I really enjoyed this final installment of the Trilogy.
At the start of the book, I struggled to remember the events of book two, so I definitely think readers coming into this book without having read the previous two would find it difficult to follow. It's definitely not a standalone, readers really need to read the first books- but they are brilliant!
I think this was a great finish to the story, and I could see the writing development from the author as the books progressed. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next! I'd read them all.

Thank you to Leané Gilomee, Joffe Books and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for a honest review!

Once Upon a Crown, the final installment in Leané Giliomee’s Twisted Crown Trilogy, delivers a satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion to the series. Building upon the foundations laid in “If the Crown Fits” and “Crown of Hearts”, this book brings the journey of Elara and Prince Cai to a compelling close.

Giliomee continues to excel in character development, allowing Elara to evolve into a strong and multifaceted protagonist. Her internal struggles and growth are portrayed with nuance, making her journey both relatable and inspiring. The dynamic between Elara and Cai remains a highlight, with their relationship deepening amidst the challenges they face.

The narrative maintains a brisk pace, weaving together political intrigue, personal stakes, and the remnants of magic in a world striving for balance. While some plot points could have benefited from more elaboration, the story's momentum keeps readers engaged. The resolution ties up key arcs while leaving room for reflection on the characters' journeys.

Overall, Once Upon a Crown is a commendable finale that balances romance, adventure, and personal growth. Fans of the series will find it a rewarding conclusion, and newcomers are encouraged to start from the beginning to fully appreciate the depth of this enchanting trilogy. 👑✨💛

This is the third and final book in The Twisted Crown trilogy and I have to say that I'm so pleased that I've been able to discover this series just at the end - as I actually have read all 3 books over the last 7 months.

Not quite binged reading, but pretty close to it for me!

Each book has left us on a cliffhanger and I was so excited that I could dive into this final installment and discover both what happened next after we left everyone with that big reveal!

Obviously, after that, we do follow straight on from where we left off and join Elara and Cainat a pivotal moment where they must decide between heart and duty.

Having lost everything, they need to find a way to save their Kingdoms from the absolute battle ahead with Aries.

This was a other brilliant but emotional read which had me on edge throughout hoping and wishing that everything would work out well for our main characters.

I loved that this was told through all four pov's which allowed us to see all of the events and actions from different view points and that really highlighted the consequences of each action across the kingdoms.

The whole storyline flowed on seamlessly again and the final coming together for the conclusion was so well worked through, encompassing all that we've learned from the beginning.

Beautifully written and a joy to read from start to finish - definitely one to read as a complete series though!

Would love to see more from this author in the future.

Once upon a crown by Leanne Gilliomee.
Twisted crown trilogy book 3.
Oh my word. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love this series. I loved Cai and Elara. How they were with each other. I loved the writing style and the story. I read this in a few days. I just couldn't put it down. It felt like I was there with them watching everything happening. It's a shame this is the last book of this series as I would've loved it to carry on. I would definitely recommend this series. 1

My Initial Thoughts
After the way Giliomee broke my heart in the second book, I was eager to get stuck into the third and final instalment of The Twisted Crown series. Firstly again the cover is stunning and it draws your attention. Once I reminded myself what had happened previously, I was drawn straight back into the throws of war, and this time Gwen and Lance as well as Elara and Cai had POVs so it felt like to coinciding tales in one.
Plot
Oh I loved this one, I think its definitely my favourite of the series and there is drama, danger and intense feelings throughout. I enjoyed the development of the characters and overall the wrapping up of this series and it really does end on a high, making all the death, heart break and broken characters, worth it, maybe.. there is still characters I cant forget nor forgive Giliomee…. Why make such loveable characters and then poof…..
Characters
I love the characters in this whole series, but this one I really enjoyed the development and growth of Lance.. yes you read that right.. Lance!
Elara really steps up to her role as queen and its empowering to see such a strong willed FMC at the centre of the storyline. Cai became the withdrawn exiled king and needed to grow back into his character. I loved the fact that there was still the side characters from the previous books there to still steal your heart.
Recommend
If you’re a romantasty lover, although I wouldn’t say its to much fantasy only the odd the element. Saving kingdoms and thrones then you should dive into this now completed trilogy.
Favourite Quote
“You saved my life once. You pulled me back from death. And I will go to hell and back to find you.”
Favourite Chapter/s
My favourite chapters were 6, 21, 25 and 34.
Summed up in one sentence
The perfect ending to the dangerous, heartbreaking romantasy trilogy, and your heart will get shattered again.
Overall Wrap up of the series.
As this is the last book in the trilogy this wrap will be of the series as a whole. If I ranked them in order of how each book was for me it would be.
1 – Once Upon A Crown – Book 3.
2 – If The Crown Fits – Book 1.
3 – Crown Of Hearts – Book 2.
I really enjoyed the development of the characters throughout the series and how love for them grows or detest for them feasters. Elara was absolutely the FMC every one needs, and even when she doubted herself she remained strong for everyone else. The side characters throughout the books really become family for Elara and Giliomee has an truly epic way of building her characters up to then destroy them. I found my heart being absolutely shattered into pieces, mended together and then shattered again and I found myself screaming why and nooo! Sobbing into my pillow and an hour when I should be sleeping.

📚✨A finale full of angst, ancient secrets & chaotic royalty ✨👑

Okay, babes. So I finally finished Once Upon a Crown – the big, dramatic finale to The Twisted Crown Trilogy – and I’ve got THOUGHTS. Like... grab a snack and a goblet of wine because we need to unpack this 📖🍷

Was it the fantasy breakup-make-up reunion of the year? Not quite. But did it give me feels, heartbreak, 🔥 tension and high-stakes betrayal? Absolutely.
___________

🖤 The Vibe:

We’re back with our chaos duo — Elara, our fierce queen clinging to power by the thinnest thread, and Cai, the fallen king turned brooding exile (ugh, we love a haunted man in a cloak). Their dynamic? Full-on “I hate you but, I love you and I’d burn the world down for you” levels of intensity 🔥
"I will never leave you. You saved my life once. You pulled me back from death. And I will go to hell and back to find you."
– CAI, PLEASE 😭
_____________

⚔️ What I Loved:

→ Lance. Freaking. Deserved. This.
Never thought I’d be saying this, but 🏆 props to Lance. Our man stepped UP. His arc with Gwen was surprisingly tender and gave the book some much-needed softness and balance. Like thank you for bringing actual romance into the romantasy, sir. 👏💖

→ The found family vibes were ON.
The side characters? I was clutching my heart with every scene because Leané does not care about your emotional wellbeing 😩. Death toll? Brutal. My tears? Endless.

→ The plot? Ancient diary scavenger hunt + cursed relics + blurred lines between myth and truth = very Throne of Glass meets Powerless energy. I was so here for the stakes.

→ Favourite quote attack:
"I'd never really had anything in my life worth dying for ... until now."
– Elara. BABY. MY HEART. 💔
_______________

😩 What Didn’t Hit:

→ Cai and Elara... pls stop yelling 😭
The lovers-to-strangers-to-lovers trope was TROPING. Like... they were at each other's throats 75% of the time. I get it, the tension is supposed to be sizzling... but I was this close to dragging them into couple’s therapy myself.
"If you don't tell me where she is, I will not hesitate to beat you beyond recognition. I've been thinking about it for a while actually."
– Cai to Lance. Bro. Unhinged. 😂

→ The pacing felt a bit off.
Some chapters were slowwww, then suddenly everything was happening at once and boom, it’s the end. I needed a bit more time to breathe through the climax and resolution. The epilogue was a sweet touch, but I wanted more time with the aftermath. I mean, we just fought for three whole books — GIVE ME MY HAPPILY EVER AFTER PAGES.
______________

👑 Final Thoughts:

Was it a perfect finale? No. But was it satisfying? For the most part, yes. It gave me closure, some iconic lines, and the feeling that maybe – just maybe – the crown won this time.
"It was sobering to realise, once again, that you could know someone your entire life and still know nothing about them."
– Elara… girl, why you gotta call us out like that 💀

3.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐✨
A solid end to a gripping trilogy, but could’ve used a little more heart, a little less bickering, and maybe... like, a group hug?? Just once?? 🫂😂

Still, if you're into chaotic royal romances, ancient secrets, and girls who rule both hearts and kingdoms, give this trilogy a go 💅👑

Thank you so much to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

Here is my review for Once Upon A Crown by Leane Giliomee

This is the third book in the trilogy which has been such a gripping and intriguing story that I have been hooked right from the very first book. The story starts in the first book and concludes in this book. Elara is a brilliant character. She is Queen of Everness but she isn’t actually married to Cai, King of Norrandale who has been exiled so the council aren’t sure about following the Queen’s orders. Cai is not coming out of his room but eventually Elara goes to him and lets him know he is needed. Together they work to find the diary which could lead them to the magic stones. I got into this story straight away right from the start of the book. The story is brilliantly written and the characters are superb. Some are sneaky and sly as they can’t be trusted. Also, some have been in all three books. I like the storyline and the plot works really well. I have been invested in reading all three books and loved them all. I found I couldn’t put the book down as I wanted to know what happened next. I liked the author's writing style and I found it really easy to follow.

Blurb :

A fallen king. A hunted queen. Bound by fate, divided by war.

I'd never really had anything in my life worth dying for . . . Until now.

As an enemy sweeps through the mountains in search of a legendary power, Queen Elara of Everness rules a fractured realm. Her grip on power is fragile, and her heart is caught between duty and the haunted king who once vowed to fight by her side.

Once the proud king of Norrandale, Cai is now an exile. He has lost everything . . . except her.

Elara and Cai’s only hope is a lost diary, said to have belonged to the first king of Everness. Within its pages are answers buried in ancient magic, cursed relics and a war that never truly ended. If they can find it, it could mean the difference between life and death.

In a world where legend and truth collide, the fate of two kingdoms — and one forbidden love — hangs in the balance.

And the crown will demand the greatest sacrifice of all.

Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, The Veiled Kingdom, Powerless, Spark of the Everflame, A Kiss of Iron and The Cruel Prince.

Tropes:
🗡 Found family
🗡 Sizzling tension 🗡🌶
🗡 Lovers-to-strangers-to-lovers
🗡 Badass FMC
🗡 High-stakes political intrigue
🗡 We support women's rights and women's wrongs
🗡 Grumpy x sunshine

ARC review, this is my honest opinion.

What an ending to the trilogy. If you are reading this and haven't checked the previous books please do so, this review will mention some details of the previous books as well. Because if there's something I love about this book is how the author connects scenes across the trilogy.

That's for me the strongest point of Leané's writing, there's a talk between Elara and Lance that makes you remember how they met, their first talk in private and how their relationships works around making deals with each other. In a similar way, there's also a scene between Cai and Elara that also makes me remember the first book when he was treating her wounds. I loved those details because it made it all feel so consistent, connected and it was just a great reward.

In this book Lance's character has way more development and I liked seeing how he evolves, even more since I think the author makes an amazing job during the rest of the books at making you feel that he's not really that bad. Although it's true I felt part of his plot stopped the pacing of the book a little bit, but I liked reading it a lot.

There are some minor points I didn't like, some parts of the plot are obvious from page one, and the final part feels very rushed compared with the rest of the book. I feel there are also some things that could be used to create a more interesting plot or a twist, mostly because to me they feel like they don't make a lot of sense, as if the author was planning on doing something but then didn't. It's not a big thing, but was confusing, even more because it's related to Cai's behaviour. But besides that, I appreciated Cai's character a lot in this book and what a good representation it does of someone dealing with losing their loved ones and maybe even some depression. Some of Cai's parts really resonated with me.

In general I strongly recommend reading this trilogy and while the second book felt slower to read this one quite makes up for it.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

In the final book of the Twisted Crown Trilogy, Elara rules a fractured realm, while Cai, once the king of Norrandale, is now in exile. He has lost everything.....except her. As a relentless enemy sweeps through the mountains in search of a legendary power,, Elara & Cai's only hope of survival is a lost diary, said to have belonged to the first king of Everness. The diary is supposed to hold answers buried in ancient magic, cursed relics and a war that never truly ended. If they can find it, it could change everything.

I really wish the author had included a synopsis at the beginning that summed up the previous two books. I had to go back and read my reviews in order to refresh my memory, because I was completely lost until I did. So, this is definitely not a a standalone, and they do need to be read in order! In the first book of the trilogy, it begins with Elara acting as a female Robinhood, stealing from the rich to help the poor. She is hired to steal something from the Prince. Cai is the prince from the rival kingdom, who is supposed to marry the princess in the Kingdom of Everness.. Cai & Elara end up falling in love with each other. In book 2, Elara is trying to navigate a court filled with deceit, assassination attempts and dangerous alliances.. She knows in order to survive, she must make a bargain to marry King Cai of Norrandale. With enemies closing in on every side and the threat of war looming on the horizon, Elara has to figure out how much she is willing to risk to ensure the fate of her kingdom, without her heart getting destroyed in the process. This final book ties everything up nicely, with a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoy fantasy fiction then I definitely suggest you check out this series!

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for an e-arc of this book.

I have received arcs for all 3 books of this series. Book 1 started really strong for me, book 2 took a step back but overall still good. However, book 3 here fell a little flat for me, and I hate saying that.

It feels like all the fun and witty banter we got in book 1 disappeared further into the series. It didn’t even feel like Elara and Cai were the central couple anymore. To be honest, I enjoyed Lance and Gwen’s chapters a lot more and their story. There was way more chemistry between these 2 this book than Elara and Cai.

After the shocking ending to book 2, I was eagerly anticipating this last book. The story wraps up and everything for sure but it almost felt like everything fell into the character’s laps too easily. Everything got solved so quickly at times.

The relationship between Elara and Cai completely dropped off for me too. They both are going through their various trials and own grief, which I think is important, but outside of 1 scene of them fighting/redeclaring their love for one another, they very much fell into their roles of royalty vs being in love. And when I finally thought we were going to build towards some sort of spicy scene, it felt very brushed over. Not even in a closed door way. It just…didn’t even feel there at all.

Overall, the series started really strong in my opinion but felt like it lost its way by book 3. I thank the publisher for the opportunity to read all 3 as arcs!

The crowning glory 👑 ✨ 🏔️

This is the third book in the Twisted Crown Trilogy and for me, the best. Queen Elara and King Cai are in the Kingdom of Everness, licking their wounds and strategising on how to defeat King Aries and avoid war. Norrandale is still in the hands of those loyal to King Aries. Cai is broken-hearted after losing his Kingdom and Elara is desperately trying to find ways to connect to him again. They still love each other, but Cai is in a very dark place.

Elara and Cai follow leads on Myrgonite artefacts and hunt for an old and ancient journal from King Elvin. This search leads to adventure and magic and the opportunity, or alternatively curse, that these relics contain. My favourite quote is as follows:

“But magic requires balance, and we don’t know the price.”

In this novel, Leane introduces a new sub plot, a romance between Gwen, disgraced Thatcher’s sister and Prince Lance, Elara’s brother. I really enjoyed this romance which gave me the feels, almost like when reading ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ by Sarah J Maas, just not so much depth.

An excellent third and final book to this series. All the ends are sewn up and the reader enjoys romance, action and adventure. Well recommended and great to see how the story and characters evolved.

Thank you NetGalley, Joffe Books and Leane Giliomee for access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Due to be published 24 June 2025.

Once Upon a Crown is the final book in the Twisted Crown trilogy but Leane Giliomee and I've been waiting on this book since I read the last page of book two. If you haven't read the other books and plan on reading this series, you'll want to stop reading this review because I don't want to spoil it for you and while I won't spoil this book, there is potential to do so for the others.

This one picks up shortly after book two wrapped up. Cai is initially a bit of a mess in that he doesn't know what to do now that his kingdom is lost and Elara is trying to figure out a way to bring him back. A lot of the initial time is spent focusing on finding an old journal of King Evrin and once they have that and Cai is slightly more himself, they decide they need to stop King Aries and will start with getting back Norrandale. As the story progresses, the magic of the Myrgonite plays a big role.

There is also the new romance between Gwen and Lance that we get to see develop and I have to admit it was nice to see a different side of Lance in this book - he actually showed some feelings!

The eventual fight with King Aries played out well and I won't give anything away here. I'll just say that the story is wrapped up in a way that, while not everyone survives the war, you know that there is a future for these kingdoms. If you're looking for a new fantasy trilogy to pick up that has some magic, adventure, and romance, consider picking this one up. I enjoyed it and think you might too.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Grande Finale to Twisted Crown Trilogy.

The long awaited part three to the Crown series. Following the shock and cliffhanger from book 2 where Cai's best friend and almost brother reveals himself as a traitor and murders Cai's mother in front of his eyes, King Cai is seeking revenge.
The future of Queen Elara and King Cai hangs in the balance, and their kingdoms are under threat from the Kingdom of Argon, as King Aries and his vast army are on the march. Aries has learned from his spies that Cai and Elara have a secret weapon, the all-powerful magic forged into three Myrgonite jewels. Cai is in exile as Aries has captured his palace and is searching for the jewels and the Myrgonite mines.
Can the two learn the secrets of the jewels and how to tame them before Aries manages to capture their power?
This is a great story of daring deeds ,romance, and magic. Although this is a trilogy, I'm left wishing for more!

The final instalment of the Twisted Crown Trilogy was in a word epic. I have to say I have loved this series from book one and I have to say unlike some series and trilogies the story, action and characters have been consistent throughout. I have loved following the journey of Elara and Cai and the trails they have faced. There is a brilliant balance between action and romance. Elara is badass and it’s impossible to not love her. Cai is brilliant too, but I will say Elara really shone through for me.
I loved how Gilomee takes tropes but makes them their own throughout. I never felt ‘this has been done before’ or ‘I’ve read something like this before’. It all felt fresh, well written and well developed.
If you love high stacks fantasy romance with a nice mix of political intrigue and action this trilogy is the one for you.
As always thank you to Zooloo’s Book Tours for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.

I’ve been reading this since June. For me, that’s an eternity - especially when I usually devour books in days, or a week for chunky fantasies. I want to care. I want to know how it ends, especially after loving the earlier books in the series. But Elara and Cai just feel dull. They lack the spark that makes me eager to pick up the book, and that’s a real shame.

The only bright spots? Lance and Gwen. Their sharp, sarcastic dynamic and Gwen’s ability to hold her own gave me energy every time they appeared. Without them, I’d have struggled even more.

For now, I’m setting this aside. DNF at 49%. But I hate not finishing a story, so I’ll likely return someday when I’m in the right mood. Until then, this one just couldn’t hold my attention.

Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the ARC. This is my honest opinion.

A huge thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of this book!
Before starting this, I hadn’t realized it was the third book in a series I hadn’t yet read. As a result, I felt a bit lost at first, though I was able to pick up the general gist of the previous events. I won’t go into details of the book here, but I do appreciate when a series offers some context at the beginning—not just for new readers, but also for those returning after a long gap between releases. Serious readers often read dozens of books in between, and it’s easy to forget key plot points. That aside, the book is well written and enjoyable. While it may not be the most groundbreaking story, it’s a solid read and a pleasant way to pass the time.

Thank you Netgalley, Joffe Books, and Leané Gilomee for sending me this advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was the final book in the series, and honestly the best of the three!

The pacing was way better in this one compared to the other two. The beginning was a little slow though, but the pace picks up quickly. The politics didn't bog it down, and there was a good amount of action. Several really good twists and turns in there too to keep you happy, and a lot more tension.

The slow burn romance finally paid off, and it was so worth it!

The ending was a bit bittersweet, but really well done.

This lovely fantasy novel is part of a three part series which again I had no idea was a series so again this review will be very brief. Our main heroine Elara is doing her best to run her kingdom all while balancing her love for an exiled royal Cai. Danger seems to lurk everywhere in the Kingdom. Overall this book was pretty impressive. I'll definitely need to get my hand on the other two books so that way I don't feel so lost and confused. Again wonderful book.
I received an arc copy from Netgalley and all opinions are of my own.

In the final explosive novel in the Twisted crown trilogy we see more intrigue and politics, plotting and the search for the Myrgonite objects intensifies.
Victory may be within grasp but Elara knows the cost will be high and there will be many more personal sacrifices before peace is reached.
Apart from the battlegrounds, Elara needs to look inside herself as she too carries secrets and hidden dangers.
In a satisfying and bloody conclusion can we finally see peace between the kingdoms and it's rulers?
A great fantasy read.

Once Upon A Crown is the epic conclusion to the Twisted Crowns trilogy capable of giving every reader the feels. I was so excited to finish reading Elara & Cari’s story, and it did not disappoint! Full of political intrigue, betrayal, romance, and adventure with the perfect amount of world building, Once Upon A Crown is a definite recommendation for any fantasy reader!

Another great installment in the series. There is always plenty of action and bits in the story that will stir your heart. This is the last battle they will have to go through in order to keep their kingdoms safe. A secret diary, magic stones containing dark magic are but a few of the things to overcome. Will they finally get a chance to be free from adversity. I would recommend reading all three of the books as the story will then be complete. I would highly recommend all three.

This is Book 3 of The Twisted Crown Trilogy, and we pick up pretty much after Book 2!

In this final we have love, we have action, we have mystery... and a secret diary...

Elara and Cai are back and stronger than ever. I've enjoyed reading about these 2 and watching them grow as characters and as a couple!

Battling against enemies such as Aries, you really see how these two work together and how they would operate when the world settles.

This entire story is engaging and enthralling. It is a slow burn with the romance but with plenty of action woven into the story, so the slow burn isn't the focal point that I loved!

The addition of finding the secret diary added a great mini-quest for the characters, and it was a great mystery that helped the reader (and the characters!) learn more about the first king.

This was a gripping finale to an intriguing trilogy, and I can't wait to see what Leané shares with us in the future!

Once Upon a Crown

A storyline full of adventure, intrigue and mystery. The story is held from multiple points of view from that of the Queen, Elara, her fiance and exiled king Cai, her brother Lance and friend Gwen and begins with the betrayal of Gwens brother who has helped to take Cai's kingdom and murdered the groups friend. Elara and Cai embark on a quest to not only find remaining magical objects, but to ensure they don't fall into the wrong hands.

While I understood this wasn't the first in the series, I still found the storyline difficult to follow towards the end as if the plot dropped off slightly. The characters themselves I felt lacking chemistry which may be due to the multiple POVs.

Thank you @netgalley and Leane Giliomee for the advanced read.

In the final installment of the Twisted Crown Trilogy, Queen Elara must navigate the ruins of war, both literal and emotional, as Everness teeters on the edge of collapse. With Cai exiled and stripped of his title, the former king finds himself a man with nothing left to lose, except for Elara herself. As enemies rise and old magic stirs, their only chance lies in a forgotten relic said to hold the truth of a kingdom’s founding, and maybe its salvation.

All in all, this was a decent ending to a series I’ve enjoyed overall. Not perfect, but still worth the read, especially if you’re a fan of multiple POVs, slow-burn romance, reluctant royalty, and a heroine who refuses to be anything less than sovereign of her own story.

A good ending to the series. Elara & Cai will need to prepare for the final battle if they are to get Cai’s kingdom back and to save hers. Elara doesn’t know how to get Cai out of his rooms she has tried so hard and she understands that he needs time. But time will be running out soon if he doesn’t fight for his crown.
Cai knows that he can’t expect Elara to carry everything she is still new to being a queen and he needs to think about getting his crown & kingdom back. Will they be able find a way forward together?
The enemy is on their door step and this could well be the end for other of them. Will they be strong enough to win the battle?
A great ending as I was worried at times. Great characters good storyline.
