I hate everything. Except the Music. Without music, the world is shit.
A fresh historical fantasy with a new musical magic system, great characters, and complex political/religious world. Excellent!!!
The storytelling here could literally be used in a class to teach story telling. I had to page through multiple times to captures the details needed for that twist ending that has my head spinning! The magic system and world building is excellent. It's elegant, well-planned, structured, and flowing. I will actually not be summarizing the religious system in detail here, because the way it is revealed in the Tome is part of the enjoyment. It wouldn't be spoiling the plot, I just think the experience of this one feels very fresh if you just start green.

A broad summary: Luca has a gift for playing the Bugle. He is used in war to lead advances and develops (or innately has) a gift for strategy. He is sought out by a Holy Leader who hides his face under an odd helmet resembling a spire. His Holiness takes him to his realm, where technological artifacts are kept in the tower. They make an agreement so that Luca can learn to read sheet music and become a Maestro and get out of this war-torn jawn. Luca's gifts are related being branch-hexed, and he meets other people with unique abilities. Each character has depth and flaws, no one is one-dimensional. There are great action scenes that add to the story without taking away from it.

C’est quoi ce manga ? A QUAND L’ANIME!

C’est une pépite ! Avis à tous les fans de Vinland saga / SNK LISEZ CETTE PÉPITE. C’est original. Bien pensé. Intelligent. C’est un must read de fou furieux !
Plus sérieusement : les personnages sont attachants intéressants et dérangés.
Les dessins sont d’une netteté et d’une précision OUF. Les angles de vue des planches sont faits pour être adaptés à l’écran. Pardon hein, mais ici pas de monotonie. Le plot est bien pensé. Mené d’une main de maître. Tout est réglé et coordonné comme une partition de musique. Les thèmes abordés aussi… je recommande *1000

A story that feels very inspired by Vinland Saga and Berserk but comes into its own by the end of the first volume. This volume lays the groundwork for what could be a very interesting series. The first chapter was a strong prologue, the second chapter let us know what the story was about, and the third chapter started to show what we can look forward to. Definitely enjoyed it👍🏼

So, this is one of the more unique manga series I’ve come across in a while.

In this first volume, readers are introduced to a world where sound becomes magic in the hands of a certain few, Branch-hexed folk.

Our protagonist, Luca, is one such person. Though young, his life has been full of war and conflict as his adoptive guardian has him working as a bugle player in his violent, mercenary band. When Luca’s abilities are discovered by the Pontiff during a skirmish, he finds himself quickly conscripted into a fight he’d do anything to escape. He just wants to be a musician—not a warrior.

It’s an interesting premise—particularly because of the sound magic and how it is used. The world and its lore are also fairly engaging. It’s unique in comparison to a lot of other epic, fantasy seinen stories.

Also, I enjoy the art style.

To me, it reads as a blend of “Eden of Witches” and “Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun”. It’s very aesthetic and crisp—while also retaining a sense of being quaint and kind of “folksy”. It does make the story feel more solidly set in a medieval-inspired world.

Anyway.

I think this is a good story so far. I’m definitely interested in reading more~

Finally I found another's fav manga series.
Banyak hal yang aku suka di manga ini.

Latar waktu ceritanya di era medieval yang penuh dengan perperangan, muncul lah para ramus, manusia yang punya kemampuan khusus dengan tanda fisik cabang tanaman tumbuh di kepalanya.

Kita mengikuti tokoh utama yang punya kemampuan meniup terompet sebagai sinyal dan strategi perang. Kemampuan nya tidak hanya meniup terompet biasa, namum juga bisa melihat suara, yang pada akhirnya tiupan terompet itu muncul layaknya pola yang bisa terliha sehingga menjadi strategi perang untuk para pasukan. Unik dan menarik.

Dunia yang di ciptakan pun sangat bagus, perang muncul karena perebutan wilayah. Wilayah dengan tower-tower khusus menjadi wilayah utama yang diperebutkan, karena tower tersebut menyimpan banyak hal seperti arsip ilmu pengetahuan, senjata, dan barang-barang perang lainnya.

Artstylenya sangat bagus, dari segi apapun bagiku manga ini sudah sempurna. Alur ceritapun baru volume pertama sudah menyajikan plot twists yang tidak ketebak. Tinggal lanjut ke volume selanjutnya.

super unique take on fantasy, this first volume surprised me fa sho.

whenever i played dark souls or elden ring, and fought that one enemy that sounds the horn to alert all the other enemies, I always thought they were a joke, a nuisance, but this story turned that meek role into something really neat. i’ll keep reading this one on shonen jump

Très envie de les enchaîner. Ce premier tome est hyper prometteur. Le traitement est plutôt original, les traits du dessinateur hachés mais détaillés ce qui représente bien la confusion de la guerre, le héro est attachant (j'adore les persos ronchons). Bref très très envie de lire la suite !

C'est clairement le genre de seinen que j'adore et qui me fait vibrer 🤌
L'univers (très sombre) est absolument incroyable, un début d'intrigue politique des plus intéressantes (guerre), des personnages qui s'annoncent être haut en couleur, et un système de magie original, que demander de plus.
Et en plus, je l'ai lu hyper rapidement tellement c'est prenant, bref lisez , surtout si vous aimez les mangas avec des vibes à SNK et Vinland saga 😏

Quand Ki-Oon a commencé, il était pour moi un éditeur de manga de fantasy, c’était leur branche emblématique. Je suis ravie de les voir, après s’être tant étendu, revenir de temps en temps à leurs amours. Ce fut le cas avec leur hit Frieren qui nous prenait à contre-pied, c’est à nouveau le cas avec The Bugle Call où là aussi la surprise est de mise.

En cours au Japon avec 6 tomes à ce jour, ce seinen d’aventure est le bébé d’un jeune duo d’auteurs qui se rencontre ici et nous surprend d’emblée par la solidité de leur projet. Que ce soit au niveau dessin ou scénario, on sent une base très solide chez chacun, ce qui donne un beau socle de départ à l’oeuvre et ne peut que mettre en confiance. Ils reprennent certes des éléments narratifs connus : héros qui ne souhaite pas en être un, troupe de mercenaires, duo vieux briscard / jeune prodige, et j’en passe… mais ils offrent autre chose autour.

Les amateurs de fantasy ne seront pas dépaysés. Nous retrouvons le portrait du héros prodige qui a des pouvoirs surprenants et qui vient d’une minorité. Tiens, Rand Al’Thor ! Luka, jeune orphelin de 14 ans, va se retrouver embarqué comme meneur d’hommes dans une guerre quasi religieuse autour de sombres artefacts vraiment imposants et mystérieux. Mais lui, il n’en a que faire et c’est là tout le charme. Lui, il veut juste faire de la musique et vivre une vie paisible. Quel bonheur de tomber sur ce genre de héros qui n’est pas en adoration devant la guerre et la violence, ou dans une quête de vengeance, mais qui va plutôt chercher à en sortir, car il n’en a que trop vu. Merci !

J’ai été ravie de ce twist dans l’histoire, qui certes est une histoire sombre. Elle démarre quand même en suivant une troupe de mercenaires avec toutes les exactions qu’on imagine. Elle se poursuit avec de bonnes grosses scènes de batailles. Luka va quand même devoir participer à la guerre et va découvrir que son pouvoir naissant est très utile dans ces cas-là. Il a même été formé à son insu à sa direction. Et il va même être impliqué dans un conflit encore plus vaste. Mais l’ADN de l’histoire et de son héros est autre, il est pacifiste et qu’est-ce que ça m’a plu.

Je n’ai tout de même pas boudé mon plaisir face à ce monde imaginé par Mozuku Sora, tout droit sorti des codes de la Dark Fantasy. On y retrouve notamment un gentiment sombre duo maître-élève, qui m’a beaucoup fait penser à Askelad-Thorfinn de Vinland Saga, le côté vengeance en moins. Il y a également des pouvoirs originaux. Je crois que c’est la première fois que je vois un pouvoir tel que celui de Luka. J’ai trouvé ça très ingénieux de la part des auteurs, car percutant et visuel. J’ai aimé leur narration, fort entraînante mélangeant percussion des batailles et mystères des secrets de l’ordre que rejoint Luka. C’est encore plus le cas avec la révélation finale, qui cependant sort de nulle part et me semble difficilement crédible si elle n’est pas accompagnée de détails venant justifier son impossibilité… Que voilà dont un début efficace ! Après tout s’enchaîne facilement, un peu trop, un peu vite. J’attends une suite qui prend le temps de creuser et creuser les personnages, les groupes, leurs intentions, etc.

Ki-Oon revient joliment aux sources avec ce titre au scénario qui semble être de la Dark Fantasy classique mais qui réserve une belle surprise avec son héros qui rejette la violence dans laquelle il vit pour célébrer la douceur et le plaisir de vivre, mais qui va devoir s’y confronter pour l’obtenir. Une première oeuvre diablement efficace malgré quelques reprises faciles. On n’a qu’une envie y retourner pour en percer les mystères et voir si le héros réalise son rêve.

En voilà une nouveauté qui me faisait vraiment envie pour le coup. Très intriguée par le résumé, j’étais très curieuse de découvrir ce qu’allait nous réserver cette histoire. Et wow cette lecture a été passionnante de la première à la dernière page. Maintenant je n’attends qu’une seule chose : que la suite soit disponible. J’ai si hâte de découvrir la suite de cette histoire, qui je pense sera incroyable. Ce premier tome nous pose les bases de toute l’histoire et nous maintient en haleine du début jusqu’à la fin.

Dans ce premier tome, Luka, orphelin recueilli par le chef d’un groupe de mercenaires, n’est pas comme les autres : une branche pousse sur son crâne et il peut voir les sons, matérialisés par des traits de lumière… Le seul à lui parler sans crainte est son père adoptif, aussi fin stratège qu’impitoyable au combat. À 14 ans, Luka a déjà vu assez d’horreurs pour une vie. En tant que clairon, il est de tous les affrontements, transmettant les ordres via son instrument. En réalité, il n’a qu’une envie : échapper à ce quotidien fait de violence pour devenir musicien. Seulement, la bataille qui s’annonce pourrait être sa dernière : cette fois, il doit prendre les armes… et surtout, parmi ses opposants se trouvent d’autres « branchus’ dotés de divers pouvoirs surnaturels ! Ils font un massacre dans les rangs de Luka, et ce dernier, blessé, se saisit d’un clairon pour sonner la retraite… C’est alors que son véritable pouvoir se dévoile et évite une déroute complète à ses alliés.

J’ai beaucoup aimé ce premier tome comme je viens de le dire. Je trouve que l’univers est hyper intéressant et surtout très bien construit. On se pose pas mal de questions au fil de notre lecture. On découvre des tas de choses qui nous intrigue. J’ai adoré découvrir ces « branchus », ces gens ayant des branches qui pousse sur le crâne et qui sont dotés d’un pouvoir. J’ai trouvé ça fascinant j’ai adoré. Côté personnage, j’ai beaucoup aimé découvrir Luka. Son pouvoir à lui c’est voir les sons et surtout, il peut diriger les gens avec sa musique. Son personnage est très intéressant, un brin touchant, il ne faut pas oublier que ça reste un gamin de 14 ans. Lui tout ce qu’il veut faire dans la vie c’est être ménestrel. Tout le reste lui donne la gerbe comme il le dit si bien. Lorsqu’il se retrouve avec des gens comme lui, dirigé par un pape, je ne peux m’empêcher de me poser des questions. Ce fameux pape, je m’interroge beaucoup sur lui, j’ai la sensation qu’il joue double jeu ou alors qu’il cache quelque chose au fond de lui. Je ne sais pas mais je ne le sens pas du tout.. Je sens qu’à un moment il va se retourner contre Luka.. Du moins c’est la sensation que j’ai..

Ce premier tome m’a complètement conquise et je suis déjà très impatiente de découvrir la suite! Surtout quand je vois la fin! Je me posais déjà énormément de questions mais avec une fin comme celle ci je ne peux empêcher mon cerveau de bouillir. Le côté pouvoir m’a fasciné, j’ai vraiment adoré. Le rythme est superbement bien mené , on ne s’ennuie pas une seule seconde en tout cas. Vivement la suite!

Vinland Saga meets Fire Emblem

The tone set out in Bugle Call’s first chapter is immaculate and took me a little off guard. This first volume was gritty, violent and (most importantly) quite grounded for a shounen jump series in its depictions of war.

I was also very happy to see that Luca isn’t your traditional shounen protagonist. He still has a passion he’s willing to doggedly pursue and his want to learn to read music is something that pulls on my heartstrings but, as a character, he’s quite abrasive which I think is great!

I think the Tactition role Luca is taking on is interesting and, seeing this, I’m reminded of my time playing similar tactical RPGs in the past and the fun I’ve had playing those but I’m not entirely sure if it’s the most fun to read about? There was talk about strategy at the start with how battle formations work and the first battle Luca takes charge of is relatively simple but it was nice to see some of the teaching he’s had in the past come into use.

However, the fight where Miura, one of Luca’s fellow super-powered battle units, is implemented was quite dull in contrast. I’m hoping this is just a ‘rule of cool’ display of what’s to come when we get more super-powered characters introduced and can see them come to blows in battle but ‘my super fast guy can solo this army’ was a little boring for me personally.

The ‘twist’ with the Pontiff at the end of the volume was a bit strange, I didn’t really get it or see the point of it to be honest and walks back some of the gritty realism the series had in the first chapter but I’m willing to wait and see. I’m sure this will be developed further and explained in future volumes.

I’m gonna keep going with it. The tone and our main character has sold the series enough to continue on!

I’m sure though that a few fellow musicians will be a bit put out by the fact that half way through the manga called ‘Bugle Call’ focusing on a bugler, Luca gets rid of his bugle and is handed a trumpet instead. (It’s a very minor point but still irks me a little! 😂)

J'entends beaucoup parler de ce premier tome depuis sa sortie. J'étais intriguée et curieuse de savoir pourquoi et de l'histoire qui y est raconté. Cependant, je ne m'attendais pas à ce que ce manga soit aussi épais, je suis habitué à 190 pages environ, ici, il en fait 60 de plus.
Nous suivons donc Luka, un jeu homme de 14 ans environ qui a le poste de clairon dans une troupe de mercenaires qui combat aux côtés de l'un des empires de ce monde. Son rêve est d'apprendre la musique et de devenir ménestrel, toutefois, ayant été sauvé et élevé par la troupe, il a une dette envers celle-ci, jusqu'à quand, mystère.
Luka est un personnage attachant, il en a vu des horreurs avec les autres mercenaires, il a appris à se détacher de la vue des morts, mais au fond de lui, il reste un jeune garçon qui rêve de devenir musicien. Il a aussi son caractère et n'hésite pas à négocier son futur.
Pour le moment, on a juste fait connaissance avec les autres "branchus" de l'empire pontifical et du pape qui je l'avoue au premier abord, m'a surprise avec sa tête de flûte traversière, mais ce n'est qu'un casque au final.
Ce monde est en guerre perpétuelle pour le contrôle de tours, c'est un monde violent où l'on n'est pas à l'abri de mourir. Ce n'est pas le genre d'histoire qui me passionne, toutefois, le pouvoir de Luka et des autres branchus est vraiment intéressant. On ne sait pas encore pourquoi ils existent, quelle est cette ancienne civilisation qui a érigé les tours. Et l'entourloupe sur l'identité du pape, j'ai eu un moment de flottement à sa découverte.
En conclusion, malgré un thème qui ne m'attire pas de base, j'ai adoré ma lecture. J'ai été happé par l'histoire et par les mystères qui entourent nos protagonistes. Les dessins sont plaisants, le rythme est bon, cela ne traîne pas en longueur. Ce premier tome fut une très belle découverte.

Although perhaps the most nihilistic title you will read this year, there is still something interesting here. A combination of horror, magic, and sci fi, this volume sets up a plot that is intriguing.

Story: Luca is a bugler in a mercenary troop - he issues orders through his instrument for his commander. Taken in as an orphan, he has only known the hell life of war. But Luca isn't ordinary; there is a branch growing out of his head and he can see the music he creates. Turns out, Luca has powers that are going to be very sought after in a coming great battle. For a war is brewing for ultimate control of the mysterious spires in the world, each housing priceless alien technology and knowledge.

The premise is as strange as it comes: remnants of a former alien civilization (spires) are fought over in a medieval setting. But a few humans, each having a branch of some sort growing from their head, will exhibit special powers. A great war is coming as the 'hexed' (who exhibit powers starting at age 14) are grouping for a great epic battle for control of all the spires. The question will be whose power is the greatest to turn the tide of battle?

The art is a bit smudgy but not too hard to follow. Certainly, it suits the darkness of the story well. There is a lot of violence and horror, especially in the beginning. But there is something interesting here that makes it worth the read. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Finally reading this with official translations physically is such a dream!

Lucas is such a great POV and MC to follow and the story reads almost like a tactics RPG come to life (on the page obviously). Zoe and Miura are already unique and interesting characters I feel either connected to or interested to learn more about and THAT END OF VOLUME REVEAL???? WHAT DOES IT MEAN.

Really good art, really engaging story, super creative power system??? What more could a shounen head WANT!!

If you're a fan of tactics RPGs like fire emblem or final fantasy tactics, and medieval era media like Vinland saga... this is for SURE A MUST READ!

I think this was a really interesting series but I’m a bit mixed on how I want to react to it.

I think the powers were fascinating and the proxy war was really interesting as a concept. The mirror and heaven fall ramus were cool as hell.

I also think it’s interesting that I don’t always feel like I’m rooting for the protagonist.

Some negatives is that I think the relationship between Zoe and Lucas is really weird. Additionally, there are a lot of translation issues around character names and genders which pair with the fact that characters often look similar or wear disguises to make me really confused who is saying what.

This took me completely by surprise. I was given it to read for work, it hadn't captured my attention but I fell in love with the potential of the story immediately. The illustrations of the buildings and the armies awed me every single time. The characters are interesting and their dynamics have only begun to evolve, but I'm definitely looking forward to see how they develop. I thought the plot would be rather straight forward but I feel like I'm going to be surprised multiple times as the series continues. If you like historical, or any war and strategy type of stories, I definitely think this is one for you. And even if you just like 13th century aesthetics, definitely worth the read.

Now this is interesting. 5*. Let's stat with art. It is awesome, period. And I also like how artist integrates symbolism in drawings. As for the story, it is dark fantasy at its best. If you are into stuff like SNK, check this one out. It is dark and has some SNK level plot twists. Just imagine if protagonist was Armin with more confidence. The protagonist is a strategist rather than a fighter. Which is refreshing. Some similarities can be drawn to Vinland Saga as well as it does explore nature of wars. Highly recommend.

Strong start to a series. Bugle Call is set in a medieval-inspired, dark fantasy world. It actually feels mostly grounded, with the exception of the few characters with superpowers. In this world, they're called branched, apparently because of the branch-like horns they grow. Each one has a unique power set. Main character Luca starts out being able to see the music he makes on his war bugle, and eventually learns how to make that music visible to others. This is a gritty book, without being gory or vulgar. Still, it's not for me, despite all its strengths in character and world building.

Questo primo volume mi ha davvero intrigato. Mi piacciono molto i disegni e la storia ha un'originalità che, ultimamente, trovo molto di rado. Il Worldbuilding sembra ben articolato e ricco. Non manca avventura né momenti di riflessione. Un primo numero completo e accattivante.

Fine start to a series. Some people have powers, they're at war, and uh... each side wants to win the war, I guess? The main character's power of using sound to move people like chess pieces on the field of battle is cool, I've enjoyed some of the tactical approach of other series like Kingdom and this puts a special flare to it. But I think it's going to come down to how other magical powers factor into fighting against each other, since so far everything basically just works out.
