Garret can't believe quiet geek Brady Carmichael has been selling sexy videos, but the chance of making some easy money overcomes any skepticism. First hurdle is convincing Brady to the gay eighteen-year-old's sarcasm and biting wit make clear his withering opinion of jocks like Garret.
Coaxed into filming together, the roleplay requests escalate and so does evidence that Garret's not so straight as he assumed. Problem is, Brady's uninterested in being an experiment for some bicurious bro.
Desperate, Garret engineers a reason for them to be the roles they're acting might be fake, but he's certain their connection off-camera is real. Is it strong enough to survive, though, if Brady discovers his lie?
"A Guy To Order" is high-heat M/M erotic romance with themes of bi-awakening, opposites-attract, and grumpy-sunshine, from the author of "Jock Auction" and "A Rumor And A Grebe." It's intended for adult readers.
Born in the UK, and now living in California, I'm a gay writer with a love of coming-of-age stories and high heat-levels.
I've always had an overactive imagination, and have been a contributor to free online archives of m/m stories for some years. In 2015 my first published novel, Jock Auction, was released with Loose Id.
When I'm not writing about guys exploring their sexual identities, I'm a food-loving geek who can't get over the fact that California weather is so much nicer than it is back in Britain.
Welcome to the latest episode of "Margaret's Inbox is Full of Gay ARCs."
This book does feature some scenes of homophobia and a queer kid coming out of the closet (which can hit like psychological horror, tbh) but also some fantastic sex scenes. The descriptions of the emotions and feelings of Garrett during the scenes add so much depth. They are incredibly kinky, with certain kinds of play some people might find uncomfortable, but the consent on both sides is explicit in the narrative, safe word and all. It's weirdly adorable how Garrett is supposed to be playing this dominant jock, when he's secretly panicking every time he thinks he's actually hurt Brady.
Garrett's "I'm totally straight, I promise" vibe is funny when his obsession with Brady hits from the first page. He's very aware of his classmate, even if they've barely spoken. It's a golden retriever/black cat dynamic, as Garrett is so determined to be friends with Brady and Brady's not having it. If I was a straight person, or someone who'd always been aware of their queerness, I might find it a fault in the writing that Garrett doesn't realize he's queer when he's so obviously attracted to a guy. But I daydreamed an entire saga about dating a dark-haired woman named Christine while swearing I was straight, so I have no room to judge.
(Yes, Christine from Phantom of the Opera, NEITHER ERIC NOR RAOUL DESERVED HER.)
There is some *drama* in the plot, with Garrett taking rather dramatic steps to convince Brady to keep the steamy times going. It adds some delightful angst to the entire situation. And yes, there is homophobia. But the only direct, on-page homophobia comes from a school bully. The rest is mentioned more in the abstract.
The only downside for me was a bit of trouble in the editing. Not any specific typos, I never really care about those. But multiple times a character refers to something as "back in highschool" as if it's something in they're past, when they're both actively still in highschool. My guess is that the story was originally set in college and de-aged later. It wasn't the biggest deal, but it was enough to have me rereading sections because I thought I'd missed something.
I will warn readers that this story is more Happy For Now, then Happily Every After. The author mentions in their note at the end that HFNs are not only more realistic for the current climate, but act as a reminder to cherish what we have in the moment. Love doesn't have to be permanent to be worth it.
All in all, this story may not be your fave if you lean more towards vanilla. But if you like a kink in your spice, this is right up your alley.
