Having written my own books which are soon to start coming out, I’ve also been reading more fiction these days than in many years.
And it feels great when you find an author who gets it – how to tell a story that hits all the notes for what the author is trying to do. From the very title itself and on through the end of the book, Nothing Ever Happens on Main Street delivers.
It is fast-paced, fun, lively, and intriguing. You never feel confused, and always are interested to see what happens next. The dialogue and description are fun, enjoyable, and appropriate to the time period, and the plot moves along at a consistent pace, building up in intensity as our gang of characters learns more and more about the mysterious device they learn about, and the threat posed by a couple rogue businessmen who want to use it for evil. The internal story logic is well-thought out and there are no glaring holes or inconsistencies.
Only one time did I start to worry the story might bog down into something episodic, and then the very next chapter upped the stakes and the story kept moving.
I also wanted it to deal with some of the thornier questions raised by its unique approach to time travel. At first, it seemed to be avoiding them altogether, but as the story progresses, the questions raised by the time travel technology they’re working with get addressed as a key part of the story. Is it wise or right, or even beneficial, to be using this the way we’re using it?
Are bad things always something we should want to prevent from happening, or should we just let life go, even when it doesn’t go well? Is controlling fate a good thing, even when the outcome seems good?
The story, written in first-person, introduces us to Parker Riley, a teen-ish boy in the early 1900s in a fictional small town. The author does very well in putting us back in that time, featuring details of daily living that make you feel like you’re there, and this is achieved in the first chapter – where it should be – while also getting the story going right away.
Parker soon meets Cora, a young and brand new widow, and her teen daughter Cassandra. As Parker gets feelings for Cassandra and happily takes them around his town, they meet a stranger character named Doyle who Parker later learns possesses a device that allows him to turn back time – but only for himself and only for limited amounts of time.
It’s enough time to prevent mistakes and tragedies, and this is what Doyle’s been doing. But when Parker accidentally discovers Doyle’s secret, the cat is out of the bag, and Doyle has to let Parker into his world.
From there, the adventure begins, and it keeps going strong through the rest of the book, including the eventual showdown with a couple shady villains out to use the time travel tech for their own ends.
It’s a delightful story, and I found it quite refreshing after reading a couple duds previous to this. Even better, I then gave it to my 10 year old son, and he loved it, finishing the whole thing in a couple days.
If you want a well-crafted story that’s fun, crisp, creative, and also clean enough to share with any age, Nothing Ever Happens on Main Street is a great find.

The power of the Regulator seems handy until you see the toll it’s had on Edison. But as soon as he decides to give up using the Regulator, the biggest catastrophe happens and Edison desperately tries to put everything back as if nothing happened. I loved this book!
They tried to explain how the Regulator worked, and I’m not sure I grasped it. But the story otherwise was well thought out!

For a town where nothing ever happens, there sure is a lot going on! I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in quite a long time. Engaging right from page one, the author quickly establishes the world and then builds and rebuilds it with chronological ambiguity! You won’t want to put it down!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It said YA but I would lean more toward middle grade. Maybe the “harder” scientific terms brings the scale up. I don’t know. It was full of adventure and time travel. I’d recommend if you want an easy but adventure filled read!

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed Nothing Ever Happens on Main Street by Daren Hatfield! Part Ray Bradbury Americana, part Back to the Future, all fun. I really enjoyed this confection; hope to see more from this author. (Smashing cover, too!)
