When Lord Richard Balfour, the fourth Earl of Saunton, is dumped by Annabel when caught messing with her maid, he has the audacity to be angry for the inconvenience of now needing to have to once more look for a bride. He had already considered Sophia Hayward to be vapid and boring. But when he inadvertently overhears her and her cousin discussing his poor manners and behavior, he decides he needs to change his ways to once more become an honorable man and no longer an annoying rake. With that goal in mind, Sophia would probably be the best one to work with him on these personal changes. So he proposes to her! The proposal becomes a timely rescue since Sophia discovers her brother wants the money coming to her from a sizable dowry and plots to force her into an unwanted marriage with his friend to get that money… which may lead to Sophia’s early demise if that suits their plans. And Richard’s willingness and determination to redeem himself and accept responsibility for his actions impresses her, so she accepts his proposal, not aware that danger may continue to be an issue even after their marriage. Will the two of them find true love in their marriage and Richard’s redemption? And will Sophia get justice for herself against the person who had been torturing her for years, and who was now disguising himself as a groom? Her tackling her disgusting, disreputable, disguised brother to the ground, even when he punched her in the face, will have the reader jumping up and cheering for her bravery and determination when she wouldn’t let him escape! This is an inspiring book that you definitely won’t want to miss!
Very much enjoyed this second in a series Regency. Miss Sophia Hayward is in her fourth Season (and hopefully last) after successfully fending off fortune hunters with either too dumb or too smart commentary during dances. Philip, Earl of Staunton, overhears her talking to her cousin and realizes her flibbertigibbet demeanor is an act. Marriage, misunderstandings, danger and eventual true love are in the cards.
I received this ARC at no charge from BookSirens and the author, but all opinions are my own.
C.N. Jarrett | Miss Hayward and the Earl Dazzling Debutantes #2
ITA 1820. ENG 1820. Lord Richard Balfour, 4th Earl of Saunton, is looking for a wife. The girl he dances with, Sophia Hayward, is pretty but not bright. After the dance, Sophia and her cousin Lily retire to a balcony. For years, Sophia has had a foolproof method of discouraging suitors: she plays the intellectual or the shallow, depending on the situation. On the balcony, she rants about Lord Richard, unaware that he is listening. Lord Richard, like Paul on the road to Damascus, has an epiphany through Sophia's words: he is becoming exactly like the father he so hated. With the help of his trusted assistants, he decides to make a list of women to whom he will apologize and make amends. And he returns the favour to Sophia. Sophia, who has lived with her aunt and uncle since childhood, has a dissolute brother, Cecil. During a party, Cecil discovers that his mother has left her a substantial inheritance. In need of money, Cecil plans to marry Sophia off to a slimy character. To protect herself, Sophia decides to marry Lord Richard. The story revolves around the two main characters, Sophia and Richard. However, neither of them is particularly outstanding, for my taste. Sophia is an intelligent girl who can easily read people and situations, but she gets paranoid when Richard hides something from her. Richard, handsome, “well-behaved”, wealthy and lustful, is incapable of love. He decides to redeem himself because Sophia has hit a nerve. While the characters are not particularly memorable, the story is interesting because of the family intrigue that enriches it. The interactions between Sophia and Richard, while well developed, offer nothing particularly innovative. However, it is the family and social context that makes the plot compelling. Cecil's plan to exploit his sister and his mother's inheritance, for example, introduces elements of tension and suspense that keep the reader engaged. I have very mixed feelings with this story. Some ridiculous yet some realism in the plot.
The wicked brother seemed too wicked and when you first hear about him he didn't seem awful. The fact that the heroine never suspected her brother seemed a little dumb, for someone who is supposed to be very smart and observant. The strange footmen, that she didn't confirm if they were legit until days later. The 4 year old was too genius. A 4 year old illegitimate son of a maid (with no support from his father) learning to read fluently, playing chess, was too far fetched. In addition there was no reason too make him a genius for the plot. The path too redemption: why did he have maids brought too his London home too apologize??? Without them knowing why he is having them brought to him... They would think he still had an interest in him and doing so could easily jeopardize their positions. A well written apology (if they didn't read, read to by his servant sent to them) and his servants with sufficient funds too help them as needed. Or if he wanted to meet them, he should have traveled to them, but back in those days I don't think anyone would have done what he supposedly did. Reparations yes, but bringing past affairs to their home, no. Then immediately ripping his assumed 4 year old son from his Loving home. The 4 year old not batting. an eye, nor did his family require meeting the supposed father and slowly working him into the family. The boy seemed to only miss one person.
I almost stopped reading the book when the H was at the musicale and the 2 women were there that he had had affairs with. It was just too much. He hadn't seen them in years and suddenly they were there. The widow who he broke off many years previous, acting like he was her current flirt. I thought oh no, what craziness now! Anyway I decided to continue reading and those 2 women were just introduced for use later on the story.
Other areas I felt were realistic: The h and H didn't have very many misunderstandings. They mostly communicated well. The quality of writing is fairly good, though sometimes reiterating emotions too frequently.
The writer has a lot of promise, but I feel could improve in making things more realistic consistently. Though I imagine plots can be hard to make up.
Not having read the first book in the series, I was nevertheless very much up to date what it was about. The story of “Miss Hayward and the Earl” was watered down by unnecessary repetitions, explanations of the trivial, countless thoughts about one fact or the other and multiple repetitions of the plotline of the first book. So, yes, I would say, the book is about 150 pages too long. Thus, the story, which did have some suspense moments, dragged a lot in the extended middle of the book. The sudden appearance of a genius 4-years-old (yes, he prepared the plot for book 3, but still- too much, too unbelievable) didn’t help. Moreover, it supported the very rushed timeline of the story. The whole thing with emotional developments and relationship building between multiple characters and across several plotlines happened over a very short timeframe. While it might drive the pace of the story, it also makes it hardly believable. Also, being announced as a clean romance, the accordant descriptions feel as if the author would regret this self-imposed limitation (or were the steamy bits just removed?).
The redemption path was kind of hard to comprehend: why invite all the past paramours? To make them feel awkward? To uproot them from their new circumstances? To remind them of their place? Rather strange, selfish and unnecessary (not to mention unrealistic- he is supposed to be a good manager of the estates and tenants. How do these two behavioral streams align?).
The heroine is described as witty, tough, clever and observant. But after the scene in the drawing room involving the uncle, all these traits seem to vanish. She even says so herself (paraphrasing: “being a watering pot is not the normal state of affairs”). So, why? A capable heroine from start to finish is a good read and she also can have a “protector” without having a meltdown in every chapter. Or is it a means to show that she has to cope with the speed of events?
Closing your eyes to the rushed unfolding of events as well as several points which make the story hardly believable, it is a quiet read with a bit of suspense mixed in.

I already knew the steamy version of the book and it was fun to re-read Richard and Sophia’s stranger to lovers, marriage of convenience story in this new g-rated realisation. The two are my all-time favorite characters in the original series! The very well written plot is captivating, emotive and humorous with a touch of intrigue and kept hooked me from the beginning. I loved Richard’s character development throughout the book, especially his path of redemption and I really pitied him and had to laugh aloud at the same time for all ongoing mishaps he had to face. Sophia is also very likable and I loved her determination, understanding and support.
When Richard is being dumped by his fiancee Annabel due to his tryst with her maid, he is angry and disappointed because he has to reenter the marriage mart in search for another bride. Incidently he overhears a conversation between Sophia Hayward and her cousin who critizise his libertine manners, and he starts to feel appalled by himself, his reckless behavior and rakish pursuits in the past. Resolved to change his ways and certain that Sophia is the one capable of helping him on his path of redemption, he proposes to her. Sophia never wanted to marry but when she finds out that her brother and his friend plan to force her to into marriage to said friend, she decides to accept Richard‘s proposal. She is intrigued by his determination to redeem his past…
If you like heartwarming sweet and clean historical romance novels that are filled with emotion, humor, twists and a touch of suspense, you are sure to enjoy this book!

The old adage about never hearing anything good about yourself when eavesdropping was certainly true for Richard Balfour, Earl of Staunton.
He stepped out of the ballroom to smoke and overheard a conversation between the insipid miss he had been dancing with and her cousin. Except Sophie Hayward was now witty and insightful. He was amused and interested. Then her cousin asked about him. He waited and was chagrined to be called a wastrel and she had no time for the likes of him.
It was a turning point for Richard, who was ashamed of the person he had become, a man like his detested and detestable father.
The adage applied differently when Sophia, hiding in the library during a ball, overhears her brother and notorious Lord Leech plotting to abduct her for inheritance. It obviously wasn’t good, but it allowed her to protect herself from their scheme—and led to her marriage to Richard.
Marital bliss was tempered by the arrival of Richard’s 4-year-old son from a pre-marital liaison and by a concerted campaign by someone who hated either Richard or Sophia to drive a wedge between the two.
I hadn’t cared for Richard in Miss Ridley and the Duke, the first book in this series. But Reformed Richard is a knight is mostly shining armor. Sophia is a wonderful woman with intelligence, courage and a huge heart.
This book can standalone, but of course, reading the first book in the series is a plus.

Miss Hayward and the Earl is a sweet and charming Regency romance by CN Jarrett. This is the second book of the Dazzling Debutantes series but can be read as a standalone - I did just that and only looked up the first book after finishing this one. It's pretty low on heat, but the chemistry between the main characters is palpable without them getting hot and heavy.
This a book that is based around the redemption of a rogue.
Sophia, the titular Miss Hayward, makes an instant impression on Lord Richard, the Earl of Saunton. So much so, that Richard begins to take stock of his previously hedonistic ways and works to improve himself - not just for Sophia but for himself.
I really loved and got lost in Richard's redemption arc, for this reason he had deeper character development through the book than Sophia. However, his story is so interesting that I didn't care. Richard had an inkling that he wanted and needed to improve himself but meeting Sophia set off a trigger inside and he was ready to do what he needed to be worthy of Sophia and her love. It really was a journey of self discovery.
This was a sweet ending, especially as Sophia aided and supported Richard into becoming a better man and doing the right thing - because his actions had consequences.
I'm really intrigued about meeting Emma in the next book and learning more about her.

It is so rewarding when an unrepentant rake has an epiphany and changes his destructive ways. Richard, the Earl of Saunton, overheard two women talking on the balcony at a ball he attended, and that conversation changed his life. Determined to make up for his past disgressions, Richard began seeking women he had previously seduced in order to make amends. Sophia Hayward was one of the women he had overheard, and intrigued by her observations and forthrightness, Richard was determined to court her. When Sophia inadvertantly heard her brother and his acquaintance discussing a plot to rob her of her freedom and inheritance, she agreed to marry Richard in a bid to thwart their plans. Little did she know that danger and threats were to follow them into their marriage. This is a story where eavesdropping actually saved two people’s lives. There is a delightful chemistry between Sophia and Richard which leads to an eagerness to support each other in their everyday lives. Ethan is a wonderful surprise and although his presence could have destroyed their relationship, Sophia made sure that did not happen. This is a story about relationships, atonement and forgiveness. It is well written, attention grabbing and filled with emotion evoking subtleties. Most enjoyable!.

Easygoing story, nothing too surprising. The male main character is a reformed rake, trying to make amends after overhearing a comment by the female main character. The heroine initially doesn’t want to get married but he convinces her he’s changed. Then the couple gets hit with various attacks on their reputation, but neither character speaks to the other one about their doubts and fears, so it takes them forever find out who the culprit is. As a reader I got a bit exasperated with the lack of communication, especially since the heroine is so clever and doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind. Also the hero came clean to her about his past, so why not confide in her about the threats? Since the entire story evolves around this, I found the pace a bit lacking. And personally, I didn’t like the addition of a four year old son, but that’s me. And why not sending someone to pick up this Emma character as a tutor for Ethan? Kudos for the writer to keep this a clean story and let the one passionate scene to the imagination of the reader. I also liked that the hero was genuine in wanting to turn his life around, and the heroine for being well-read and clever. I just had expected better communication and maybe a bit more banter and character building. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I enjoyed this story very much! This is the story of Sophia and Richard. Sophia's parents died when she was young and she went to live with her Aunt and Uncle. They are very loving and have made her feel a part of their family. Her half-bother on the other hand has been cruel to Sophia over the years and he is plotting to take part of her large dowry by having her kidnapped and married to someone he owes money to. Richard has grown up to be a rake. When he overhears Sophia talking about his rakish ways he finally realizes he has grown up to be just like his father and that he has be guilty of mistreating women over the years, including his former fiancee. Sophia never planned to marry and Richard wants to mend his ways so they come to an understanding. They decide to marry and this begins an adventure which includes scandal, illegitimate children; rumors; angry husbands, and love. I enjoyed the Jarrett was able to bring this couple together when so many obstacles stood in their way. I also enjoyed the way she developed each character and showed the growth each one experienced in their marriage and relationship.

When Sophia Hayward and Lord Richard Balfour, the Earl of Saunton, meet, he finds her empty-headed but beautiful. It is only when he overhears her talking that he realises that she is not what he had thought. She also discloses her honest opinion of him, which is not at all flattering. Yet Miss Hayward’s sharp observations strike a chord with Richard, and he desires to become a better man. Earning Sophia’s regard is essential, but he needs to prove himself worthy if they are to have any future together. Sophia had carefully planned a future free of marriage, managing her reputation and dowry with precision. Yet, when she overhears a scheme to force her into a hasty elopement, she realises she must reconsider Richard’s offer of courtship. He may not be the man she dreamed of—but he may be the only one willing to protect her from a most dangerous match. A captivating romance between two likeable characters. Richard’s determination to reform was endearing, as was his desire to have Sophia help him in his efforts. Sophia is definitely plucky, and I enjoyed seeing her change in her feelings towards Richard. An engaging read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is an interesting Regency romance that takes a deep dive into a story about a rake amending his ways. Richard Balfour has been pretty bad in the past. In the previous book, he lost a fiancée that he loved when she caught him dallying with a servant. In this book, he decides to change his ways and make amends to all the women he has wronged, and there are quite a few. In the meantime, Sophia Hayward, who doesn’t want to marry and has a large dowry, discovers a plot to kidnap her to Gretna Green. Fortunately, she and Richard discover a real attraction to each other, and so the problems begin. He has to tell her of his past (it’s already known through gossip), and he has to somehow prove he has changed. She is desperate not to be forced into a hideous and dangerous marriage, and she doesn’t want him to know that.
The story has some dramatic and surprising twists and turns, and Jarrett does a good job of turning Richard back into a likable character who is truly trying to change. It has some great romance as well!

Sophia is expected to marry and this is her 4th season and will be considered to be unsuitable if she does not accept a proposal soon but she wants to marry for love and not a forced acceptable marriage. Lord Richard Balfour who is the Earl of Saunton is titled with a reputation for chasing the ladies and maids. He asks Sophia to dance, which she is obliged to do so, and later overhears her talking to her cousin about him and he does not like what he hears and decides to reform himself and put the past right.
Richard is interested in Sophia but has to make himself worthy of her and sets about to rectify his past mistakes and is shocked when he stops to consider his previous actions. Can he put the past to rights and can he convince Sophia he is a reformed character. It is easy, humorous and clean reading and Richard is a cad. Is he serious about reforming himself and it is worth it?
Richard Balfour, Earl of Saunton, is the consummate rake. Having lost his potential bride to his cousin the Duke of Halmesbury, he is again looking for a wife. The insipid debutantes he has found at balls are not what he wants. Miss Sophia Hayward appears to be one of those debutantes. Sophia does not wish to marry, so she puts an act to put potential suitors off. Richard changes his mind about Sophia when he hears her talk about the cad he is. Shocked at her description of him, he decides two things. He will change his ways, and he will woo Sophia. When she discovers that there is a plot afoot to force her to marry a horrid man for her dowry, she agrees to marry Richard for protection. How will their union work out? This is an entertaining book with likeable characters (except the villains, of course). There is a lot of humor, a rather dangerous mystery, a twist and turn or two, and a happy ending. I received a copy of this book via BookSirens and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This is the second book in the Dazzling Debutantes series, and it focuses on Sophia Hayward and Richard Balfour, the fourth Earl of Staunton. In the previous book, Richard was a rake and following some feedback received, decides to reform his ways. At the same time, he feels it is time that he took a wife and decides to focus his attention on Sophia. She at first is reticent given his previous behaviour but on closer inspection, she sees the changes he is determined to make and is more receptive to his suit. While this story can be read as a standalone novel, it would be nicer and make more sense if you read the earlier book as it has crossover characters from the other book, and I am sure the next will be the same.
Sweet romance that was beautifully written and had some interesting characters. I received an ARC from the publishers and Booksprout and submit my honest review voluntarily.
well written, full of drama, love, action, villains, society, family, friends, mystery, intrigue, suspense, emotions and secrets. Lord Richard is an Earl who we met once before in another story. He has decide he needs to marry and have an heir as his brother does not want the Earldom. He meets Sofia at a ball but finds her to be an empty and not who he wants. He then overhears Sophia speaking with her cousin about him. Shocked of what she said, he decides to see what she really is like. Sofia is trying hard not to marry and be able to do as she pleases. Add in her abusive brother who wants her money. After she and Richard marry lots of things go wrong from rumors start, angry men show up threatening violence and much more. A fabulous group of characters both new and old friends in this story. Curl up and enjoy this story, you may lose some sleep over it as you will not want to put it down. Would recommend to everyone.
I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
Miss Sophia Hayward isn't interested in marriage, even if it's her fourth season. Richard, the Earl of Staunton, decides to overturn his life after hearing her comments on his behavior. He wants a wife and making restitution is his plan, even if it is embarrassing. If he can convince Sophia of his sincerity, he seeks her permission for courting. Once Richard states his intentions, she agrees, but it soon becomes necessary for her to have a protector, a husband. It's a quick marriage, but it doesn't bother Richard, but someone is trying to sabotage their marriage with scandalous plots and cartoons in the gossip papers. Sophia must convince Richard they can overcome any problem together. Lives are threatened and the mysterious identity of the culprit is unknown, until she makes a heartbreaking discovery. A very nice romance with a few twists and turns and an earl who finds the perfect wife. Closed bedroom door. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
So fun to see the dastardly rogue, Richard, from the first book in this series decide to reform and make reparations for his past misdeeds. Sophia quickly changes her mind about not marrying when she discovers her despicable half brother intends to have her kidnapped and forced into marriage. I was surprised she didn’t suspect him of all the troubles they face in the first weeks of their marriage. She is amazingly forgiving and supportive of her husband’s desires to reform, and together they learn to trust each other as they face the trials and dangers forced upon them. It was particularly heartwarming to see Richard realize the importance of family. This romance is a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first one before you read this one as I especially enjoyed seeing the characters from the first book play a part in this one. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story is about Sophia Hayward and Richard Balfour, the fourth Earl of Saunton. We first met Richard in the first book in the Dazzling Debutantes series, Miss Ridley and Her Duke, which is also well worth a read. Richard has finally seen the error of his ways and is now fast becoming a ‘reformed rake’. With the help of Sophia he puts some of his past wrongs right while addressing some new issues that affect them both.
While it’s not essential to have read the first book in this series, I would recommend you do as not only is it another enjoyable read, it also introduces you to some characters in this book whose background stories have a bearing on this story.
This is a good, well written story with some interesting characters and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I always appreciate books that feature the antagonist from the first installment undergoing a redemption arc in the second, ultimately emerging as the protagonist. Sophia proved to be his ideal match, drawing out his genuine nature. Through his journey, he was able to transform his past self and make amends with those he had harmed. The narrative is peppered with unexpected twists, including a mystery surrounding the identity of the individual seeking to destroy his family. He will stop at nothing to protect them. Sophia's strength and wit were impressive, often eliciting laughter. While she refused to tolerate his past transgressions, she assisted him in obtaining forgiveness from those he had hurt. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in the series, expecting it to surpass the preceding one. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am providing my review voluntarily.
Miss Hayward and the Earl was a charming, sweet, beautiful romance. This book was the second book by C . N. Jarrett, and it was definitely my favorite book by her so far. The story line was engaging, and the characters were lovely and charming. The romance was sweet but a little rushed in my opinion. I loved the fact that we got to see Richard's redemption after meeting him in Miss Ridley and the Duke, where we only saw his bad side and his unwillingness to change. I felt that the characters' problems and conflicts were very relatable and real. I definitely recommend Miss Hayward and the Earl to anyone wanting a fun, quick, sweet romance read that deals with redemption and the power allowing others in.

This is Book 2 of the Dazzling Debutantes series, written by C. N. Jarrett. This is the story of Sophia Hayward, Lord Richard Balfour the Earl of Saunton, and Richard's four year old son, Ethan. Richard overheard Sophia talking to her cousin Lily about what a reprobate Richard is. After hearing this, he becomes a changed man, making amends to several former young women he ruined. He and Sophia each have skeletons in their pasts. One of them is out to ruin Richard and Sophia, even threatening Sophia and little Ethan's lives. I really loved this book. I've read books 1-4 and next I will read book 5. I appreciate reading an excellent Regency love story that has no vulgar language or openly compromising sexual language. I gave this book 5 stars. I received an advanced reader's copy through BookSirens.
I read the spicy version of this story some time ago and, knowing that I had enjoyed it, was interested to read the clean version. I wasn't disappointed. The flaws, vulnerabilities and strengths of the main characters come across well and make sense in the context of their backgrounds. I found that I had forgotten quite a lot of the events as it is a relatively complex story with diversions, misunderstandings and the final twist is well disguised and very satisfying. C N Jarrett underlays her romances with difficult issues, but manages to cover something different in each book, in this case restorative justice and redemption. She also has the skill of writing a series, but each book is stand alone and readable without having read the previous ones.

Does a reformed rake make a good husband? Sophia is an opinionated debutante, who does not want to marry. To avoid that fate, she appears to some gentlemen as an insipid, empty-headed miss, while to some others, she appears as the consummate bluestocking. One night at the ball, she confides to a friend the low opinion she has about Lord Richard Balfour, a dissolute rake, without realizing that he hears everything she has to say. Shamed by her scathing opinion, he decides to redeem himself and to court her properly. After an attempt by her reprobate brother to marry her to one of his cronies to get his hands on at least a part of her dowry, she agrees to marry the barely reformed Richard. This was a very enjoyable read. There were several inspirational moments like Richard's efforts to make amends and make life changes. I thought it was admirable that Richard would take in Ethan and raise him. I look forward to seeing him in the next book and his connection to Emma. All Richard's good deeds seemed charitable and generous of heart. The danger from a close source was very concerning. The caricatures were a snide form of ridicule. I was shocked at the perpetrator. Richard was a man of integrity and strength of character which I was happy to see come to fruition. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
Loved this book. It is the second book in the series and I thought it was just as good as the first book. They each have a HEA ending but they character's do relate to each other, so I would suggest reading them in order. I enjoyed the redemption and forgiveness portrayed in this story and throughout the series. The female character's are strong independent women and know how to stand for themselves. I encourage anyone who likes clean, but swoony historical romance to read this series. They are easy light reads. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Miss Heywood & the Earl is Book 2 in the Dazzling Debutantes Series by C N Jarrett. In book 1, the Earl, Richard, was a rake. Book 2 finds the rakeish Earl deciding he needs a wife and he has set his eyes on Sophia. I really enjoyed this book. Sophia's brother, Cecil, is not a nice man. I found the characters to be very well written and there are problems that must be overcome and I felt this makes the story more interesting. I believe that this Regency romance series is fantastic! It’s a wonderful story and I loved watching Sophia discourage possible suitors. Unfortunately danger causes her to change her train of thought and accept Richard’s attentions. The story is a fun read that brings some interesting characters to this story and Ethan was a great addition. The story is well written and has cross over characters from previous stories. It’s an enjoyable read that has a lot of action with the presence of danger. I received a free copy of this book via Booksirens and are voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed this sweet story. The heroine seeks security as she overheard a plot to kidnapped her into a marriage. The hero is overhears some plain truths that send him on a mission to redeem his reputation. When they met he is smitten, but she is a little reluctant until he promises he is reforming. She steps up to help him as she is very patient and understanding. It was a good read with a little suspense as someone is trying to upset their marriage.
