The Soul Instinct

Rate this book
From Beatrice Dixon, founder of The Honey Pot Company, comes an inspiring memoir about overcoming adversity—personally and professionally—by trusting her intuition and following what she calls her “soul instinct” to build the life of her dreams.

Beatrice Dixon, cofounder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, shares the powerful story of how trusting her dreams—and her inner voice—led her to build a groundbreaking wellness brand.

The Honey Pot Company was born from a literal dream, in which Dixon’s late grandmother shared a recipe for an herbal remedy. When Dixon woke up, went to her kitchen, and formulated what would become the brand’s first product.

But Dixon’s story didn’t start—or stop—there. From being born a premature baby without a nose or forehead to navigating a scrappy adolescence, and pitching a vaginal wellness brand to rooms full of male investors, her journey has been anything but conventional. Through it all, she relied on her “soul instinct” to guide her.

Part memoir, part self-help, The Soul Instinct is a raw, motivating look at the power of inner wisdom from one of the most influential voices in wellness today—and one of the few Black women to raise significant venture and private equity capital. This book will inspire readers to tap into their own intuition and own their story.

Thank you Gallery Books and Beatrice Dixon for sending me a free copy of THE SOUL INSTINCT.

I firmly believe books find their way into your life at the right time. I desperately needed something to jolt me out of this weird funk and THE SOUL INSTINCT helped recharge my mental batteries. An inspiring memoir that provides great advice.

Beatrice Dixon is the founder of The Honey Pot Company, a feminine care brand that promotes vaginal health. The products can be found at major retailers like Target and Walgreens. Was the road to get there easy? No, she’s a Black woman trying to make it in a male dominated world and women’s health issues aren’t exactly taken seriously. Throw in the fact that talking about vaginas makes many people uncomfortable. So yeah, she had an uphill battle trying to expand her business. She was determined though as she believed in herself and her products.

There’s so much to take away from this book and it was refreshing that she was so open and honest about her life. She’s been resilient from the get go dating back all the way to her birth. She’s isn’t afraid to keep pushing forward even when rejections and obstacles stand in her way. It’s worth noting that there’s not a clear cut path to success and she took a bit of a curvy road to get there, but she got there. Having faith in yourself is so important.

A big kudos to Beatrice and her company for doing their part and recognizing women’s health concerns so we can remove this embarrassment that often comes when dealing with vaginal health issues.

I've seen The Honey Pot Company products here and there and knew the founder is a Black woman but did not know her story. I was genuinely curious s to what led her to deciding to create a line of herbal feminine hygiene products and thought this sounded like a good pick up.

Dixon's story is very interesting to begin with, as to how she was conceived and that her mother's pregnancy may have eventually contributed to her health through life. She also talks about her health issues and how that eventually led to Honey Pot, including the creation of the product lines to navigating starting up in a small business to becoming a national brand.

It was okay. At first I definitely found her life story compelling. But as the book wore on, it became less so. I totally understand the struggles of starting up and growing a business (plus Dixon having to work in a world dominated by white male men) meant her path was going to be a little different but must of the business side of things really did not interest me as much. Like others have commented it did start to feel like she felt a need to defend her business decisions which was not as interesting for me.

All the same, I think Dixon's story is still very important. It is not easy to start and grow a business and that is even more so for Black women. Let alone getting your product in a chain like Target! However, I would not see this as a business-type of book that tells you step by step how she did it. It is, as others note, more of a part biography and part self-help book with some mix of business commentary.

Borrowed from the library and that was best for me.

Beatrice Dixon wasn't supposed to make it. With odds stacked against her before she took her first breath, Bea wasn't supposed to make it. Expected to pass before she was even a few days old, Bea's mom said, "Not my baby." Through the help of intense intervention and several surgeries, including the construction of a nose, Bea left the hospital for the big wide world.

The Soul Instinct takes the reader through Bea's life from start to current. From growing up with her family, moving around a few times, to her wild child time in her 20s, Bea details everything leading up to the creation of her company The Honey Pot.

I really enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look into how her company started, what she learned along the way and how she used her life experience to channel the success The Honey Pot has found.

Bea is an imperfect human, and within her story is layers and complexities, especially around her spirituality. She also doesn't hide anything, even when it may have negative connotations. There is an unfiltered honesty that I really resonated with and it made The Soul Instinct a compelling memoir.

Thank you to Gallery Books for the gifted copy.

This is an inspiring and deeply personal read that blends memoir with empowering life lessons. I was drawn to her honesty as she shares her journey, from a challenging start in life to building The Honey Pot Company. What stood out most to me was her unwavering trust in her intuition, even when facing rejection and navigating a male-dominated industry. Dixon's voice feels raw, authentic, and motivating, especially as she opens up about her struggles, spirituality, and growth. I appreciated how she normalized conversations around women’s health while also highlighting resilience and self-belief. While some moments felt reflective and introspective, they added depth to her story. This book left me inspired to listen more closely to my inner voice and embrace my own path.

Wow! What a story! What an incredible and thought provoking story. Beatrice swings for the fences in this part memoir, part self-help book. I can't say that I resonated with every part, but that is kinda the whole point, right?! It's Bea's story and journey, but I can say reading this allowed me to expand my thinking in some ways and explore my own personal journey in other ways. There were lessons that she learned that truly resonated with me and had me thinking deeply. I also love that she said vagina a whole lot!

Go into this one with eyes wide open as there are some, "oh wow ...ok" moments here, but stay for the entire ride, you won't be disappointed.

3.5/5

Bea's memoir reads like a love letter written to herself — and it's all the better for it. From fighting for her life as a newborn to navigating health struggles she refuses to sugarcoat (yes, including her vagina), she tells her story with a rare, disarming honesty. Rooted in her ancestral connections and unwavering in her core mission, she owns every misstep as part of her healing. The result is deeply personal, but the wisdom that surfaces along the way has a way of finding you exactly when you need it.

I wanted to love this book. The chapter titles and her success as a business owner are both inspiring. The beginning had me all in and excited to continue. There is a portion of the book that felt defensive of her life and business choices and I hoped she would push past them instead of defending them. That defensive part adds to her story of the obstacles she’s gone through and how she’s had to endure. Overall, there is a message there and I’m glad to have read her memoir.

When I saw that Beatrice Dixon was writing a book, I was pretty excited to read it. As a longtime fan and consumer of The Honey Pot products, I wanted to learn more about her journey, what inspired her to start the brand, and also the importance of a product line designed with black women in mind. This book delivered that and more and I found her journey to be very inspiring.

Bea’s story is inspiring. From the moment she was conceived to today, she has made her presence known. Reading about her journey to self discovery, honing in on her power, and walking out her truth is both humbling and motivating. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Bea and she’s incredible. Now having a glimpse into her life makes me double down on that sentiment.

I was familiar with Honey Pot before they were available in national retailers. I heard the story of how Ms. Dixon got her recipe for her products, but I was unprepared to learn her origin story. This book is under 200 pages- a great length to discuss Ms. Dixon's journey to now. It is honest, spiritual, and a good read for specialized reading groups.

I LOVED the first half! The second half felt a like defense of her decisions, both personally and for her business.

It’s a shame because the first half of the book is full of vitality and curiosity.
