This book offers twenty patterns for cute crochet projects inspired by the National Parks. The author includes some information about the National Parks at the beginning, and about her love for exploring the parks and crocheting. Then she guides readers through different projects, which both she and other contributors designed. Each project is an homage to a different National Park, and while some of the connections are a bit of a stretch, most of these relate in fun, clear ways to the places that inspired them.

One thing I noticed is that the author wasn't consistent in mentioning where a park is located. With each pattern, she explains which park inspired it, and shares a little bit of information about that park. Sometimes, she'll say what US state or region the park is in, but with some of these intros, you would have to flip back to the list of parks at the beginning of the book to see where that park is located.

The projects vary in complexity and in the level of skill required. The author includes some basic information about crocheting fundamentals at the end, and includes translations of the abbreviations in the patterns, but this is definitely geared towards people who already know what they're doing, since most of these would be confusing and complex for a true beginner. This is best for intermediate to advanced crocheters who love nature and are looking for unique project designs.

I received a free copy from the publisher through Amazon Vine, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This had more variation in the patterns than Knitting the National Parks: 63 Easy-to-Follow Designs for Beautiful Beanies Inspired by the US National Parks-- it includes patterns for fingerless mitts, socks, scarves, and more.

This is not for first-time crocheters, but there are a few flat rectangle pieces that would be reasonable for beginner-plus crafters.

A good purchase for libraries, not a must-have for most home collections. I didn't particularly like the tone of the introduction-- please don't take up this limited real estate by pushing your Instagram or whatever at me-- but it's not horrendous.

What I liked: Crochet projects inspired by the colors or scenery at 20 National Parks

What I disliked: The instructions are complicated, and feel as though they were invented after the projects were uniquely created

Pluses: full crochet how-to in the back, charts and diagrams as well as written patterns, lots of different projects (leg warmers, bags, coasters, wall hangings, etc.)

Minuses (for me): Most of the patterns were inspired as to the color rather than the stitch patterns. Many of them rely on color work, some on specific color varied yarn. This makes substituting yarns out of my stash not as easy. Also, I felt like many of the projects just come off as being not-as-grand as their inspiration.

Conclusion: If you're newer to crochet or really love color work, give this book a look. I've seen books inspired by nature that appeal to me more.

Given my enthusiasm for national parks, it's a little disappointing that there only two patterns here that tempt me to grab a crochet hook.
