remains an absolute delight, it’s so refreshing and comforting to read such well written and clichè-free manga. As a whole, Hirayasumi captures the experience of late 20’s adulthood very well, alongside the experiences of so many well written and developed characters from all stages of life, all wrapped up in the most gorgeous and charming artwork.
I loved this volume. Hirayasumi, Volume 5 is another FANTASTIC fucking volume in an amazing series, and it's perhaps one of the most emotionally resonant yet. A full year has passed since Hiroto and Natsumi began living together, and the story uses this milestone to delve into the very real challenges of adulthood.
A central part of the book revolves around Hiroto's slow breakdown and his attempts to deal with adulting, a theme that feels incredibly real and touching. We see him push himself to take on extra work to pay for house repairs, all while trying to support his friend Hideki, who is struggling with the pressures of being a husband and father. The narrative beautifully portrays the complex weight of these responsibilities and the sacrifices people make for those they care about.
Everything with Natsumi is also so compelling. The volume continues to follow her journey as an art student, providing a glimpse into the demanding and sometimes harsh world she's trying to succeed in. I love the stuff with Hiroto pushing himself, but I fear the ending, and I hope he's not sick. The series does an excellent job of making you genuinely care about these characters and their futures.
Overall, this volume excels at building on its established themes of friendship, family, and the search for purpose. It's a deeply moving entry that solidifies Hirayasumi as a must-read series, capturing both the mundane and profound moments of life with a truly exceptional touch.
I've been thinking about this for a while, but I'm not that impressed by the chapters about Natsumi and her friends; it's the ones focused on the older members of the cast that stuck with me. I don't have a wife or kids, but I'm at that age where the grind of adult life is settling in so Hideki's struggles resonate with me more.
One of the best volumes yet! This manga really feels good, I’m happy every time I read it, I really recommend this for that slice of life (when that slice is nice).
Love is in the air, everyone is trying new things and things seem to be going well for all our characters.
I think this is my comfort read. I need a box set when it’s all said and done.
Hiroto's friend Hideki is not doing well.....new father....bottom rung at the furniture store where we works...can he cope? Hiroto is running from job to job as well.. Natsumi gets some help de cluttering her home.
This volume is a little less cheerful than the previous ones, as it deals with the problem of overwork.
There's Hideki, a young father, trying his best, but it's hard, between the estrangement in his relationship, the difficulties at work, the constant fatigue and the fact that he can no longer spend time with his friends, especially his best friend Hiroto.
On the other hand, Hiroto is of course saddened by his friend's estrangement but also worried about his general state. However, we sense that there's something else going on, as he takes on one job after another and wants to help out everywhere, forgetting about his own rest and his naive joy.
Meanwhile, there's also a funny story between a very minimalist and organized person and another with someone a bit more chaotic with messy apartment which she has to clean. It's a funny bit, and there's also a love triangle between them and Hiroto.
I’m running out of slice-of-life metaphors, but I will try and wheeze out just one more to say that this particular slice is made of very premium ingredients. Honestly, it might be the best example of its type I’ve read.
It is a story about life that feels like it is, indeed, about life and it both exults and judges Hiroto’s attitude, illustrating that it both works and does not work depending on the day or situation.
So, basically, life. The biggest arc in this volume is the way that Hiroto’s friend, Hideki, is being beaten down by everything around him. He’s bad at his job, his family life is in shambles, and Hiro is off to the side living in his slacker idyll.
When all of this stuff that he can’t control begins to weigh on him, he lashes out at Hiro, which is the only thing he can do anything about. It’s utterly childish and clearly from jealousy, but he doesn’t care. It’s as precise a portrait of despair as I’ve seen in some time.
It’s remarkable because Hideki’s been mostly a joke to the reader as well as kind of a jerk. Yet seeing his crisis is wrenching, and I don’t use that lightly - he contemplates taking his own life in one especially dark moment.
But, friendship, right? Hideki was there for Hiro before Hiro found his own footing in life (such as it is - he’s still very aimless in terms of goals) and, when it’s clear that Hideki is in trouble, Hiro makes sure he’s there for his friend. It’s a fantastic examination of the struggles of adulthood and a heartfelt treatise on friendship.
Amidst this, we also get some romantic entanglements as well. There’s a welcome resolution for two characters, who come together in a really sweet moment that conveys the sheer force of attraction between two people.
And Hiro’s complicated relationship with Tachibana continues to be one of the strangest non-love-triangle love triangle stories going. There’s nothing to say the novelist guy won’t end up a rival, but right now he and Tachibana seem as much a potential couple as Hiro and Tachibana.
The chapter with Hiro and Tachibana that examines fate and also comments, as does much of the volume, on the tendency of overwork in Japanese culture, is one of the best in the volume. And given the rest of the manga, that’s saying something.
Hiro’s life might not be especially deep, but that doesn’t mean the manga can’t be. By surrounding him with a diverse cast, I really wish we’d had more of Nat’s manga journey this time, and positioning Hiro to slowly figure out his future we get another fantastic volume with a lot more to it than you might expect.
5 stars - if last volume transitioned, this one showed that it was worth waiting for it to get here. A fantastic look into the lives of these characters with surprising depth and heart.
Each volume of this manga is a rollercoaster of feelings, and I love how easy it is to find yourself relating to almost every situation depicted.
Hideki’s personal and professional crisis, Hiroto’s desire for a quiet life disrupted by the need to make more money because life happens, and Natsumi’s art aspirations—everything is represented in a way that truly makes you feel like you’ve been through these experiences and know exactly how they feel.
This is my comfort reading, and each time I finish a tankobon, I feel like I’ve been in the company of friends. Here’s to many more volumes of this little gem
Nat tries to play it cool but she really loves Hiroto and is worried about him. I liked exploring more of the characters individually like Hideki and his work issues/being a father and husband and Ms. Tachibana and the writer. They felt really developed and I enjoyed seeing them also progress.
The flashback to Granny with the dress had me crying. She was so adorable, trying on the dress and snapping photos of herself.
With the way this volume ended, I think a change might be coming for Hiroto soon and I'm so excited .
Thanks to Edelweiss and Viz Media for the DRC! Very grateful to read this before it's release date.
Boy, seeing Hideki like that hit me harder than I would've expected. But I am close in age to them, so I get it, that reminiscing over your past/youth. Maybe I feel a little too much empathy haha. And Hiroto seeing stars while seeing Yomogi? Same man. Natsumi/Akari/Yamada: don't care. But the best chapter was the last one with the granny. I loved her pretty dress and how happy they made her. Maybe I even teared up, okay?
I enjoyed how dark this volume got at times and how it balanced out the series' usual lightheartedness. Hideki's struggles brought out some beautiful scenes between him and Hiroto, and I was deeply moved by their friendship. The flashback chapter with Granny also stood out to me, as we saw her mustering the nerve to buy a pretty dress for herself, despite her fears that she shouldn't be so indulgent at her age. I love how she inspires Hiroto in the present, even though was Hiroto who inspired her in the past. The result is an ouroboros of friendship and kindness... I'm looking forward to reading more about these characters.
I have never been sure how to review or log manga, because mostly this is what I read but I'm going to start here with this volume since it's the latest in the series that I've read.
Love the quietness of this story, the warmth of these characters. One of my favourite manga I've read. Love the recurring need of perfection and the weight of age and time on this earth. How those two ideas play into each other especially with the weight of feeling like a loser.
OMG the characters are so sweet!! will deffo reread this series! my rating for the series just keeps going up& up!
