SubZero Vol. 2

Rate this book
It’s only been days since Clove, princess of the Cerulean Dragon Clan, arrived in the heartland of her enemies. Her marriage to Prince Kyro, the notorious Crimson Dragon, has been arranged in an attempt to end a centuries-long war and save her people. But Clove hides a secret, one that’s coming dangerously close to being exposed. As tensions—and attractions—mount between her and Kyro, she starts to wonder if he might not be the cutthroat enemy she thought, but a confidante who can be trusted. Everything changes with the arrival of the Grand Marshal, a general whose prowess over the last decades of war has garnered him near-total control over the Crimson Court—even over Kyro. What could he be hiding to wield such power?

The worst is yet to come when Clove comes face to face with assassins determined to expose her secret and end her rule once and for all. With her life on the line and her people at stake, will she be able to rely on Kyro, or will the Crimson Dragon rear its formidable head?

A lot more action than the first installment!! 🐉 (I can’t get over the same-face syndrome of the characters though 🫣)

2.5☆ ★SPOILERS★

●This review is for the entire webtoon until about episode 214●

I've got a lot of mixed feelings about this webtoon. While I do think it's really good in some aspects, I do believe it's very bad in many others.

My biggest issue with this was definitely the pacing. The story drags a lot. We start with Clove not being able to shift for some unknown reasons, and after more than 200 episodes, she is STILL unable to shift and furthermore we've only just discovered the real reasons she wasn't able to shift in the first place. I do understand the need to build suspense and intrigue, but when the reader is teased by a potential shift so many times, it gets a bit frustrating not seeing that.

Not to mention how annoying Clove was before she got her demi form. She got into so much trouble all the time, and Kyro was always the one to save her. From the very beginning, she was portrayed as a strong, independent woman, but we saw very little of that. She did start solving her own issues and was able to protect herself well after the demi form, but all this seems to be telling me is that she's frankly just useless without her dragon.

Even when Kyro had momentarily lost his shifting abilities, he still could do some hand to hand combat, so he wasn't completely relying on Red. Clove had been at the Palace for a few months before she'd been attacked by Raizo, so I found it really dumb how she hadn't done any self-defense classes or anything. You can't shift and can barely use your dragon powers, and you were just attacked and nearly died because you couldn't protect yourself. Did you really need to be harassed by Raizo to finally realise that you need to train?? Like, come on now.

It was extremely dumb of her to meet up with Raizo in the first place, but that's a whole other can of worms. This leads me to my next point.

The only reason why Clove went to meet up with Raizo was because Kyro had been shady towards her. The miscommunication trope is honestly the laziest thing a writer can do to push the plot and create drama. One conversation could have saved this entire situation. I do understand that it was a traumatic experience for Kyro, but Clove deserved to know what really happened to her mother. It took getting to an extreme point for everything to come out. Kyro should have been more truthful, and maybe then Clove wouldn't have been so easily manipulated by Raizo.

I'm not going to deny that the plot itself is interesting, but over time, it felt like to me it started being less about the romance and more about finding the vipers that it made me the plot seem like an action anime with arcs. Or like one of those webtoons with constant fighting arcs that lead to nowhere. In my opinion, the story should have ended in the Azure cave. The viper could have died, Clove would have shifted, and everything would have been resolved. Even this arc at the volcano island could have been a nice way to end it.

The art has also been progressively getting worse, so I feel like the story should have ended a while ago. Apparently, the next arc will be the last, and while I saw a lot of people being sad about it, I'm quite happy that it's ending soon. I took a break from webtoon in 2021, so I was quite surprised to see subzero still ongoing.

The plot is good, it’s interesting as you see a little bit more unfolding of the secrets that both characters have. What I can’t get is that these two people are supposed to be enemies. They were super against each other in the first book, and now in this book they show they care for each other right away. The prince calls the princess his girl, and while it would work later on in the story after they have gone through so much together, it just doesn’t work this soon in the plot. So not necessarily a true enemies to lovers story, more like this girl is annoying but I’ll marry her because she’s cute. I also don’t understand how the blue princess and the red princess are friends when their countries hate each other so much. Like, their people are killing each other but their royalty are best buddies? I understand that they want to end the war and make peace through the marriage unification but I’m sure there is supposed to be some kind of resistance from both parties to a certain degree before they realize they like each other. There’s a lot that’s not adding up for me and makes it hard to fully flow with the story.

This volume picks up right where the first lets off. Clove and Kyro continue to grow closer to one another while also learning to trust one another. This volume was a lot of miscommunication that could have been avoided had the price and princess just been honest. Of course, this leads to conflict, fighting, and growth. I still am really enjoying this romantasy series and am looking forward to the next installment this Fall.

Another solid and entertaining installment of a romantasy webtoon. I thought this moved pretty quickly as Kyro and Clove begin to slowly trust one another. A new member of the court is stirring the court drama pot and the assassination attempt had me turning the pages quickly.

And the saga continues!!! We learn more about the alliance, family secrets, and a few personal secrets of Clove's, along with Aaron's complicated feelings for her despite she's getting married. Trust hasn't full developed here yet, but when a plot to hurt the princess goes awry, Kyro's true colors show...
And then I get to the third book😭😭😭

Clove and Kyro start to get a little closer as the day of the wedding is looming, but Clove is still harboring the secret of her dragon powers. Then, Raizo, the fierce Grand Marshal, a general of the Crimson army, returns from the front, and he turns out to be a dastardly type -- with one golden eye and one blue. This mixed-blooded, cunning snake doesn't trust Clove or the alliance she's trying to broker between the two warring sides. In a moment of vulnerability, Clove finds herself tricked, without allies, and face-to-face with several assassins.

This series is full of beautiful illustrations, and the coloring is fantastic. The story has also gripped my heart with the many attractive characters on all sides vying for everyone's attention. Clove can be a damsel in distress at times despite her intellectual side that we saw in the first volume, and Kyro is actually starting to show he cares a little bit despite his continual protests that she's his enemy. I'm intrigued by the interactions we got between their dragons and hope we can see more of that in volume three.
