I recommend this book to each and every Black person I know and don’t know because I swear it’s helped me heal and also it’s backed up so much from my therapy sessions. I’d heard and read about Epigentics prior to reading this book but learning more and going deeper into Epigentics really made me understand it and Family system Theory, which is identifying trauma patterns within your family.
The book’s set up helps also because the author includes case studies and reflective exercises.

The four chapters that really stuck out to me and that helped with my continual healing are:
Chapter 4: Nurturing the inner child
Chapter 9: Emotional Regulation and Healing Techniques
Chapter 14: Processing Resentment and Anger
Chapter 8: Breaking Harmful Patterns

I learned that trauma significantly impacts brain development, primarily the amygdala, which process emotions and the hypocampus which is responsible for forming new memories. I learned that depression can be linked to unresolved grief that my ancestors couldn’t express or process. This statement hit me so hard because I know that they had to remain stoic through so much pain and grief, not just during slavery but throughout their whole lives. And that familial trauma continued on with drug abuse/alcoholism, Poverty, Domestic violence, loss and neglect.

I have so much more to say but this book made such a huge impact on me and my life I’m still processing everything.

I've read MANY books since I've started my journey almost 5 years ago. It's been eye-opening in so many ways, but this book here has given me so much clarity and explanation for my elevated cortisol levels that no doctor has been able to. I've been thinking it's all been related to the immense amount of stress I've dealt with ALL my life, and I'm tired and no longer want it. I've highlighted way too many places, but things that I've heard in my relationship with God have led me to DESIRE to break the cycle. I'm currently not talking to my mother AGAIN, but it's the longest I've gone because I'm tired. It's always my fault, and I know she thinks the same way, like I think it's her fault. This book has really helped me realize that it's our family dynamics and system that is broken. It's sad, but I'm hopeful that at some point, we will be able to come together and heal together. Who knows when, but for the meantime, I don't have guilt that I've given myself space to not feel stressed by my lack of communication. I'm just tired of being stressed.
The book tends to be repetitive in certain chapters, but then the author adds more information. I'm so glad to recommend this source to others in need of healing. We're not alone.
