Shackleton’s School for Seekers is a haven for students as diverse as the magical gifts they possess. But as the new class of Seekers soon learn, the ability to hear voices from the past or sense an object’s history can lead to great knowledge...and even greater danger.

When Fern, Jordan, and Zack are selected for a mysterious class trip with Shackleton’s fearless Dr. Adichie, they’ve only just begun to explore the limits of their powers. It’s clear their teacher knows more than she’s letting on about the kids’ gifts—and the dangers they’ll be facing. But when an unexpected accident separates the trio from their instructor and leaves them stranded on an uncharted island, they’ll have to learn to rely on each other to survive the hostile environment and the Seekers’ equally hostile rivals, the Keepers.

This gorgeously illustrated graphic novel is now in print for the first time after its successful debut on the Epic! platform.

Seeker Society shifts between past events in each of the student's life, at school or to their present predicament of being thrown overboard. The trio soon find themselves on an island where they encounter the Keepers, a group of people who have been at odds with the Seekers and want to take advantage of the student's gifts and the map that they've discovered on the island. Roy, a former teacher with Dr. Adichie and his daughter Shay lead the Keepers, and they're consumed with deciphering the map to find the treasure of the Lost Island. Shay has the power of navigation and soon revolts against her father in order to help Fern, Zack and Jordan. She disagrees with her father on selling the treasure and doesn't believe that everything should be for sale. The children soon begin canvasing the island to try and find the treasure before the Keepers, while trying to evade Roy and his team.

The Seeker Society is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel, and I loved the way the illustrator and colorist play with color on their full-page illustrations. How each illustration is a glimpse of what's to come. Where one page is for example colored blue and the illustrations almost appear black and white, and then the next page shows the same illustrations but in full color. With all the different colors on the page you start to pick up on things that maybe didn't catch your eye on the blue colored page. I found this quite interesting. I also really enjoyed that the story emphasizes friendship, trust and teamwork. How each student had an opportunity to use their skills and that their skills were evolving to include new ways that they could be used. How Jordan learned that he doesn't always pay attention and that he needs to work on thinking before acting. I also especially liked the school's motto and how each of the student's gifts were powers that help them to locate historical artifacts. There's a really nice reveal at the end of the book, that I don't want to spoil, but I'm fond with the idea that it's tied to the heart of the island. Seeker Society has received 3 million + reads on the Epic! platform and I'm glad that it is being published in a graphic novel format. I can see this appealing to 8–10-year-olds who enjoy magical schools and the idea of outsmarting adults.

The ability to connect with the past leads to adventure and danger pure.

The School for Seekers is packed with students, who harbor various gifts...many which lean to peering one way or another into history, gifts in language, and more. While these might, at first, seem calm, these talents are more powerful than they appear. When a group of Seeker students accidentally lands on an island, the adventure is about to begin, but they might not survive it thanks to the deadly creatures residing there.

The illustrations are rich and allow the fantasy world to open up and invite in. The scenes are vivid, and the creatures radiate danger. Each moment hits with emotional clarity and makes this group easy to root for from beginning to end.

The tale is complexly woven and allows the information to dribble between the action, keeping tension high with just enough background knowledge to make things understandable. It flips between present, past, and somewhere in between constantly. Each time, this is marked with a short time note in a rectangle at the top of the page. This helps keep the flashbacks clear. While the constant back and forth allows for information to be dropped at just the right time (avoiding info dumps), it does break the story flow and pulled out of the main plot quite often. It almost grew confusing a few times as the sudden change needed to be recognized and worked in with the main plot every time to understand what was happening. While not my favorite tactic, it keeps the story compact and quick paced.

There's a large amount of diversity on the character end to make sure many aspects are included. This builds nicely into the teamwork as each student needs to learn to handle their own powers while discovering how to work with the capabilities of those around them. That also slides nicely into the mystery and makes it exciting as each clue discovered depends on this vibrant mix.

It's an interesting beginning to a series and lays the foundation for many adventures to come. Fans of quick-paced adventure with super-powers and teamwork involved as well as inner struggles are going to enjoy this one.

A new series of unique kids all with special gifts. Three new students join the school of The Seeker Society, each having a special ability, one can understand any language, one can see the past, and one can hear the past. Together they tumble through the ocean and end up on a strange island. Using their abilities they trek deeper into the island where they encounter "The Keepers," the bad guys who have been fighting/challenging the Seekers for millennia.

There's some positive points of changing who you are, accepting others, and working together, but it wasn't very exciting and the explanation of the island was confusing. The backstory of the kids was good, but there's not really a reason for it because it's so randomly placed in the story.

It's the first in a series, so it'll hopefully expand after this. The artwork was fun and very colorful, and the cast is very diverse.

Graphic Novel
I received an electronic ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing through Edelweiss+.
First in a new series. Three children are chosen for an adventure after they arrive at a mysterious school. Each student there has a power of some sort and the staff helps them cultivate it. After another ship rams theirs, the three fall overboard and land on a deserted island. Their adventures help them bond as they try to find fresh water and a place of safety. Unfortunately, another group is also on the island seeking the "treasure." Readers see the good and the bad groups though I appreciate the hints that the viewpoints are not so clearcut. The artwork is highly detailed and enhances the story. Looking forward to seeing where the adventures head next.

A new fast-paced graphic novel full of teamwork, acceptance, and friendship.

Shackleton’s School for Seekers is a place for students with magical gifts. New recruits Fern, Jordan and Zack are settling in and learning about their powers when their teacher, Dr. Adichie, selects them for a mysterious trip. When the ship they’re on is attacked, the three end up on a mysterious island…and they’re not alone.

Flipping between the past and present and set in a fantasy world full of rich, vivid illustrations, readers will fly through the pages to see what next adventure awaits the Seekers.

I really enjoy this book in which there are young explorers learning how to navigate as well as understand their powers better.

I also like the concept of these special people coming from an ancient civilization that has long been lost and their journey to learning about where their ancestors came from!

The artwork was very well done and went great with the story!

Trigger warnings: adoption, adoptive parent getting sick, some violence, injury, kidnapping

Great adventure, had me rapidly turning pages. Only downside is it ends sort of abruptly, but at least not a cliffhanger. It's the first in a series and I'm definitely intrigued enough to keep reading.

Fun fast-paced kid friendly adventure. I smell some good character development for these kids and it seems like they all have great backstories. Ending is quick- so hoping for a sequel!
