I do enjoy a good poetry collection, and this one took the reader on a journey of feeling deeply, experiencing anxiety and insecurity, and discovering self-love.

I think a good amount of the poems had too much rhyme for me, or they felt too “loose” and less structured, which made it feel a bit immature for my taste. But, that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t resonate better with someone else! Overall, these poems were heartfelt and meaningful, which matters more than my preference.

This book got me feeling all sorts of things! I am happily married but it brought me back to a time in my life when I wasn’t and put words to experiences and emotions I’ve had and never named. So many poems made me teary, and nearly every poem I could think of someone that would relate to it and enjoy it. I sent multiple poems to friends as I read it. I really loved it.

The growth in these poems is wonderful. It is beyond healing to read poems you know would have resonated with a part of you a decade ago that wasn’t healed yet and then to read another poem later in the book that shows how much you’ve healed/grown. Absolutely beautiful.

I freaking adored this book!! I read it while I was on my breaks at work and I finished it in two shifts. It was so good. Some parts I almost cried at and others I laughed at. As always, here are some of my favorite quotes.

"I am fragile, but somehow it is hard to break me. Your words cut deep. But I won't let you see me bleed. I'll put on a straight face and pretend to be all right. When I am alone, the dam I have build all day will break. I was told my fragility is only for me to see. Now everyone else thinks I am stone cold and mean."

"I am the sponge absorbing everyone's pain and worries. The person they find comfort in. To let them know they aren't alone. But when they have gotten what they want, they ring me out and leave me to dry. And I am constantly giving so much while I am being drained of life."

"I wake up for the first time in days with that come-back-to-life feeling you get when the fog clears and you can think again. — Because I feel cheerful again. A feeling that was dormant now active. Happy-go-lucky go me is back. And no one knows the dark days I face because I am good at hiding away. Only to emerge when I can put a smile on my face."

I met Jennae Cecelia earlier this month when she hosted poet Maria Giesbrecht in conversation at Magers & Quinn bookstore in Minneapolis. I appreciated the depth of her questions for Maria and her joy and vulnerability.

This book of poems is an accessible read for people who are treading into poetry for the first time. Every poem is relatable and vulnerable. Many poems in this collection describe what it’s like to live with anxiety, what it’s like to be with a lover or friends who don’t love or see you, and overcoming past struggles and learning to love yourself. This is a collection I’ll pick up again and again when I’m looking for a poem to match a specific mood.

The only thing I didn’t like about this collection is that the poems didn’t have titles. I think it would have made it easier for me to find my favorite poems in the book.

Overall, this is a relatable, readable and honest collection of work about self-love, especially in the midst of difficult life circumstances. It will get you in your feels.

I have read every single one of Jennae Cecilia’s books, and Deep in My Feels is by far her best work. From start to finish, almost every poem resonated with me in a way that her earlier collections never fully reached. She captures the entire range of emotions that come with being human: loneliness, heartbreak, healing, and ultimately finding yourself again.

What I love most about this collection is how natural it feels to move from one poem to the next. Each piece holds weight on its own, yet together they create a journey that feels complete and meaningful. I truly believe this book is the most honest and powerful writing she has ever shared.

For me this was an easy five star read. It is a book I will return to again whenever I need words that remind me I am not alone in what I am feeling.

A reflective body of short poems focusing on various aspects of life. A handful of poems really gripped me on my first read but I think I will dip into this book in various different moods and discover other poems. I appreciated the vulnerability and femininity of these poems.

My favourite poem for my current mood and initial read:
‘it is raining again in my head,
yet for everyone else it is sunny.
why is the bad weather affecting only me?
they are all out
playing,
dancing.
here i am
sad,
alone.
the waters have come and washed me out.
but sadness floods every part of me.
and everyone else seems so happy.’

I just finished DIMF, and no surprise, it’s beautifully written and will hit your emotions in varying ways (or transport you back in time to a place where you experienced some of these feelings.)

If you remember the “I Met My Younger Self For Coffee” trend from earlier this year…Jennae’s original poem that inspired the movement is in this book. ☕️

Congratulations to this lovely and talented human!

its a beautifully sincere compilation of poetic musings that uncover the depths of love, grief, and development. Jennae Cecelia’s expressions resonate with such openness that it seemed she was addressing my heart personally. Every poem existed independently, but collectively, they created a stunning narrative of emotional freedom and recovery. This is a book I’ll revisit—particularly when I require a soft reminder that it's acceptable to experience strong emotions

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I had read one passage previously so I was curious. I'm really glad I did. It was very thought-provoking and I had a good cry at the end. Every young, middle aged and older woman needs to read this. And men, too.

Where was this 10 years ago?! Ugly cried as I related to the poems and the pain and the trauma! But then tears of happiness as I related to the joy, relief and hope of starting a new and getting to a better place ❤️

LOVED this collection! Must read!

Unfortunately this was just okay for me. But I think it’s because of my age and where I’m at in life, not so much that author or poetry. It just felt very young, high school heartbreak to me. Couldn’t resonate with the poems really. But still some good ones!

This book felt, to me, like it was meant more for a younger audience. I’m 31 and this book just didn’t resonate with me personally.

I would have liked this and related to it much more if I read it 15 years ago.
