Get comfortable with death. That was the lesson Johan "The Ax" Tyson taught his son Reyonld "Reece" Tyson. But there is one death that Reece wouldn't get comfortable with. He's so uncomfortable with the idea of the death of his secret husband, Thomas Dobbs, that he is willing to sacrifice everything to protect him. No matter the cost.

Now that decisions have been made, Reece and Thomas must deal with the consequences.

This 16.5k word novella is a Black Gay mafia romance, a thrilling addition to the world of Steelbury City series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | From treehouse confessions to chosen vows—I felt it all.

My Lieutenant may be a novella, but it gave me a full story arc with depth, drama, and a love that felt lived in. Reece and Thomas’s bond? So soft and solid. From confessions in a treehouse to an emotional wedding in a tattoo shop (yes, I teared up), their connection had my whole heart.

But this isn’t just a love story—it’s about legacy, grief, and choosing your future. Reece wanted to be Don—not for power, but to break the toxic cycle his father built. Watching him take that on while still protecting the love he built with Thomas? Whew.

And Darius? Darius had the audacity to ask for the position like Reece hadn’t earned every right to it. That whole dynamic had me tense from start to finish.

Jaylee Fields packed this story with heart, family tension, and a main character who fights for softness in a violent world. I’m already waiting on book two.

Read if you love: queer Black love, mafia drama with emotional stakes, loyalty vs legacy, and characters who lead with heart.

This was a fast paced and easy read, introducing us to Reece, the son of the Don, and Thomas, his right hand man and secret lover! It’s a great intro to their mafia family dynamic and the deep connection between Reece and Thomas. I can’t wait to dive into the next part of their journey, especially since it ends just as things are really heating up!
