Like her amateur sleuth, Izzy, USA Today Bestselling author R.B. (Roz) Marshall is a dressage-riding computer geek who loves coffee - but there the similarity ends. Izzy is far smarter, and a lot younger!

Pretty much all of Roz's books are set in her native Scotland. She writes clever, witty cozy mysteries as R.B. Marshall, fantasy and romantic women's fiction as Roz Marshall, and historical romance as Belle McInnes.

A winning return to the high-stakes competition and culture of the horse world in the Scottish highlands.

When Isobel “Izzy” Paterson finds a potential client, Pat McDade, dead in his office before their first meeting and herself a prime murder suspect, she leaps into action to clear her name. However, as she didn’t get the chance to discuss the matter the man wanted her to investigate, she has few suspects to look at other than Pat’s wife, Francine, and the all too chummy show-jumper for Francine’s horse, Darcy.

Roommate and business partner, Trinity Allen, is busy with her very successful salsa class in town, its popularity boosted by a timely newspaper article written by the besotted local reporter, Neil Etherington. Izzy, too, has continued her friendship with Police Sergeant Dean Lovell yet finds herself still thinking about her recent beau, Craig MacDonald. He is still in Windsor temporarily replacing their ailing stable manager.

Meanwhile, Izzy is preparing the queen’s stallion, Eagle, a Highland Pony, and Lady Letham’s mare, Allegra, for competition in the upcoming Royal Highland Show. Princess Anne will be there to present the awards. But, as strange acts of vandalism, some annoying but others that could have hurt someone, are discovered, the list of suspects quickly expands.

A Right Royal Revenge is an excellent cozy mystery, and Izzy is a dedicated and intelligent sleuth. This time, Izzy’s having to work outside the police investigation as she is one of their suspects, and I liked that the author included how this puts a crimp in her budding relationship with the hunky Sergeant Lovely. The mystery is not easy to figure out, but Izzy gets right down to business, asking the right people the right questions, so the resolution makes sense.

Reading this second book in the Highland Horse Whisperer series was like putting on a much-loved pair of slippers: cozy and comfortable. I felt almost as if I knew these people personally, and I was anxious to see how things were going for them. I have missed these characters.

An extra entertaining aspect to me is that the author laces the story with the everyday activities of caring for and training horses. Wow. It is more complex than I ever imagined: both eye-opening and interesting.

As the series progresses, readers learn more about the local community of Glengowrie. I like continuing characters, in general, and many of the Glengowrie crowd are real stand-outs: some offering stability, others humor and quirkiness. It’s nice to see familiar faces.

I recommend A Right Royal Revenge to readers who enjoy cozy mysteries, horse-themed stories, appearances by royals, and tales set in Scotland.

Izzy is back, training horses for Lady Letham (and Queen Elizabeth, known to Lady Letham as Libby). And solving the odd murder here and there. The Large sisters are here as well: Edie with her malapropisms and Ina who interprets them smoothly. Sgt Dean Lovely ... um, Lovell ... still has chocolate eyes and a killer smile, and it seems his interest in our Izzy might not be all professional. But where does that leave Craig?

Picking up right where the last book ended, Izzy’s horse training business is on the up, with a wealthy new customer booking her show jumper in for schooling. Only, when the horse arrives things seem a little ‘off’ with the owners and their regular show rider. And then Izzy gets another of her horse-whisperer visions, confirming that Darcy, their prize horse, has been treated less than kindly.
When Darcy’s owner asks Izzy to meet him after hours, wanting to employ her for her other skill - cyber investigations - she suspects he may be about to ask her to investigate his wife’s relationship with Darcy’s rider. But when Izzy arrives for the meeting, she finds her prospective employer dead at his desk.
With lots going on aside from the murder investigation – gossip, romance, salsa classes, strange police behaviour, the queen wanting to sell her prize stallion, and the excitement of the Highland Show – this book moves swiftly with never a dull moment, lots of quirky characters, and plenty of Scottish atmosphere. All the characters, both those from the last book and the new ones, are clearly defined people with their own agendas, and they behave like real people whose lives often don’t go where they want them to go.
The core mystery of the murder is well entwined with the rest of the story, and although I did guess the identity of the murderer before the end, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Izzy work it out and uncover the motivation. The end wraps things up nicely, while leading on towards the next instalment. I wonder how many dead bodies the Highlands can take!

Reviewing this nearly 10 months down the track, and I recall that I enjoyed this at the time, however, the details escape me. So, I liked it enough that I have a good feeling when I see the cover which makes a 3 star seem right. Will definitely update review if I reread it.

A Really Good Mystery

A really good mystery set in Scotland and starring a horse trainer, all of which makes this a fun and exciting series.

I am enjoying this series. A lovely, feel good reader with pleasant characters and a delightful Scottish background, with even Princess Anne putting in an appearance as she handed out prizes at a horse show.

Once again Izzy stumbles across a body and her assistant Trinity is consistent in her lousy taste in men.

A wonderful book!🤩

I loved to learn more about Izzy and her horses - she has just a wonderful connection with them. As a former horse-girl myself it makes my day to read this series.

Not sure I understand the motive, but loved the characters and of course the horses.
