overall review for the series so far: good, and has cute characters and art, but definitely a series for kids that i would get more enjoyment out of if i myself were a kid lol

but still recommend for younger readers!

Honestly, we're just reading this series because the newest book in Wings of Fire isn't out yet ...
My 7-year-old didn't understand why Roke was so upset and why Ruskin was acting that way. To me this felt like a filler book and I'm getting annoyed at the whole, " The Scarlet dragon has a secret" teaser that's been barely mentioned or addressed for 13 books now.
Edit: okay, I asked Google and there is no secret. The text on the back is all marketing and doesn't actually have anything to do with the arc we're supposed to be on in this series. I think we'll stop reading this series here. The Battle of Wrenly with all magical creatures fighting was the peak.

Enjoyed reading this with the kids, but it felt pretty anemic. I think we were all hoping for a more robust story. Fingers crossed for the next one!

This book was great, but considering how long I've waited for it, I honestly expected a little more. Roke parted with Aster, which was.. inconvenient at worst and he saves his friends (and Ruskin) from ShadowRot in a like, two-page fight scene. I'm excited for the next one as I hope it brings more drama and intensity then this one.
