I adored Cohen, how he fully opened his heart, raw and exposed, honest and vulnerable, willing to go all in with Raia. He had been looking for a connection, to feel a spark, wanting more than the moment. What would happen when Cohen and Raia's fake relationship started to feel real? Could they have something more? Could they have a future together?
Independent and determined, Raia was scarred by hurt and betrayal, holding back based on fear, fear of what could happen if she allowed herself to fall for Cohen. I couldn't warm up to Raia, her actions often at odds with her personality. She lost all her confidence as she faltered in Avery's shadow, always in competition with her brother. And the way she behaved at Thanksgiving was just so incredibly immature and uncalled for even though her ex deserved worse for what he had done.
"If I allow myself to fall fully for Cohen, will he be there to catch me? If I let him all the way in, will he eventually break my heart?"
The progression of Cohen and Raia's relationship didn't feel natural and organic to me and so it was difficult to invest myself in their relationship. Raia frustrated me but I still hoped she wouldn't break Cohen's heart. I also wanted the snowstorm issue to be further developed since it seemed to end almost as quickly as it began.
The brother's best friend aspect was written well, the conflict with Avery and the way everyone handled it. I loved seeing Avery again even after he hurt Mila in Hot Shot's Mistake and I think he finally deserves his chance at redemption in this series.
Family dynamics and friendships played a significant role in this book and I loved the connections between Raia and her parents as well as the bond between Cohen and his brother. Ultimately, this was a story about finding your person, finding your home, feeling like you belong.
"She tastes like hazelnut and snowflakes. She feels like home."
I've been anticipating Cohen getting his story since first meeting him in Hot Shot's Mistake. Unfortunately, that might be part of the problem, the way I built him up in my thoughts. I'll still read anything Gina writes even though this one was a miss for me. Other readers, however, may enjoy this more, especially those who are fans of the listed tropes.
