About the author

Holly grew up in Bedfordshire, UK, and has been a bookworm for as long as she can remember. Her love of reading soon turned into a passion for writing, and from an early age she was filling notebooks and floppy disks (remember those?) with the stories she’d invented.

After studying creative writing at art school, Holly worked as a magazine editor, marketer and creative copywriter. Her love story The Sight Of You will be published in the UK and 23 other territories around the world in 2020, and has also been optioned for film by a Hollywood studio.

Holly lives in the Norfolk countryside with her husband and their rescue dog, a border collie. She is currently editing her second novel and has started work on a third.

Ξεκινώντας το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο δεν ήμουν σίγουρη για το τι θα διαβάσω, ήξερα όμως, διαβάζοντας τη περίληψη, ότι αυτή η ιστορία θα με αγγίξει. Έτσι και έγινε!

Από την αρχή η συγγραφέας βάζει τον αναγνώστη στην ιστορία χωρίζοντας τα κεφάλαια χρονικά, με το Τότε και το Τώρα. Στο τότε η πρωταγωνίστρια μας συστήνει τον έρωτα της ζωής της τον Τζέιμι αλλά και την καλύτερη φίλη της Λάρα. Βλέπουμε την πορεία τους από το σχολείο στο πανεπιστήμιο, την προσαρμογή τους στη νέα πραγματικότητα, τη σχέση τους, τα όνειρα τους και τα σχέδια για το μέλλον τους. Βέβαια και τις δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίζουν.

Στο τώρα λοιπόν, δέκα περίπου χρόνια μετά από ένα τραγικό συμβάν, η Νεβ δεν έχει πια κοντά της τους δύο πιο σημαντικούς ανθρώπους της ζωής της. Ο Τζέιμι πέθανε σε ατύχημα και με την Λάρα δεν ξαναμίλησε ποτέ από τότε.

Εκείνο το μοιραίο βράδυ ένα άλλο ατύχημα άλλαξε τη ζωή του Ας ριζικά και μετά από αυτό έγινε άλλος άνθρωπος. Τώρα λοιπόν θα τον συναντήσει τυχαία η Νεβ και θα νιώσει την ίδια οικειότητα που είχε νιώσει με τον Τζέιμι. Θα παρατηρήσει πολλές ομοιότητες, από τον τρόπο ζωής μέχρι τα ενδιαφέροντα και τις προτιμήσεις του και αυτή η εμμονική σύγκριση με τον Τζέιμι θα σταθεί εμπόδιο στη νέα ευκαιρία της για ευτυχία. Στη ζωή της εμφανίζεται ξανά και η Λάρα η οποία επιστρέφει στη πόλη παλεύοντας με τα δικά της μυστικά.

Είναι ένα δυνατό βιβλίο για τις ανθρώπινες σχέσεις, την απώλεια, το πένθος, την συγχώρεση και τις δεύτερες ευκαιρίες. Η ιστορία μιας γυναίκας που έχει χάσει τον εφηβικό έρωτα της ζωής της και αρνείται να προχωρήσει, κινδυνεύοντας να χάσει τους ανθρώπους που αξίζουν να είναι στη ζωή της. Συγκινήθηκα αρκετά αλλά περισσότερο με άγγιξε η φιλική σχέση της Νεβ με την Λάρα, για μένα ήταν το πιο δυνατό σημείο του βιβλίου οπότε θα ήθελα η συγγραφέας να εστιάσει περισσότερο σε εκείνες.

Ομολογώ ότι σε μερικά σημεία που η πρωταγωνίστρια σύγκρινε συνέχεια τον Ας με τον Τζέιμι και επέμενε στην θεωρία της, κάπως με ενοχλούσε αλλά καταλαβαίνω ότι το καταπιεσμένο πένθος μπορεί να παίξει με το μυαλό. Πόνεσα μαζί της και προσπαθούσα να μπω στη θέση της κάθε φορά για να την κατανοήσω περισσότερο. Της άξιζε να προχωρήσει να και να βρει την λύτρωση!

Ένα κοινωνικό-αισθηματικό βιβλίο που αξίζει να διαβάσετε! Το προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα!

3.5 αστέρια με μια συγκινητικη ιστορια απο τη συγγραφέα. Ίσως βεβαια λανθασμένα εστίασε σε εναν έρωτα ενώ τα πιο βαθιά συναισθηματα μας τα προκαλεσε η φιλια της Νεβ με τη Λάρα.

I throughly enjoyed reading Holly Miller’s latest novel The Spark. I knew from a previous book of hers, The Sight of You, that she creates unlikely or impossible scenarios and makes them completely believable. In The Spark, Neve believes that the spirit of her partner Jamie has transferred into the body of another man, Ash. She becomes convinced of this because when she meets Ash, he has so much in common with Jamie and she feels a immediate sense of recognition and familiarity.

I liked the way the story moved between now and then. In the past we read about Jamie and Neve’s great love and what their life together was like. In the present, we see Neve falling in love with Ash while really believing that he might be some kind of incarnation of Jamie. It is clear that she has unresolved grief and she is pinning her hopes on her theory being true.

I had very mixed feelings about Neve and they made me very invested in the story. On the one hand, I felt such empathy for her and all she had lost. I could understand her sorrow and why she so wanted her theory to be true. On the other hand, I found myself quite annoyed with her that she couldn’t seem to see Ash for the wonderful person he was and I didn’t want her to hurt him. She truly is a flawed character but one I liked nonetheless.

There were so many other great characters in the book and Neve’s friend Lara is one of them. Their friendship had drifted over the years mainly because of Neve’s actions but Lara was still there for Neve. It was uplifting to see these two reconnect and rekindle that friendhsip.

If I have one tiny criticism it is that the ending seemed quite abrupt. It was exactly the ending I hoped for but it just seemed to happen and then, boom, the book was done.

Holly Miller is so good at these ‘what if’ type stories and I found this one very compelling. It also turned out to be a very emotional read for reasons I wasn’t expecting. With themes of grief, friendship, love and forgiveness The Spark is another hopeful and touching read from Holly Miller.

Χαίρομαι αφάνταστα που ανακάλυψα τη Holly Miller, δεν έχω καλύτερο απ’το να βιάζομαι να τελειώσω τις δουλειές μου για να συνεχίσω το διάβασμα, ή ακόμα και να τις παραλείπω, γιατί η ιστορία είναι τόσο καλή που οριακά δε μπορώ να σκεφτώ τίποτα άλλο. Επίσης μου αρέσει να κλαίω. Και είμαι ο πιο ρομαντικός άνθρωπος που γνωρίζω, χωρίς όμως να απαιτώ happy end πάντοτε.

Η Νεβ ήταν ακόμα έφηβη όταν βρήκε τον παντοτινό έρωτα στο πρόσωπο του Τζέιμι και το αίσθημα ήταν τόσο αμοιβαίο που μετατράπηκε σε ένα ενθουσιώδες πλάνο για ένα γεμάτο μέλλον, μαζί, για πάντα. Βέβαια δεν ξέρω κατα πόσο αυτή η σιγουριά είναι αποτέλεσμα ωριμότητας κι όχι αυτής της πρώτης επαφής με τον έρωτα όπου είσαι περισσότερο ερωτευμένο με την ιδέα της αγάπης.

Βέβαια αυτή δεν είναι μια απλή ιστορία αγάπης που όλα πάνε όπως θα ‘πρεπε μετά από μερικά εμπόδια, όχι. Ένα μοιραίο βράδυ ο Τζέιμι χάνει τη ζωή του, το κοινό όνειρο για μια ζωή μαζί γκρεμίζεται και ο θρήνος της Νεβ θα τη συντροφεύει για χρόνια. Το ίδιο βράδυ ο νεαρός Ας παθαίνει ένα τραγικό ατύχημα απ’ το οποίο ναι μεν επιβιώνει, η ζωή του όμως αλλάζει ριζικά.

Λίγα χρόνια μετά, οι δρόμοι της Νεβ και του Ας θα συναντηθούν απρόσμενα και η έλξη θα είναι αμοιβαία. Ο Ας όμως μοιάζει εκπληκτικά στον Τζέιμι, όχι εξωτερικά, αλλά υπάρχει κάτι τόσο ανεξήγητο που η Νεβ νομίζει πως χάνει το μυαλό της - είναι ο Ας αυτός που την ελκύει ή η σκέψη ότι η ψυχή του νεκρού πρώην συντρόφου της βρίσκεται μέσα του;

Μια ιστορία για τον έρωτα και τη φιλία, τη διαχείριση της απώλειας και του θρήνου, τα νέα ξεκινήματα και τις δεύτερες ευκαιρίες, τόσο έντονη που σε κατακλύζει ολοκληρωτικά.

Ακόμα και στιγμές που δυσανασχετούσα με την επιμονή της πρωταγωνίστριας στο παρελθόν και το σελφ σαμποτάζ της, προσπαθούσα να σκέφτομαι ακριβώς αυτό που η Miller ήθελε να μου επικοινωνήσει: ο θρήνος είναι ύπουλος κι επίμονος και πολλές φορές, για να προχωρήσουμε μπροστά πρέπει πρώτα να διασχίσουμε το δύσκολο, βροχερό μονοπάτι των επίπονων συναισθημάτων για να φτάσουμε στη λιακάδα της ψυχής, σε εκείνο το συναίσθημα που έρχεται σα δροσερό αεράκι και σε ωθεί να δεις επιτέλους καθαρά και να προχωρήσεις μπροστά, ελεύθερη, γεμάτη αγάπη.

I have no words of how much I LOVED this book. I felt this book in every cell, every bone and every breath in my body. This book talks about partner loss and finding new love. I lost my partner just over two months ago, it was a pain that I can’t endure but this book gives me hope of the future, not falling in love again, but healing.

This book was incredibly that for me, it changed my life and how I view life following such a great loss. Also the ending was very sad that I nearly teared up. It was so happy and sad and peaceful and u forgivable. But this book has come to me in the perfect time when I needed it. If I was reading this book 2 months ago I would’ve cried and cried, but this was the perfect time for me.

Amazing. Mind changing. Life changing.

This was my first Holly Miller novel and I wasn’t sure what to expect at first.

The story starts slow and really picks up towards the end which made me want to keep going and find out what happened.

I didn’t like Jamie from the beginning, I felt as if something was off with him and his family early on. I liked Neve’s character but felt frustrated with her and her choices at times.
Lara’s ending had me in tears, she was the true hero in the story.

A good story about grief, friendships, moving on and the importance of honesty.

This book was chosen for my book club and I went into this blindly, having only read the blurb and potentially associated it slightly with the plot of the film Last Christmas. And I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, falling into the story quite quickly, even if it was a bit too dragged out in places.

The Spark was a very easy read, and while I’m not usually a huge fan of books set in the UK, I quite enjoyed the settings of this. Even the references to the middle of Lidl, it just worked. I found the intense descriptions of interior design a bit dull as I don’t have any interest in buildings but I did understand its purpose. But I really liked the back and forth between Then and Now, finding myself wanting to jump back to Then to find out more about where it had left off.

I’m not sure how I feel about Neve’s character. I liked elements of her but I felt she didn’t have much personality. Her personality was Jamie and she didn’t seem to know how to grieve, meaning all she thought about was others or work, rather than her own interests and while this was a part of her character and the story, it made her hard to read about. I felt sorry for her, where she had clearly suffered a lot and had never gotten the help she’d needed, and I wanted the best for her in her new relationship and her friendships, but she made it hard to believe in her when she didn’t help herself.

I found the repetitive nature of this book a bit dull, going over and over about whether Ash could be Jamie. At times I genuinely wondered if this would take a fantasy turn and it kept me hooked, almost believing Neve’s theories, however, other times it just felt a bit too repetitive and I wondered where the story would go. But by the end I understood. This is a story of love but also a story of grief, friendship, self worth, and self belief. It’s about believing what is real, rather than what you want to see. And realising who the real loves in your life are, both romantic and platonic, and using your time to appreciate them. This is what I really liked about the story.

I do think this story could have been executed in a slightly shorter way and I saw some of the twists coming (albeit some caught of completely off guard and broke my heart), but ultimately the message of this was something I really appreciated. To live in the now, to take people for what they are and to love and live with them. To process emotions and to enjoy life, not to live in the past.

I found this book so easy to read and I didn’t want to put it down at times, even when bits dragged on, and I think Holly Miller has created a story filled with purpose. While I don’t believe this story is life-changing, it makes you think and takes your heart on a journey which I really enjoyed.

Ooof, this book is brimming with grief and trauma and loss, but I loved it. Cause there's hope and healing and love in it as well.

I just wish the ending wasn't so... abrupt.
But, overall, a beautiful story. The main character, Neve, did manage to frustrate me at times, but despite her flawed behaviour and unresolved grief, she was quite likeable. I was on her side from the beginning.

I forgot how beautiful Holly Miller's writing is. Quite magical, as well.

Όταν είμαστε νέοι κι ερωτευόμαστε πρώτη φορά, τείνουμε να πιστεύουμε πως αυτό το συναίσθημα θα κρατήσει για πάντα. Πως η πρώτη μας σχέση θα είναι η μία και μοναδική. Πως έχουμε βρει τον άνθρωπό μας, εκείνον που γεννήθηκε για να είναι μαζί μας. Σαφέστατα, η ζωή, σύντομα συνήθως, αποδεικνύει πως όλα αυτά δεν ισχύουν και πως ο ενθουσιασμός της νιότης και η λαχτάρα που γεννά μέσα σου η πρώτη σου αγάπη, σε κάνει να τα βλέπεις όλα ρόδινα και ιδανικά, χωρίς απαραίτητα να είναι. Ή κι αν είναι, αυτό δεν σημαίνει πως μπορούν να κρατήσουν τα πάντα, γιατί... η ζωή συμβαίνει! Τόσο απλά! Το σίγουρο, όμως, σε κάθε περίπτωση, είναι πως η πρώτη αγάπη σε σημαδεύει με τρόπους καμία άλλη δεν μπορεί να τα καταφέρει στο πέρασμα των χρόνων, κυρίως γιατί ποτέ ξανά δεν θα αγαπήσεις με όλη αυτή την αθωότητα και την γλυκιά αφέλεια του τότε. Ωστόσο, αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν θα ξαναγαπήσεις, σωστά;

Οι Νεβ και Τζέιμι, μόλις στα δεκαοχτώ τους χρόνια, είναι πεπεισμένοι πως έχουν βρει ο ένας στο πρόσωπο του άλλου το ιδανικό ταίρι, τον άνθρωπο με τον οποίο θέλουν να περάσουν όλη την υπόλοιπη ζωή τους μαζί, έστω κι αν οι γύρω τους φαίνεται να τους αμφισβητούν λόγω του νεαρού της ηλικίας τους. Το ίδιο βράδυ, μόλις έναν δρόμο μακριά, ο Ας χτυπιέται από έναν κεραυνό, όμως καταφέρνει τελικά να επιζήσει. Ωστόσο, όσο διαρκεί η ανάρρωσή του, η οικογένειά του παρατηρεί κάποιες αλλαγές πάνω του, σαν να μεταμορφώνεται σιγά σιγά σε έναν διαφορετικό άνθρωπο από εκείνον που γνώριζαν μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή.

Τα χρόνια περνάνε και από σύμπτωση, οι δρόμοι της Νεβ και του Ας διασταυρώνονται, με τους δυο τους να νιώθουν μια αμοιβαία έλξη. Όμως η Νεβ παρατηρεί και κάτι ακόμα. Ο Ας μοιάζει πολύ με τον Τζέιμι, όχι εμφανισιακά αλλά ψυχικά, κάτι που την μπερδεύει και την κάνει να αναρωτιέται, όχι μόνο αν μπορεί ν' αγαπήσει ξανά, αλλά αν η έλξη που νιώθει για τον Ας είναι πραγματική ή οφείλεται στο γεγονός πως η ψυχή του νεκρού πρώην συντρόφου της βρίσκεται με κάποιον παράξενο τρόπο μέσα του. Όπως αντιλαμβάνεστε, η ιστορία αυτή, περισσότερο από κάθε τι άλλο, έχει να κάνει με τη διαχείριση του πένθους, που δεν είναι το ίδιο εύκολη για όλους τους ανθρώπους, και που καμιά φορά αποτελεί τροχοπέδη στο να μπορέσουν να ζήσουν μια ευτυχισμένη κι ολοκληρωμένη ζωή, όχι απαραίτητα ξεχνώντας το παρελθόν τους, αλλά αφήνοντάς το πίσω, εκεί ακριβώς όπου ανήκει.

Η συγγραφέας έχει προσεγγίσει με πολύ σεβασμό και τρυφερότητα αυτή την τόσο μελαγχολική ιστορία, που ακολουθεί την Νεβ σε ένα πολύ δύσκολο "ταξίδι", εκείνο της διαχείρισης μιας απώλειας και της αποδέσμευσής της από ένα παρελθόν που μοιάζει σαν να της έχει φορέσει αόρατες αλυσίδες. Υπάρχουν στιγμές που νιώθουμε ν' αγανακτούμε μαζί της, όμως, τις ίδιες ακριβώς στιγμές, νιώθουμε συμπόνοια για το προσωπικό της δράμα, με τα συναισθήματά μας να αλληλοσυγκρούονται, όπως ακριβώς και τα δικά της. Η αφήγηση ρέει και μας παρασύρει μαζί της, ενώ διακρίνεται και για τον ρεαλισμό της, που μας πονάει μεν, μας συγκινεί δε, καλώντας μας να μπούμε στα δικά της παπούτσια και ν' αφουγκραστούμε τη δική της αλήθεια.

Σε αυτή τη δύσκολη κι επίπονη διαδρομή, η Νεβ δεν είναι μόνη της, με τη συγγραφέα, εκτός όλων των άλλων, ν' αναδεικνύει τη δύναμη και στην σπουδαιότητα της φιλίας, που πολλές φορές μπορεί να μας τραβήξει από τα προσωπικά μας σκοτάδια και να μας βοηθήσει να έρθουμε λίγο πιο κοντά στο φως και, τελικά, στην προσωπική μας απελευθέρωση. Η παρουσία της Λάρα είναι καταλυτική και η σχέση της με τον πρωταγωνίστριά μας είναι υπέροχη, με την Miller να την εξερευνά σε βάθος και να γεννά μέσα μας την ελπίδα για ένα πιο αισιόδοξο μέλλον. Μια ιστορία για τον έρωτα, τη δύναμη της φιλίας, τη διαχείριση της απώλειας και του πένθους, τις δεύτερες ευκαιρίες στη ζωή που μας οδηγούν σε νέα ξεκινήματα που δεν είναι πάντοτε εύκολα, αλλά που πρέπει να γίνουν, που μας θυμίζει πως η ελπίδα δεν χάνεται, ακόμα κι όταν όλα μοιάζουν να έχουν χαθεί.

Herzergreifende Lektion in Sachen loslassen

Neve und Jamie sind seit Schulzeiten das Traumpaar schlechthin, doch dann kommt Jamie bei einem tragischen Autounfall uns Leben und Neve verfällt in tiefe Trauer, die sie jedoch nicht verarbeiten kann. Als sie Jahre später auf Ash trifft, der Jamie in vielem so unsagbar ähnlich erscheint, verrennt sie sich in der Idee, es habe eine Seelenwanderung stattgefunden und Ash sei die Reinkarnation von Jamie. Ist etwas dran an ihrer Theorie oder kann Neve ihre große Liebe einfach nicht loslassen? Und wie ist ihre älteste Freundin Lara in Alldem verstrickt?

Alles, was wir niemals sagten war mein erster Roman von Holly Miller und ich habe mich direkt in ihren, fesselnden, aber dennoch wahnsinnig leichten Schreibstil verliebt. Die gelesenen Kapitel flogen einfach nur so dahin. Teilweise habe ich wirklich alles stehen und liegen gelassen, nur um weiterlesen zu können. Die Handlungsorte, Situationen und natürlich die Protagonisten, sind bildhaft, liebevoll und gleichzeitig sehr eindringlich beschrieben - ich war gleich in der Story drin, als würde ein Film vor mir ablaufen. Im Verlauf das Buches werden viele Fragen aufgeworfen, vieles was ich unbedingt beantwortet wissen wollte, mich aber fast bis zum Schluss gedulden musste, was sich einerseits quälend angefühlt hat, andererseits aber auch durchweg die Spannung aufrecht erhalten hat. Die Handlung findet im „Jetzt“, aber auch im „Damals“ statt, so dass man nur Häppchenweise den gesamten Umfang der Geschehnisse erfährt, um dann vom unerwarteten Ende überwältigt zu werden.

Ja, irgendwann, während des Buches, begann mich Neve mit ihrer wirklich verbissenen und davon besessenen Idee wirklich zu nerven und ich hätte sie schütteln können. Doch nichts desto trotz hat mich das Buch - obwohl nicht unbedingt mein Genre - so gefesselt, dass ich unbedingt und immer weiterlesen musste, was in der letzten Zeit kaum ein Buch in diesem Umfang geschafft hat. Daher konnte ich, trotz zwischenzeitlichem „Genervtsein“, gar nicht anders, als volle fünf Sterne zu vergeben. Irgendwie gehört doch auch das mit dazu und macht ein Buch nicht schlechter, im Gegenteil, genau so ist das Leben - Sind wir nicht alle mal von den verbissenen Ansichten unserer Freunde genervt, möchten sie wachrütteln und ziehen dennoch nicht gleich einen Punkt von der Freundschaftsskala ab? Verrennen wir uns nicht selbst manchmal in Dinge, bei denen uns Andere am Liebsten schütteln mögen? Haben wir nicht alle irgendwo ein Problem damit loszulassen?

Fazit: Eine wirklich mitreißende und fesselnde Geschichte, die mir stellenweise das Herz zerrissen und mich in Sachen „loslassen“ zum Nachdenken gebracht hat. Für mich auf jeden Fall eine ganz klare Empfehlung!

Αυτός ο πρώτος έρωτας που σε χτυπάει κεραυνοβόλα και δεν ξέρεις που πατάς και που βρίσκεσαι; Αυτό ζούσε η Νεβ με τον Τζέιμι. Μαζί από παιδιά, έχτιζαν το κοινό τους μέλλον. Μέχρι που ένα τροχαίο τους χωρίζει και εκείνη χάνει τη γη κάτω από τα πόδια της. Από εκεί και έπειτα εκείνη απλά υπήρχε! Χωρίς κανένα ενδιαφέρον να ζήσει τη ζωή της, πέφτει με τα μούτρα στη δουλειά και κάνει εφήμερες σχέσεις που ξέρει οτι δεν θα την οδηγήσουν πουθενά. Μέχρι την ημέρα που γνωρίζει τον Ας και η ζωή της παίρνει στροφή 360 μοιρών. Κάπου εκεί συνειδητοποιεί οτι ο άντρας που γνώρισε και ερωτεύεται έχει πολλά κοινά χαρακτηριστικά με το αγόρι που αγάπησε τόσο πολύ. Και εσύ αναρωτιέσαι, πως είναι δυνατόν να υπάρχουν τόσες συμπτώσεις ανάμεσα σε αυτούς τους δυο ανθρώπους;
- Η συγγραφέας πολύ έξυπνα μας μεταφέρει στο παρελθόν, βιώνοντας την σχέση της Νεβ και του Τζέιμι από το σημείο μηδέν, αλλά και στο παρόν, με τον Ας. Η πρωτοπρόσωπη αφήγηση σε κάνει να γίνεσαι ένα με την ηρωίδα.
- Πόσες φορές στενοχωρήθηκα για τον Ας; Άστο. Από την μία προσπαθούσα να δικαιολογήσω την Νεβ και να πω οκ, η ζωή της πήρε άδικα και χωρίς καμία προειδοποίηση τον πρώτο της έρωτα, αλλά από την άλλη, τι φταίει ο Ας; Δεν μπορούσα να κατανοήσω αν είναι με αυτόν τον άνθρωπο επειδή πραγματικά το θέλει ή επειδή έχει την ανάγκη να ζήσει οτι δεν πρόλαβε με τον Τζέιμι.
- Άλλες τόσες φορές σκέφτηκα οτι διαβάζω για τις πύλες του ανεξήγητου και οτι ο Τζέιμι, έχει επιστρέψει ως μετενσάρκωση. Μην κρίνεις, τουλάχιστον είμαι ειλικρινής.
- Με άγγιξαν τόσο πολύ τα λόγια της φίλης της και το πόσο δυνατή ήταν εν τέλει η σχέση τους, παρότι είχαν χαθεί για πολλά χρόνια. Ακόμη και εγώ ρε παιδιά βούρκωσα!
- Η πλοκή του βιβλίου, παρόλο το βαρύ θέμα, σε συνεπαίρνει και δεν αισθάνεσαι κατάκοπος βρε αδερφέ καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια που το διαβάζεις. Προσωπικά, δεν ήθελα να το αφήσω από τα χέρια μου μέχρι να δω που θα καταλήξει.

Εν κατακλείδι, για εμένα δεν είναι μόνο ένα βιβλίο αγάπης, είναι πολλά περισσότερα από αυτό. Είναι μια ιστορία για την δύναμη της φιλίας, για την απώλεια και το πένθος, για το πως έχουμε πλάσει την εικόνα των ανθρώπων που αγαπάμε και η συνειδητοποίηση του πως πραγματικά είναι. Θα μπορούσα να συνεχίσω να γράφω και πολλά ακόμη, αλλά θα σε αφήσω να το ζήσεις και να συνδεθείς μαζί τους, όπως έκανα και εγώ.

Neve verliert ihre große Liebe Jamie durch einen Autounfall – den ihre beste Freundin Lara verursacht hat und damit ihre Freundschaft zerreißt. Zehn Jahre später trifft Neve auf Ash, der sie merkwürdigerweise in vielen Hinsichten sehr an Jamie erinnert. Dieser wurde in derselben Nacht von Jamies Tod vom Blitz getroffen und war danach wie ein anderer Mensch – Neve fragt sich jetzt: könnte Jamies Geist in Ashs Körper hinübergewandert sein?

Ein unfassbar bewegendes Buch über Liebe und Freundschaft – mit einigen Wendungen am Ende, die man zunächst nicht erwartet hätte. Die Storyline war für mich zum größten Teil sehr gelungen, wenn auch teilweise etwas langatmig. Neve ist in meinen Augen eine sehr komplizierte Charakterin und hat mich sehr oft stark frustriert, was aber vermutlich auch so gewollt ist. Beim Lesen bekommt man eine wahnsinnige Entwicklung mit – bei Neve selbst und in ihrem Leben.

Die Geschichte von Neve, Ash, Lara und auch Jamie ist keine herkömmliche Liebesgeschichte, sondern hat etwas ganz eigenes an sich. Dieses Buch war auf jeden Fall eine Abwechslung zu denen, die ich sonst so lese.

Ich habe im Nachhinein herausgefunden, dass ich tatsächlich damals schon mal ein Buch von der Autorin gelesen habe, welches ich ebenfalls sehr mochte. Der Schreibstil gefällt mir sehr gut und Charaktere werden sehr intensiv und detailliert beschrieben, sodass man ein gutes Bild von jenen erhält.

Für mich ein Erfolg, jedoch am Ende einen halben Stern Abzug wegen der zwischenzeitlichen Langatmigkeit. Dennoch gibt es von mir 4,5 wohlverdiente Sterne!

In diesem Buch trauert Neve um ihren Freund Jamie, der bei einem Unfall ums Leben gekommen ist, doch als sie dann endlich einen neuen Mann namens Ash trifft, fallen ihr immer mehr Ähnlichkeiten mit ihrem Ex auf, die irgendwann so stark sind, dass es gruselig wird.
Schon von Beginn hat mich das Buch in den Bann gezogen, denn es behandelt ein Thema, das ich so noch nie gelesen habe. An den Schreibstil musste ich mich erst noch gewöhnen, da es oft etwas kompliziert zum Lesen ist. Doch das war am Ende kein Problem mehr.
Von den Charakteren mochte ich vor allem Lara und Ash, wohingegen mich Neve eher genervt hat. Ihre Theorie fand ich von Anfang an eher übertrieben. Doch sie hat sich immer mehr reingesteigert und gar nicht verstanden, dass sie dadurch andere Menschen umso mehr verliert. Das fand ich ein bisschen schade und ich konnte es auch gar nicht nachvollziehen, warum ihr das so wichtig war.
In der Mitte des Buches hat sich alles ein bisschen gezogen, aber gegen Ende wurde es echt nochmal traurig und berührend.
Insgesamt habe ich das Buch sehr gemocht und oft auch in den Momenten dran gedacht, in denen ich nicht gelesen habe, denn das Ende war alles andere als vorhersehbar, also ein gelungener Plottwist.
Ich kann das Buch jedem weiterempfehlen, der gerne mal etwas anderes liest und sich für Bücher interessiert, die mal ein ernsteres Thema behandeln.

Ich habe das Buch sehr geliebt und sofort verschlungen. Die Idee dahinter hat mir sehr gefallen und ich hatte mich gefreut Neve auf die Reise zu begleiten. Ich mochte sie, auch wenn sie mich manchmal etwas enttäuscht hat, da sie von dem Gedanken nicht loskommen konnte das der Geist von Jamie weiterlebt. Denn damit hat sie Ash wehgetan und dieser war wirklich wundervoll. Ash war einer der besten Charaktere im Buch und ich habe immer so mit ihm mitgelitten, wenn Neve dies nicht sehen konnte. Dennoch war dies alles Teil der Geschichte und ich habe es mit Spannung verfolgt. Ich fand es gut, dass sie sich am Ende versöhnt haben, auch wenn dies etwas kurz kam. Doch eigentlich war dieses Buch auch nicht die gemeinsame Reise von Neve und Ash, sondern Neves Reise und wie sie mit dem Tod von Jamie endlich abschließen konnte. Es ist mehr eine Selbstfindung. Daher war es sehr schön, dass sie ihre beste Freundin wiedergefunden hat, auch wenn sie diese leider sofort wiederverloren hat. Ich fand dies wirklich unheimlich traurig und habe sehr viele Tränen vergossen.

Ich kann dieses Buch jedem empfehlen, der ein Fan von Liebesromanen mit viel Drama ist und noch ein paar Taschentücher zuhause hat.

Das Cover gefällt mir von der Farbgebung her sehr gut. Und im indirekten Sinne passt es auch sehr gut zur Geschichte.
Ich habe sehr gut in das Buch hineingefunden und der Schreibstil hat mir unglaublich gut gefallen. Das Buch ist sehr emotional geschrieben und man kann mit Neve auch (meistens) mitfühlen. An Manchen Stellen kamen mir sogar die Tränen. Die Geschichte war auch spannend erzählt, zwar dachte man sich manchmal, bisschen lang vielleicht und genau dann kam etwas, was den Gedanken wieder vertrieben hat. Zum Ende hin, als man dachte, dass es jetzt festgefahren ist und man sich fragt, wie soll das noch eine gute Wendung nehmen, gab es eine überraschende Wendung, die alles nochmal durcheinandergewirbelt hat.
Neve fand ich einen auf den ersten Blick vielleicht recht einfachen Charakter und typisch für einen Liebesroman, auf den zweiten Blick war sie aber doch recht vielschichtig und durch einige unerwartete Begebenheiten hat sich vieles in einem anderen Licht dargestellt, als man ursprünglich dachte. Und auch die anderen Figuren hatten einen interessanten Charakter.
Fazit: Ein hoch emotionales Buch mit unerwartetem Tiefgang.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t sure how I felt for some parts of it, but I think it’s mostly because it’s not so usual to have a heroine who is quite so flawed and actually being the one that is doing the “wrong”. But I did like her and I was glad to see her personal growth, though it was a bit abrupt and the ending was rushed. It could have done with slowing down on that part rather than having as much build up (because by the end of the build up, it’s not really a “big” reveal anymore). But the themes around love and loss, friendship, family and identity and grief were covered in lovely ways, and it managed to keep its light hearted tone (though it made me cringe too many times about Neve’s choices!).

PS. One thing I wish was improved was description of the setting - as someone who moved to Norwich, where the book is set, I could imagine the places mentioned. But if I wasn’t similar, I wouldn’t have understood the magic of places like Wells, for example, there was a missed opportunity to really paint a picture here.

I loved this book! It had me gripped from the start. Neve found the love of her life, Jamie, as a teenager. Everyone said they were too young, but they knew they were in it for life. That is until Jamie is tragically taken from her. Years later, Neve meets Ash, and he not only reminds her of Jamie, but has so many similarities that she questions whether he could actually be some sort of reincarnation of Jamie's spirit.

From the very beginning of the book I was desperate to find out what happened, both to Jamie and Neve in the "then" sections, and with Ash and Neve in the "now" sections. Neve is a flawed character , which I really enjoy, because no one is ever truly perfect. Throw in great supporting characters, not all likeable but all very lovable in their own way, and you've got yourself a cracking book.

Do you believe in reincarnation?

This was an easy read that I flew through. It’s best to go into this one with an open mind as we explore the idea of reincarnation. But see it through!

This is a journey of personal growth, friendship, dealing with grief, love and betrayal. The further we get into the story the more flawed the main character becomes, and I found this an intriguing development as we explore the human mind, and how we develop and change over time.

This is very much a book that puts across the importance of living in the now and how dwelling on the past can really hold us back.

This book gripped me from the beginning.
I don't usually like past and present temse books, but something about having all these unsolved questions gripped me. ☺️
This touched on very real-life events, friendships, relationships, and trauma. It had my crying pretty much the entire way through the book. 🥹
People turned out to be the opposite of what I originally thought, and others better than I was led to believe.
This was such an emotional read, which I was definitely in need of.
The chapter legnths were on the longer side, but I didn't mind it, actually. The writing style was perfect. This book was beautifully written. 🥰

I really enjoyed this book because I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out what exactly happened. How did Jamie die? Why was there a falling out with Lara? How do Jamie’s and Ash’s lives mesh together?

Although a romance, it greatly touches on the subject of friendship, forgiveness and moving on from past hurt/betrayal.

Trigger warnings: miscarriage, death, cancer.

Honestly I would have given this 5 stars but the abrupt ending had me like… WT-actual-F!???

Have the tissues ready, curl up by the fire and you're in for a treat.
Loved the characters. It's set in Norfolk, which the author plainly knows well and her descriptions are spot on.
Neve and Jamie were teenage sweethearts, the couple voted 'most likely to marry' in their school year book. But Jamie died in a car accident.
Years later, Neve meets Ash, who at first seems to be so similar to Jamie, it's uncanny. He had survived being struck by lightning and when he woke, his whole personality changed. The coincidence was it happened on the same night as Jamie's accident.

Loved it!

I was a bit worried this was going to be too far fetched but I was hooked from the first page and read it in one go.

A story of twists and turn, love and heartache. A romance book that also highlights the importance of non romantic love and friendships.

I really liked the jumping between past and present in the book.

On the face of it, you might assume this is primarily a story about love and the romantic relationships involved in the story, but it's actually much more about friendship and grief (and these were the parts I actually really liked, and thought were done really well). I don't think I actually liked the main character much, but the characters were all really well developed overall. I loved Lara - heartbroken at the ending for her 😢

I cannot express how much I loved this book! I'm still not over it, despite finishing it last week. I loved the characters, the way it flipped back and forth in time, the friendships and relationships between characters, the way dysfunctional and honest families are portrayed. I can't do it enough justice but I didn't want to put it down and it will always stick with me. I had tears at the end, it made me feel every emotion possible.
