EN This volume brings together three distinct arcs, each with its own atmosphere.
The first one recalls the classic Poirot stories, where several characters are gathered in the same place and, after a murder, the challenge is to discover who among them is the culprit. I really enjoyed this arc, although it feels too short. It had the potential to be further developed, but it’s clear that it mainly serves as a tribute to this type of narrative.
Next comes an arc centered around a party that brings together several schools, where Anya once again tries to win the attention and recognition of the second son — a dynamic that has already been explored in previous moments, but still manages to deliver entertaining situations.
Finally, a particularly interesting story that dives into the past of Henry Henderson and Martha Marriott, exploring their relationship and revisiting the harsher times of the war between East and West.
A volume that offers a fun, varied, and consistently engaging read.
I enjoyed these slow-paced chapters a lot because they focused more on world-building and characters' backstories like Henry and Martha; their story is heart-wrenching, and the sentiments Endo-sensei is conveying are relevant to this day.
Spy X Family books are always a dopamine booster and this was no exception. This volume was very Anya-focused (which I always love) and also delved into the surprising backstory of two side characters. So fun!
This is probably my favorite recent volume. It balances two overlapping stories, one very cute and funny story with Anya, and the other a more tragic backstory for another character, very well.
Although I love Spy x Family best when it's funny (welcome back, Wet Bond!), Endo's ability to also make it poignant while capturing the horrors of WWII are also stunning. This volume, which takes us into Mr. Henderson's not-so-elegant past, is a striking portrait of how war affects everyone, both past and present. It's not pretty. It's not funny. It's not meant to be, and that Endo can make it as emotional as he does is a testament to the strength of this series.
When I started this manga I thought it was just some cute found family story, but wow, the anti-war messaging is so powerful. And of course Damianya at the dance is adorable.
This volume started strong even if it was just a locked room mystery that a classic mystery writer would have written flaws and all. But then the minutia of school politics and social classism for a dance. It was so bad. Then we get chapter after chapter of Mr Elegant's life as a student and the girl he loved. Not elegant at all. 2.5 stars - boring - does not advance the overall story.
Super cute update with Anya and Damian dancing. Those little family side quest are always a favorite! I miss Yor and Loid though. I want more of the main characters but this was still very nice.
