La Louisiane

Rate this book
Paris, 1720.

CWs: implied domestic abuse, slavery, anti Indigenous racism

Galley provided by publisher

Pelican Girls was far from a badly written book in the simplest sense, but it was spectacularly uncompelling for a book aiming to be as character-driven as this. For this plot to work (a plot where very little happens on the page: that is, so much of it is simply mentions of events that happen out of sight), I needed to care a lot more about any of the characters. But, callous as it might sound, I didn’t care in the slightest about any of the narrators. They were bland and boring and a good chunk of anything I got about them in terms of character development consisted of simply being told about them. As I said, spectacularly uncompelling and unsympathetic. And that was before one of them became a slave-owner. Am I supposed to mind that less because she didn’t treat them horrifically? Ha.

Unrelatedly, this book also contained a pet peeve: random French words thrown into the narrative instead of their English equivalents, when every single main character here is… speaking French. A minor quibble it may seem, but still irritating enough.

I really wanted to love this book. The synopsis sounded amazing and something that I would absolutely love. But I really had a hard time getting into it for whatever reason. It was a struggle to pick up and read and when I was reading it, it was hard to focus on the plot. I just wasn't drawn into the story like I wished I would have been. This could definitely be a right book/wrong time sort of situation, and unfortunately I wanted to love it more than I did.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, which in no way impacts my review.

This beautiful, interesting novel is set during the colonization of Louisiana (then known as La Louisiane) by the French. Specifically, the reader learns of French women who had been hospitalized or imprisoned in the Saltpetriere facility and were sent (in the 1720’s) by the French government to the colony of Louisiana to become wives of the male colonists already there (and, of course, to have many French babies). Apparently, at that time in France it was not difficult have someone (a family member, a servant, etc.) committed to Salpetriere due to “mental issues” or as a result of petty crime. This novel follows four young women, who were residents of (or prisoners in) Saltpetriere and sent to Louisiana. Genevieve was accused of being an abortionist (she had a great knowledge of herbs, which plays an ongoing role throughout the novel). Petronille was from a wealthy family and had been committed because she was just a little different socially and her face was marked with a birthmark. Charlotte was left at the facility as an orphan, and Etiennette was imprisoned for stealing a ribbon.

After being selected to go to Louisiana, the young women (along with others) were sent on a long and perilous journey across France and then across the Atlantic. The details of this journey are vividly written. The reader experiences their physical suffering, the emotional toll the journey took on them, and the development of deep friendships among them. Upon their arrival in Louisiana, they were almost immediately selected by men, married and moved to their respective new homes. The novel then relates their lives in this barely explored, harsh and unique land. The reader follows the womens’ lives through traditional female relationships: men and marriages (good and bad); childbirth and child rearing; and, always, relationships with each other. The stories are heartbreaking and beautiful. Each of the four women is a fully developed character with a complete set of her own loves, difficulties, jealousies, and events. The descriptions of time and place were magnificent and complete. South Louisiana in the 1720’s becomes fully alive: travel in pirogues; early New Orleans; disease and non-traditional ways to fight it; upper class life and life in a convent; wonderful and supportive relationships with Native Americans to bloody clashes between the colonizers and the Native Americans whose land they were taking for their own; and the beauty and destructive power of nature (hurricane warnings were quite limited!). The politics and religion of the time were also relevant – slavery and the presence and power of the Catholic church were frequently occurring underlying themes.
The writing was a perfect combination of being beautiful and descriptive but still telling a completely human story. I was absolutely captivated by the lives the women endured, the history the novel covered, and, ultimately, the friendship among the women that, although challenged at times, was stronger than any outside forces.

The historical setting was so intriguing but this book was all over the place. The end also got way too into “some white women were good slave owners” and the one chapter from the native woman’s perspective felt like it was pushing the same message

This was such a tideous read. I really, REALLY wanted to like this book as it's exploring themes dear to my heart: forgotten women in history, sapphic love, female friendships, the ramifications of colonisation... but i couldn't connect to any of the characters. The chapters were way too long. There were a few lovely written passages sprinkled here and there and I will follow Julia Malye's future work cos this book had a lot of potential but it didn't feel epic like I thought it would be. Very very well researched though. Mixed feelings!

It took me eons to get into this book and have interest in the characters. I struggled through the first half, then it seemed to smooth out and the characters grew into themselves and I became more invested. Some wonderful historical details of a difficult time for both the women who were basically conscripted to marry white pioneer men in Louisiana (who, warning to men, mostly come off as barbaric and violent and misogynistic) with some acknowledgment of the plight of the indigenous tribes that were betrayed and pushed out. The issue of slavery is barely confronted.

Overall, I'm glad I read it. Malye has touches of brilliance and there was a lot to learn about this time in history.

Book 55 of 2024: Pelican Girls by Julia Malye

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In 1720 Paris, La Salpêtrière hospital has too many occupants and not enough beds. Halfway across the world, France's colony in the wilds of North America has space to spare and needs families to fill it. So the director of the hospital rounds up nearly a hundred female “volunteers” of childbearing age—orphans, prisoners, and mental patients—to be shipped to New Orleans. Among this group are three unlikely friends: a sharp-tongued twelve-year old orphan, a mute ‘madwoman,’ and an accused abortionist. Charlotte, Pétronille, and Geneviève, along with the dozens of other women aboard La Baleine, have no knowledge of what lies ahead and no control over their futures. Strangers brought together by fate, these brave and fierce young women will face extraordinary adversity, but also the private trauma of heartbreak and unrequited love, children born and lost, cruelty and unexpected pleasure, and a friendship forged in fire that will sustain through the years.

Phyllis’s Former Students Book Club read for April! I really wanted to love this book as it sounded so interesting from the premise but I had a hard time getting into it. The book was extremely character-driven and parts of the narratives were compelling but I had a hard time following a lot of the stories and lost interest in the characters at many points. The book was incredibly well researched and I appreciated the author’s intentions to give voice to the lost women of history. However, the novel didn’t really have much of a plot structure and was kind of all over the place at times, which made me disengage or feel confused. The writing itself was beautiful. I think I just had higher expectations for this book and it lacked the execution necessary to meet them.

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. I usually like historical fiction, and even if it starts off slow I usually give it time and it will pick up. This, never did. It was all talk and nothing interesting. The characters were quite boring and their stories just did not elicit any kind of response for me whatsoever. The idea of this book sounded interesting, but was executed poorly. I couldn't wait to be done with it.

Thanks to Goodreads for the ARC giveaway. The book is really good.

Women and girls are chosen to leave France to go to Louisiana in America to become brides. Among those is an orphan, a convict and a mental patient. These 3 bond and become friends. The book spans 14 years. Tells of their friendship, marriage (several for 2) and life. Through good times and bad they remain in touch and help each other. Lots of history involved.

3.5 rounded up... I'm pretty sure??

Ok. Many moons later and I'm writing my review. Got busy and couldn't find the right words to convey my thoughts.

The premise of the book is really what got me to pick this up; I'm a diverse reader but it's not what I'd immediately go for. I got sucked in. A historical novel filled with plight. Multiple POV's that span years and overlap with one another. Harrowing but highlighting the strength of the women struggling and overcoming. Themes exploring mental health, friendship, abortion in a especially difficult time, love, infertility, the toils of being a woman in the 1700's just to name a few.

I did struggle to connect with the characters however and it effected the full impact the story could have have made. Nonetheless, I would absolutely recommend this and I'll be anticipating anything Malye writes in the future.

Book club read.
The book skipped over so many life events that it felt like I wasn’t getting the whole picture on anything. New characters came out of nowhere and I couldn’t keep track of it. There was a somewhat love story that also felt very underdeveloped that I wish I could have seen more of. I also didn’t love the whole “I have slaves, but I treat them nicely” aspect of the end of the book. Overall, the idea was super interesting and parts of the history and the girls’ experiences were intriguing but it didn’t have me hooked.

2.5⭐️ I really really wanted to like this book. The synopsis was intriguing and felt like something I’d enjoy and I was looking forward to this a lot. However. This is a complex story which I think I failed to appreciate or get sucked into. I kept putting this down (partway through chapters even!) and found the storyline hard to follow. There wasn’t a moment where I was absorbed into the world and because of that it was a struggle to finish. Fascinating period and piece of history, not sure the execution was quite there unfortunately. Or perhaps this is just a case of great book - wrong time for me to read it.

I really enjoyed this one. I think a big reason is because I love New Orleans (I've visited several times) and find the history of the region really fascinating. As someone who grew up in New England and that now lives in New York, so much of the early settler history I learned was centered around English settlers. There's so much about the French settlement of this continent and the creation of New Orleans that I find really fascinating, and as such this book drew me in. I have a non-fiction book about the French settlement and creation of New Orleans that I bought on my last trip that I now plan to read soon to pair with this fictional telling. I also particularly liked how this was from the female perspective of the French colony. It was also cool that the Ursuline convent played a role in the story, having visited the exterior. I get why some reviewers felt the characters were flat and the narrative dragged, but I think my own personal interest in this specific aspect of history is what kept me engaged.

Manau, tikrai neblogai perteikta to laikotarpio moterų gyvenimas, kad be vyro ilgai saugiai negyvensi, o šalimais gyvenantys indėnai nelabai tryško džiaugsmu, kai baltieji vis labiau plėtėsi į jų žemes.
