There’s always that one guy. You know the one, when you're around him, he makes your palms sweat. Your knees shake. And you mess up your words. For Tommy Golde, that’s how Evan made him feel. Tommy's an attractive guy in his 20s who works at an ice cream parlor. He’d dated guys before, and he was pretty confident when talking to guys. But with Evan, it was different. Weirdly different. And around the time he started seeing Evan, Tommy felt he was being followed. And what was with the weird shadow that appeared out of nowhere? When it got to be too creepy, Tommy trusted his friends and co-worker to help him find out who was stalking him and why. But in the back of his mind, Tommy began to wonder if his trust was misplaced? Could one of the people he asked for help be the one behind it?
It's been an absolute blast! This book is so damn good.
Everybody who loves Stephen King's psychological-mystery-suspense-horror thrillers should read this. You'll devour this and absolutely love it. I'll buy you a cheesecake (once you've read the book, you'll know) if not.
It was both fun and creepy. Loved it. It’s a quick paced story with lots of lovely characters, gay men falling in love, creepy stalkers and fuckery going around. Lots of ice cream talk too. I wouldn’t be against more with all of them 😭!
The title, cover and the first few pages lead you to think you're in a cute little romance--but things get ominous pretty quickly. The book is actually a first rate mystery/suspense. I came very close to missing my subway stop while reading the very tense last chapters. Highly recommended.
Cherry on Top follows Tommy Golde as he navigates falling head over heels for a nerdy boy he meets at the local costume store. Part of this navigation involves a stalker, paranormal type activity, and a plot to ….. well you’ll have to read to find out what THAT is all about.
This is not a normal RomCom, this is a story that involves lots of cuteness interspersed with some real WHAT THE FUCK moments. There are near death events, stalkers, and suspenseful dates. It left me going round and round in circles as I tried to figure out who is trying to harm my lovely Tommy and his new boo-thing Evan.
Lucas really outdoes himself with this engaging and delightfully cute/suspenseful tale of finding love and all of the crazy shit that can happen in the world. As I read books, I tend to live post my reactions on Threads, and the only reactions I could post at the end were the “Holy What The Fuck Shit” posts as I was whiplashed into finding out who was behind it all.
Overall this is an excellent tale being told by Lucas Delrose and I am really looking forward to reading more from him
This book was a lot of fun and a great quick read! I enjoyed the characters and the spooky mystery of it was fun as well. I definitely recommend it for a weekend read.
The only thing I didn’t love about it was the final chapter. And it’s not even that big of a deal as it’s more of an epilogue situation. But I didn’t love the conclusion being a throuple. The whole book centers around Tommy pursuing Evan just to end with them including Tommy’s ex-boyfriend into their relationship. After everything, that just felt unfair to Evan. He deserved better than being relegated to a third wheel.
I had no idea what was in store when I started reading! I thought it was going to be fluffy and cute and BAM came the thriller elements. I enjoyed it! The voice was great and Tommy was a really good narrator. It made the story pretty fast-paced and easy to get through. I found the back and forth at the beginning with which date it was a little confusing, but once that got sorted and the plot got rolling, I had a good time!
Lucas is a friend and I got to beta read Cherry on Top for him!
It's a fun, campy horror story with a bit of spice thrown in for good measure. The romance is adorable and the characters are all likeable. The mystery is very well laid out and will keep you guessing until the big reveal. And then you get to the very end and... well, its superb!
I adore this book. If you like campy horror and cute romance, I would highly recommend.
Cherry on Top has it all! A funny, somewhat clueless MC, an adorable boyfriend, and a suspenseful whodunnit. While it was a little chaotic at times, I throughly enjoyed this standalone. I wish it was book one in a series! Can’t wait for more books from Lucas!
When I read the blurb for this book I thought it was going to be a cute romance book. While it is that, there is also an added mystery component as well. Which was surprising in a good way! I adored the sweetness of Tommy and Evan together, they are so cute together! I also appreciated how their relationship developed slowly and took their time getting to know one another gradually. It was honestly so cute reading about the thoughtfulness of their dates, and how they got so excited talking to each other and just being near one another.
I did like the mystery aspect of this and for the most part I do think it was written pretty well. My only critique is how the chapters that were in the 'future' switched to the present tense, it got a bit confusing at times, but that's really just a minor critique. The twist with Andy was unexpected but I loved it!!! Something else I really loved and enjoyed is how this book isn't full of spicy scenes, its full of cute dates, and intimate moments, yes, but it isn't focused on the spice which I liked! Overall a great sweet story!
Cherry on Top but Lucas DelRose is a book that was on my shelves for too long (sorry friend). Based of the bubblegum pink cover I didn’t realize I’d get a fun and creepy mystery! Tommy works at the local ice cream parlor and hasn’t had the best of luck when it comes to the boyfriend department that is until he meets Evan. Things are off to a great start, filled with coy looks, flirting and stalkers? Someone doesn’t want these two together and will stop at nothing until that’s done. There’s a great found family aspect to this book as well that I found enjoyable and heartwarming. I really liked the relationships that prevail throughout the story as well as their banter. I had a good time trying to figure this one out and had my suspicions of nearly everyone lol
This was a fun read, and a great thriller. My favourite thing about the book were the clearly defined characters, all with distinct personalities and relationships to each other. Very believeable people. The pacing was mostly ok, though I wasn't a huge fan of the story jumping around the timeline in the first half of the book... though in the second half, the story unfolded very satisfactorily. There was noticeable amount of telling rahter than showing, but this may be more to the very easy going first person perspective of the story- I really enjoyed the casual style. Highly recommend this book for a quick thrill!
It's a fun, campy horror story with a bit of spice thrown in for good measure. The romance is adorable and the characters are all likeable. The mystery is very well laid out and will keep you guessing until the big reveal.
I adore this book. If you like campy horror and cute romance, I would highly recommend.
I'm sure this is the book for somebody but unfortunately it's not for me. Reading the phrase, "but the slurs between a bunch of friends don't faze me as much", while the main character is sitting around with a bunch of straight guys at a college party isn't really my cup of tea. I wasn't vibing when the straight roommate was throwing out homophobic slurs earlier in the book but I thought maybe it would be addressed or something. Maybe it is addressed later in the book? But I'm not invested enough to find out at this moment. The author seems like a really lovely person but this writing isn't for me. I can't really bring myself to analyze and put down the rest of my complaints in the book after this bit of it. Coming from a gay trans man, I don't want to see the normalization of "letting straight people say slurs because you're buddies".
This book was so good. The mystery element had me hooked. The romance was perfect. I loved so many of the characters. Tommy was the perfect main, lots of little insecurities that made me connect with him as a reader, but not so many it seemed unrealistic. As he begins to fall for Evan, the reader follows suit. Everyone is a suspect but I have to say the climax of the story was a bit of a surprise. Oh, and the end? I loved it and thought the title was perfect. I just fell in love again. I'm probably going to be thinking and talking about this one for a while.
I loved this story. Lucas writes in a way that makes you have feelings toward the character. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of Tommy. It’s easy to root for him. Tommy is so witty, there are so many points that I put down the book laughing.
As I read this book on the airplane, so many people were enticed by the cover art. It started a little plane book club in my row!
I’m impressed by the author’s writing and can’t wait to read more from him!
This book genuinely had me flipping pages so fast and peeking ahead sometimes... This is a fun, swift read that is great for a commute, the beach, or a lazy afternoon on the couch. Cherry on Top balances cute romance with thriller very nicely. Read it!
