"Get straight to the heart of Edinburgh"

In general, the Lonely Planet "pocket" guide series to cities around the world is excellent and provides top rate suggestions for trip ideas, trip planning and both selection and de-selection of what tourist sites, art galleries, museums, churches, restaurants, bars, shopping malls and so on would be to your particular taste. Although the proof is in the pudding and my planned 2020 summer trip has yet to take place, I'm sure POCKET EDINBURGH will not be the first exception to my generally favourable impression.

Two fairly significant downfalls that I did discover, however. First, the tear out map of the entire city covers a much too small area of the central city and, as a result, some major attractions don't appear on the map and are not referenced as being outside of the boundary shown (Craigmillar Castle, Leith and the Maid of the Forth boat tour come quickly to mind). Secondly, the very common tourist idea of bulk discount tickets for tourist attractions like museums and art galleries or subways and surface transportation is glossed over to the extent of being completely ignored.

Recommended but weaker than its sister publications such as POCKET GLASGOW, POCKET MADRID or POCKET BERLIN.

This is extremely helpful for planning! This guide explains the neighborhoods, offers a lot of dining, bar, and shop recommendations, and highlights cultural stops and sights to add to your to-do list. I’m most looking forward to the walking trails. It all looks so beautiful.

I find myself visiting Edinburgh on the way to and from places ... namely St Andrews for my son's two year stint at the university and, most recently, his make-up graduation. The city deserves more time! This visit, I hiked Arthur's Seat, which I highly recommend, took in some great local music, and dined at one of my favorite UK restaurants, The Devil's Advocate. YUM!

Yes, another travel book... arm chair traveling before the real trip? This one added something new, still. Glad I checked it out.

Good, but Fodor's was more useful for getting about in the big cities.

Some of this information might be a little out of date due to Covid-19, however it was great to refresh my memory of Edinburgh's layout.

Great little guide. Exactly what I was looking for. Extremely useful to use as a launch pad for further research. It's helpful to keep sticky tabs, a highlighter and a note card with you while you go through it to keep notes and help plan your trip. The maps throughout the book are clear and helpful and the fold out map at the end of the book is perfect for navigating the city. The little historical notes throughout the book help give context for the places the book talks about. This little guide will be with me in my carry on and used throughout my trip.

I highly recommend getting this pocket guide to Edinburgh! It was the only guide book I used, and the map I followed when I went there for four days. It gives you details of the attractions, prices, location, buses to take in order to get there. I found it very easy to read. It's definitely worth investing in before you go to the city!

Lonely Planet Pocket Edinburgh is a great size travel guide. There is a pull out city map in the back. Published in 2023 insures that the information is up to date after Covid closings. Most importantly is a list of best places to see depending on the number of days available to the visitor.
If a small carry size travel guide meets the reader's needs, this is a good choice.

Handy pocket guide to Edinburgh, but maybe I should have bought the full size edition rather than the pocket version. I could have done with more history and facts than lots about where to eat and drink.

It’s pretty good and detailed enough guide book. Also nicely organized in sections about each part of the city, which makes it easy to navigate and look for things you are interested in.
