Another wonderful volume!

I love seeing how much Mio has grown! She is so much more direct, confident in her worth and identity, and willing to stand up for justice no matter the risk or cost. Granted, that last one isn't new for Mio throughout this series, but I never imagined that the new character we meet is definitely NOT for her! I mean he SEEMS like he is, but I disliked him more and more as the volume went on and am NOT looking forward to seeing more of him!

That is especially true in light of all the very sweet romance!!! Oh my goodness, the ship is sailing and things are NOT going well because of outside circumstances! Just when she has solved the "mystery" surrounding Yuri's mother (and had a very special moment with Yuri), she is faced with another hardship that leaves her far away from everyone she knows!

That's upsetting in itself, but it's even more upsetting knowing what had happened beforehand between her and her Dad! It was a very unexpected moment that I didn't think I would be excited about, but I found myself very emotional, thankful, and blinking back tears. Very beautiful!

I'm definitely excited for the next volume, even though I am so sad it's the last one! I will miss these characters because they have been so very wonderful, but know it will end strong!

So, uh... Everything that Mio and other unhumans have experienced was caused by a misunderstanding or unnamed characters. The shit Gudol put his daughter through can't be explained away by "I had to lie to the senate about using you as a weapon to prevent you from being killed." Huh?

Reminder, the guy brought in a fake daughter to the engagement party. He also put Yuri in prison in Vol 1 after hearing that Mio wanted to live in Blognig as her true self (whether or not he knew about Yuri's punishment of having his tendons sliced is unknown, but he allowed Urgathe to choose whatever punishment he wished).

Also, please for the love god don't have major character assassination for July right at the end. (Also, Lou does nothing despite being on the cover art.)

So Chika/Yuri and Mio take the most roundabout way to admitting that they like each other I’ve ever read. And Mio’s father is just a parent who did the wrong things for the right reasons…kinda?!?! But one test of character later, they’re officially engaged and on their way to a happily-ever-after.

Then the dragon kidnaps the princess.

Honestly, I’m shocked that the series is supposed to end in the next volume, because this sets up so much more drama. And it’s drama that makes sense, not that contrived Nini nonsense.

This series has 7 volumes.

Read on the Viz manga app. It’s the Viz manga edition in English that’s not listed on this website.

The story moves too quickly; there isn't enough development for each issue before it's resolved. I'm not a fan of how Mio's abusive father was handled in this volume.

Loved it. I can believe the drama turn around. Im sad is not going to expand because the following is the final volume.

In this penultimate volume, Mio and Chika assert their love for each other and their wish to remain engaged, not just for the good they could bring for human-unhuman relations but also for their own feelings. However, a new antagonist - the last Elementsia - shows up to pose new challenges.

I had been expecting the cast to find a country where Unhumans oppress Humans, since we've seen every variation of countries where Humans oppress Unhumans, and Mio challenging oppression there too seems like the logical next step for the story and her character growth. However, I'm not a fan of the forced love triangle with July, which feels like a tired trope.

If the world is full of kingdoms dealing with both humans and unhumans, why don't any of them have reasonable governance or parity?

Not a super big fan of the framing of its ending but I also don't think this series will go there. Just an unfortunate framing. At least I'm hoping.
We get some really lovely Prince Chika x Mio as a bit of angst develops between the both of them. But they eventually realize both feelings are genuine and continue to go forth with their marriage out of both love and for the good of the nation. The second half gets super good with an excellent development in the dragon whisking Mio and July away. There we get the Kingdom of Yah'En with a nice change of scenery in a more traditional Chinese aesthetic. It's a kingdom where the oppressed have become the oppressor leading naturally to some friction from July and Mio. July seems to have left his exclusionary ways but doesn't want such extremes and Mio does want more power to unhumans but equality not totalitarianism. It's a nice contrast and clash of ideals that I can't wait to see how it'll unfold. July's love triangle deal with Mio really fosters here too as the Dragon is such a great manipulator playing into his love for her to keep him and by proxy her stuck (along with threatening to kill a child if Mio leaves). There was a chapter that implies they fuse or come together which I'm interested in how that will happen. Maybe it's a false prophecy OR what I'm betting on is an ideological merging where they all end up agreeing to Mio's view.
I really enjoyed the wrinkle they added to the queen's character here. Last volume we learned that Chika's kingdom is in the process of becoming exclusionary like Mio's country. It was assumed that the Queen was in earnest but it turns out to be more of a "I'm doing the will of the people” thing where she still cares for them and looks out for them through aiding their immigration into safe countries and funding orphanages and similar things for the unhumans. We get something similar in Mio's Dad who suddenly reveals their kingdom kills unhuman royalty but his love kept her alive by pleading that she can be a weapon. It's a tad of a retcon but I also think the door was left open for this in case they did get enough story to reveal it which they did. I do wish it was maybe hinted at more but again I think this choice was a “if we get popular enough and have enough volumes let's expand and do it” so I don't blame them doubling down on it from chapter one.

Mio’s fathers excuse for his treatment of her is *so weak*. I don’t believe him or think that it excuses any of his behavior toward her, and I actually hate that she forgave him so quickly.

Pomeri’s reasons for hiding her true intent toward unhumans is also pretty weak. You’re in charge of your entire kingdom. I understand that realistically, politics have more semantics than necessary and most rulers can’t just make these choices by themselves. But that sure doesn’t feel like the case in this world.
