic fantasy series with adventures at sea, prophecies, curses, slow burn romance, and the hunt for ancient relics. Book one, Blood of the Stars, was a semi-finalist in the tenth annual SPFBO competition.

Karyne Norton continues her reliably lovely-and-oh-so-readable prose in The Half-Light Chronicles with her second book, "Salt in the Seas."

I enjoyed the direction this book went, with a short breather at the beginning as the characters reset after the incredible effort at the end of Book 1. For a little while, you can see the potential for the world to be happy, and then Norton ruins it and puts them on an epic quest. :) I loved the travels in this book, the new places and peoples and challenges. It forced some difficult choices while slowly raising the stakes once more as evil reasserts its chokehold on the world.

Above all, this book was about self-determination. So much of the first book's plot happened the way it did because one person made choices for another, a hundred times over across many people. Blood bonds create obligations that are hard to tease apart inside one's heart, and oaths do the same inside one's head. Aeliana, Gaeren, and others all have to come to terms with the connections between them, both broken and intact, and move forward together somehow. There are tradeoffs, for oftentimes choosing one path helps one person while potentially hurting another, and there are risks, for they do not know their enemy's choices. I also really enjoyed spending time with my favorite character Gaeren and really seeing him become the man he should be. His relationship with Aeliana is exactly what it should be: unconditional.

Norton expands her world-building in its lore, its geography, and its characters in this book. I raved about her world-building before, and now there's even more to love. I deeply enjoyed getting to know Velden and Orra better, and finally truly understanding Gaeren's backstory. The slow burn is perfect for character-driven epic fantasy; it never takes away from the main story but has you cheering for the characters. As usual, Norton nailed the ending, and I cannot wait until Book 3!!!

P.S. I had no idea there were interior illustrations when I bought this book, but WOW they are amazing!!!!!!

I read this chonker in three days! The writing is tight, the characters are complex, the pace is steady, the plot is twisty—and the world-building will make you soar!

And that ending… Where’s Book Three?? 🤯

Norton has penned a compelling and intriguing story rife with political intrigue, interesting magic, and many characters you root for or love to hate. My favorite is Durriken— *cough* I mean Gaeren. Okay, no. It’s Durriken, because anyone who knows me knows I love dragons. But that aside, it’s Gaeren who drew me in the most. He’s a strong, brave, honorable young man, with a heart of gold, and he deserves the world!

This book will definitely tug at your emotions across the whole spectrum. I yelled, I cheered, I rolled my eyes, I laughed—all the feelings a good book makes you feel. The characters are wonderfully flawed—they make mistakes and bad judgment calls—or they rise to the occasion and make the right call, at great cost to themselves. Or…well, suffice it to say, my nerves were often on edge. I confess I yelled at the FMC Aeliana a LOT. I’m looking forward to her further growth, and I love her compassionate side.

The lushness of the world structure is breathtaking. The unique cultures and creatures are vivid and fun. The history is fascinating.

Also, Durriken. 💚😉

Overall, a highly recommended read!

Content: War violence/death, injuries related to Blood Magic, no strong language, no spice.

Aeliana and Gaeren chase starbridges and try to save the world while dealing with family drama (that prophetic sister is a piece of work) and working out how they feel about each other. My favorite parts of the story involved the sea-people and the dragon (who didn’t get nearly enough airtime). The ability of the evil villainess to secretly brand and control people resulted in an icky amount of distrust among our band of plucky heroes, and there was a sharp turn toward darkness at the end of the book, but at least Aeliana got to ride the dragon! Hoping for more dragon-riding in book 3.

An excellent sequel that dives deeper into the already in depth world building, with great pacing despite its length, interesting characters, and an intriguing slow burn romance. Still suitable for a teen audience. Can’t wait for the final version!

This is a sweeping elaborate saga, one that starts off at a slower pace, which is the norm in this genre, and accelerates so smoothly, you don't even realise you've gone from zero to a hundred! Only your heartbeat is testament to that... This author is one of a kind, with such sublime storytelling, the book unravels like a frayed tightrope and I'm clinging onto every word lest I fall! Or miss anything....

My word do I love the richness and diversity of the characters! Karyne pens them so vividly I can see every eyelash blink, I can see their inner turmoil, so much so, I'm going to start gushing in a minute! Heck, you can't blame me, once you've met these characters you'll totally understand! The regrets they harbour, the remorse that eats at them, their vulnerability, insecurities, all lend to the fact that they're faliable, even the mighty who have fallen are flawed, they all seek redemption, peace, unity. Emeris, her mind broken after all she had to endure at the hands of Mayvus, Durriken, held captive for so many years, Aeliana, kidnapped, used heinously, Gaeren, a Prince who'd rather be anything else, Orra, a Star who seeks to correct her error, Enla, a queen in waiting, oh glory, way too many to mention, way too many have wormed their way into my soul!

Oh my, what vulnerability Gaeren shows, seeking purpose, trying to do right when his own parents oppose the idea. These parents....grrrr.... cold, hard, unaffectionate, yeah, all round non parents! And the bonds, geez, they confuse the heck out of him! The bonds he has, one from infancy with Lenda, one made to protect Aeliana rather than control, one he doesn't want, the other.... his exact thought was "he wasn't sure what Aeliana was to him, but "more than bondmate" felt right". As to Aeliana, she's overcome so much, her growth, internal and magical is, well, magical! I loved seeing her recognise how she's evolving, she might not understand it, but the strength in her builds and builds. She too is vulnerable, faliable, flawed even, but finally reunited, rekindled, reignited with who and what she's meant to be, has a profound effect on her. There is soooooo much emotional turmoil in this book, hold onto your heart, it might just shatter! Well...it WILL shatter....

Now that Mayvus is no longer in control, presumed dead by most, the horrors that she inflicted are slowly being uncovered and they're even worse than what anyone thought. Aeliana is slowly uncovering exactly what dreadful means Mayvus used, experimented on, how she hurt, manipulated, abused everyone. Although she tortured and controlled many, forcing them to do whatever she demanded, by inflicting her brand on them, the one who touched me the most in the previous book was Durriken, the dragon. Healing from that trauma was a hefty task so when Durriken shows so much patience with a child, well heck, my heart swelled with joy. He's STILL not on board with Aeliana's bond on him, not that I blame him after held captive by exactly that.

Karyne propels the characters into the limelight, by description alone, which is frankly quite astonishing. To be able to see, feel, like, dislike, empathise with, revile against, IS astounding, yet I did, every step of the way! Although I really enjoyed all the characters and the depth they show, my very very favourite must be Felk and the winex, a race of beings that have a month's life cycle, reborn each time, with no memory of what occured, who they met, who they knew. Until Aeliana and Brannick gave them hope, so emotionally heartening. When I say this is an immersive read, I mean it, I was entagled in all their lives, some I wanted to embrace, some I wanted to spit on but each one will remain an indelible part of me.

This is a book full of searching, searching for the truth, searching for answers, searching for identity, searching for a means to end, searching, searching, searching... some answers they find, others set up more questions, some even confuse them more. The level of depth to the plot, the incredible world building and immersive characters is remarkable, truly astoundingly and utterly captivating. Combined with the unexpected, the twists and the storytelling of this incredibly talented author borders on obsession for me. And if I don't stop now, I'll probably end up writing another 5000 words! THAT'S how much this book has riveted me, THAT'S how much I feel I'm lacking in conveying the magnificence of book and author alike!

Wow! What a great sequel to an amazing book 1! This series continues to get better as it dives deeper and grows at the same time. I think my favorite part was the expansion of the world building. Norton is an ace at world building. You can tell she puts time and passion into it because the details are descriptive and meticulous. I loved exploring new parts of this world and meeting new groups of people. With all the different settings, people, species and cultures, this series is giving me strong LOTR vibes.

Speaking of worldbuilding, can we talk about the magic system again? It continues to be one of the more fascinating magic systems I’ve read recently, and book 2 introduces new depths to it as Aeliana explores her powers more. And I loved how Aeliana’s magic helps her uncover parts of herself and who she is.

As far as pacing goes, I thought a little momentum was lost in the beginning, and some parts throughout could be tightened some from too much inner monologue and people sitting around talking, but overall I thought it was great pacing for a high fantasy. And the stakes were definitely raised as the story went on, which helped create a sense of urgency in my chest as I read. The only other thing was that for book 2, I’d have loved a little more progress with the romance subplot. I love a slow burn romance, but a little more tension and growth in that area would have been nice.

And the ending was great! It was both satisfying and a little bit of a cliffhanger where I’m like “but wait…what happens next? Get me book 3 now!”

I continue to love this series and am adding it to my list of fav high fantasy series. Norton’s writing style is beautiful and flows in such a natural way to make it a pleasure to read. And the unique aspects, like the world, religion and magic system, make it fascinating.

A sweeping, epic fantasy sure to appeal to fans of Brandon Sanderson.

With an intricate, well-drawn magic system and an epic cast and conflict, this Half-Light Chronicles series has everything I love in an epic fantasy. Complex characters with motivations that have them making choices that complicate their lives and twist the plot in a new direction. Magic that is complex with limitations and governed by well-drawn rules (think elemental magic with some different rules about how they can use it). And the conflict is on a broad scale—kingdoms and thousands upon thousands of lives are at stake.

I love the dragon Durriken and his relationship with Daisy/Aeliana. The theme that love is giving people and creatures choices and not forcing obedience runs richly through so many interactions in the story, including Durriken and Daisy’s.

Other themes and tropes I enjoyed in this series:
Found family.
Slow-burn romance.
Sisters.
Family drama.
Royal family drama.
Sibling loyalty.
The dangers of seeing into the future.
Who can you trust.
Forgiveness.
Grace vs guilt.
How God sees a bigger picture than we see.
How shame can mislead us.
Doing the right thing even when those closest to us might fight us.
Duty vs desire.

If you love epic fantasy, especially Brandon Sanderson, definitely give this series a try.

The second installment of The Half-Light Chronicles builds and expands on the foundation established in the first book, taking the world and characters to greater depths.
As Aeliana and Gaeren venture across magical barriers to foreign nations in search of answers, we get a broader view of this meticulously crafted universe of magic, politics, and adventurers.
From the royal palace to far-flung lands across magical barriers, each location has a distinct culture and atmosphere, making the journey both stunning and emotionally resonant.
Aeliana and Gaeran's growth feels organic and well-earned.
As with the first book, Salt in the Seas explores themes of identity, destiny, and the boundaries of loyalty. However, this installment delves deeper into questions of sacrifice, familial bonds, and the true meaning of courage.
For fans of epic fantasy who appreciate intricate world-building, complex characters, and stories that balance action with emotional depth, Salt in the Seas is an exceptional addition to an already promising series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this next installment in Norton’s Half-Light Chronicles series. All the characters I was hoping to see again (and some I wasn’t) made an appearance. Many questions from the first book are answered, but only for more questions to rise up in their place. Which is just as it should be for the story to move forward!

Our protagonists embark on a quest, but along the way there’s a heist, tragic misunderstandings, sea people (so awesome), a dragon bonding (so, so awesome), and a fantastic, only somewhat frustrating, dun-dun-dun moment at the end. I must warn you, this book also contains one of the most interesting and complex romantic scenes I’ve ever read (awesomest!).

My only complaints: I wanted more of the Sayhleens. I wanted to see everything about their corner of the world and have our characters stay there for a while. I loved the new characters we meet there and I wanted to understand them better. Hopefully we get to return to them in the next book.

Content: fantasy violence, death, and blood magic, although much less than Book 1.

I enjoyed this next installment of the series. Karyne does a great job of keeping you turning the pages with dynamic characters and an intriguing world. I wish I had more time to read so I didn't have to put this down as much.

She wraps several aspects into her book to make it a fantasy full of that genres elements:
an interesting take on magic from the stars that works in your blood
pirates
a dragon
kingdom intrigue
portals that connect the world

There's a lot going on, but you get lost even if you have to put the book down for a few days between readings.

I also love that she added a suggested reading order that includes a short story and novellas to the list. These shorter reads fill in more detail about a selected character and the world.

If you have not started reading this series yet, I suggest reading it in the order she lists. You must at least read Blood of the Stars before reading Salt of the Seas because one leads into the other.

I anxiously awaited the second book in this trilogy. I enjoyed it very much, not as much as the first, but it was a great continuation. We get to explore more of the divided lands and of course the plot thickens. For some reason, I wasn’t as excited about the segment on Sayhleen Island. I can’t put my finger on it, perhaps because most of the characters were, well unavailable. Trying not to include spoilers. After that, things picked up and I plowed through to the end. Loved the very end and now, the long wait for the next one. I should probably wait to read trilogies until they’re all published! If you loved the first book, you’ll want to keep going. Don’t hesitate to dive back in, no pun intended.

Book 2 in the Half-Light Chronicles keeps you engrossed in the world that Karyne Norton created in Blood of the Stars (Book 1). I didn't have to check the glossary as much this time as I knew the continents and characters better than I did in Book 1. There was more of Gaeren and Aeliana which I loved, plenty of suspense, and still many unanswered questions. She had amazing character development for so many different characters in this book, even the ones we only spend a page with. And because he is one of my favorite characters, I'm looking forward to Velden's short story! I won't normally pick up an epic fantasy, but I'm already eager for Book 3 in Spring of 2026!

I loved this book! This is the second book in the series, and picks up where we left off in the last book. This book was beautifully written, with amazing depth to the characters. One of the main themes of the book is the different characters are looking for their own version of freedom. A prince who has never had freedom to be himself because of his overbearing parents and their expectations of what their heir should do and be. A dragon who has done terrible things because he was branded by an evil person and wants to be free of the guilt brought about by actions he was forced to do. And a young woman who wants to be free of the burden that is put upon her by a group of rebels who would like her to follow in her mother’s footsteps and possibly lead them as a strong Vendaran woman. Plus so much more! This is about love, acceptance, healing and forgiveness of one’s own mistakes and past.

Wow! What a truly epic Christian fantasy! I loved the way the characters grew throughout the series, and learned to overcome their weaknesses and fears! There are dragons, celestial beings, fascinating creatures, and warring civilizations. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series with bated breath!

Book 2 does not disappoint! The plot is epic, the characters so much fun, and the themes are deep. I loved getting to explore another corner of this world and look forward to Book 3.

WARNING: The Half-Light Chronicles address blood magic and brands. I think the author handles these aspects of the enemy’s magic well.

Just in case anyone struggled upon this review without having read the first book in the series, I will intentionally leave this review for Book 2 vague.

Karyne Norton hit it out of the park again! I loved returning to this world and set of characters, while also getting to know new characters, lands, and cultures. This world she has created feels so vast with and I feel we have only explored a tiny fraction of what is there. Karyne skills at the slow buildup and character driven plot continues to improve from her already great first book in this series.

Karyne’s first book (Blood of the Stars), and this one both remind me of the show Stargate: relatable chargers you love spending time with (despite the life threatening drama), and the enjoyment of exploring portentously unknown land and cultures.

I love books that let me escape from the world but also realistic (not everything ends up with blue skies and rainbows and no consequences). Karyne definitely delivers on this.

The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because there were a few places where I felt the pacing could have been tightened up just a little. This is a very small issue that didn’t happen but a couple times. I also felt at the moments that the romance (which is slow burn but is very much interwoven into the characters and plot) detracted from the story at times. The characters would be in a race against the clock, or in the midst of a conflict, but would take time to discuss or internally ponder their feelings. (Again, a small issue that only happened a couple times, and I admit that I’m not huge on romance being a main plot element, so I am biased in this area).

Neither one of these minor issues lessened my overall enjoyment, and just like the first book last year, this one is definitely a contender for being my #1 read of the the year. I’m just sad I have to wait for book 3!

Aeliana and Gaeren may have defeated Mayven, but they still have their work cut out for them. Most of the starbridges are still missing, the rebels have differing ideas about how the land should be governed, while the royal family still clings to power. The duo are torn between duty and personal feelings, between different factions, between difficult choices.

This is a long book, with the story told from three main points of view. The second in a series of four (I think), this book expands nicely on the world-building and back-stories alluded to in book one. I really enjoyed the story, I liked the characters, the prose was excellent, and I look forward to reading more.

That said, I was frustrated at times with sudden changes in direction, and with the clunkiness of some of the plot developments. Overall, however, I would highly recommend this series.

Salt in the Seas continues the Half-Light Chronicles that began with Blood of the Stars. A fantasy adventure that feels more epic as the story progresses. I find myself continually impressed with how Karyne Norton's characters show growth and changes based on the events that have transpired throughout the series. Characters don't just move from story event to story event, but rather reflect upon those events and their own flaws (both real and perceived), and grow as people as a result. Characters who viewed themselves as week step up to become leaders. Characters question the morality of their own choices and change their behavior to fall in line with what they now believe is right.

I also have to admit that it took me way too long to recognize that the name of the mermaid inspired race, "Sayhleen", was a play on "saline" (i.e. salt water solution).

And I was not expecting book 2 to end the way it did. In a time with so many fantasy books following the same predictable story beats, it is refreshing when you find one that does its own thing.

The edition that I read was the "Sparkly Special Edition" from the Kickstarter campaign.
