TW// murder of a mother (visual depiction)
I have to admit that this was mostly a cover buy, but I do think the synopsis had a lot of potential. I knew pretty quickly that this manga wouldn’t work for me though. My biggest issues with Arcana can be boiled down to the artwork and the confusion I felt while reading the story.
The artwork was not my cup of tea. It had very elongated faces that I haven’t seen in manga before and I wasn’t a fan of how the lips were drawn. This is definitely a personal preference, so I’m sure some people will enjoy the artwork of this manga. However, the art isn’t like the cover of this volume so don’t let the cover fool you into thinking the artwork for this series is amazing.
I would be less annoyed with how confusing this story was if the plot actually progressed to something exciting. However, at the end of this volume nothing made sense and I couldn’t even understand what this series is about. There’s obviously a girl who’s a chosen one, but beyond that I couldn’t make out anything else important in the plot. There were so many things in this volume that had me scratching my head out of pure confusion.
I own volume two of this series, so I will be continuing with it, but unless volume two takes a complete 180 to change the series in a better direction, I’m probably not going to read this entire series.

I gave So-Young Lee a second chance with this one, but was left even more disappointed. This was even harder to keep up with than 'Model' and they never put out the last book. UGH! Oh well... I still love the unique drawing style.

The artwork is somewhat weird but the story of the ordinary girl destined to save the world was interesting enough for me to order the second volume.

The first thing I noticed about this series was the somewhat old school illustrations, where the men seem prettier than the women. Although I wasn't a fan of the graphics right off, I felt myself getting used to is as I read on. I can't seem to resist a high fantasy when it comes to manga. I love the aspect of Inez being able to communicate with animals, especially her loving dog who is more than what he seems.
The sense of adventure excites me for future volumes of this book. I know that Inez has quite some growing to do as a character. She's still a bit naive and although she is perceptive, she says whatever comes to her without heed of who she is talking to. We'll see how she turns out as the manga series progresses.
Final Verdict: An interesting start to a new series that has a lot of promise. I'm a little iffy on the graphics, but already am getting used to .

Ich hatte diesen Manga durch Zufall auf der Straße gefunden und nachdem ich es durch gelesen hatte, kann ich nur sagen das es kein Wunder ist, dass es dort liegen gelassen wurde.
Der Zeichenstil sah oft aus, als wenn jemand Kopf und Körper völlig separat geschnitzt und dann einfach drauf gesetzt hätte ohne zu sehen ob es passt. Das Mädchen (ihren Namen hatte ich schon beim Lesen dauernd vergessen) welche die Hauptfigur spielt ist scheinbar bereits 15 Jahre alt aber sie hat keinerlei sekundäre Geschlechtsmerkmale obwohl sie scheinbar nicht schlecht genährt und schon fast so groß wie einige der erwachsenen Frauen dort ist.
Auch die Geschichte ist nicht besonders gut, sicher die Interaktion zwischen dem Mädchen und dem Hund Surdo ist ganz nett aber die Dialoge und Szenenwechsel sind furchtbar. Man ist plötzlich woanders und man hat keine Ahnung wo und warum. Wenigstens eine Ortsangabe wäre nett.
Und genau wie man einfach hin und her springt so geschehen Dinge hier einfach, z.B. sind zwei Typen deren Namen ich schon wieder vergessen habe in irgendeinem Tempel, wegen… keine Ahnung. Auch dass die Hauptfigur einfach weiß, dass der Vogel den der Kaiser getötet hat der einzige ist der ihn noch geliebt hat ist nie erklärt worden, nicht mal Hinweise auf eine Erklärung gab es. Das passiert hier andauern und ich habe keine Ahnung was wirklich los ist, außer "Dämonen tauchen auf" oder so. Da ist auch was über einen "Krieg des schwarzen Blutes" und Drachen aber ich habe keine Ahnung was das alles soll. Es ist so wirr und so ohne jegliche Spannung und Emotion dass mir wirklich egal war was passierte, z.B. war das Mädchen scheinbar die ganze Zeit vergiftet, ohne irgendwelche Symptome zu zeigen, und der Hund starb weil er es aus hier heraussaugte; und mir war das völlig gleichgültig. Der Hund war auch noch ein Mann und heißt eigentlich Seir und ist von einem anderen Clan. Das Mädchen soll auch noch mit einem Drachen sprechen und es wird wohl Krieg geben, dann war da noch eine Riesenschlange (dass das plötzlich aufgetauchte Mädchen in dem auffälligen Kleid mit ihr verbunden war, war ungefähr so überraschend wie das Aufgehen der Sonne) und es war als wollten sie alles Mögliche in die Geschichte hineinschmeißen. Was der Geschichte in keiner Weise gut getan hat aus meiner Sicht. Und letzten Endes tut sie was der Kaiser verlangt weil sie plötzlich wissen will wer sie ist und wieso sie mit Tieren sprechen kann, womit sie vorher niemals Probleme hatte. Vielleicht sollte all das was in diesen Manga geschmissen wurde Tiefe zeigen aber wenn ja hat es bei mir nicht funktioniert. Nicht einmal annähernd. Und hätte ich diese Rezension nicht geschrieben, hätte ich bestimmt längst vergessen, dass dieser Manga überhaupt existiert.

I found this manga by chance on the street, and after I read it, I can only say that it is no wonder that it was left lying there.
The drawing style often looked as if someone had carved head and body completely separate and then simply stuck them together without checking whether it fits. The girl (her name I had forgotten constantly while reading already) who is the protagonist is apparently already 15 years old but she has no secondary sexual characteristics, but she is apparently not badly fed and almost as big as some of the adult women there.
The story is not very good, certainly the interaction between the girl and the dog Surdo was quite nice but the dialogue and scene changes are terrible. You are suddenly somewhere else and you have no idea where and why. At least an information on the location would be nice.
And just like how you jump easily around, so suddenly do things just happen here, for example, two guys whose names I have already forgotten are in some temple, because ... no idea. Also that the main character simply knows that the bird the emperor killed was the only one who has loved him was never explained, not even evidence was there in any form. That happened all the time here and I have no idea what was really going on, except "demons emerge," or something. There was also something about a "war of black blood" and dragons but I have no idea what this was all about. It is so confusing and so without any tension and emotion that I really did not care what was happening, for example, the girl was apparently poisoned all the time without showing any symptoms, and the dog died because he sucked the poison out of here; and I was totally indifferent to this. The dog was also a man and is actually called Seir and is from another clan. The girl was supposed to talk with a dragon and there will probably be a war, then there was a huge snake (that the suddenly emerging girl in the eye-catching dress was associated with it was about as surprising as the rising of the sun) and it was as if to throw everything into the story. And it really didn't to the story any good, in my eyes. And in the end she does what the emperor demands because she suddenly wants to know who she is and why she can talk to animals, which she never had problems with before. Perhaps the whole thing was thrown into this manga to show depth but if so, it did not work with me. Not even close. And had I not written this review, I certainly would have long forgotten that this manga exists.

Arcana ist meine Manhwa-Premiere und gleich mal nicht so dolle. Ich habs um 3 € gebraucht gekauft und kann total verstehen, warum der Vorbesitzer es verschärbelt hat.
Es fängt eigentlich ganz gut an, mit einem Farbbild, das man auffalten kann. Was daran gleich negativ auffällt, ist der weiße Rand oben, weil das falsch geschnitten wurde. Da hat man beim Druck geschlampt. Aber als Manga-Leser ist man schlechte Verarbeitung ja gewohnt, da freut man sich dann noch über die nachfolgenden farbigen Seiten, die ja auch ganz hübsch sind.
Der Klappentext klang auch ganz toll:
Das junge Mädchen Inas kann die Sprache der Tiere verstehen. Durch diese besondere Gabe soll sie zur Rettung eines Königreiches beitragen [Anm. von Mira: Das Königreich hat tatsächlich keinen Namen sondern heißt einfach "Königreich"]. Mit ihrem treuen Hund [Anm. von Mira: Der schon gleich zu Anfang stribt] und einem seltsamen Beschützer [Anm. von Mira: Der komplett unlogisch ist und dessen Anwesenheit überhaupt keinen Sinn macht und auch nicht erklärt wird, und der kommt und geht wie es ihm passt, ohne dass das groß auffällt oder jemand es komisch findet] macht sie sich auf die Suche nach einem Drachen.

Tatsächlicher Inhalt
Der Klappentext ist nicht falsch, setzt aber die Schwerpunkte etwas anders als der Manhwa selber.
Nur alle 100 Jahre fällt Schnee. Als der Schnee also wieder mal zu fallen beginnt, sind alle Leute total verunsichert und sprechen von nichts anderem. Sie kennen den Winter nur aus Erzählungen und es macht ihnen Sorgen, dass der Boden gefriert und in der Kälte nichts wächst. Mir macht Sorgen, dass 1/4 des Buches dem Jammern über den Winter und den Schnee gewidmet ist, das erste Viertel des Buches, und das erste Kapitel sogar "Schnee, der nur alle 100 Jahre fällt" heißt, obwohl das nichts, und zwar gar nichts, mit der Geschichte an sich zu tun hat. Das erfährt man aber erst später, nämlich dann, wenn man von selber merkt, dass der Schnee keine Rolle mehr spielt.
Dann kommt plötzlich aus dem Nichts ein Schaf daher, das sich in einen Dämon verwandelt. Dann kommt aus dem Nichts irgendein Typ daher, der das Schaf zum Explodieren bringt. Das Schaf wird zu giftigem Staub, Inas atmet den ein, fällt in Ohnmacht, und wacht im Kaiserpalast wieder auf. Es stellt sich raus (ohne Überleitung, ohne Erklärung, einfach so), dass Inas Opa wohl irgendwie den Kaiser kennt, und dass Inas eine Auserwählte ist, die das Königreich retten muss, weil sie mit Tieren sprechen kann. Weil sie aber nur mit niederen Tieren sprechen kann, muss sie Quests erfüllen (die erst im nächsten Band anfangen), um die Sprache der Drachen zu lernen.
Meine Meinung
Es ist komplett unlogisch, und ich hab mich überhaupt nicht ausgekannt, weil die Handlung vollkommen unkontrolliert herumspringt. Es kommt mir total vor wie die Mangas, die ich mit 16 während dem Schulunterricht gezeichnet hab. Erstmal ist die Handlung eine Mischung aus Inu Yasha, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball und Doctor Dolittle und dann ist das larifari huschpfusch so hingedeichselt, dass möglichst viel Handlung in möglichst wenige Zeichnungen gequetscht wird damit das möglichst wenig Arbeit ist. Außerdem kommt die Geschichte trotz Herumspringerei nicht in die Gänge.
Was ich auch dämlich fand, war, dass man bei Dialogen mit Tieren nur Inas Part lesen kann, aber nicht erfährt, was die Tiere sagen.
Ich würd ja sagen, das ist für Kinder, aber dafür ist es viel zu depri. Alles da dran ist depri. Die Story ist depri, die Zeichnungen sind depri, die gesamte Umsetzung ist depri.
Zeichenstil
Depri, aber auch hässlich. Irgendwie total unproportional, außerdem spitz und kantig. Also auch kein Pluspunkt.
Fazit
In meinen Augen nichtmal die 3 € wert, und ich werde die Serie auf gar keinen Fall weiterverfolgen, nichtmal dann, wenn mir jemand die restlichen Bände schenken würde.
Deswegen nur ein kleiner weinender Koreaner:

I picked this one up because I was impressed with So-Young Lee's other series "Model"- both the art and the story.
However, I'm a little ambivalent about this story so far: young heroine in a fantasy kingdom can talk to animals, and thus, has a special destiny. However, no one seems very keen to explain it to her, or the audience. (Which is annoying.) Also the un-named antagonists remain such - anonymous and ... unmotivated.
... oh and something about dragons.
(seriously, I know this review is confusing - but it's like the author got lost in drawing pretty boys and forgot to clarify the plot.)
So if you can't deal with slow beginnings, and confusing (lack of) storylines... skip it. The art is pretty, and I love me some dragons & hot mysterious wizard guys... but... yeah. I like a clear plot to hang it on.

In my opinion, it really wasn't good. It was boring and had nothing interesting at all happen. The only thing I liked in the story was the dog. I gave it two stars though because since it was the first book in the series and had to set up for the plot so I understood that was probably why nothing much happened. The main thing I liked about the book was the cover itself. Beautiful. The book itself.. Plain and boring storyline.
