When figure skater Ari injures her ankle at a practice, with the championships only six weeks away, she goes to hockey player Eli, her brother’s best friend, to ask for his help. She doesn’t want to risk not being allowed to participate for a medal, so she’s trying to keep this a secret until her ankle heals. But Eli has always been interested in her, despite being strongly warned off by her brother Ren. So when Ari tempts him, the two will cross a line they probably should not have. How will overly-protective Ren act when he finds out? And does Eli intend to make their relationship more permanent, or was she just another fling for the hockey player?
Eli Carraway and Ren Martel are best friends. They had been friends since they were seniors in college, even though they had known each other since sophomore year. He was more than his friend; he was more like his brother. Ren’s baby sister, whom he took custody of when his parents were killed in a car accident when she was thirteen. Anyway, it happened just three months before Ren turned eighteen. Causing Arlette to enter foster care until he could get custody was not a good experience for her.
So, she never met Eli until she was eighteen, and then Ren warns them, as he did often, that they are to stay away from each other. Ren tells Arelette that he is no good for her. Then again, he said that about every guy that sniffed around. Too tall, too short, too loud, too quiet, too sneaky, etc. However, Ren has been in NY for over two months taking pictures for several weddings. While he’s gone, Arelette is practicing her figure skating routine for the championships. The first step to the Olympics. However, out of the blue, her ankle starts hurting her.
She can’t tell her coach because she will drop her. After all, she will make her sit out. She can't tell her brother because he will overreact and come home, neglecting his photography jobs there in NY. Due to the fact she spends her time on the ice, the only friend she has is Yasmine, and she knows she can't go to her and drag her into the web of lies she might have to tell her coach. The guy's final year of college, when they became joined at the hip. Even though she knew they'd never admit it, they'd both been completely miserable and angry at life, and the basis of their friendship had been formed on that shared misery, among other things.
Who said blood was thicker than water? They sure didn't know Eli and Ren, that is for sure. So, she goes against her brother’s wishes and seeks Eli out. That’s how much pain she is in. He came to her, perfect for what she needed and her ankle. "I'm supposed to stay fifty feet away from you," he said out loud, to no one in particular. Ari rolled her eyes, plopping down in the empty seat beside him, blocking the path so he couldn't make a run for it. "For the love of God, Eli…" "Do you always do what my brother tells you to do?" she asked in a calm, amused voice.
"When it concerns you? Yeah, pretty much." "Then why were you watching me?" she challenged, raising a brow. "Maybe because you're my best friend's sister, and I'm just making sure no weirdos hover over you?" She scoffed. "Look around. You're the weirdo hovering over me." "Have you ever had, uh... an ankle injury? Say, maybe a sprain or perhaps an injury that lingered for too long?" "My P.T. advised me to take the weight off it and ice it. I think I did that for about four days.
Good as new." Then I frowned at her. "Why? Do you have an injury?" "Nope, not me. Just asking for a friend. Thanks." “This is the longest conversation we've ever had, and we've known each other for five years." "True. I swear, your brother has threatened me so much that I now see you as an enemy." She chuckled. "And you're the big bad wolf coming to steal my virginity," I smirked. "So, you're a virgin, then?" "Wouldn't you like to know?" A couple of days later, "So, remember earlier when I told you a friend of mine had an injury that has lingered for too long?" I nodded. "The ankle injury, yeah?" "Yeah. Well, you see... the thing is... the friend is me. I'm the one with the injury."
"Okay. That's a lot to take in, but if you don't mind me asking, why are you here telling me this?" "Because you're the only one I know who can help me,” she said. Wait a damn minute. "Does Ren know about this?" snapped. "No, no. I'm sorry, but I can't help you. Not when your brother doesn't know." This is when I should have known that Eli was pretty much going to be a wimp throughout the whole book. Yes, there was a possibility of losing his friend, but he would be gaining the love of his life. And if Ren couldn't get in line with seeing his sister and best friend happy, then he’s an SOB too far gone to ever make him happy.
Figure skater and aspiring Olympian Ari has always had a massive crush on her brother’s bestie and huge womanizing NHL player Eli. Because of her brother warning him to stay away from her and the fact that she thinks he doesn’t know she exists, she’s sure he wants nothing to do with her. When she suffers an ankle injury during practice, Ari goes to Eli for help rather than risk her coach sidelining her from her chance at a medal.
Despite his best friend’s repeated threats to his manhood should he even look in Ari’s direction, Eli can’t turn her away when she shows up on his doorstep asking for help. Being in close quarters with Ari proves to be far too tempting for a hound like Eli, and the situation becomes a three alarm fire. What started as a secret fling turned into something more.
How on earth will Eli convince not just Ari but her over the top protective big brother that he’s in it for the long haul?
This was a decent new adult novella with some steamy bits. My biggest issue was the situation with Ari’s brother. He’s a lot too late in attempting to protect her from nefarious men, and that really grated on me.
I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksprout, and I’m sharing my honest opinion.
-brothers best friend -hockey -Third act break-up -found family
I picked up this book on a whim, and I found it to be an enjoyable and accessible read. The story subtly addresses some challenging themes. It follows the lives of Arlette and Eli. Eli is a professional hockey player who experienced a difficult childhood and found a friend in Ren, who had to mature quickly after the loss of his parents. Ren raised his sister, Arlette, an aspiring figure skater, but he tends to be overprotective of her. When Arlette finds herself in need of assistance, she turns to Eli, Ren's best friend. Eli is aware that a relationship with Arlette is complicated, but their mutual attraction is difficult to resist. Now, he faces the possibility of jeopardizing his friendship with the one person who truly understood him and was like a brother.
I will say one thing I had a hard time wrapping my brain around was Eli and Ren were best friends. The fact that Ren kept Arlette from being around Eli was weird. Heck they moved to Chicago because Eli traded teams so that was weird to me. But over all I enjoyed the book.
WOW I think I might just need Eli in my life. He is one HOT, Playboy hockey star that knows how to make a woman scream in the bedroom. I found myself laughing at times over the things that were said between Eli and Ren who have been best friends since college, and Ari is Ren's little sister who he is very and when I say very, I mean it protective of. They lost their parents to a drunk driver when they were young, and Ren has been her soul protector ever since. This part might bring a tear or two to your eyes. So, it's always been known that bros are before hoes as Eli says so Ari is totally off limits. That is until she becomes much more. This heart throbbing, mind blowing sexual tension read is going to have you throbbing in many places when you read this book and trust me you need to read this book by Leighton. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED every single chapter; scene and the characters are FRE@KING FANTASTIC. There is no way this book is just a 5/5 star read it is more like a 100/100.
OH WOW this was amazing story. The book cover caught my attention as soon as I turn the page. It was a steamy page turner and the suspense was intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn't even put it down. It was addicted. She was a damsel in distress with a forbidden love. Ari was figure skater and Eli was a hockey player as he was her brother's best friend. He was a playboy he thought he was god to all women. It was love at first sight between them in this moment. Their relationship had to be keep a secret as it was a forbidden but they were in love. The chemistry between them was a sexual attraction and the physical tension was intimacy and romance of drama and chaos. I highly recommend this book and you won't be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Trina Jones
Eli was a Hockey player ,he has a friend since his final year of college, despite knowing each other since sophomore year. They were like brothers. His friend has a sister but she’s off limits for him as a brother code. Because for his friend he was a slut. Arlette was athletic in figure skating ,one day she noticed him sitting watching her practice.she went to him and asked him what could heel an ankle injury but she didn’t asked about herself. Her friend asked her who was the hot guy she was talking ,and she told her the story but her friend suggested to go for it. While she was practicing she couldn’t move her leg and wanted help. her brother was out of town and she went straight to Eli apartment.
An Amazing book that I enjoyed reading I recommend it to who love reading Hockey books and forbidden love.

This is a great story that will hook you in the first chapter. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.
If your favorite tropes are hockey romance, beat friend’s little sister, forbidden love then this book is for you!
Reading Arlette and Eli’s story was absolutely brilliant. I’m absolutely speechless at how brilliant this book was. The mixture of emotions these two went through, the struggles and difficult decisions taken were perfectly written. I just loved how Eli cared about Arlette that I wanted to dive into the book and be her. I absolutely love Leighton’s writing style!
Even though he's always had a crush on Arlette, the little sister of his best friend, Eli has always respected the boundaries and kept away from her. Until she shows up on his door step, hurt and in need of help. Unable to turn her away, they decide to enjoy each other companies while her older brother is away. Tough decisions have to be made when big brother finally returns to town.
This book was a 3.5/5 stars for me. The premise was interesting and I enjoyed reading how Arlette and Eli grew their relationship. I was proud of Arlette for standing up for what she wanted and needed from Eli and her brother. Eli definitely had some growing up to do and some hard decisions to make. My heart also went out to her brother, Ren, who had been raising his sister since their parents died and feels like he let her down when she initially had to go to a foster family until he turned 18.
My best friend is the only family I truly have. Since bonding with him, I'm not lonely anymore. A hotshot hockey player, ladies man, rich don't mean a thing. His sister comes to me with an injury. I've always had feelings for her, but from afar as Ren would end our friendship and I'd loose my family. This well written, entertaining story of love finding it's way end, leading to heartbreak and loneliness all over again.

There is nothing worse than a self appointed protector. Especially when it's a family member. Well meaning as they may be, sometimes you have to let them know they're overbearing ways are too much.
Putting your best friend and sister in such fear of even speaking to each other is tragic. Fortunately, true love prevails. Eli and Ari had a spark that led to a roaring blaze, one that even an overbearing brother couldn't put out.
this is how you write best friend brother/sister the right way. love that as tough as he was, he ran from her as much as he could. love that she had innocence mixed with the flirty. love the dirty mouth he had. thought they were such a great couple and hated his turmoil over his best friend dilemma. i for where Ren was coming from given their history, but feel he was a little too over the top. would love to see him and her best friend in a story
Reading Eli and Arlette's story was absolutely amazing the attraction and chemistry the way he cared for her. The mixture of emotions and the struggles the difficult decisions they had to go through to be able to be together.

I loved Eli and Arlette's story. Eli was so swoony with how he took care of Arlette. They had such a great connection and so much steam. Loved their connection and how they just couldn't deny it even when Arlette's brother was not happy about it. So glad they get their happy ever after! Love Leighton Grace's books!

L Grace was at her best writing Power Play: My Best Friends Sister. The interaction between Ari and Eli, along with their individual background stories is worth the read. Thank You L Grace for writing this story.
Really enjoyed the story love from beginning to end. The characters growth was just absolutely amazing I love how they grew into who they really needed to be by being together. Can't wait to read more of her stuff
This quick and easy read has a good flow, chemistry, drama, and a possible HEA. The MCs are defined, belong together, and are likable and engaging. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
This was a beautiful love story about 2 friends one with a sister whom his friend told him was off limits to her. See what happens when they meet. It’s exciting. Great read
