The first Lydia Michaels book I ever read was La Vie En Rose. At the time, I thought, “this woman is a genius”. After reading Sacrifice of the Pawn, that thought is confirmed. Isadora’s story is nothing short of brilliance. And just as in La Vie En Rose, this book left me breathless. I rode a veritable rollercoaster of emotions as I made Isadora’s journey with her.
A compelling story of a girl thrust into the responsibilities of adulthood when she should be experiencing the simple carefree existence of youth, Sacrifice of the Pawn gives readers the story of Isadora Patras, older sister of Lucian Patras (The Surrender Trilogy). I imagine you could read the story without having read the Surrender Trilogy, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Knowing the story of so many characters in the Surrender Trilogy made this story so much more rewarding. And besides, that trilogy is amazing!

Isadora Patras had just been a normal sister until she’d become the caregiver of her younger siblings, Lucian and Toni. Her father had abandoned the family weeks after burying their mother. His absence stole every opportunity that was Isadora’s due. She couldn’t turn her back on her siblings like her father had. And so she took over the parental duties. On the outside she wore the mask of a composed, secure woman but often, on the inside, she felt as insecure and clueless as a little girl. While her friends were going to college and getting married, Isadora sacrificed years raising Lucian and Toni, and as they grew older and closer to leaving home, Isadora felt lost. “Her wings had been clipped the day her father left and she feared she’d eventually be left all alone in an empty nest, too afraid to fly after her own dreams.”
She wanted more from her life. She yearned to feel loved and needed. Perhaps that’s why she turned to a man who had been a comfort to her in the years since her mother’s death. Sawyer Bishop was her father’s colleague. He’d been more than that for her family though. Sawyer’s son, Slade, and Lucian had been friends for years and he had been a part of family events. He’d always seemed to see Isadora apart from her siblings, and was there to remind her she was doing a good job with them. But on one particular night, their relationship changed. There was a sort of chemistry between them. Isadora had never felt that kind of attraction. When Sawyer kissed her, it was a delicious shock. Like a dream she didn’t want to wake from. And when he made love to her, it was slow and decadent. Sawyer immediately regretted it. He had been her first and there was a 20 year age difference between them. He worked for her father who trusted him to look out for her. But Isadora didn’t care. She’d always put everyone else first. This time she wanted something for herself.
And so their secret relationship began. An on and off relationship that spanned 12 years. Isabelle loved the way Sawyer made her feel. Beautiful, like a woman. He eased her loneliness. He became her closest friend. Her confidant. She loved him. But Sawyer struggled with his conscience. He felt like he was a safety net for Isadora and she was missing out on opportunities in life. The opportunity for marriage, children. He’d been married before. He didn’t want to love like that again. He was holding her back. Plus, keeping the relationship secret was hard. So many people could be affected and hurt if it were known. The timing to “come out” was never right. When they were together, it was intense, exciting. But when they were apart, Isadora chastised herself for being like her mother. Pining for a man who could never love her back. Did she mean anything to Sawyer or was she destined to be alone? What did the future hold for her?

Lydia Michaels creates the most complex, intriguing characters. I loved Isadora and Sawyer. Being closer to Sawyer’s age, I could empathize with his fears in pursuing a relationship with someone 20 years his junior, always being in different stages of life. I identified most with Isadora. I understood Isadora’s need for more in her life. I could understand her doubts of being enough and being afraid to ask the questions running through her mind. Isadora had more courage and wisdom than she realized though. I loved that each time she got knocked down, she worked on her Become More Independent Plan and attempted to redefine her life. She was learning the lessons she’d missed out on. She was just learning them later in life. Watching her grow into her own was inspiring.
I was thrilled to see the characters from the Surrender trilogy again. Seeing a younger version of Lucian and Toni growing up was wonderful. I enjoyed seeing a different side of so many characters. For some, it made me love them even more. And for characters I’d been on the fence about, I gained a new appreciation for them.
Lydia Michaels writes such powerful romances. For me, her books are the ultimate romance indulgence. They feed my soul. Her writing is just that beautiful. Her ability to write lines so mesmerizing, you want to linger over them, write them down to remember. It’s like poetry. She writes stories that stay with you. Books that you want to read again and again. I am on pins and needles waiting for the next book in this Surrender Games series. That prologue is haunting me and I am anxious to see where this story goes.

What in the ever loving frick?!?!?!

Gah!!!

This book...

I can't even...

Please don't make me...

I don't know if I can even begin to say what this book did to me and and explain it enough to attempt to write a review.

I was told that I needed to read The Surrender series first, before I read this one, but I followed along with it just fine with not reading it. But I will say, now I definitely want to go back and read that series to see what it was all about. I'm definitely intrigued.

Also, let me say this, this is my first book by this author and it will definitely not be my last. I can't wait to read more of her work. I don't think I have been so excited to read an authors previous work before.

Now I'm gonna attempt to explain this book. Lol

Isadora gave up her youth to take care of her younger siblings. There is a lot she missed out on in life, but she never regrets her decision. Her brother and sister mean more to her than life experiences. But as her siblings grow up, she realizes she still wants all the things she once did and she finally has the courage to go after it. Even love is on her list. But she never thought she would find it in the arms of her father's friend.

Sawyer knows he shouldn't find comfort in the arms and bed of his friend's daughter, but he does it anyways. Knowing being with her will cause trouble neither of them want or need, they keep it a secret.

Can they find a balance between their lives and their secret romance? Can they keep it a secret? Will it destroy everything they have worked for?

Man...I wish I could read this book for the first time again. And I just finished it. Like literally 20 mins ago. It took a while because I had to figure out what I was gonna say. This is the best I can do. Now to sit and wait for book 2. I think I'm gonna die waiting.

I will leave you with this tho... READ THIS DARN BOOK!!! LIKE NOW!!! You won't regret it.

Lydia Michaels WTF? My first time reading this author but it will not be the last. Love her writing style, in-depth, detail, and very descriptive. It flows at a great place not rushed or dragged on for the sake of more... Her characters are developed, some lost souls, some are everyday assholes, and some are loveable. THIS IS A MUST READ!

Sacrifice of the Pawn is the first book I read from this author and I can guarantee you that it won't be the last. I was so hung up with this story from beginning to end and I absolutely love a book that will hook me from page 1.

I, especially love reading about forbidden love and we certainly get that in this book.

A young girl who ends up having a secret affair with her father's colleague and who happens to be 20 years her senior. But seriously, who cares how old the other person is as long as you have chemistry and scorchingly hot chemistry at that!

Poor Isadora has been taking care of her siblings since her mother passed away and her father basically just never cared about them so she was left in charge of her younger brother and sister. She didn't get to enjoy her teenage years and young adult life because she was too focused on taking care of her siblings.

When Sawyer, her father's colleague and Isadora end up having a night of passion, it then becomes a secret affair. One that neither one of them can stop.

I loved the thrill the adrenaline of this book. I was so consumed by Isadora and Sawyer's love affair that when I reached the end I was so worked up about the book that I was disappointed to see that I reached the end. I want more and can't wait to continue on with Queen of the Knight.

Lydia Michaels has a way to suck you right in to her books, her writing is impeccable and it takes you on a thrilling rollercoaster ride that you don't want to end.

5 absolutely must read stars!!

Since stumbling upon Lydia Michaels, I have been working my way through the author’s backlist. Some of the books I have adored, and some I have simply enjoyed. With Sacrifice of the Pawn, I found a book I was never sucked into quite as much as I had hoped.

While some elements of Sacrifice of the Pawn had me curious to see how things developed, I never quite felt the connection to the story that I had hoped to experience. I think a part of this comes from the fact that this story seemed to be linked to other work from the author. There were lots of references to things that were happening with other characters, jumps happening where changes were not explained properly, and it knocked me out of the story more than I’d have liked. I wanted to fully understand these things, and that understanding was never reached. Even the ending came with a lack of understanding, although I am curious to see what comes next.

All in all, this one worked to have me wanting to read more, yet there were too many things left unexplained that prevented me from loving it in the way I’d hoped.

A great continuation to the Surrender Trilogy!

Was extremely happy to get a bit more behind Isadora's life. We learned so little of her in the trilogy, basic only knowing she was the matriarch of the Pastras family after her Mother's death, so delving further into her life we learn more about the motivation into the woman she has become.

Eagerly looking forward to the next in this series, Ms. Michaels certainly does not disappoint!

For starters, I want to say thank you for letting me read this book. Secondly, as I was reading this book it becomes to blow my mind of how the story had flowed all throughout the whole entire book. I am pleased and happy that I had gotten the chance to read the book and experience everything that the story had to offer me. Good job on having the story flow in the right direction as it does already!

So Good

I loved her Surrender trilogy and was so excited to see that she had a spinoff series coming. I can tell you that this author does not disappoint. She using such a witty and insightful storyline and has you making you feel all these different emotions and it is just so well written. I would give this book a 4.5 stars and it is just so worth the read. Even though you can read this as a stand alone I would recommend reading the Surrender trilogy first so you can fully enjoy the characters and the back story that they all have.

Part 1 in a spin off series

My Surrender of the Pawn Review . . .

"I would have given everything for love.  But you'd rather have nothing."

It has felt like forever since I read the Surrender trilogy and so many elements were forgotten, which meant it took me a bit of time to get fully enraptured into the story.  But once my memory came back on board, I was all in.

The Surrender Trilogy is about Lucian Patras and this time around this series is about his older guardian sister Isadora.  Isadora never got the chance to be a kid, instead her circumstances made her older than she needed to be, which made it hard for her to fit in.   Her life was being a guardian to her younger siblings, which excluded her from her friends, whom were all dating and going to school.  Now she had nothing in common with her old friends.  But she's also to young to hang out with other parents of kids the same age as her siblings.

With her having no choice for this role it also caused Isadora to never truly find her self, which left her wanting more and settling for less.

The Surrender games starts before the Surrender trilogy but progresses and ends up finishing in the time line after the trilogy ends.   So we get to see what Isadora goes through for 13 years and 12 of those 13 years were kept in secret.  Now was that secret the best thing she ever did or the most heartbreaking?

"Did you ever read Dr. Seuss?"

What a strange question.  "Of course."

"Well, remember the Grinch, how his heart grew? I think that's more accurate than people realize.  Our hearts can love so many things, so many people.  It's naive to think the first time we fall in love will be the most epic love of our life.  It seems a waste of life to only love one person that deeply and never give your heart to anyone else. Stingy."

I can not wait to find out more from this Patras family and where Isadora's heart lands.

Rich language. Flowing. Poetic. Descriptive. A slow and steady climb. Initially, I was impatient. I wanted the story! And I was excited to see where Lydia Michaels would take us.

The buildup set the scene. The loneness of a young woman, Isadora. She is the caregiver to her siblings Lucian and Antoinette after her mom passed away. Isadora sacrifices her youth and the many ‘rites of passage’ that come with it. She struggles to find her identity, her place. Her father lives in Europe with his mistress. Although her family is extremely wealthy, wealth cannot replace love.

She’d always been a pawn, maneuvered to serve other’s needs.

As her brother Lucien heads off to college Isadora finds herself lonely. Similarly her father’s business partner, Sawyer Bishop, is also feeling the same way. Sawyer’s son Slade, who is Lucien’s best friend, also heads off to college.

Twenty three years old, suffering empty nest syndrome for a son that wasn’t her own, and trapped in a life she never intended to live – her master plan never had time to truly formulate.

They share a moment, a bonding over losing their loved ones to college. This moment ignites and quickly the spark turns into an inferno. One that cannot be put out. Secret lovers. Sexy sexy times!

She wanted to be something, do something she loved, but she also wanted to be loved.

The story unfolds and you get a glimpse of situations that occurred in the Surrender Trilogy. There is love, lust, angst, and then a surprise at the end! I can’t wait to get the next book!

Even if life was a big chess match, the world was short on shinning knights. Everyone wanted to be a stupid, selfish king.

It is recommended that you read the Surrender Series before Sacrifice of the Pawn. Beautifully written!

5 stars!

I really enjoyed Sacrifice of the Pawn and the cover is so pretty.
It is a gripping story that had me not wanting to put down my kindle.
The characters are fabulous!
Every single one is so complex and intriguing. So many layers to each character.
Isadora has lost out on her childhood/young adult life to care for her siblings.
It was her choice which she doesn't regret. But she feels like she missed out on life.
Especially when her younger brother went off to college and graduated and her younger sister finished high school. She sees through them on everything she didn't get to experience.
When she gets into a relationship with Sawyer it's keep a secret. Every time she considers revealing it something happens and she puts it off. For years this has been going on and it was never the right time.
I really liked Isa. She is selfless and very giving. But at times I think she hide behind her siblings because she was scared of living. She took the place of being their mom and dad at such a young age that she just didn't know how to be anything else. The scene where Lucian takes her to a bar just broke my heart.
The cliffhanger it ended on had me grasping and saying oh no,loved it!
Sacrifice of the Pawn needs to be savored and read like you're sipping expensive champagne.
The way Ms. Michael's using words and phrases is absolutely masterful!
Can't wait for next book Queen of the Knight!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy

Sacrifice of a Pawn is the first book in the Surrender Games Series. (I probably shouldn’t use that word – Series because it is a word that Lydia Michaels doesn’t care for) oh well to me that is what these books are. Although, they can be read as a standalone. This author also recommends that you read the Surrender Trilogy before this book only so you can have some of the history before reading this book.

So, sometimes I take a few notes while I am reading my books and I wrote this note - Oh, holy hell! This book is hot! It is very, very good if you know what I mean. And, the ending was brilliant! Needless, to say, I think you can tell that I love this book! I will let you read the synopsis for yourself since I feel the author does a better job than I do in giving a description of the book.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. But, I have also pre-ordered my copy of Sacrifice of a Pawn to give my verified stamp that this book is worth the money.

I don't even know how I feel, I guess because this book made me feel every feeling possible.

I've been in a bit of a reading funk for the past few weeks, I haven't been able to stick to one story and finish it out, I've literally been bouncing back and forth between books, and it has taken me a crazy amount of time to finish one book. But this story broke my funk! Sat down and read it super quick!

Isadora's story is beautiful, I rooted for her so hard, it was amazing to watch her grow into this strong woman capable of going after what she wanted, especially after she had put herself on the back burner for so long. I loved her journey and growth. I was worried the 13 year time span would kind of drag, but it was the perfect pace! The book was actually a super quick read! It made perfect sense to follow her life over this long period of time!

I however was torn when it came to her love interest. A secret relationship can most definitely be fun and steamy but love should not be a secret! And it hurt me to have to watch Isadora go through that.

Lydia Michaels writing was beautiful, but of course I knew that because it was not the first book of hers I had read. I'm typically not the biggest fan of her preferred writing style, because I find most authors can't pull it (it comes across as rather impersonal), but Lydia does it amazingly.

Side note: I didn't read the Surrender Trilogy first like is recommended, but I found I had no problems following the story. Of course now I'm ready to dive into the Surrender series as well!

I received an ARC of this book, having not read anything of hers previously. After I received it, I did go back and read her Surrender series before delving into this one. I'm glad I did. It made the "oh shit" moments all the more delicious. Ms. Michaels has a true gift at evoking tone and emotion. When she paints a picture of desolation, be it externally or emotionally...you SEE it..you FEEL it. Same goes for the myriad of other feelings the story presents. By the end of this book my heart was frustrated, confused, heartbroken, hopeful, and amused all at the same time. I really can't wait for the next book to come out, because there are some definite explanations to be made, and "oh shit" moments to be expanded upon. She really makes you feel for every single one of the characters, even when that feeling involves wanting to throw your reader across the room. I'm anxious to know the fate of them all.

I highly suggest you read the surrender trilogy first and perhaps right before this new series as it will help. The author does a fantastic job at connecting many nuances from the original trilogy. The writing gives you a real feel for the characters so that you understand and have emotional connections with them.

From the Surrender series, Isa, Lucian's older sister, is the Patras we learn about in this novel. As I read he trilogy, I was truly confused as to why she had not found her own love. This book explains it. Love knows no bounds for Isa and she does so so completely and fully, you can't help but feel heartbroken again and again. I feel there is more going on with Sawyer, hopefully to be uncovered in the next novel.

This novel ends on a cliffhanger, but so well executed, it leaves you wanting more!
I'll have some serious book hangover symptoms until the next book comes out. Loved it!! 5 stars!!

This is a spin off of the surrender trilogy . We get to see what happens to the rest of the family and friends of the Patras family . This is Isadora's story .
Isadora is the oldest child and is thrust into adult responsibilities at a very young age , after her mother dies and her father abandons them . She becomes mother figure to Lucien and Antoinette. She runs the house and keeps them in line , for the most part . She has put her life on hold to make sure that they are on the right path.  But she does one thing she forgets herself an her plans and dreams .  Will she be strong enough to get her love and her dreams .
Isadora is such a complex character . She was thrust into the role of caregiver at such a young age. On the outside you see a calm and cool character , a mask she wears quite well  On the inside she is a insecure , scared young woman who doesn't know if she is doing the right thing and is always second guessing herself . As you follow Isadora through the book we see her start to bloom into her strong self . She wants so much more from life she wants to be loved and wants to be needed . She wants more from the man that is his father colleague and friend . Sawyer has been a constant comfort in her young life and now she wants more . She doesn't care that there is a 20 year age difference . She wants something for herself and will get what she wants . She becomes such a strong woman .
Sawyer is a conflicted man , he knows he shouldn't be with Isadora but there is a pull there and he is very confused with the fact that she wants more from the relationship then he can give . He is scared and doesn't want to upset everyone. There are too many people that could be upset and hurt if the relationship ever got out .
The characters are so well written and very complex , we get emotionally involved with each of them. Trust me you will want to wrap your arms around Isadora and hug her and tell her how much she deserves love . Sawyer you kind of want to slap him upside the head a few times . At first you think he is just using Isadora but there is more to it . The author does a great job in building their characters up and letting them find their way towards each other .
This book is a heart wrenching book , you will be on a roller coaster ride that will make you giggle and cry your eyes out .  The author takes us on a journey , the authors writing has a way of getting under your skin and into your heart . I love the way the author shows us the younger characters and the history of the them and takes them to how they are today . This was a very good read, you will get sucked in and before you know it you are done . I can't wait to see if Isadora get her happily ever after in book two . So if you want a great read check it out .

I may have devoured this book in 2 hours this afternoon. It drew me in from the beginning, and kept me there with the drama between the Patras and Bishop families, the chemistry between Sawyer and Isa, and an overall fantastic storyline. I fell completely in love with Isa. She sweet, smart, and when she wants something, she goes after it. Sawyer was sexy, alpha, and was perfect for Isa (when I didn't want to smack him lol) There was the perfect amount of drama between the main and secondary characters in this book, and I can't wait to see what happens next!!! I would definitely recommend this read!!!

A 5 star read for Sacrifice Of The Pawn (Surrender Games Series) by Lydia Michaels

I have read practically every book this author has written and once again she has made me fall in love. I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book! It definitely helped reading The Surrender Trilogy first. This book definitely gives the backstory of Isadore. We know she is Lucien’s sister but this book we truly get to know her. I can not wait to see what will come next!!!!

I really dislike it when the OM from another series (Surrender trilogy book 2) become a H in a future book when he doesn’t get the girl, which is the case with this duet. Saw this guy obsessed with another woman, I don’t need to see it again with a new woman for comparison.

This H was in total love with another h, was in all 3 books, and I wanted him to end up with that h. I think book 2 kinda turned into a love triangle during that series, so I will be avoiding this book.

I received an ARC of this book, from the author who was new to me (ADORE HER!) - I loved it. Started with first set of books, then onto this story, which is a continuation of the story, beginning with early history of some the characters that we met in 'The Surrender Trilogy', continuing on, to after Lucien & Eveyln's marriage. Love the past, present and future of the book. Looking so forward to learning even more ...... Love the characters, and the way they grow, change and compromise-> somewhat, oh Lucien what will we do with you 😏

First of all, I read the Surrender trilogy years ago and loved every minute of it. It was one of the first books series that I bought in paperback copies. One day, I'm going to get them autographed. I was thrilled to see that the author was planning to write more in this series and I was especially happy to get Isadora's story. I was not disappointed. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Lydia Michaels is one of those authors that deserves more attention. I hope this book or series is the one to do that.

Surrender series is definitely a favorite of mine and I do recommend reading it prior to Sacrifice of the Pawn. I was afraid this was not going to compare to the extreme brilliance of that trilogy, but it did!! It really did. This book gives you more insight into characters and backgrounds from The Surrender series, so trust me ,start there. Great Read!!

Loved this book. I am pleasantly surprised how much. I don't even know what to say about this book. It's not my usual read. I tend to live on the darker side of romance. But I do need the light from time to time. And TBH, the light side rarely get a 5 star review from me.
Thank you to this author for this amazing read.

Lydia Michaels knows how to write jems.
The Surrender Trilogy has been one of my favorite series and this spin off called Surrender Games is even more awesome!

This 2 book series is about Lucian's older sister Isadora.

I love Isa so much, she's a selfless heroine, who saw herself taking the role of her mother when their mother died and her father abandoned his children to run with his mistress in France.
At that time a teen herself she had to take care of her little bother and sister and to grow fast and give up on her dreams.

This journey in the life of Isa is filled with sacrifices, heartbreak and loneliness. Isa thrives to be loved once in her life.

She will try to find affection at a family friend Swayer, who is 20 years older than her. An affair that will last on and off for 13 years from when she was 23-36. A sentiment that grew to love from her side but that was never fully reciprocated by this man, who I have mixed feelings about. Because on one hand he made her a favor by pushing her away and saying you need better and on the other hand I was irritated by his behavior, because he always kept her as a dirty secret and was too afraid to make sacrifices for her.

At 36 she finds herself abandoned again and her heart broken and it's at that unexpected time that she meets an other man.
This fascinating man, who will enter her life in a such unexpected way, is someone who those who have read the Surrender trilogy are familiar with, but Isa doesn't know him. It will be so interesting to watch all the drama that will happen between him and Lucio...and him knowing that the woman he likes is Lucio's sister.
I'm so happy Lydia put him in Isa's way...I want spoil his identity though.

Jumping to book 2.

A parallel story from the Surrender Series, in Sacrifice of the Pawn, you get the in depth story that was just hinted at in the original series. Isadora, the oldest of the Patras children, finally gets to tell her story. From the lonely heartache of being the eldest when their mother died, to everything she put on hold in her own life just to help raise her siblings and watch them grow into their own brand of Patras all while sitting on the sidelines and watching her own life pass her by.
An unlikely relationship blooms and wanes then blooms again only to have her legs cut out from under her when he ends it all over again. When she sees him at an even honoring her brother, it's an emotional slap in the face that she isn't even close to being able to deal with so she turns tail and runs...right into a handsome stranger, that isn't much of a stranger after all.
