Disclaimer: We didn't realize this was part of a series. Might have enjoyed this more if we had already known the characters and the backstory.

Kid 1 declared they didn't really get it, and I do think this is darker/more serious than most of what we tend to read. It reminds me of Bone, but without nearly the same amount of slapstick humor to balance out the grim bits (and they did love Bone, so maybe it's just a matter of backstory).
