First of all I just want to thank the author for giving away a free copy of this book :D last year during the "Goodreads Giveaway" Sorry it took so long for me to post a review but better late than never right? so here it goes :D
I really like the whole story-line of the book. The hero gets bullied coz he's so smart,(very smart like smarter than me! haha)and the heroine comes to the rescue :) I like the part that both of them met without knowing each other. They were classmates before and now they're workmates. I also love the part where the author combined some romance on the story. Despite of everything they worked it out in the end. I love SciFi/Romance themed novels with happy endings so this is a BIG YES for me!!
REVIEW: FRONTIERS by JEFF W. HORTON. (CYBERSP@CE SERIES #2)
FRONTIERS is an exciting science fiction adventure about man's quest to reach the stars, and the reasons behind it: greed for new weapons technology vs. the impetus to acquire advanced knowledge. Henry is literally a "boy genius," seeded with intellectual and intuitive capacity by one who.intervenes "from elsewhere." Once into adulthood, he will be the chosen pilot of "Frontier," the space ship whose design had been gleaned from reverse-engineered alien technology. Hank' s flight will catalyze a literal new era for humanity.
The author provided a copy for the sole purpose of my fair and honest review, as a participant in the Making Connections blog tour of this book. No fees were exchanged.
I expected to enjoy this book a lot, but unfortunately couldn't. The idea is good, the execution is not bad, but definitely not for me.
First, the pacing is too slow for me.
Also, some characters seemed a bit too implausible, even for a sci-fi book, like the three years old baby prodigy who is fluent in English and Latin, and to varying degrees in Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Seriously? Besides, how can someone be fluent in Latin since it's a dead language and nobody speaks it anymore, maybe he was speaking fluently to himself in the mirror?
I was especially annoyed by the dialogues. All conversations were unnecessarily long, and looked like full transcriptions, including greetings that should normally be implicit ("Hi, Henry." "Hi, Uncle George."...). It's supposed to be novel, not a screenplay.
All in all, it felt like watching "Battleship" (2012): cliched military setting, stock characters, cheap dialogues.
I started reading this book a few months ago, didn't enjoy it; maybe I was not in the mood? Tried again yesterday, but still didn't like it; now I give up.
