The Art of Jock is 200+ pages of pure Thrill Power.

The in-depth essay at the beginning of the book charts the course of his career drawing for the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. It contextualises all of the following artworks and allows the artist to explain how his style and technique has evolved.

What I like most about Jock’s art is the freedom of his line work. It can have a rough unpolished finish that retains the gestures of his drawing hand. As his career has progressed he has simplified and pared back his rendering. In the essay he explains how he does most of the work at the inking stage, only loosely pencilling beforehand. That he incorporates influences from fine art and not just the world of comic book art makes his work more appealing to me.

Rebellion’s big black and white original-art sized books are great for 2000AD’s 1980’s materials. (I’m still holding out for ‘The Rogue Trooper art of Dave Gibbons’. If that notional volume had a lot of what was in the first Titan RT volume it would be an immediate purchase for me.)

In contrast, this art book format is better for the “drawn digitally on a tablet” years. It allows for a greater mix of source materials: original scripts, concept sketches, character designs, and rough page layouts.

I’d like to see more books in this style, ideally for Colin McNeil, Frank Quietly, and Steve Yowell to start with. Rebellion has just released a Sean Philips volume. It will be interesting to see which artist they feature in their next release.
