The Last Buckaroo

Rate this book
When Katie Peck went west in 1912 to find her very own cowboy she hadn't a clue it would take her seven years to lasso him. This is a charming and suspenseful story of how determined a woman can be once she knows what she wants - especially when she's a spitfire redhead.

Except for a few rude sexual comments at the end of chapter 20, this book would fall into my Sweet category. It's not technically a romance in my opinion, but a end of the era Western murder trial. With exception mentioned above, I really enjoyed the kangaroo court and slap stick comedy of the escapade!
The narration was exceedingly loud in moments as the characters yelled their objections in court, or similar situations. While if a movie this would have been expected, as an audiobook with or without headphones it was too much. But I did appreciate her emotional outbursts for adding authenticity to the scenes. Most of the actual narrating of the story seemed stifled in its rhythm, Katie didn't have seem to have the same issues.

The first three fourths of this book was amazing. Loved it! It was like a favorite episode of Gunsmoke.

Yancey is maybe the last buckaroo. That's what Katie calls him anyway. He fancies Katie and Katie fancies him. Then the town's least favorite person is murdered and the sheriff thinks Yancey did it. Katie has to do everything she can to save him or else he's going to hang.

The last fourth of the book feels like it was tacked on. Almost like someone else wrote it. After basically making the sheriff out to be a bastard; now they forgive him. I'm not against how Katie and Yancey's story turned out, it just didn't seem like it matched.

This was a great read, whether you like westerns, romance, mystery or history you can find all inside the pages of this novel. Yancey Burke is the last of a dying breed in 1919. The last buckaroo has made his way to Montana is search of old times but instead finds himself in jail accused of murdering Clyde Banyon. A fellow who wasn't too well liked, but Yancey didn't kill him and it will take a lot of work especially by Katie Peck, to try and get Yancey's name cleared.

I enjoyed this book! Set at the end of the cowboy era, a true cowboy is framed for murder and the efforts of a female bartender are his only hope. A quick and easy read this ebook takes the reader back to the time of western dime store novels.

Maybe not so much for the romance, more of Katie's trying to find justice for Yancey.
