Carlianne Tipsey is an award-winning children’s book illustrator and mentor.
She began her career working in games for Disney Interactive where she got to draw princesses all day. She later worked as a Senior Illustrator for a kid’s creativity company.
For the last ten years she has helped mentor her colleagues in illustration, and has taught children complex STEM concepts with cute and simple illustrations. She is perhaps most well known on Instagram and YouTube where she teaches simple cute art tips to help anyone learn how to draw.
In her free time (what’s that?) she enjoys wrangling her two beautiful children and reading them books she has illustrated. When the lights go out, she’s back to work creating tutorials to inspire other artists to create their own cute stuff. Because the only thing better than cute art, is LOTS of cute art.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
How to Draw Adorable is a guide book with step by step instructions on how to make your illustrations and drawings adorable. This was such a fun book with lots of helpful and useful advice and information as well as lots of practice pages all the way through each section. So many of the illustrations are so cute and I wish I had the physical copy so I could try my hand at them as it's not so easy to do with an e-ARC . This book would be super useful and fun for anyone looking to cutify their drawings and artwork.
This is a very helpful book that goes into all the steps to make your drawings look cuter. For instance, lower the features and make the eyes bigger or the head bigger in proportion to the body, to make the character look younger. Tipsey has you try your hand at her advice many times in the book. Her style isn't really mine and it would have been nice to see other styles of adorable, but this is a very helpful, fun book.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

If you’re looking for some drawing tips, especially on drawing cute things, then this is the book for you! Inside, there’s a whole bunch of tips from drawing facial expressions to changing the shapes. There’s even tips on how to make your drawings look younger or older all based on where you draw the face. The opening of the book talks about what it is to draw cute, which is really a matter of perspective. I love that it encourages readers to find their own version of cute because it’s different for everyone. Do you think it’s cute? Then it’s cute!
There’s so many great drawing tips that I think this is a great book for most people, including those new to drawing. Not only is it a great guide, but also a wonderful workbook whether or not you’re new to drawing. There’s all kinds of info ranging from face shapes to the nice and large range of facial expressions one can draw. I think this will make a great gift to any growing artist because it’s also very encouraging to those using the workbook. We’re our own worst critic, and this workbook is very sweet and encouraging from beginning to end. No one has room to beat themselves up here!
Oh my goodness, this book was so fun and a really great learning tool. I love drawing but I am not great at it so I am always trying to learn how to draw better. How to Draw Adorable by Carlianne Tipsy is a wonderful drawing book! This book was just so helpful and easy to read. I really like the progression of the steps and how it stops to let you try out what you learn. The book starts with explaining what makes a picture adorable or cute and then it builds from there. I really like how it explains the reasoning behind the concept and how it gives you opportunities to practice. For example, it shows how where the eyes are on a face can affect how cute the drawing looks. It then explains why this works and then it gives you the opportunity to try it out yourself. This book starts at shapes and then it builds up to actually drawing figures and different poses. There are so many great sections like how to draw expressions, cute animals, and even how to develop your own cute style. I really enjoyed this book and the way it was formatted. It is a wonderful book for beginners. I think that it may be a little too easy for more advanced drawers and artists, but I do believe that it would still be a fun book to try out. I would definitely recommend How to Draw Adorable, especially to those who are just starting to draw. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.
Thank you so much to the author, Girl Friday Productions, and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC! This review contains my honest and unbiased thoughts and opinions. 🌸
I absolutely love this book!
I love to draw, paint, all things crafty but I do struggle when it comes to drawing actual objects. As I work on my designs and graphics, I've started looking for tutorials and books to help me improve. Since my daughter and I both love all things adorable and it being part of my drawing style, I was excited when I came across this book.
I think I only got a few pages in before I was totally inspired to draw something and had to grab my tablet. I immediately tried out what the author shared and suggested and have continued referring to the book.
The author keeps things fun and super easy to follow and try. She includes a wide variety of options of what to try, she includes so many examples and the instructions are the best. I have never found a drawing book I enjoyed and got this much out of.
I'm not all that great with it being on Kindle so this is one I absolutely will be purchasing to have on hand to continue using to learn and grow.

Impressions: I loved this book! My 11 year old son and I worked through the pages and we learned more then how to create adorable drawings. We learned proportions, how to manipulate our pencils to create different effects, and how to create feeling and expression in our art. This book was far more then we bargained for.
I received an ARC of this book via the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here. For more book reviews go to: https://simplyannehere.wordpress.com
Thanks to Netgalley and Girl Friday Productions for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review. The book came out on September 6th of 2022.
Surprisingly for an artist this is my first time reviewing an art related book. But honestly, I love all the books with tips that teach you how to draw cute stuff. I own few of them and they are an absolute life saver for someone like me who has to make “cutsey” art every now and then but their usual art style couldn’t be more off. So you bet I studied this one like I’ll have an exam on it.
How to Draw Adorable is a workbook I would honestly recommend to everyone interested in drawing no matter the age. Because hey I’m 26 and I found it useful. I love the tips and examples. A+ for including advice on different facial expressions, poses, colours and shapes. Also this workbook covers wide range of things you can draw such as people, animals, plants, objects as well as giving you space for exercise. Loved it!
How to Draw Adorable is a wonderful all-ages drawing guide with tutorials by Carlianne Tipsey. Due out 6th Sept 2022, it's 160 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is such a cute, accessible, and well formatted book. The subjects are wide ranging and anthropomorphic and character based. The instruction is for line drawn sketching and the subjects are all age appropriate and appealing. Scattered throughout are pages with drawing and thinking prompts for art such as: visual clues that make you happy, are pleasant to look at, and inspire feelings of love, or full page practice exercises such as drawing circles or lines, or bisecting squares and other shapes. All of the practice pages include short tutorials on how to use the spaces to best advantage.
There are also instruction pages which clearly show proportions and drawing guides for faces, figures, and detailing drawings. The language is very modern and youthful (the book is full of phrases like "all the feels" and "get your cute on").
There are tips and tricks for improving technique in highlighted color text boxes throughout the text. The emphasis is on short, digestible, understandable lessons in clear colorful text and illustrations. The practice pages are printed on dotted page layouts which will make a good tie-in for instructors who wish to encourage journaling and drawing practice for their students. This is a very simple and beginner accessible book.
Five stars. This would be a good selection for public or school library acquisition and home study. It would be a superlative gift, excellent classroom or library group selection for activity groups, a wonderful parent/caregiver activity, or even for babysitters and child-minders looking to up their activity time with their small charges. Artistic exploration allows children to improve fine motor skills and gives them a feeling of accomplishment and control.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
As an elementary school art teacher I have to admit that I am obsessed with this book. Carlianne Tipsey's drawings are an absolute delight and the format of this book is just perfect for the young artist! Peppered with space to practice, adorable examples and visuals, it's chock-full of wonderful ways to draw just about anything and make it cute. This cheerful book combines simple and easy to read directions with wonderful illustrations that make it both fun to read and inspiring to draw from. It covers everything from facial proportions to figure drawing and even covers the elements of design, all in the most playful of ways! The message in the book is to take your time, practice, and have fun - what a wonderful way to approach life in general! I can't wait to share this delightfully fun book with my own students.
How to Draw Adorable is a delightful book that is sure to make you smile. In fact, the subtitle of the book is “Joyful Lessons for Making Cute Art”. In addition to the book’s cover, the first page of the book is absolutely adorable - a drawing of the author Carli with a big smile and looking cute! Tipsey says she loves drawing cute art because it makes her smile as well as others. What better reason is there to draw cute!
In addition to drawing cuteness and explaining the nuts and bolts of how to do it, Tipsey discusses a key overall point - what is cuteness and what does the word actually mean. She identifies the elements that go into making a drawing adorable and shows the transformation of an original drawing into a cute one. She shows different facial expressions and poses that are key to a cute drawing. Not only does she go step-by-step through different elements and categories but there are also tips offered throughout the book. The overall categories are people, animals and inanimate objects.
How to Draw Adorable is a unique reference that belongs in anybody’s library that wants to learn to draw and draw cute. It’s great for beginners, whether young or old.
Thank you to Girl Friday Productions - Girl Friday Books and NetGalley for a temporary advance reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC! I love to doodle and I was so excited to find this book about learning to draw adorable things by @carliannecreates 😊 This was such a fun book to read and I learned lots. I enjoyed copying some doodles from her book and trying to create my own. This book teaches you some drawing basics and has templates for different facial features which I thought was super helpful. There are also practice pages where you can draw what you learned from each chapter. I'd definitely recommend this if you're interested in learning to draw cute things!
Thank you NetGalley and Girl Friday Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This how-to drawing book was a good introduction to drawing "cute" and "adorable" pictures. As someone whose drawing skills do not extend beyond stick figures, this book had a lot of good hints and tutorials that even a hopeless artist like myself was able to follow with success.
But this book also has a lot of good tips for more experienced artists who perhaps want to hone their craft, especially if they usually lean more realistic. A lot of cool tips that will definitely help any level of artist.
How to Draw Adorable is a hidden gem of a book. It is so much more than just drawing cute stuff. If you're interested in illustrating for example children's and kids books, this would be a great reference book. The amount of facial references, emotions and tips is amazing and the author knows her craft well.
I can highly recommend this to intermediate creatives and artists that are looking to give their illustrations and drawings more story and emotion as well as anybody who's looking to illustrate a book or a text.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for giving me this eARC to review.
This is probably one of the best art books I have read. The book gives examples of what is classed as cute, there were pages where one could write what makes them happy or unhappy for visual cues, and there were pages to practice patterns. This book was easy to follow and I recommend it to anyone liking or even just interested in this style.
An adorable guide that directs with simplicity and teaches how to make everything super duper cute. A great book for doodlers, teens, and novice artists. Great for comic artists and book illustrators. Includes practice pages to perfect the cuteness of any item, animal, and expression.
Cute drawings have often made me smile and I have often thought of drawing cute things myself. This book provides great tips and techniques on how to do just that! I love the side by side comparisons of how just a change of an eye here or an ear there could make all the difference in the world of cute. I can't wait to try out some of the tricks.
There are also lots of blank templates for you to draw right on the book if you wish.
I noticed that most of the examples here are of human figures, though there are a few animals and still life. But I think the principle applies whatever you draw.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher Girl Friday Books for sending me a copy of this cute little book!
Such a cute and useful book for little drawings, I can't wait to put all I've learned into practice. I've been trying to learn how to do illustrations for a few months now and I think this will be super helpful.
The explanations are simple, concise, and with many examples to illustrate it. I thoroughly recommend it if you want to start illustrating or want to get better at it, but definitely a book for beginners! This would be a great gift for children but I think some adults/teenagers could like it and get use out of it too!!
I received an ARC of this ebook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The illustrations in this book are so cute! I don't consider myself an artist but this book really helped me draw a little better. I recommend this book for those that are just starting to learn to draw the basics.
It’s absolutely cuuuute!! I still need to practice A LOT, but I can see some progress already. It’s funny how I noticed that since I read this book I’ve been wanting to draw more often. Thank you for showing us how tiny details can make such a huge difference.
* I received an ARC from Girl Friday Productions in exchange for an honest review.
How to Draw Adorable, was quite simply - adorable! It is a guide to creating 'cute' illustrations for beginners to those with more advanced skills. Each section is broken down into smaller chunks so that you don't feel like you are learning too many steps at a time. It also has space to be used as an actual workbook so you can complete your exercises in the book itself. The guide moves through basic design principals through to exploring the use of shapes and colour to create varied expressions and different characters. The illustrations throughout are a delight. I am not an artist by any means and I found the descriptions and tutorials for each section to be clear and accessible. I found myself following along and attempting some excercises on my ipad and I was pleased to see that I was actually making progress as I went on! The style and format would appeal particularly to a teen audience.
Doodling or drawing people is a real struggle for me but I still love to do it. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous about this book as I am no artist. However Carlianne’s art style is just to cute and too sweet not to try. Right from the introduction I was hooked. The writing is warm and kind, reminding me to have fun often. The “journaling aspect to discover what you want to draw and what cute meant to me was excellent as I often struggle with what exactly it is I want to draw. This book was a real joy to read and learn from start to finish.
Do you want to make cute art? Award-winning children’s book illustrator and artist Carlianne Tipsey is the creator of "How to Draw Adorable. Joyful Lessons for Making Cute Art", published by Girl Friday Productions (Girl Friday Books). Tipsey states as goal of the book: "In this book, I don’t want to teach you only one way to create cute art. I want you to understand what makes something cute, so that you can apply that understanding to your own style. But you won’t just learn all of my cute secrets, you’ll also find step-by-step tutorials, reference sheets, and plenty of space to practice. By the time you reach the end of this book, you’ll be making so much cute art that you’ll run out of fridge space to show it off!" (p. 10). After the introduction Tipsey touches topics such as "the meaning of cuteness", "secrets of cuteness", "expressions", or "cute anythings" in ten chapters in the book. The drawings are cute and attractive. There are "Did you know?" info and "Tips" throughout the book and practice space to apply what was learned in the chapter. I found the portions of the body design and the reference list for cuties very valuable. I recommend the book for beginner and advanced artists who want to learn how to draw cute designs or learn how to improve them. The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #HowToDrawAdorable #HTDA #Netgalley
Thank you to Girl Friday Productions, Girl Friday Books and NetGalley for an electronic ARC of this book.
How to Draw Adorable by Carlianne Tipsey is a fun and informative book on how to draw "Cute". The pictures are as promised, but the best part of this book is that she explains what makes something adorable, going into proportions, shapes, colors, objects and spacing, as well as other elements which all contribute to the cuteness of a drawing.
Not coming from an art background, this book was very helpful to explain in a simple but interesting way what elements you need to incorporate to make a drawing cute. I would recommend that people buy the physical copy of the book as there are exercises to try (tracing shapes, coloring in objects to find a good color contrast, etc) that you can't do with an ebook unless you take a screen shot and print out a copy of those specific pages to use. There are quite a few practice time pages spread throughout the book so you can draw on your own to learn the concepts she is teaching you.
Hopefully I'll be able to practice and learn to draw!
In this creative workbook you learn to how to make anything and everything cute and adorable. HOW TO DRAW ADORABLE by Carlianne Tipsey is full of fun lessons on how to draw irresistible faces and animals and how to create charismatic characters. This book includes visual tips, step by step examples, and design theories that’s good for beginners through advanced artists alike. It also includes several guided worksheets to help you make the most adorable characters.
I tried several of the characters in this book and used the tips and hints to make them adorable and it’s amazing what a difference a little tweak will do. I’ll definitely refer back to this book often to make more adorable characters.
Thanks NetGalley and Girl Friday Productions for the gift of this book in exchange for my honest review. 5 stars!
Could there be anything more adorable? Well, I don't think so, it was too sweet to read this book!
Every lesson that the book gave me, how to draw in a cute way, gave my heart a joy, what beautiful things are in this book!
It is also a super complete guide, if you want to learn to draw in this way, it gives you the guides, the colors, the shapes, so that your creations inspire tenderness and joy.
highly recommended.

Such a fun, light and super easy to follow guide to learn how to draw- and to find your own style. I loved that there weren't any strict guidelines and everything is meant to give you ideas, tips and tricks on creating what YOU think is cute and what our eyes generally gravitate towards that is appealing. Lots of practice spaces, tracing, guides on many ways to achieve whatever look you're going for.
My only complaint is that I ALMOST stopped reading in the beginning because it was too heavily centered on babies - I could turn it into a drinking game and be intoxicated before I was even halfway through. I would've loved a smaller focus on human babies specifically because I feel it will limit your target audience- BUT, the rest of the book was less baby-centered and I'm glad I stuck with it!
This is a fantastic book to learn to draw cute art! A lot of chapters focus on human drawing, expressions and emotions and the later chapters apply these concepts to animals and things. I liked this approach and also appreciated the depth in which the author described art, going from rough sketches to cleaner final versions. There are lots of examples and concepts to learn and the art in the book makes it a fun learning journey.
I received a digital review copy of the book through NetGalley for an honest review. While it was great to read the content, the workbook style of the book wasn’t possible to leverage in the digital format. I would recommend getting this as a hardcopy book so that you can draw in the book and follow along the practice sheets.
