A visual celebration of one of the most dynamic and imaginative comics since Calvin and Hobbes, this deluxe hardcover treasury celebrates includes every Wallace the Brave Sunday comic strip from 2018-2024, featuring original watercolors, character art, maps, and an introduction by the author.
This book celebrates the artistic achievement of Will Henry and presents the Wallace the Brave universe in vivid color, the first ever book edition that presents his Sunday comics in their original, large format. Henry's illustration and storytelling in the daily Wallace the Brave comic strip and books have earned multiple Eisner Award nominations and Reuben awards for the Best Newspaper Comic Strip and Cartoonist of the Year. As NPR's Glen Weldon writes, "The world of childhood depicted in the strip is a timeless, outdoorsy one reminiscent of strips like Calvin & Hobbes and Cul De Sac, both of which Henry cites as influences."
First of all, Wallace the Brave is one of the best comic strips to come out in decades. So are Crabgrass and Phoebe and Her Unicorn, so if you're not reading these strips, you're missing out.
Secondly, Will Henry is an amazing illustrator who adds a lot of whimsical details to his strips, especially the Sunday strips. They're bigger than you'll see on your computer screen (does anyone actually read strips in papers anymore?), so you get to examine them to your heart's content. Folks who liked hunting for Richard Scarry's Goldbug will appreciate this detail.
So, what I'm saying is YOU NEED THIS BOOK. Go get it.
I really can’t express how much of a cartoon joy this was from start to finish. Wallace the Brave’s Sunday comics collection absolutely pops with gorgeous colors and insanely expressive line work, with some of the best character design I have ever seen in a comic.
I know Wallace gets compared to Calvin and Hobbes, but I really feel this comic stands completely on its own. What a treasure!
I fancied very much the characters: not just Wallace and his friends, I now declare myself a huge fan of all his family. (Sterling 🙌)
Yes, it remind me of my so-adored Calvin & Hobbes. Yes, the illustrations are drawn with lots of beautiful details for you to discover. And yes, I'd love to have a little house by the sea in Snug Harbor.
A collection of all the Sunday comics from the Wallace the Brave comic strip from 2018 to Dec, 2024 featuring the antics of Wallace, his best bud Spud, friends Rose and Amelia, fisherman father, comic-loving/adventure junky mother, and little brother Sterling.
This had me smiling and chuckling throughout with a couple laughs that couldn’t be held in. Wallace is a nicer, more adventurous Calvin. Cool and calm, homebody Spud is the perfect foil for Wallace’s high octane adventures. Amelia is there to provide snarky commentary. Rose provides the actual science when they need it. Wallace’s parents are the epitome of cool. They know when to lay down the law, when to party hearty, and when to roll with the insanity. I love the running gag of Dad’s stories of how they found Sterling (who is absolutely insane and is constantly doing the most crazy things, like shredding his clothes in the coffee grinder at the grocery store). I also appreciate their school teacher, and the way she handles Wallace and Spud’s antics.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: No sexual content. Sterling is always shedding his clothes and there are butt shots of him on 3 pages, while other pages strategically cover things. There are also some illustrations of Wallace, Spud, and Sterling in just undies. Violence: Just in their imagination or by accident attempting ill-advised stunts. (Like riding a wagon down a hill.) Ethnic diversity: Wallace (and Wallace’s family), Spud, and Amelia are all white American. Rose, and their long-suffering school teacher are Black American. Some other background characters have other skin tones. LGBTQ+ content: None specified. Other: Some hair-brained schemes, some theories about mysterious neighbors that aren’t always kind (but when they aren’t, the neighbor always has a quick comeback that shuts down that theory and makes the kids say sorry).
Will Henry’s Sunday Funday Wallace is an absolute treasure trove for anyone who loves the whimsical, wild world of Wallace the Brave. This collection gathers the full-color Sunday comics, giving each adventure a little more room to breathe and shine. If you’re already a fan, this book is a must-have. If you’re new to the town of Snug Harbor, prepare to fall in love.
What makes this comic strip so special is its cast of characters, who are all bursting with personality. Wallace himself is a whirlwind of curiosity and imagination, approaching every situation with a boundless optimism that’s both inspiring and hilarious. Whether he’s hunting for Sasquatches or showing his love for a chirping cricket in the most unexpected way possible, his adventures perfectly capture the delightful absurdity of childhood. The supporting cast, from his pragmatic dad to the ever-exasperated Spud, adds layers of humor and heart to every page. Of course, Amelia the trickster, Rose the brainiac, and Sterling the feral little brother are all part of the fun.
This collection is pure joy. It’s the kind of book you can pick up anytime for a guaranteed laugh and a reminder of the simple wonders of life. I signed up for an annual subscription to GoComics, so I can have Wallace delivered to my inbox every morning, and I downloaded countless favorites that I want to print and frame.
Henry has a real gift for bottling the magic of being a kid—the grand adventures in small places, the quirky logic, and the friendships that make it all worthwhile. This is a five-star book, no question. I can’t express enough how Wallace is a light of positivity, a blessing in our world.
Another wonderful collection from Will Henry. I realize that people often compare this series to Cul-de-Sac, Calvin & Hobbes, and Peanuts. I would add that there is some Fox Trot in there as well. I think this strip separates itself from them in how Will writes the parents. By that, I mean how the person comes across as so "real." You feel the love of their kids and the love for each other in a way that the other strips never achieve, especially for those parents who have them. I love how Wallace's family and friendships seem so grounded in my life and my relationships with friends. I just can't recommend this series highly enough for comic fans of all ages.
More tales of the open-hearted, adventurous Wallace, his tough-as-nails prankster buddy Amelia, his BFF, the insatiably hungry worrywart Spud, and his utterly feral little brother among others.
Wallace the Brave has become one of my absolute favorite comics out there: the delightful, quirky kid characters, its firmly grounded sense of place, humor and all-around heart.
The books have been huge in our household and have had many re-readings. I think we may have even read one to the point of deterioration. Sunday Funday is a compilation of some favorites that have made appearances in the other books, as well as some we haven't seen.
I love this comic SO much. The incredibly detailed and delightful artwork, the realistic and engaging characters, the wonderful family/friend dynamics, the snark!! These are just so much fun at every level.
Another wonderful, whimsical collection of comics, bursting with the joy and zany creativity of childhood. Guaranteed to have you chuckling throughout!
