Celebrate Jungkook, the once-in-a-generation talent at the heart of BTS, in this illuminating look into the forces that have made him a global icon.
Jungkook is one of the world’s biggest stars, period. His first album, Golden, sold more than 2 million copies on the day of its release and stayed on the Billboard 200 for twenty-four consecutive weeks. How did a young prodigy from South Korea make music history?
The Meaning of Jungkook is a kaleidoscopic exploration of the forces that made Jungkook into the triumph he is today. The book does more than chronicle his humble beginnings in Busan and meteoric rise to fame. A lively narrative, it places Jungkook in a larger cultural and historical context, shedding light on the inner workings of the K-pop industry, internet culture, the ARMY, and more. We learn that Jungkook’s ruthless work ethic is a symptom of Korean culture and its singular pursuit for excellence; his style of dance places him in the lineage of Michael Jackson; and “the soldout king” has a unique visual appeal that meets high Korean beauty standards but also subverts it with his irreverent piercings and tattoos.
Jungkook’s success is not an accident. Talent and training, the livestreams and good looks, globalization and timing all contributed to the making of Jungkook, “the Golden Maknae,” the South Korean pop superstar who overcame the odds, and through his success, changed the status quo. This is an elevated tribute to the singer, for both his fans and others interested in the genre. Monica Kim has delivered a tour-de-force, filled with vivid detail, that makes sense of the world of a music icon who has captured the devotion of millions of fans worldwide.
The book portrays honest & succint view & observation on Jung Kook the main character. Jung kook being the golden Maknae of the world renowned group and yet received hates & sabotage from some fans of some members who are filled with jealousy over Jung Kook's talents and achievements. The writer is unhinged and fearless to write on her observations knowing the book could attract underisable comments from some readers. Yet, this is the beauty of the book, a neutral view from the unbiased one. Have a read, it is entertaining and insightful into the world of the global pop star, Jung Kook. Thank you for writing the book, Monica Kim
Being a Jungkook fan means loving more than just his music or visuals—it’s embracing the journey of someone who grew up in front of the world’s eyes and still managed to keep a piece of his heart real and unfiltered.
It means watching a 15-year-old boy with wide eyes and quiet charm grow into a confident man who dances like water, sings like his soul’s on fire, and laughs with a kind of warmth that sneaks under your skin.
To be a Jungkook fan is to know the duality: the golden maknae who can seemingly do everything—but also the introvert who overthinks, doubts, and grows like the rest of us. It’s cheering for his solo wins while still loving the boy who says “Bangtan is my everything.” It’s respecting his space while quietly waiting for every livestream, every tattoo reveal, every word he dares to share.
It’s being endlessly surprised and comforted at the same time. It’s hearing his voice in a dark moment and feeling like maybe, just maybe, you’re not alone.
And above all, it means loving him not for the perfection people try to paint him as, but for the complex, artistic, soft-hearted human he is becoming—one song, one laugh, one step at a time.
The author made this book without Jung Kook or BigHit/Hybe’s consent. It spreads misinformation and takes thing out context to insult and degrade his fellow BTS members. Just another money grab using ARMY and BTS.
I honestly went into this book really interested in seeing what insight the author would bring to the world about Jungkook and BTS but it was more of a fan talking about their love for a single idol. There was a lot of misinformation and things taken out of context that could cause harm to Jungkook and BTS if the wrong people were to read this book.
While it gives a good insight into who Jungkook is, it was written without his consent from my understanding and probably would be a lot better if his input was brought into it.
I did like that there was a spotlight on him, BTS and k-pop, it just seemed more of a book written by a fan.
This story is not just about fame, but the heart, soul, passion, his dreams, spirits behind it truly inspiring. He really came so far with so many obstacles in his way His journey just beginning of new era... Recommending this book you all should read.
"The Meaning of Jungkook" dives deep into what makes Jung Kook not just a beloved idol, but a cultural phenomenon. Monica Kim’s writing is vivid and thoughtful, offering insights into Jung Kook's personal journey, his artistry, and the broader cultural forces at play. It is refreshing to see a work that centers solely on him, not only as one part of a group, but as a once in a generation talent whose success rewrote global pop norms.
As a fan, it is incredibly moving to read something that honors his individuality without diminishing the role he plays in BTS. This book celebrates his growth, spirit, and brilliance in a way that feels honest and well earned. It is not just admiration, it is recognition.
Importantly, this book doesn’t pander to fan fantasy. It is a nuanced, elevated tribute grounded in real experience and observation. Whether you are a Jung Kook fan, ARMY or simply curious about K-pop’s global wave, this unofficial yet thoroughly illuminating account deserves your attention.
An incredible talent and an incredible human being. I think I admire Jung Kook even more after reading this - his humility, work ethic and dedication really shine through. The book didn’t tell us much we didn’t already know but it was interesting to read especially against the backdrop of the K-pop industry and Korean culture and society.
If I haven’t said this enough, I adore BTS and cherish every member. Their visual king with a kind heart, Kim Taehyung (V) is my Bias. But just like the rest of the fandom, Jeon Jungkook, the youngest member (Maknae) is our baby. Any hate directed towards this boba-eyed lad raises our maternal hackles, and we vicariously try to shield this man-child from the unsolicited venom.
And so when this book arrived as a gift from my personal Maknae, I had to dive into it with this very same affection. I admit, I was skeptical at first, assuming that this was yet another writer cashing in on the phenomenon that is BTS. I expected a rehash of all that we already know about JK and by extension, BTS.
But oh, it was so much more.
Charting the journey of a raw fifteen-year-old boy from Busan to one of the biggest International Pop Superstars is no mean feat. But the author, previously an editor at American Vogue, does it with aplomb. She juxtaposes the rise of the true underdogs, BTS with the cultural and societal minefield that South Korea is. The tremendous influence of the K-Pop industry, with its exacting standards, unrealistic expectations, and cut-throat competition that honed the rise of a mocked and unknown band to the global behemoth that BTS currently is, has been mapped out clearly in this book.
And at the heart of it, lies Jeon Jungkook.
Dividing the book into chapters exploring his origin story, his work ethic, his pitch-perfect voice, his hypnotizing dance moves, his unconventional looks that straddle cuteness with a bad-boy persona, the bond he shares with the fandom, his blend of confidence and humility….and ultimately, what endeared him most to me : his loyalty to his 6 members, his Hyungs who literally raised and shaped the bashful boy into the fine man that he is today.
As Jungkook put it: “You might say, I could be a manifestation of all their personalities coming together”. RM’s impeccable leadership skills, Jin’s caring and chaotic affection, Suga’s refusal to kowtow to unfairness, J-Hope’s ability to spread sunshine, Jimin’s kindness, and V’s steady loyalty and push for individuality are all mirrored in the complete package that is Jeon Jungkook….even as he retains his "Jungkookie-ness".
If I continue like that, I'll finally create a BTS shelf on Goodreads ! Just like there's one in my library ^^ Yes, I'm ARMY. And so is the author, a Korean-American ex-editor turned writer.
First, I know it's an unofficial biography, but I wish to stress that the author did a serious job and was very respectful. You know she's ARMY, she's a Jungkook fan and it shows. It didn't really teach me anything I didn't know about my favourite idol, but I learned more about Korean society and the kpop industry, their history, which was very interesting. The insider's view, both from a Korean and an American point of view, was a first for me and helped fill the gap between both cultures. It reads very easily (it took me a little more than one day), there is a list of sources at the end that takes up about 10 pages.
Not only is it interesting about Jungkook, BTS and Korea, but it also spoke of many references that I now wish to research to find out more about Korean music to expand my knowledge.
Do you like BTS or any other K-pop groups?🎤 I’ve been obsessed with K-pop Demon Hunters lately! The Meaning of Jungkook by Monica Kim, was super insightful to understanding the culture of K-pop but also why BTS has such an amazing fan base known as ARMY. I knew BTS was an underdog group, but it was always just something I was aware of, I didn’t ever really understand what they went through or how hard they worked to become so popular, especially in the US. I looked up several videos and replayed songs while I was reading so I could understand what the group was going through at different times. Jungkook is a star, and I remember when Charlie Puth said he has perfect pitch, I was truly impressed. I loved learning more about the youngest member of the group. But each member is really a star, and I enjoyed reading how they all love and support each other. I really enjoyed one and I think you would too! Thank you @simonbooks for this gifted copy! The Meaning of Jungkook published in June and you can find this on our Amazon storefront!🧜🏼♀️🌺
Unauthorised and utter nonsense of a book by someone who seems to be fixated on JK, it's cringe.
From what I read it's unimaginative and basic writing by someone I never heard of, legit there is no point to this book but for author to get her 5 minutes of fame. If I want to learn about BTS members they already shared enough themselves and there is authorised book called Beyond The Story that they themselves approved of which anyone who calls themselves true BTS fan should read. I don't need some clout chasing author looking to profit off of fans to tell me anything about any of the members. There are too many oportunists looking to make a buck by using names of BTS members and their fandom. Anyway I didn't spend money on this book as it would be a waste of said money.
The Meaning of Jungkook is a fresh take on the rise of one of the biggest pop stars. Readers get insight into the hard work, dedication, and training that equipped him with the right tools to set him up for success. There is also a look into his growth which I thoroughly enjoyed. He transformed right in front of fans and has still done his best to remain true to himself. I admit that I'm not too familiar with his background, but I still enjoyed reading this.
I feel like I didn't learn much new stuff from this book, as I've been following BTS's journey for about 10 years now, but it was nice to see the viewpoint of a fellow ARMY. While this book leans towards Jungkook as a soloist, it was nice to see some of the history of Kpop and how it has developed into what it is today. Now that all of them have returned from the military I'm anxiously anticipating the return of BTS.
The true story of the great Jung Kook seen from another perspective; realistic and true with reference to the musical phenomenon that is Jung Kook; a global phenomenon without a doubt with a GP who loves his musical work, his stage presence, his humility, charisma, etc. I completely agree with how the writer presented the Jung Kook phenomenon.
lol koreaboo. Monica Kim, more like MARGRET ANDERSON!!!!!!!!! The author seems to be obsessed with Korean culture and Jungkook. Forty seconds. It took forty seconds for this book to piss me tf off. Author needs to stick to writing Vouge articles, publishing books is not for everyone. A for effort I guess..... But F for everything else.
The piece skillfully encapsulates Jung Kook’s brilliance—his magnetic aura, immense talent, and undeniable star power. It delivers a sharp, focused glimpse into his artistry, offering a compelling snapshot of why he continues to mesmerize the world.
Un libro que refleja la gran persona y estrella que es Jungkook, alguien que debe ser reconocido aunque a muchos les moleste nunca se podrá negar su impacto.
