Shoot Like Wes is a neat and beautifully arranged photography book that includes a lot of iconic Wes Anderson's shots. It is clear that the authors are huge fans of his films and could discuss them at length - they go over all of his major works, breaking down his techniques and illustrating them with high quality screenshots of the key scenes from his movies. Each chapter is centred around one movie and one specific aspect of his cinematography, and then followed up by a very loose tutorial on how to recreate similar look and composition in your own photography.
I am not entirely sure who this book is for, outside of Andersen-heads, it's definitely more of a coffee table book specimen than a proper educational tool. I can look at shots all day every day, and I had a lot of fun following these little deconstructions. But the overall language and delivery of Shoot Like Wes seem to me too technical for someone who's a newbie at film/photography, while actual tutorial sections are so basic and lacking technical advice or any juicy trade secrets (it's mostly: use complementary colours, think about the story behind your shot, use the rule of thirds, don't shoot backlit, etc. on repeat with some helpful tips here and there) that they hardly will teach you how to "shoot like Wes." I also don't love how the authors are way too coy about how much collective work actually goes into something like a Wes Anderson movie to make it look as good as it does. It is a nice primer/vision board, but mostly for fans, and I'd recommend you use your library to check it out.
