Cryptids are real and The Lodge is a government reserve where they can live freely (except for fairies - because they will eat your face!).
The Lodge has agents who investigate the possible existence of cryptids anywhere in the world. The work in pairs (usually).
In essence, The series is kind of like an X-Files where the Mulder character is sasquatch named John "Proof" Prufrock.
The writing, by Alex Grecian, and the art, by Riley Rossmo, are excellent. This is a well conceived concept delivered beautifully.
The individual story arcs take us into this strange world in relatively stunning steps - there is nothing delicate about former policewoman Ginger Brown's introduction to the existence of cryptids. Nor is it even possible for her to be gently introduced to her new partner, Proof.
Grecian draws us into this world by throwing us in cold. We discover the world of the cryptids as unceremoniously as Agent-to-be Brown.
Rossmo (a fellow Calgarian) gives the world a very tactile feel with art that is fresh and just rough enough around the edges to give the book a distinctive atmosphere.
"PROOF Compendium Vol. a" contains the entire run of the Image series and the five-issue miniseries, "PROFF: Endangered."
started off very lukewarm on the all of it but it quickly gets going and the characters are fun I had no idea it was going to end by teasing a bunch of spin-offs that never existed that is wild. the art is so nice towards the end of it all. big fan of the mothman design and I'm probably the most bummed out that that never got more screen time. if image is testing the waters on bringing it back with the spin-offs by printing this cuz everyone has cryptid mania now that would make me pretty happy
