This is better than #2. It's the best of this story series bunch. A gooey quick candy action read. All entertaining brief crisis and chaos with suppositions plus a great meal stuck in between the shootings. But honestly and I am honest, the writing itself is barely 3 stars. So- get your seat with your hands crossed on your flat stomach and look at your slender Seiko again. And again. And again.
The Hunt for Reacher series apparently comes endorsed and recommended by Lee Child, so when I was able to pick this up for free as a taster I jumped at it. I was somewhat disappointed, though, and while it wasn't bad I felt a bit let down.
It's not the absence of Reacher himself that disappointed me - I didn't expect him to actually feature, I read enough about the series to expect he would be a shadow on the periphery. Firstly, it should be noted this is a short read, and in all fairness that isn't my favoured format. I like a story I can get my teeth into. I think the biggest issue with me reading this, though, is that I've jumped into a series partway through, so there are a lot of characters and references that didn't mean a lot to me as I have evidently missed out on earlier events and backstories.
To be fair to the author, I intend jumping back to the start of the series and trying again. Playing catch-up part way into a series isn't always easy, in a shorter book I think it's virtually impossible as you don't have time to put the pieces together. More my fault than Ms Capri's.
I am a Jack Reacher fan and thought I would give this a try. Not disappointed but not captivated either. Maybe if I had started with the first book it might have been better. I like the shortness of the book but the plot line didn't make the tie back to Jack Reacher like I was expecting.
Number 1 in a Deadly Dozen collection - Capri contrives to get all her different series characters into one novella - complex little plot and not a bad read.
I enjoy Lee Childs’ Jack Reacher novels, but I wondered how a tie-in series would work. Diane Capri’s Jack in the Green is a short novella set around characters and events from the classic series, and introduces two FBI agents tasked with finding/stopping Jack Reacher… except he may be the good guy not the bad guy… and maybe he’s not the one causing murder and mayhem after all. It's a fascinating premise, powered by two well-drawn characters, and an enjoyable read.
The story’s short and simple, the characters are convincing, and the plot nicely drawn. It’s not hard to stay at least level with the protagonists in solving the case, and it’s moderately disappointing that it’s all over so soon… but then it makes me want to read the corresponding Lee Child book. Which proves it's a great tie-in I guess.
Disclosure: I won an ecopy somehow (can’t remember how) and enjoyed it.
This is the fifth of Diane Capri’s Jack books that I have read, in as many weeks. And it is a pretty good addition to the series. This one is more of a long short story or short novella than a novel. I read this one on my commute home one day. These stories are something you can really sink your teeth into, especially if you are a fan of the Jack Reacher books crime mystery thriller stories. I was hooked after reading the first story in this series and know I will be reading them all. At this point I am just about halfway through the ones currently available. I am trying to pace myself at about a book a week. I have already picked up the eBooks for all that are currently available. And plan on reviewing one a week until I have reviewed them all. In the six months before beginning to read this series I read 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child. And somehow, I stumbled upon these books while preparing one of my reviews, I did recall my dad having mentioned them. So, I decided to give one a try. And I am very thankful that I did. I typically read a couple hundred books a year, and the last few years have been over 300 a year. And at the pace I am going I will finish off this series un under a year from my first Reacher read. These stories are great reads for Reacher fans. But they are written well enough that they could be read on their own. So they are excellent reads for any fans of crime literature, mysteries, or thrillers. A warning though, they really ought to be read in order, something I must admit that is something that I often do not do, but in this case am sticking to the order. Lee Child himself has even plugged these books in the Reacher Report. And they deserve the applause.
In this part of the saga of FBI special agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar are hunting for Jack Reacher in Tampa Florida. They team up with Judge Willa Carson, investigative journalist Jessica Kimball, and attorney Jennifer Lane. But right from the get-go both are leery. The know that retired Army Colonel Thomas Weston is returning to MacDill Air Force Base for a public event. He has not been on American soil in sixteen years. They see him as an easy target for his enemies, and specifically Jack Reacher. The question is why is Weston setting himself up as bait. And is Reacher the only one with an ax to grind against this man.
This was a fun read. And I was informed this one those Capri’s Reacher series to her justice series. Which has just added a whole bunch of other books into my to be read pile. I am enjoying the Hunt For Reacher books almost as much as the original stories. They are great read and I highly recommend them.
Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Diane Capri.
Every single thing I am about to say about this book in the Hunt for Jack Reacher series can be written about every single book in the Hunt for Jack Reacher series. Because they are barely books. And they are identical in almost every conceivable way.
The plot is non-existent, pacing is ridiculously poor (stop talking about Otto’s fear of flying, stop talking about overwrought and useless exposition about nothing that actually advances the story or even seems remotely pertinent), and the author is drastically out of touch with reality or even a good sense of plausible suspension of disbelief. Often times the author gets stuck and so creates a monologue via drone: describing events that are not possible to be chained together because this author is a technophobe who doesn’t understand technology let alone surveillance capabilities. Characters are cardboard caricatures who are so flat as to be offensive to one-dimensional beings.
Do we really need to hear about “FBI Special Agent Kim Otto,” written in that formal sense, over and over again? No. The banter between Otto and Gaspar is ridiculously inept. NO ONE talks like that. Even the characters would get tired of it if not forced into this tripe by the author. Plot holes and drastic leaps of blind and stupid faith are required. Oh, minor pet peeve: there is no determination between chapters other than “well, looks like 2.5-5 pages! Time for a new chapter!” They literally happen mid-conversation. Why? No conceivably logical or useful reason.
And please stop saying “Otto looked at her Seiko.” Why name-drop that watch? Continually? And why is every upscale neighborhood (or even appearance in later books) ALWAYS referred to as “tony”? Dear author, expand your vocabulary and stop falling back on cheap gimmicks.
I enjoy the Jack Reacher series. I wonder what Lee Child was thinking when he agreed to this. This series, however, is a blight on the opus that is Jack Reacher. The only reason I keep reading it is because I want to see how it slides into the REAL Jack Reacher books, which is—I suspect—why other people also read this crap, painfully inflating sales and ratings beyond what this author should naturally receive.
So I’ll end with a couple of questions: * Who the hell edited these books? They should be fired. And banned from the industry. Twice. * What kind of blackmail material does this author have on Lee Child? This cannot stand. * I seriously question the publishing house that put this out. Unless they were simply cashing in on the Jack Reacher universe, which would make sense if they were. But this is like comparing one of the top films of all time to the lowest-rent public television broadcast done by two drunk friends who secretly hate each other but only do the public television to outdo the other one. And they’re both illiterate.
Jack in the Green by Diane Capri is a Jack Reacher story. It started with a strong hook about Jack being charged with a murder he didn't commit. I gave it four stars because it kept my interest & was a fast moving book.
Carlos Gaspar is working with Special Agent Kim Otto. His Boss paired them for some unknown reason. Their partnership was slowly improving. They were at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
"They’d been warned to watch out for Reacher, who came, destroyed and departed like a liger. Neither he nor Otto needed to be reminded to watch for him, but Gaspar wanted to believe it unlikely Reacher would try to get Weston today. Their feud was sixteen years old and surely even Reacher might have lost track of Weston in all that time.
'Weston has stayed out of Reacher’s way all this time,' Otto said. 'So why is Weston sticking his neck out by attending this particular memorial ceremony? He could have come any time. The base holds these generic memorials for military family members to pay their respects every year. Weston contacted them a month ago and said he wanted to attend this particular service. It doesn’t make any sense, does it?'
'Not to me,' Gaspar replied. 'So we do what we do.'
'Meaning what?'
'Meaning we stay alert. We’re missing something important...'"
Otto was tiny, but fierce. Gaspar liked that about her.
Upon meeting Weston for a few words before the ceremony, Gaspar ..."slouched a little & settled his hands into his trouser pockets because it made him seem friendlier. Gaspar knew many successful interrogation techniques, but none of them worked unless the subject wanted to talk. Most of the problem was making them want to. Once they wanted to tell him everything, witnesses were nearly impossible to shut up."
After observing Weston's behavior in attempting to intimidate Otto, he realized that he was a sociopath.
After a shooting..."Within minutes the entire base was locked down. The voice came on the speaker advising everyone to 'shelter in place.' Meaning hunker down until the situation was secured."
I received a complimentary copy of Jack in the Green from the author. This did not change my opinion for this review.
This complementary book was a free offer when singing up to Ms. Capri’s newsletter and was my introduction to the author as well as with the series. Although “Jack in the Green” may be the 5th novel in the series I stepped comfortable right into the drama and enjoyed this short story (90 pages) quite a bit. It was a good teaser to continued reading Ms. Capri’s imaginative creations.
Indeed we are talking about the famous Jack Reacher, the long-time protagonist of the best-selling author Lee Child but Ms. Capri spins a totally different web, of course it is around the famous character although in the drama he is only mentioned and never appears. The main players are FBI Agents Kim Otto& Carlos Gaspar and in “Jack in the Green” information of the whereabouts of Reacher leads them at a memorial service honoring dead and injured soldiers in Tampa, FLA. And then the action begins…….
Ok I will not go any further, we need to read this. It is a fun concept, lots of intrigue to keep us entertained although slightly predictable action. Let’s not forget a novella needs to say a lot in a few words and a thriller needs to keep us engaged, this book does both plus gives us an interesting plot that keeps going on and good characters to root for.
Good story, “This is the way I see it” my thoughts are mine and have not be influenced by the offer.
I read the first book because of Lee Child's recommendation. I thought there would be more about Reacher then occasional references to seeing him. I read 4 more books. Would have continued but to pay $7.99 per book when there are 14 altogether and I am not sure that will have a final ending instead of a continuing story with more to come. Continuous sequels for that price and books only about 200 pages are beyond what I am willing to spend. I checked libraries and book stores as they say there are paperback books out there but did not find any. Sometimes it just feels like a scam. I just finished the last Lee Child book and will wait for his next one.
Tampa, FL. MacDill AF Base. FBI SA Carlos Gaspar (retired US Army110th Special Investigations Unit) & FBI SA Kim Otto (Vietnamese/German, partner) were there to diffuse the situation. Strategic Operations Command Memorial Wall. Jack Reacher (retired US Army Major, sniper, WestPoint) was after Thomas Weston (husband, retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel). Tampa Southern Hospital. Trista Blanke (O.R. Patient Coordinator) had the update on the Weston’s. Thomas was shot in the back of his shoulder. Samantha Weston (wife) was wounded in the right thigh.
Steven Kent had his eyes on Jennifer Lane (Samantha’s lawyer).
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written thriller book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great thriller movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

So being a Reacher fan I was both a little dubious & curious about this Reacher "spin-off". It's apparently has Lee Child's approval so it should be okay - shouldn't it? It's a "between" book being 2.5 in the"Hunt for Reacher" series but also with characters from the "Hunt for Justice", another series unknown to me. So what did I make of it?
Well it's not a bad read & it's a quick one. For me the length was just right, I think my attention would have waned in a full length novel. Not unexpectedly, Reacher doesn't appear but the characters are okay, nice banter between them & the pace is fairly rapid but what I felt was missing was the reason as to why Otto & Gaspar were hunting him down. Maybe I should have started with book one ;o)
I did have one particular problem with the plot line...
So the burning question - will I read more? Hmmmm....if I come across one I'll more than likely pick it up but I won't be hunting further instalments down.
This is one of those free books that you get by joining an author's mailing list with the intent being that you read it, enjoy it and want to carry on with the series or other books by the author.
I read this book, not being a super fan of Jack Reacher (because he is depicted as a superman, who is able to do it all), and this book didn't fail to add to the mythos of Reacher (who in addition to being a badass MP officer, is now sniper qualified).
That being said, the book actually only name drops Reacher and actually tries to build other characters, who are investigating Reacher as a suspect in the death of a former officer from Iraq that Reacher had some investigatorial interactions with. The book itself does leave a major cliffhanger (to entice the reader to read the next in the series). As such, I give this book/novella a strong three stars out of five.
As with all reviews, this is just my five cents worth.
A short publication for readers with little time or in hunt for a quick murder buzz. The problem with short books is getting a real understanding of the characters but this one wasn't bad to do. Was Reacher really involved apart from the obvious input at the end? Some might think that the author was using his name to sell the book but as she knows the author I will let this suspicion slide. The complexity of the US law enforcement agencies almost seems alien to UK citizens like me. They seem to be more concerned with turf battles, point scoring and being the winner than finding a killer. Then again, it may just seem that way to me.
I enjoyed the book but probably a longer novel would have given me more to get my teeth into characters and make a better assessment of a published work.
Jack in the Green (Hunt for Reacher #2.5), my seventeenth read from author Diane Capri. Owning 50 of her books I'm somewhat surprised that FBI agents Otto and Gaspar have formed an opinion of Jack Reacher that is at odds with that of most of Lee Child's longtime readers. Otto and Gaspar are having their opinions continually changed as they discover the true character of Lee Child's best-known character. After reading Get Back Jack (Hunt For Jack Reacher #2) with Kelley Hazen's bland narration I enjoyed Corey M. Snow's factual narration which fit the tone of the book well.. I'm voluntarily reading & reviewing it because every great book needs reviews. I'll definitely be reading more from this author and in the Hunt for Reacher Series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Gaspar and Otto, FBI agents, are sent to Tampa hunting for Jack Reacher. They are to interview a former officer Thomas Weston about the murders of his first wife and three children and Reacher's investigation of it. Hoping to get a lead on Reacher, they instead become involved in murder.
I have to admit I have not yet read the Jack Reacher series but it is on my TBR pile. I have not read the first books in this series but I was able to follow along very easily. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read. I liked Gaspar and Otto. I liked how they were able to get some people to talk. I also liked the history of Reacher being told through others' eyes. I look forward to reading both series.
I just finished Jack in the Green and found this book quite enjoyable. This is the 4th book that I have read in this series. I have read in excess of 20 of the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child and as they are described in this series, you can picture him from his actions as written by Lee Child. Again, I really like the writing in this series as well as Jess Kimball, Willa Carson series that she authored.
A relatively short tale, continuing the exploits of agents Otto and Gaspar in thier hunt for Jack Reacher. This is notable for an appearance of Judge Willa Carson, another of Capri's literary characters. Its also partially set in Tampa, FL, Carson's stomping ground. I've only read one of the Carson books, but finding her here was a treat. An enjoyable book and its encourages me to read more in both series.
Just finished Jack in the Green and sorry it's ended so soon. I'm in love with Lee Child/Jack Reacher......well, the books, actually and can't get enough. Diane Capri has done justice to the legend with her "seeking Reacher" novels. Her characters are sharp, witty and intense all at the same time. If you haven't read Diane's series and are a fan of Lee Child, what are you waiting for? I'm anxiously awaiting the next!
I am really starting to enjoy the adventures of Otto and Gaspar. These unlikely partners are developing a strong rapport and as they try to learn more about Jack Reacher, we also learn more about them. This one has them looking into a case from Reacher's time as an MP. Do we see Reacher lurking in the shadows as Otto and Gaspar interview those who had crossed his path? Or, is Otto just seeing a tiger in the trees?
Not sure how Diane does it but she writes exactly like Lee Child. I have read 4 of her books and just started on the 5th. Now reading the short stories in Justice is Served - Federal Judge Willa Carson is like Jessica Fletcher; murder seems to follow her wherever she goes. I read 100+ books a year and she is in my top 10 authors.
Otto and Carlos Gaspar track Reacher's past in Tampa where they team up with Judge Willa Carson, journalist Jessica Kimball, and attorney Jennifer Lane. When Retired Colonel Weston returns to MacDill AFBfor a public event after sixteen years, he's an easy target ultimately killing witnesses in the hospital
Recently learned of Diane Capri's "other" Reacher series. Randomly read #3 (novella) and liked it. Gifted this novella and am: More interested but not quite hooked. Reacher is awesome but him not being present (in these two novellas) lessens the impact. I'll try a full-length to decide if I continue with these or just wait for the next "real" Reacher.
FBI agents Otto and Gaspar are looking for Jack Reacher. Surprisingly, Jack Reacher is the main character in another series by a different author. It’s a trip to see how he is woven into this scenario, based on following the people Reacher has touched and trying to solve murders. Anxious to see how this crossover advances!!
FBI agents Otto and Gaspar are hunting for Jack Reacher in Tampa Florida, where an old enemy of Reacher will make a speech. Other FBI agents are on hand to arrest the enemy for various crimes. The enemy, by the name of Westin is shot, as is Mrs Westin, and they are both later killed in the hospital.
I wanted to like this book. I do like the idea of the Reacher companion series...even without Jack. Maybe I don't remember enough of the original Reacher story, but this one was just hard to follow. I will read the rest.
Another Hunt for Reacher novel. This novel takes the FBI team to Florida to ask questions to a former Army Officer Jack investigated while in uniform. When the man and his wife get shot the FBI needs to determine why and how Jack is involved. Will they finally meet Mr. Reacher?
This is a very reluctant 2 star. It is pure fan fiction and nothing to do with Jack Reacher....it could just have been John Smith, how she was allowed to write about and jump on the Reacher series I do not know. I enjoy her other books but the Reacher series is a con
