Parenting a Child With Asperger Syndrome- Asperger's Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments
When parenting a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, one has to adjust any conceptions they have of raising a child, raising a family, and the struggles that are part of the growing process. A family with a special child develops and grows very differently from a completely normal one, so it’s important that parents are given the proper knowledge and tools to prepare for the journey ahead.

Grace Child, the author, writes in such a way that you won’t be wasting your time sifting through a bunch of useless content. You are going to get straightforward helpful tips to help you become the best source of support for your child.

Here are a Few Things From the Book
What is Aspergers?
Before you can do anything else, you have to know what Asperger’s Syndrome like the back of your hand. Knowledge is power, so the most effective first step is to educate yourself about what Asperger’s is and what it entails. So, what exactly is Asperger’s Syndrome?

Asperger’s Syndrome, or Asperger’s Disorder, is considered an autism spectrum disorder. This condition affects many aspects of life, such as social interactions, communication, relationships, and the like. Despite the fact that the condition was first conceptualized in 1944, the exact cause of Asperger’s remains unknown. Current theories suggest that it is rooted in genetics, though there has been no genetic cause identified thus far.

Currently, Asperger’s is considered a less severe form of autism instead of a completely separate disorder. As such, here are the identified symptoms and characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome that make the disorder unique:

Symptoms:
Social Difficulties Repetitive or Obsessive Behavior Limited and Focused Interests Anxiety or Depression Developmental Delays

How is Aspergers Syndrome Treated?
By using these treatments and implementing them at an early age, many individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome are able to lead fairly typical lives and are able to relate with others.

Treatments:
Social Skills Training Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy Parent Training Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Speech and Language Therapy

STEPS TO TAKE AND TIPS TO REMEMBER
Educate yourself Establish your own support system Select a medical professional you trust Create awareness for your child Be kind but firm with your child

If your child has Asperger’s, it is our hope that this book will give you the information that you need to develop your own strategies to effectively raise your baby, and to eventually give them their own tools to manage the condition.

This book was an Amazon freebie.

An exceedingly quick read--more of a primer pamphlet, really. If you have nary a clue about what Asperger's, this is a basic resource that could potentially prove useful as an introduction to the concept. The writing is concise, well edited, and impersonal in its presentation. Ten tips are provided toward the end, and I particularly appreciated the mention that parents need to be vigilant about their child's friends--ensuring that they aren't taken advantage of due to their lack of social awareness.

However, it is this reader's opinion that the book offers nothing one couldn't easily glean from a bit of light medical site and blog browsing. There are no humanizing anecdotes, individual accounts, or research journals cited to either justify the information or allow for any emotional connectivity with the subject matter. If you long to know where the author is coming from in compiling this information, you'll get no answers.

Additionally, readers who's parenting styles may include ANY form of physical discipline are likely to resent the author's repeated assertion that such methods are "never the right way." It would be interesting to be referred to some solid research regarding the effects of corporal punishment when it comes to children on the autism spectrum, but alas, this bit of lit provides only blanket statements rather than credible justification.

Great advice

Lots of great advice. This book was a comfort to me as I am awaiting a diagnosis of aspergers for my teenage daughter and the future is very unclear.

A short (30 pg), helpful, common-sense guide to parenting a child with Asperger's, I picked up free on Amazon. When I was mentoring autistic teens (about 10 years ago), I could have used a guide like this to help me train my student learners. I saw much of the behavior described: repetitive actions (hand washing), focus on numbers (for a student learning data entry), lack of social skills (reminding my student workers to say hello and goodbye), and observing the physical as well as emotional distance they put between themselves and others. I really liked the section on seting boundaries and helping the child with a routine. If you have a child or know of a child recently diagnosed, this would be a great introduction for you.
