Crispin catches sight of the beautiful Miss Georgiana Byng and has to meet her. When he discovers she also has a brilliant, scholarly mind, he decides he must marry her.
And Crispin Stafford, Earl of Epworth, always gets what he wants.
Georgiana cares for nothing except Anglo-Saxon runes. Until she meets an enormous—and enormously attractive—man named Crispin. Who—gulp!—looks just like her idea of the hero Beowulf. Suddenly, she cares a great deal about the fun she and Crispin might get up to in the British Museum.
Be Not Coy is a prequel short story for the steamy Regency romance novella Voluptuous and is set in the universe of The Bed Me Books.

Felicity Niven is a hopeful romantic. Writing Regency romance is her third career after two degrees from Harvard. And you know what they say about third things? Yep, it’s a charm. She splits her time between the temperate South in the winter and the cool Great Lakes in the summer and thinks there can be no greater comforts than a pot of soup on the stove, a set of clean sheets on the bed, and a Jimmy Stewart film on a screen in the living room.
A quiet interlude in a library turns to a match made in heaven. Crispin is used to getting what he wants, and Georgiana is no exception. Determination pays off, with a little help from a promising library. Who can say no when he offers her books? This story is short, sweet and oh,so fun! Ending in a fit of giggles. What could be better?!
This is a delicious amuse-bouche, meet-cute short story of the mother and father of the Henrietta the MFC in Voluptuous. It features the Voluptuous MMC Oliver first meeting as well with Crispin, the future Duke of Bexton. Can be read before reading Voluptuous
~ Georgiana & Crispin ~ She’s the deliciously plump daughter of a viscount, fascinated by ancient Anglo-Saxon texts - so fascinated in fact, she dresses up as boy and sneaks into the British Museum’s reading room. He’s a tall redheaded mountain of a man, a viking, heir to a dukedom and determined to conquer the lush rolling hills of Georgiana - one look was all it took to know she was his destiny.
The perfect whirlwind romance, this novelette is pure swoony charm. It’s small, deliciously funny and I love it to bits!
It's impressive how much autistic flirtation Niven crams into such a short story. Georgiana and Crispin are so cute! I kind of wish there were a longer book about them, but I suspect their romance went so smoothly there wouldn't be enough conflict for a longer story.
You don't need to read this before reading VOLUPTUOUS, but it's cute and fun.
Very cute short story about Crispin (who is really of the Bertie Trent Brain Box school of thinkers) falling in love with scholarly odd duck Georgiana and just loving the heck out of her and supporting her interests (including his library, which he is happy to use as a selling point on the marriage), and being in awe of her in general. As we see in the novella Voluptuous this dynamic carries on throughout their long, happy marriage.
This is also where Crispin gets reacquainted with his classmate Oliver and they become besties. Oliver and Crispin & Georgiana's daughter Henrietta are the main characters in Voluptuous, so you can see how things could get awkward (the novella is fantastic).
This was a lovely bonus story featuring the romance of the heroine’s parents from Voluptuous. It was super cute and kinda bonkers.
But mostly, it allowed me to read two Felicity Niven books back-to-back (Voluptuous and this one) and reminded me why I love this author so much: ✨ because the personalities of the MCs have such an impact on the tone, the plot, and the atmosphere of the whole book. Voluptuous’s characters were emotional and awkward—and the whole book was emotional and awkward. Her parents were big-hearted and impulsive. And that’s exactly how this book *felt*
I’m obsessed. And bonus points for a heroine who dresses as a boy to do research on Anglo-Saxon history in a museum reading room.
Crispin wants to meet Georgiana as she visits the British Museum reading rooms. Georgiana is impersonating her brother to get in. Does Crispin get what he wants? Does Georgiana?
While this is a short story, it is full of action. Crispin does not let any grass grow under his feet meeting Georgiana. Georgiana lets Crispin know she is not averse to his advances. She surprises him. I enjoyed both characters. Both are forthright in their intentions.
This is the prequel to VOLUPTUOUS which is about their daughter and Crispin's best friend. I look forward to reading this.
A short story and prequel to Voluptuous on how Henrietta’s parents meet and the starting of a friendship between the Stanfords and Oliver.
It’s sweet and fast paced and sets up Voluptuous well in showing how loving of a life Henrietta is raised in. It’s also an interesting glimpse into Oliver prior to any of his marriages.
Short and sweet (spicy?) prequel short story for “Voluptuous” that has now unlocked a hidden desire to make out in a manuscript room at the British Museum. The insta-love story really works in this short format, especially once she learns that he’s the heir to a massive library (what any girl wants, really) and it makes me excited to revisit all these characters in “Voluptuous” next!
We adore a heroine who is not only knowledgeable but genius level of gifted, and the hero has the physique of a God... A wonderful novella & the steam was absolutely spot on. Another wonderful book by Felicity.
This was hilarious and cute. The Old English riddle was an excellent ending! The one thing I thought was strange was the heroine’s use of ancient exclamations. (And this is coming from me as a person who regularly uses outdated words and is a medievalist who also studied Old English. Lol)
A quick fun read which is quite insta-lovey but not objectionable in the least. If you're looking for a book to get you to your yearly goal and want to have a little shmexy fun, this book is a good option.
When Felicity listed this on Amazon, did I immediately buy it and reread it just so I could count it towards my reading goal (and in anticipation of beginning Voluptuous)? Yes. Yes, I did. Although this is super short and sweet, it was so much fun. I didn’t want it to end and I could’ve definitely read a whole novel about Crispin and Georgiana. Crispin is a man obsessed and I’m so here for it.
