Changes in Latitudes is Randall Denley's first book inthe Mike Reilly Mystery series. Mike Reilly has spent 40 years as a police detective; 20 of them as stressed head of Homicide in Ottawa. Now at 60, he is retired and idling in a tiny Caribbean island. After two divorces and several relationships that could not possibly last, he has sworn to learn from his past, take his time and treat women with respect. Now he is less that five days into meeting the lady of his dreams, enjoying vigorous sexual relationship and attempting to show respect.
The knock on his door brings the sleazy Jumbo Richards, ‘boss’ of the island who also runs the local Police Department. Jumbo wants Reilly’s help with special clients and special cases. Reilly has no interest in being a policeman again, especially associated with Jumbo. However, they agree on a random private detective relationship with Reilly accepting the cases, or not, and being paid by Jumbo’s special clients. The case is nasty. A tour ship is anchored in the bay. The lead entertainer has been killed. He is the son of the fleet’s owner who will be present in a couple of days and expects to judge and punish the murderer
Reilly faces a challenge. The body has been moved, the doctor is weak, the ship security is weak, and the captain will allow the owner to act as he wishes. Nobody wants the passengers to think the death is murder. The passengers are already antsy and will stay on board and quiet for no more than a couple of days, even with open bar. The scheduled sail termination is only two or three days off. The owner confides to Reilly that he purchased the fleet a few months ago and recently discovered a South American drug cartel is using his boats to smuggle vast amounts of drugs to Florida. The owner wants to get out of the drug business and is afraid the cartel will pressure him by killing passengers.
Reilly follows a standard case investigation. Besides the known challenges, he discovers that most of the useful witnesses are lying as are the senior security staff and the senior recreation staff. After some consideration and considerable planning, Reilly initiates a major activity. He calls in some favours, some police information and some activities from his local private detective cases. Despite the many lies, he gave some players directions with consequences if not completed. As darkness fell, he initiates the team. A broad suite of activity was executed with considerable success, some unplanned success and some surprise conclusion.
Denley writes in a clean, crisp manner. Regardless of what is happening the plot is always moving ahead. The mystery is always threatening and nothing is unearthed before its time. Without overdoing it, Denley makes no bones about Reilly’s link to Ottawa, Ontario. While Reilly is obviously male, many other major characters are female.
I enjoyed this book. A good fast paced and challenging mystery. The drama is not overdone but is gradually increased as Reilly unearths the plot. Four and a half stars.
Probably one of his best books! Been a fan of Denley since one dead sister, and I always look forward to his new releases and this one did not disappoint!
I was a tad worried about the change in scenery and it not being held in Ottawa but he made it work very well. I will admit there were a few somewhat stretched points but it ended up meshing pretty well in the end
Good work and can’t wait to read more about Mike Reiley!
