Holiday Village Romances #1

The Heartbreak Hex

Rate this book

Gertrude Nightshade never thought that she’d be heartbroken right before Halloween.

A busy potion witch in the middle of Holiday Village with a thriving shop, Gertrude thought that she’d be with her werewolf boyfriend forever. That is, until he unceremoniously dumps her at the busiest time in her career. While drowning her sorrows in pumpkin ale (and a mug of ill-advised peppermint schnapps), Gertrude drunkenly decides to put together the ultimate heartbreak healing potion, drinks it and goes to bed. But when she wakes up, she’s not alone.

Vlad Everdark is the charming vampire mayor of the Halloween Neighborhood of Holiday Village.

The last thing he expects is to wake up in bed with the beautiful, hungover witch who sells him his morning brew. The one he’s been secretly dreaming about for years. Not only that, but they are tethered together at the wrist with an unbreakable magic red string that doesn’t allow them to go more than six feet away from each other.

Halloween is only days away, the biggest night of the year for both of them.

Can they break the hex that is keeping them together? And, as they spend more time with each other, will they find that they want to?

This was just an adorable, funny and charming read. Very short, but the perfect little Halloween rom-com. Loved the world it's set in, very immersive. Loved all the characters, particularly the main couple. Had me smiling like a fool, it was so sweet. Looking forward to reading the next book, which is Xmas themed.

I'm so lucky to have received this as an ARC from the author! This was such a cozy Halloween novelette.

After Gertrude's boyfriend essentially has an emotional affair and decides that he is leaving her, she gets drunk and does something that sets the whole story in motion, and boy am I glad she did!

There is a little spice to this novel, which I felt added to the overall love story and the development of Gertrude and Vlad's romance.

There is also a nice scene where Gertrude stands up to a person who was essentially a bully toward her. Definitely a moment where I felt Gertrude grew as a character.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would recommend to anyone else looking for an easy read for Halloween

This book is ADORABLE. It’s the perfect bite-sized (pun 100% intended) Halloween romance read. The characters are insanely cute and head over heels for one another and the spice is so well-written. Actually, the whole little book is well-written!

I cannot wait for the rest of this cute series.

Potions witch Gertude gets broken up with by her boyfriend or five years right before Halloween. After a night of drinking with her sister, she turns to her handy cauldron and whips up a brew to cure her heartbreak. Waking up the next morning wrapped in the arms of the mayor, whom she's had a crush on for years, was not part of the plan. Vlad's just thrilled to be closer to his newly-single crush, but things are tricky as there's a magical red string, keeping the two of them bound together. As Halloween approaches, they are split between her thriving business and his mayoral duties. Gertude searches in vain for a way to break the hex, but do either of them really want to be apart?

Described as a whimsical read, this novella lived up to that. Gertrude and Vlad were adorable in the sense that neither wanted to confess their feelings for each other until the universe literally tied them together. Their dynamic was cute as they flirted around, but things started heating up once they realized. I loved the Holiday Village, and with the glimpses of Gretchen and Nick in here, I'm sure their story will be just as fun. The Heartbreak Hex is a cute and fun little read to get you in the Halloween spirit!

Arc reader review:

I'm not sure whether to give it a 2.5 or a 3, but I'll give it a 3 because I read it on Halloween, which was super appropriate.

Starting with the story: who wouldn't want to read a book about a heartbroken witch who makes a potion when she's drunk, who join her, without knowing exactly how, with her crush who happens to be a vampire? The story is very well constructed and the events unfold very well, making us fall in love with the couple from the very first page.

As for the characters, they're all incredible. Although I would have liked our Gertrude to be a little more outgoing (since that's literally what her twin says she is in the extra chapter), it didn't make me like her any less. Having Val's pov makes his development deeper in terms of personality, but I missed knowing a bit more about his background: family, friends, why he ran for mayor, etc. Secondary characters also check! A lot of diversity in terms of characterisation.

Moving on to world-building, I think that for a short story like this, it was incredible and well done.

The big problem I found with the book and which brought the rating down was the writing. I know it's probably wrong to rate it, since that's what characterises an author, but I can't leave it out of this review, since it had a big influence. There were moments when I laughed out loud and got carried away by the story, but there were others when the writing was perhaps too ‘simple’ and ‘direct’: I remember that in the first few chapters it is described that she went to put on her pyjamas and there is a very direct description of what the main character was doing that I didn't like (e.g. I took off my T-shirt, took off my trousers, put on my torn blouse, etc.). Another problem was that some of the lines were a bit creepy (I won't give examples because that might be a spoiler, bit the big problema maybe was chapter 11).

I loved the extra chapter and I think the epilogue could have had more especially in detail for the special scene.

Here's my favourite quote from the whole book: "Alright, my dick is a little disappointed, but it doesn't have a brain and isn't the boss of me"

What an absolutely adorable Halloween Romance Novella. I adore the concept of a Holiday Village and various holiday themed magical beings (think witches, Christmas elves, cupids, etc) finding love throughout the Holiday centric neighborhoods. This was a super quick read and perfect for spooky season. I can't wait to read the next one!

✨Halloween Themed Romance

It was incredibly adorable to see Gertrude and Vlad interact, they are perfect for each other just like this story is for Halloween.

Although I enjoyed it and it was a simple and quick read, I would have liked there to have been more development of Vlad for example, I feel like the book was focusing completely on the love story and the spell rather than the characters.
But despite everything my rating is 4.5 stars and I'll round it up to 5

This book is such a great read—I really enjoyed it! It follows the story of Gertrude, a witch who owns a successful potion shop called Eye of Newt, and Vlad, a vampire who also happens to be the mayor of the Halloween Neighborhood. Gertrude dedicates all her time to her potion shop, leaving just a little for her werewolf boyfriend. Unfortunately, he doesn't value their relationship and decides to leave her.

After a drunken night caused by her broken heart, Gertrude brews a heartbreak hex that ends up binding her to Vlad. This spell throws both of their lives into chaos, leading to a series of difficult and unexpected situations.

The mix of magic, humor, and emotion made this book such an enjoyable and engaging read.

Quotes:
„Heartbreak, heartbreak, go away,” I chant, waving a shaky, drunk hand over the potion, “Never come another day.” Then I pause and impulsively add, “And bring a better boyfriend to me. One who fits me to a T.“

„Gertrude Nightshade,” he says in a low, deliberate voice, “I’m asking to be your everything.“

This was the absolute cutest novella paranormal rom-com! Gertrude, a potion witch, experiences an unexpected breakup, and in her drunken state manages to concoct quite the love potion, tying her, quite literally, to a man she has had a crush on. They have to work to figure out how to break the hex, and as they get to know each other, find that their feelings for each other are not so one sided.

I loved everything about this story, from the names of the characters (Gertrude Nightshade, Vlad Everdark, Harry Moonkin), to the various creatures within the story (witches, werewolves, banshees, vampires, medusa, you name it). I absolutely love that it wasn't just a Halloween specific land, but has neighborhoods for the various holidays like Christmas and Valentines day as well.

The story was all about Halloween and the characters gearing up for the big day, the mayor had to judge the best pumpkin and attend the big Halloween Welcoming ball which kicks off at the strike of midnight on 10/31. I loved the whole countdown to Halloween, and how they started celebrating it at midnight vs how we humans generally don't celebrate until the evening of Halloween.

One of my favorite tropes/themes is when two characters like each other, but neither are aware, and this story does it super well, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat just waiting for them to confess.

The majority of the book, the spice is really pg, with the characters just admiring each other, but then right at the end you get a nice unexpected shot of spice!

This is a perfect October read, but also would be great anytime of year. I really enjoy reading a holiday specific book within the month of that holiday, so was very happy to be able to read this book in October. This book gives me major Halloweentown vibes, and I love it. I can't wait to read the next installment!

I'm so glad this wasn't just "an easy grab at a Halloween themed love story" as sometimes these novellas can be/look like. This was such a cute and whimsical read, it was a fun Halloween love story! Exactly as the cover would suggest. 🖤🎃🧡

It was giving me adult Halloweentown vibes & I loved that. I think this is a fun fall read & definitely got me even more in the spooky season mood. The characters are fun and easy to root for & I think she did a great job with the world-building. It was perfectly set up and easy to visualize for such a short novella. At times I found myself wishing it were longer but then also correcting myself because there were times it leaned towards having more details as a longer story would just be too much…(hopefully this makes sense😅)

The only reason this isn't a 5 star read from me is just due to the writing. There were times I wasn't a fan of her descriptions. They came off a bit over-descriptive. If you're saying you're going to go get dressed, I don't need to read " I put on my sweater, then zipped up my skirt." like yeah girl…that's what getting dressed is…But that's just me being nitpicky. Also, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it - but I'm kinda wishing the spice would've been behind closed doors…I know it's a novella, so everything has to move quickly - but damn! I felt a bit of whiplash from them making out at the ball because she stood up to her ex and childhood bully, to rushing home to undress each other… but hey, if you're in the mood for some pumpkin spice - it's included for your enjoyment. Also, going off the "moving too fast", the immediate "I love yous" & engagement aren't my favorite. But again, this is just me being nitpicky.

Overall, I'm glad I gave this novella a chance and I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I think it'll fit best to read them during the season the story goes along with. I wanna make sure I get the maximum vibes these cute stories have to offer!

I'm a bit late to the party for this Halloween novella, but being a sucker for cozy romance, I couldn't resist. The Heartbreak Hex hit the spot with its one bed, forced proximity, and magic tropes.

Gertrude Nightshade is a potion witch in Holiday Village. Halloween is around the corner, making it the busiest time of year for her when her useless werewolf boyfriend, Harry Moonkin, decides to break it off with her for none other than her high school bully Fueled on peppermint schnapps, Gertrude tries to lessen her heartbreak with a homemade potion. She wakes up the next morning, hungover and in bed with the attractive vampire mayor, Vlad. To make things worse, Gertrude and Vlad are attached to each other by a red thread, keeping them within six feet of each other.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely adored reading this novella. My first impression was of Halloween Town vibes. There was a focus on picking out the perfect giant pumpkin for the Halloween ball, and all I could think of was the pumpkin in Halloween Town. I loved Vlad. He was the ultimate gentleman when it came to the situation that he and Gertrude were in. He had had feelings for Gertrude since high school, but he took into consideration Gertrude's feelings toward her breakup and didn't want to scare her by confessing his feelings or that he was secretly happy about the forced proximity. He also didn't want to embarrass her in front of the other Holiday Village creatures and easily made up reasons for why they were constantly shadowing each other.

I highly recommend this novella if you're looking for a cute and cozy paranormal romance that will give you all the feels!

cozy fantasy • cozy romance • dual pov • forced proximity • halloween • magic • novella • one bed • paranormal romance • romantasy • vampires • witches

I want to start by saying that this is the perfect Halloween read. You could probably guess it by the synopsis or maybe the cover, but I just want to guarantee it.

Okay, so it’s about Gertrude, who is the owner of Eye of newt, a thriving shop, and Vkad who is the mayor of the Halloween town.

Gertrude has always had a small crush on Vlad, but would never act on it because of her five year old relationship with her scumbag boyfriend.

Vlad has always been in love with her, but could never tell her because of her relationship.

But everything changes when her boyfriend (that totally didn’t deserve her) breaks up with her. She, heartbroken, mixes together a heartbreak fix potion, while drunk on pumpkin ale and schnapps.

Next morning, she wakes up with Vlad in her bed, bound together to him by an unbreakable red string. While they try to navigate their lives with the hex tethering them together, they also try to not reveal their adoration of each other. Well, at least not too much.

I really enjoyed reading this book, but I wouldn’t say that it was written to be a literary classic, but more to entertain the reader. It was good, with a writing style that floated on, and easy to read.

Something that I would’ve liked to have seen in the book would be the other four days that they were bound together, because they were just skipped over, but I enjoyed the parts we got.

Summarized, I would recommend this book to all fans of Halloween, fluff, cutesies, witches, and romantic comedies.

Ooh, this was cute little read and had all the right vibes for the upcoming Halloween. It is the first year that I am trying to chose books according to the season to get more into the mood (I def need that for the autumn, as I am a summer lover). It's working guys, who knew?! 🤣 I should have done this much much earlier.

Anyway, back to the book. I really enjoyed it. I found that I kept looking forward to reading it after work and all the other duties. The idea of a Holiday Village where different neighbourhoods are dedicated to different major yearly festivities it cute. The world building is surprisingly clear, well-worked out and interesting for such a short book. The characters felt real, fleshed-out. Even the interfering, sentient house felt like such a fun quirky character!

Weren't I married, I wouldn't mind meeting my own Vlad, a caring and charming vampire! A drunken-mistake-type of hex, binding him to our other main character, a quirky girl-boss witch Gertrude, was also a very fun idea. Their romance might have at times felt a bit rushed (I mean, it is only a novella, so things had to work out quick, I guess) but it was still something I rooted for. And of course now that I've "visited" the Holiday Village just before Halloween Ball, I'll of course will be looking forward to their magical and our human realms merging that night.

Thank you to the author and BookSirens website for a chance to read this cozy novella. This is my honest review. Can't wait to read more about this village and other holidays.

This is a sweet little holiday romance, perfect for Halloween time.

I loved the sprinkling of world-building throughout, and the Holiday Village seems like a wonderful setting for a string of seasonal romances. I feel like the author gave us just enough insight into how the world works and what other holiday towns are around, so we know what to expect in future romances.

Vlad was by far my favourite character. The author manages to make him very swoon-worthy using very few words, and the way he called Gertrude 'sweetheart' was just *mwah*.

I really liked the circumstances they characters find themselves in, with the potion tying them together - it made for a fun romance arc, and who doesn't love the just one bed trope?

I only have a couple of criticisms of the book. While I understand it's a novella, and so there's limited space to explore things, the romance is very rapid. Both POVs reveal to the reader that they want each other right at the start, which dissolves most of the tension. It's still fun to see when they'll finally reveal it to each other, but I'd have liked a tiny bit more build up. Similarly, once they've both declared their feelings it moves VERY fast, a bit unrealistically so. This took the edge off a little for me, though the ending was very cute.

All in all, this is a sweet and fun little romance which I'd highly recommend for a lighter Halloween read. I'd gladly read more in the holiday village series.

I received an ARC from the author, thank you so much!

**

What an absolutely adorable Halloween romance and perfect to start the spooky season with! We follow the love story of Gertrude and Vlad, two childhood friends who have been pining for each other for years and years. When Gertrude breaks up with her longtime werewolf boyfriend, she ends up creating a potion while drunk that ties Vlad, the town mayor, to her with a red string. With less than a week to Halloween, these two try to figure out how untangle the rope around their wrists while keeping within 6 feet of each other and trying not to give out all the feelings they harbor.

The story is whimsical, light on its feet and the characters are cute and adorable, making time fly while reading. I love the pining and the inner thoughts both have (got to love that dual POV) of each other as they try to keep things PG and friendly. We got so many amazing and funny moments before the big love reveal and oh my, I just melted over it. The HEA is perfect and fits them so so well, I was giggling with happiness at the end of the book. I love also that we got hints to the next couple in the series and I cannot wait to see what becomes of that budding romance!

This really felt like a good way to start October and set my mood high, so I absolutely recommend this with gusto! Love, love, love!

This was a freaking adorable small town romance that had perfect cosy Halloween vibes!

Gertrude is unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend, so she does what any witch in her situation might do. Get drunk and make a potion to get over her heartbreak. When she wakes up hungover next to Vlad, the town's hot vampire mayor, it's clear the potion has gone wrong. Except Vlad's been carrying a torch for Gertrude for years, and he's determined to make the most of the situation. So maybe being hexed on Halloween isn't the worst thing to happen.

The story in the this holiday novella was super endearing. I loved watching Gertrude get over her ex by rediscovering her value and her happiness. And Vlad was just the perfect man to support her and make sure she knows how amazing she is. He's the supportive bestie who's secretly in love that any woman would swoon for.

And Vlad is (respectfully) very happy to be tied to Gretchen and not able to leave her side. I really enjoyed seeing her discover the potential for a healthy relationship with a man who worships her. And I absolutely loved the way their relationship developed from friendship to a spicy payoff.

This was a perfect quick read if you're looking for a low angst, cosy, sweet with some spice romance!

I received this book as an ARC and I’m incredibly grateful that I got to read it!

Gertrude Nightshade gets her heart broken, as her long-term boyfriend leaves her for her bully. Drinking with her sister to forget her sorrows leads to what can only be described as a drunken mistake, when the next morning she finds herself in bed with her long term crush.

I loved Gertrude and the world building, Halloween Village coming alive in my mind. It was fun to see how events evolved, and how our main characters interact and solve the predicament they’re in.

It’s a perfect Halloween romance, with a bit of spice and a great sense of humour, so if you enjoy great world-building this book is for you!

However, there are a few things that I had an issue with, which is why I gave the book 3 stars. I felt like a lot of descriptions were redundant, and at points it felt like the characters were talking about the same things in circles. I also felt like some sexual stuff could be a bit toned down or written less blatantly - it was especially glaring in Vlad’s perspective. I was enjoying the sweet views he had of Gertrude only to have his dick thrown into the mix.

All in all, it was an enjoyable read and one that put me in Halloween mood, and I’ll definitely read the next book in the series!

The Heartbreak Hex by Jordyn Alexander ARC Review

Firstly, thank you to the author, Jordyn Alexander for allowing me to read her new Halloween Romance Novel as an ARC! It was a spellbinding tale of magic and romance that is the perfect spooky season read!

This quick read is a captivating and fun journey into the world of magic and witchcraft that explores heartache and unexpected love. The author did a fantastic job of blending romance and magic into an enchanting story that pulled me in with its banter and charm.

The FMC is a strong and quirky witch who decided to cast a heartbreak spell in an attempt to move on and heal her broken heart, making it easy to root for her and become invested in her journey. Her character is filled with depth, vulnerability and humor that explored her struggles with loss, love and acceptance of ones self. The romance throughout this book was delightful to read, with heartwarming moments, lots of chemistry and tension that kept me invested.

A favourite of mine was the books fun and unique twist on witchcraft and the fantasy world. The magical elements, potions and witchcraft were integrated perfectly into the story making it feel magical and exciting. The blend of fantasy and magic with everyday life created the perfect cozy read that was also relatable in some aspects.

This is a fast-paced read that was balanced brilliantly with laugh-out-loud moments and themes of self-worth and love. The MMC also complimented the FMC's journey whilst also adding more depth to the plot.

Overall, this book is a perfect cozy read for anyone who enjoys reading romance with a touch of magic. It's got such an uplifting message of healing and is filled with humor. This book had me smiling and laughing from the beginning and is a must read!

A sweet little Halloween story! I was a bit surprised it has as much plot as it did - the run up to Halloween was a bigger part of the story than I expected. I think I was expecting this to be more spice forward, and it's really not. There's lots of glances and suggestions, but you're waiting until the end for things to properly heat up. I'm happy that was the case - this story was really sweet just how it was.

Seriously, this is the gentlest little story. There is the tension of when they’re going to acknowledge their feelings, but it's never in doubt. Our MMC Vlad is a charmer from the word go, and while our FMC Gertrude is dealing with her rubbish ex, she's over him fast (good for her). The only thing I would have liked would be for Vlad to have been more obviously a vampire. He felt like a normal man who could occasionally fly, unlike Gertrude who was obviously a witch and behaved like it throughout the story.

I'm looking forward to the rest of this series - I love stories tied to the holidays and I feel like these are going to be delightful little low stakes treats.

I read an advance copy of this book. My thoughts are very much my own.

This was a cute, cozy little romance perfect for Halloween. I'm talking hot-apple-cider-on-a-cool-Halloween-night cozy.

Vlad Everdark was such a sweet, charming mayor who just so happened to be completely devoted to Gertrude Nightshade without being a pathetic lovesick puppy. I loved that he understood that Gertrude's business was just as important as his political career, and while he was head-over-heels for her, he would've settled for just being friends if that's all she wanted. Meanwhile, I was totally rooting for him to kick Harry's furry werewolf behind all the way to the Forgotten Holidays neighborhood, but I understand why Gertrude held him back. Even still, it was pretty satisfying to see both Vlad and Gertrude — Gertrude especially — put Harry Moonkin and his new girlfriend in their places.

As for Vlad and Gertrude together, they made for such an adorable couple! Let's face it, Vlad's 'haunted' house was just telling these two what we were all thinking (or, ya know, yelling at the page): 'Kiss, you fools!' 😍😉

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

When Gertrude faces heartbreak after her long-term relationship ends, she wishes for the heartache to be over. That evening she goes out with her sister to drown her sorrows in pumpkin ale. Afterward, Gertrude drunkenly concocts a heartbreak healing potion that goes haywire and ties her to an old crush—Vlad.

Gertrude and Vlad work together to break the Hex only to realize it has brought them everything they have ever wanted.

A little bit of insta-love but not too bad since there is reference to a history of friendship.

Once again, she provides a unique and refreshing style to trending trope—one bed.

While this was a quick read, it was very enjoyable. The heartbreak Hex is in the re-read pile for next year’s spooky season. This author always brings a breath of originality to her work. I look forward to reading more of the Holiday Village series.
