OLD FRIENDS, MEMORABLE Filled with fan-favorite characters including Lorelai and Rory, Miss Patty, Luke, Sookie, and more
BEAUTIFULLY Original full-color illustrations bring the town and residents of Stars Hollow to life in a brand-new way
I saw this book on TikTok and texted my best friend, a fellow Gilmore Girls fan. Within days, a copy arrived at my door. (She's Lane and Sookie rolled into one. She rocks!) This is simply a take on Goodnight, Moon but set at night in Stars Hollow. (It can't be too late, though; all of Miss Patty's ballerina's are still awake and dancing down the street in their tutus.) Lorelei is walking through most of the scenes, though we do see Rory at the bookstore with Jess.
What I most loved was that so many GG characters appear, from Babette and Morey (and their cat, though it's not clear whether it's Cinnamon or Apricot), to Perry Como (the dog), to the troubadour strumming at the gazebo and Gypsy (asleep, under a car she's repairing). Dean is stocking corn starch (ha! IYKYK) seen by Lane in the marching band, walking past Doose's Market's window. Michel is smiling while on the telephone (of which, more later) with Sookie and Jackson (wearing his beanie and carrying his vegetable box) in the background at the Dragonfly Inn.
Later, Lane makes a re-appearance, still in her band uniform, playing the drums while Sophie (Carol King) is reaching for the light switch, and there's even a cameo by Antonioli's world's biggest pizza pie, held aloft by an unseen crane.
Kirk is asleep on the couch at the cinema (which I never realized was inside the Black-White-rEad Bookstore, and Mrs. Kim is amid the antiques, grimacing at her watch (obviously, because Lane is at Sophie's!). Taylor is closing up the Soda Shoppe and Lorelai is now exiting Weston's Bakery (which I'm betting in real life would have closed by 6 p.m.).
At this point, Lorelei and Perry Como have circled back to where they started, passing the gazebo in the town square and looking in on Luke and Jess in Luke's. Jess is reading; Luke is wiping a table. Finally, with snow (can you smell it?), we're left with a GG-lover's delightful final stanza over a shot of Perry Como asleep in a chair, Lorelei in bed upstairs (why does her clock say 6:05?) and Rory asleep in bed with a book open on her stomach. The last page reads:
Goodnight, Gilmore house, with its chuppah and Jeep And goodnight, Gilmore Girls, no more words, time to sleep.
I love the deep cuts, the sweet stanzas, and the inclusion of so many loving touches.
Do the drawings look like we could be in Stars Hollow? Absolutely. Do the drawn characters look anything like the actual people? Not at all; the clothing and accessories are perfect, so you know you are seeing Morey or Michel (but c'mon, Michel smiling on the phone?). But from the town sign to the twinkle lights, there's such a charm to this book that I'm finding I read it before bed each night.
If you've got a Gilmore Girls fan in your life, this is a delightful book to share.
I do love a good kids book but I wasn’t taken by this one, I’m a real big Gilmore girls fan and it didn’t have the charm, any sort of story and the illustrations seemed bland. At first I thought maybe it was written by AI
A soothing, sweet goodnight book about Stars Hollow and its residents. Say goodnight to Doose’s Market, Gilmore House and more as you tour the town with Rory and her friends. Perfect for any Gilmore fan or fan-to-be!
This book is gorgeous. I bought a copy. I love Kirk's movie house and the hs band. The only discrepancies are: Paul Anka looks like an English Sheep Dog not a Polish Sheep Dog, and Jess would not be smiling while he reads at Luke's.
