Andrea has always enjoyed creating characters and stories. But it wasn't until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Once she heard about a writer who never let her characters deviate from the script. If they did, she just killed them. How sad, she thought. For her one of the best parts of being a writer is letting the characters have a mind of their own and seeing where the story takes them.

She loves this quote from Robert Frost, which sums up her opinion on allowing the characters their freedom: “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.”
― Robert Frost

Andrea writes fantasy, paranormal, and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba.

Brock Rashwe, son of the tree elves, and brother to the wind, earth, and water, is known to his Elvin people as the Vaer--the Bringer of Death. Having been bitten by a vampyre, Brock is cursed with a hunger that neither food nor drink will fulfill. And unlike the vampyre, Brock's thirst is not for blood, but for Kajh--the essence of life, upon which he now feeds and is fueled. From a human, Brock may be sustained for no more than a few days, while other magical creatures can satisfy his hunger for weeks at a time. No creature is safe... except for Celeste, who is the only living being known to Brock that he cannot drain by touching.

In the first book we meet Celeste of the Elvin prophecy. This book continues with Brock and Celeste's journey back to Tamlon, the hidden Elvin world, shrouded in a veil that protects it from the prying eyes of the humans. Tamlon is a most magical place amongst the trees, with danger, adventure, and beauty around every bend. And while Celeste is accompanied by Brock, keeping her safe is another story. By nature, no other creature is permitted to enter. But Brock must bring Celeste back to Tamlon as her role is vital to the survival of the land. And the journey that ensues is indeed a magical one!

I loved the first book in the series, The Garnet Dagger! Cursed in Shadow is equally spellbinding! I was awestruck by the world building, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing where the characters would take us. A fantastic tale, with a charming love story entwined, this is a must read for anyone who enjoys escaping into a fantasy world where anything can happen!

My Initial Reaction…
I didn’t realize until picking up Cursed in Shadow how much I missed Celeste and Brock! This was just enough to remind me of what I loved about this series and to get me ready for the next full-length book, Sons of Dragons, which releases next month.

The Good…
Cursed in Shadow does a fantastic job of quickly reconnecting you to the characters. I hadn’t readThe Garnet Dagger since August and only quickly reread my review before launching into Cursed in Shadow, but it was enough! I immediately started remembering all the important details and it was like reuniting with a long-lost friend.

I don’t want to say too much here, because you really need to go read book 1, The Garnet Dagger if you haven’t yet. A really neat shift in this short, though, was that it takes place almost entirely in the Elvin lands. We haven’t seen much of them in The Garnet Dagger and this expanded our view. I can’t say that I’m much of a fan of the Elves – with a couple of exceptions they’re kind of the bad guys, except Brock is one of them and is sort of trying to save them, and you do want him to succeed. But their not the villains, exactly, just a very scared and angry race that has been living separate from the human world for too long! Andrea did a great job letting us see their anger, fear, and confusion – coupled in with the existence a few more likeable Elves – in such a short space.

I don’t usually give such short books a five star rating because, even if I enjoy them, it just doesn’t seem possible for them to fully satisfy me. Cursed in Shadow did! There was great action and magic, some pretty great romance, moments that made me angry or sad, and even world building! It also set up really well for Sons of Dragons, leading us towards the search for the four (which you’ll understand when you read the books!) and letting us know that we’re going to see some pretty exciting new villains moving forward (I’m dying to tell you about this one scene, but I don’t want to ruin it!)

The Bad…
Umm… okay I had to really think, but Celeste (who is my favorite character) had a reaction to Brock at one point that I found really unexpected and didn’t really fit her character. But that was really the only thing that bothered me at all in this short, except I guess, that I wish it weren’t so short!

Concluding Sentiments…
Andrea did a fantastic job utilizing all the elements that she built into The Garnet Dagger to make this short do the work of a novella or maybe even a full length book. I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Sons of Dragons now!

I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

For those of you who have read the first book in this series, The Garnet Dagger, this book is quite a wonderful little read.

Taking place after the destruction of the Warloc, Cursed in Shadow follows Celeste and Brock as they journey back to Brock's home of Tamlon to find the prophecies of the four, because of course defeating the Warloc can't be enough. Now they are going to have to deal with someone who is just a tad bit miffed by the Warloc's defeat. His protégé, his progeny. And boy is she going to make her first act against our hero and heroine a big one.

Of course, though, before this first act, we get to see the general reaction of the elves toward Celeste and Brock bringing her to Tamlon. You see, due to the fact that humans are basically forbidden to enter there, she makes quite a few enemies by basically doing nothing. Just the fact that she exists inside their land is reason enough. And Brock isn't fairing any better. He already had enemies before he brought her there, and now...well, this isn't really helping matters.

They won't be staying long, thankfully, as they need to find some important players to aid in ridding the land of the sickness and evil that is rotting its very core. One of which was long thought dead...Brock's very own long lost twin sister.

But before they leave, you know that big first act that I told you about? Well, the curtain is rising and Brock is going to get quite a surprise. A very revenge-filled surprise.

Things are getting quite juicy...

This is kind of the perfect quencher of my literary thirst between the first and second books in this series. It segue's wonderfully by allowing the little pit stop in Tamlon. A very important pit stop, mind you, because it kind of allows a little introduction to who our characters will be dealing with now. Someone who has learned from the Warloc certainly cannot be good.

This story also delves a little bit more into Brock and Celeste's relationship. Not just physically, mind you, although it does get a bit steamy, but also how they truly feel about one another. But I can't help but get a bad feeling about this. Something is not sitting right with me. It is unexplainable, but I think that maybe one of them could possibly turn against the other. I don't know, but it could be one of them could very well join the dark side of this fight. They do have cookies...so I guess that would appeal?

I don't know, it is just a feeling.

But anyway...READ THIS!!! And if you happen to read this one before The Garnet Dagger, READ THAT ONE TOO!!! I can only imagine how the rest of the story will play out...and I am quite excited to find out.

Cursed in Shadow was an enjoyable novella I devoured during breakfast. Andrea R. Cooper has a really lovely writing style that draws you into magical worlds and makes you actually believe you’re in another place and time. At least for a while. Surely, the charming language used by the characters (especially Brock) helps in this, but the descriptions need to be mentioned as well. I found them helpful in order to have a clear vision of the backgrounds and to get me into the action, always.

I must say that, if my read slowed down at some point during the first instalment, here perhaps it went a bit too fast towards the end, where Celeste suddenly had a reaction I didn’t quite understand. Anyway, I’ve really appreciated how the author re-introduced Brock and Celeste’s world to the reader, I had a good time re-connecting with them and now I’m definitely curious to read about Brock’s sister and see where the story leads . . .

I received a free copy of this book from the Author for an honest review. This does not affect in any way my opinion of the book nor the content of my revieworiginally posted on Darkest Sins.

I'm glad that the author decided to publish this short story in between books.

I didn't read the first of the series but you don't really have to. This story give enough information where you understand exactly where Celeste and Brock are coming from and why they are going where they are.

I LOVED the way the settings were described. I could see the differences between the human world and the Elvin. I could correlate how the magic was described and how it manifested easily. I've read some books that left a lot to be desired in that area but this is definitely not one of them.

It is easy to like both Celeste and even Brock. I thought I would find it hard to designate him as the "hero" because of what he is but I was absolutely wrong. I also love them as a couple; they are a cohesive unit despite everything going on around them and those who would be against them.

We join Celeste and Brock as they just defeated the evil Warlock. Brock takes Celeste back to his home, the Elvin city, but prepares for a hostile reception. As the Vaer, he is feared, and as a human Celeste are forbidden to enter. But they must find more information about the prophecies is they are to destroy the warlock forever.

Brock and Celeste journey isn’t getting any easier, instead they are greeted with fear and hostility. But as always they stand their ground and stay on their path to destroy the warlock forever. This time around they face more than just angry elves, they face an ancient evil and the warlock protégé, who isn’t about to let them win. Brock also have to face a familiar face, in a more deadly form

Cursed in Shadow is a good read.
This book is the continuation of The Garnet Dagger (Book 1).
Brock and Celeste's adventure continues as the two will go to Tamlon to search the prophecy that will guide them to defeat the Warloc.

Just like The Garnet Dagger, this book is great.
There's no dull moment and I was definitely hooked with this book.
Unexpected character will show up that surprises Brock.

This book is great and I loved it!
Can't wait to see what will happen next to their adventure!

This book is a bridge between The Garnet Dagger and Son of Dragons. Celeste and Brock journey to the Elvin city of Tamlon to view the prophecy scrolls. However, nothing is as easy as it should be and they face prejudice and hatred at every turn. Finding no answers but armed with additional knowledge they are forced to run from Tamlon as evil has followed and means them harm. This chapter had an exciting storyline filled with danger and action. A great addition to this interesting saga of witches, elves and vampires.

First let me say, Andrea Cooper is an amazing person. She goes above and beyond for her readers! Thank you, personally from me, for the opportunity to read "Cursed". Sending me the special PDF was very kind.

Second, the book is awesome. I simply love Brock and Celeste. Their love is palpable! I believe that even though the next journey is not directly about them, they are not gone. This series is tangible and heart felt!

Do take the time to read!!!!!

This novella is from one hundred pages I had to cut out of Son of Dragons Book 2 Legends of Oblivion. I decided to self-publish these as it shows in detail what happened when Brock took Celeste into Tamlon and just before they find his sister - which isn't shown in Book 2 - only a brief summary is given.

Good, but felt as though it was missing something

I did like what was there. But, it seems to be a teaser instead of the book. No backstory, no leads to the next, just a cliffhanger that even with the excerpt of book 2, I don't think it left me with the thought of buying the rest of the series. So while I do think this was a great start, I'm not convinced to carry on ..

Brock and Celeste leave us wanting more in this quick novella. With a cliffhanger like that I will be fast tracking the next book.
