A pestilence, a burden, a curse: these are all words that can be found in the English dictionary and one day on Kade Patrick's gravestone.

Releasing her debut novel this year, this queer writer (she's both a member of the LGBTQ+ community and also quite strange) has a fondness for poetic prose, witty banter, a twinge of darkness, and a healthy dose of run-on sentences.

Rating: 4/5 (technically 3.5, but rounding up because Goodreads doesn’t do half-stars🙄🙄)

The Witch and the Wicked was a solid read, though it wasn’t quite what I expected. I went in thinking there would be a bigger focus on romance, but let me tell you now—this is much more about the fantasy world than any love story. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re looking for swoon-worthy moments, you won’t find many here.

It did take me a while to get into it. The pacing at the start was a bit slow, and some of the details (like the whole double pupils thing) felt so odd that I couldn’t tell if they were important or just there to be quirky. But as the story unfolded, all those seemingly weird little pieces clicked together in a really satisfying way. By the end, I could appreciate how much thought went into the world-building and how it all tied up 🤌💋🧑‍🍳.

Overall, it’s a good read if you’re into imaginative fantasy with intricate plots. Just manage your expectations if you’re hoping for romance to take center stage.

I love Dystopian Romance and I also love some Fantasy. This book seemed to be right up my alley.

I just don't think I fully clicked with this story. I was really drawn in by the beginning and I was so curious about this world. But after the initial flare of the start. I started to lose interest. I kept trying to get back into it, but it was never as great as I was initially hoping.

I love trying new authors and I would be open to giving this author another go.

The Witch and the Wicked delivers an atmospheric and gripping dark fantasy that keeps readers on edge from start to finish. Set in a harsh, unforgiving landscape of eternal winter, the story follows Rune as she battles not only monstrous foes and human enemies but also her own past and secrets.

The originality of the world-building stands out, with chilling and imaginative monsters adding a fresh twist to the genre. The magic system is intricate yet accessible, seamlessly woven into the story to heighten the stakes. The tension is palpable throughout, with danger lurking in every shadow, and Rune’s stubborn determination to survive makes her a compelling and relatable protagonist.

Patrick balances the dark themes with moments of risky romance and flashes of hope, creating a layered narrative. The moral ambiguity of the characters and the choices they face add depth, making the story both thrilling and thought-provoking.

For fans of dark fantasy with a blend of survival, magic, and complex relationships, The Witch and the Wicked is a must-read. Its originality and tense atmosphere make it a standout in the genre.

THE WITCH AND THE WICKED

🗡 Found family
🗡 Dark fantasy romance
🗡 Non-binary rep
🗡 Banter
🗡 Monsters
🗡 Politics
🗡 Grumpy hero x sunshine bestie
🗡 Slowburn

Don't go into this thinking it is an epic love story, or you will be disappointed. It's there, but romance is a sub-plot. What this is is an epic fantasy story. Kades way of world building was intricate yet easy to understand. The magic systems were unique and added to the greatness of the overall story.

The book starts off with action and a quick pace, but it does slow down from there. Dont let it steer you away. There is a reason behind Kades methods! Everything you learn will tie up beautifully in the end. There is only one spicy scene, and its eas perfectky executed. The mouth on Kane was 🥵 I was SHOCKED.

"F*cₖ ₘₑ Wᵢₜcₕ" did me in! 🔥🔥

Let's talk about character growth. Rune gound the fanily she had been missing after being a solo act in The Colds for years. This family she found in the commune helped her to trust again and find comfort in the company of others. BUT Kane... he started out with such a foul attitude towards Rune. But magic brought them together. After the secret, they found out behind what he had been dealing with for 10 years. No wonder he was grumpy!

Also, The Colds... no, thank you! Im taking execution over being stuck in a dark, cold, dangerous monster infested forest. I guess I am not the hero in this story 🤣

Kade knocked it out of the park for a debut novel! I can't wait to read more of her work!

OKAYYYYY KADE PATRICK!!!!!!

I LOVE Rune!!! She’s such an amazing character with so many layers. At first, she’s so cold and in survival mode. I loved watching her thaw, open up, and become vulnerable as the story continued. Her relationship with the other characters relatable, she’s secretly very caring and viciously loyal to those she loves.

THE BANTER. Rune and Kaineres dialogue had me laughing out loud at some moments. They are both so sarcastic and feed off of one another.

Patrick’s story telling was detailed and well thought out. I felt like I could really picture the environment with their world building and descriptions. The slow burn and moments of yearning made me so giddy. I was giggling and kicking my feet. I definitely did NOT see the twist coming!!

One thing in this book that I did not ask for and hope to never come across again?? The phrase “throat sleeving.” It made me audibly gag and I’m exposing everyone else to it hahaha!!

Overall, I really enjoyed The Witch and The Wicked!! I’ll be recommending it to all of my fantasy book friends!! Thank you Kade Patrick and The Nerd Fam for gifting me this book!!

3.5 rounded up. Thank you to the nerd fam for this arc. The story started off with a bang which I loved. After the first few chapters it slowed down a little bit for me and I personally like my fantasies faster paced. I found my self wondering what the main conflict of the book was for the first third but really enjoyed the slow burn and different monsters

This started out incrediblely interesting but unfortunately, for me personally, it just fizzled out as it progressed. I think I just had an issue with the pacing.

It was definitely true to the slow burn. I prefer things just a bit more fast-paced or I tend to get bored, and that's kind of what happened here. If you don't mind things moving a bit slower this won't be an issue for you at all.

I really loved the world building. The author does a fantastic job at showing rather than telling. It's so descriptive you can close your eyes and picture yourself there seeing exactly what they want you to see.

The character development was really 🤌🤌🤌. The banter between the two just made you want to giggle and kick your feet. It was really nice having their romance play out over the entire story rather than an insta love situation.

You wanna perfect book to read to escape the hell we are currently living in? This is the one, a perfect fantasy standalone with a fantastic story and message, great rep, action, soul, slow burn romance and found family- I loved this story, Kain is so pure and good and Rune is amazing. Some of the lines in this book were so powerful I had to take a minute and process, so so good!

This definitely hit me hard. Rune’s story is brutal—she’s out in this no-man’s-land of endless cold, exiled and hunted, with only her own strength to rely on. Every page felt like it was pulsing with tension; the risks she faces are unrelenting, like there’s no rest, no warmth, nowhere she can feel safe.

Finding the forest commune offers a sliver of peace, but it’s also heartbreaking because you know she might never be fully free. The romance here isn’t sweet or comforting; it’s more like a lifeline she can’t afford to trust, yet she reaches for it anyway, desperate for something real. Rune’s struggle between clinging to her hard-won independence and letting people in feels raw and relatable. This is a story that digs into you and refuses to let go, with every choice Rune makes feeling as intense as the frigid, deadly setting around her.

Honestly, this book felt like standing on a knife’s edge, where hope and despair are constantly in battle. I was hooked from start to finish, swept up by Rune’s fierce will and the sheer danger of her world. It’s haunting, unforgettable, and absolutely worth the read.

I love dystopian books so much. Honestly it’s probably my favorite thing to read and this book was a perfect read.

I received this as an arc from The Nerd Fam and I finally got around to reading it! I’ve been in such a slump and this was perfect to get me out of it!

It started off fast but it just felt a little to slow throughout the ending which is why did not rate this a 5star. I also did not have a connection with the characters besides Rune because her life was a bit brutal.

I definitely would still recommend this!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
Exiled to The Colds has left Rune fighting for her life. From the icy chill of the forest that is subsequently always stuck in winter to the vicious monsters and bandits that hunt her she knows she must find shelter. Stumbling upon a hidden commune amongst a mysterious fog Rune finally gets a taste of security and peace. However when long held secrets that threaten the realm begin to come to light Rune must decide between her small amount of freedom or revealing her own truths.
First I have to say that as a Florida native and lover of all things summer I cannot imagine anything worse than being banished to a land that is forever stuck in winters grasp. Absolutely not, no thank you. So of course when I heard that this was a wintery dystopian fantasy I got out my warmest blanket and prepared to dive into this icy world. The Witch & the Wicked started out incredibly strong with an intriguing premise and I was fully invested in seeing how Rune would combat against all the freezing elements and nasty monsters however the more I read the more I began to lose interest. While the book does have many elements of fantasy novels that I love such as witches, a headstrong FMC, found family, a unique magic system, and interesting world building it somehow all managed to feel flat. I partially feel this was due to the pacing being incredibly slow after that initial interesting start. The ending did add that .5 to the review as it was fast paced but then due to the slower aspects it also ended up feeling rushed. And despite it being on the slower side many of the elements I mentioned above also seemed to be underdeveloped, leaving me with many questions. I also will say that this was initially described as a “dark fantasy” and maybe I’ve just been diving into much darker stories than I realized because I am not quite sure where this one meets that description. Overall I just ended up having the sense that this left much to be desired. Was it a bad book no but did I love it also no. I did find parts to be exciting and enticing just not nearly enough of them for this to be a memorable icy tale.

First i’d like to thank the Nerd Fam for an earc of this book, the following review is My opinion and mine alone.

Things I enjoyed:
- really enjoy the non-binary representation with Sanders, and how casual it was.
- loved the early introduction to the monsters located in the wasteland
- really like all the monsters in this story, i loved the variety and that it really was keeping everyone in the colds on their toes. Monsters of both the human and creature variety
- i really like Rune as our main character, she really keeps the story interesting

Things I disliked:
- the magic system was a little confusing
Overall thoughts:
I think this would make for a really fun suspense movie? Gave me Red Riding Hood the movie vibes?
I loved the writing style and think that I would honesty enjoy the book a whole lot more had I not been in a reading slump while reading this book.

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted arc, all opinions are my own.

This book started with some excitement but quickly fizzled to chapters of filler. This is a post apocalyptic/ dystopian like world where some people can use magic, and some people are magic. And if you are a within, or a wicked, you are being hunted down. Rune is on the run and finds refuge in a commune.

I stopped at about 40%. I’m finding myself forcing chapters and not enjoying the book.

This story follows Rune who has been exiled into this land, where the winter is endless and the monsters are numerous. Everyday is a test of survival for Rune until she stumbles across an old friend Sanders and a hidden commune. She finally has adequate shelter and meals without always being on alert for monsters and soldiers. She finally felt accepted despite people being aware of her exiled status and high bounty on her head in addition to developing a new relationship with Kaineres (witch/commune’s healer), who was also exiled.

The writing style is not for me, it took me a long time to get through this book. The pacing was incredibly slow, especially in the beginning. It didn’t get good until towards the end, which made me give this book an extra star. I did love all the characters and their personal development! Thank you to The Nerd Fam for a copy of this book ✨

4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I want first take the time to thank The Nerd Fam for an ARC of The Witch and The Wicked.

This book by Kade Patrick was such a wonderful breath of fresh air to read. I absolutely loved every second of my time in this world with these characters. I laughed, I yelled, I was immersed and engrained into the story, and I really really hope that this is going to be duology or a trilogy because I WANT MORE.

The Witch & The Wicked and very much a found family Fantasy Romance. We follow our main protagonist Rune, who is banished from her kingdom with a bounty on her head and if forced to live her life in a Forest deemed "The Colds" where she is trying to evade not just mythical scary and intense creatures, but people as well who want to turn her in for her crimes. Along the way she meets The Witch, Kaineres.

The romance between Rune and Kaisers was actually my favorite, there was no "trope" no "enemies to lovers." They are strangers, they meet, their acquaintances, they become friends, they start to establish feelings and then BAM. Such a natural progression that I didn't know I would love as much as I did.

The Witch & The Wicked also has non-binary representation and that was a HUGE happy surprise. I had JUST had a conversation with a non-binary friend who shared that they wish there were more chatters like them in fantasy books and romance books. Even if it's just a side character. Just reading someone like them would be very refreshing. So meeting Sanders our non-binary character? IMMEDIATELY, recommend to my friend and it's next of their list.

I am truly hoping that this isn't a stand alone. I am not 100% sure though, because the book kind of ended on a finality, but like a finality with some questions. I would love to see how we proceed from here with maybe a new plot? I just really loved this world and the magic system and I want more!!!!

Spice: 🌶🌶

Tropes:
Found family
Unique magic system
Grumpy X sunshine
Endless winter
Monsters
Banished criminals
Multiple POV

I just wrapped up The Witch & the Wicked and I found myself really enjoying the characters! The FMC is Rune. She's been banished to The Colds, where it's endless winter and Monsters galore. she eventually runs into her friend Sanders and together they find a commune in The Colds to become a part of. What unfolds after is one of found family and secrets. Just when Rune seems to be getting comfortable, looks like a mission to save the Kingdom who has a bounty on her head arises.

Rune is Grumpy and a bad ass in one lol. She knows how to weld a knife and she has a secret. She's a Wicked- meaning she is magic. She didn't have to go to school and learn it, she is it. And she's living guilty out in The Colds for past transgressions.

The MMC is Kaineres. He's an ex-Witch (someone who went to school to learn magic) and he's got his own guilty conscience. He lives as a healer in the commune Rune and Sanders comes across. I really liked Kain. Especially the last few chapters haha. I just wanted to hug him while reading.

Sanders is sushine. They're funny and bring warmth to this cold world. And then there's others like Arrow, Sora, and more that make this a good story because you really dislike or love them. Hahaha.

The magic system was different in TW&TW and I'm excited to see where the story goes in book 2.

✨ ARC REVIEW ✨

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Witch & The Wicked by Kade Patrick is a spellbinding standalone that pulls you into a world of found family, corrupted monsters, and a touch of dark romantasy. The “she saved him” trope? 👏 Perfection.

The FMC’s journey from isolation in The Colds to learning how to trust again was truly inspiring, filled with growth and emotional depth. 💜 While the pacing gave me a bit of whiplash at times—slow moments followed by rushed action—the story still came together beautifully in the end. And those quotes? 🔥 They hit straight to the heart! 🖤

If you love found family, morally complex characters, and just a hint of romance, The Witch & The Wicked is for you!

📚 Huge thanks to @thenerdfam for the ARC! 🤓💕

The first few chapters of this story had me hooked. I was drawn in and ready for the tale of the girl who was banished to the monster filled tundra and ready to see how she survived. And then it just kind of fizzled out.

There were definite pacing issues with the story. We spent the majority of the book in the commune watching Rune's relationships grow but then when the secret of her banishment is revealed, there's about four pages of "HOW COULD YOU!? I forgive you". Almost all of the action and romance happen in the last 10% of the book. There isn't a cliffhanger, but it definitely sets up a sequel. While I think the story had an interesting plot and decently fleshed out characters, it felt like it could use a bit of rearranging and polishing to make it great.

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

While not a bad story, I just don't think it was for me. I liked the aspects of the found family and the slow burn romance (one spicy scene). Also maybe my bar is skewed but it didn't read that dark to me lol. The ending wrapped up in a way I enjoyed.

I really struggled with the pacing. It started out okay but then really slowed down for me until towards the end. There were a few times where it felt like the story just jumped and I found myself going back to figure if I had missed something. I think if some parts had been a bit more fleshed out this would have been a really solid read for me.

This book is a dark fantasy with a dystopian vibe. The world somewhat reminded me of The Prison Healer, instead of the prison being the center of the map, it was a forest. The story is a mix of magic and survival and set in a cold atmosphere, filled with various monsters. The world building is fantastic and unique. I really liked the magic system. The FMC personality felt a little annoying at times but they grew on me. The MMC dialogue felt uncharacteristic sometimes, which was odd, but it felt a little like the attraction was feeling forced sometimes. Overall, it was unique and I enjoyed it. I would read more.

This was a fantastic debut novel! You get sucked in immediately with an action packed start and stay for the amazing character growth and unique storyline. With dual pov (mostly), found family in The Colds (which are brutal btw), great banter, grumpy sunshine aspect with our MC’s and the right kind of slow burn anyone who likes any of that will thoroughly enjoy this book. I’m grateful to have received a gifted ARC from The Nerd Fam, but I’m even more grateful to have discovered this new author THANK YOU!

4.75 stars!

Fans of One Dark Window, listen up! If you loved the spooky, misty world of ODW, this is the book for you! This is a dark fantasy with a bit of romance. Set in a fantasy world with several different kingdoms, but in the middle is the creepy and I forgiving Colds.

This book is for you if you love:
*Dual POV
*Slooooow burn. But the pay off was soooo worth it!
*Grumpy FMC who doesn't trust anyone
*Anxious MMC witch who doesn't want to fight anyone and would rather heal those who are hurt
*Found family
*Spooky foggy forest
*Creepy AF monsters. Shit from nightmares
*Curses
*Mixed up memories
*Rising up against those in power to create a better world for all

This is book one of a series! Which is awesome because I was left wanting more!

A very very late review. Better late than never.

I absolutely loved reading this. And I’m so upset that I waited this long to do so. I’m always a sucker for fantasy books but those that can create an entirely different world and make it feel real, unbelievable. The details of the world, the magic, the monsters—I could imagine all of it. The character growth was even better. Rune, Sanders, Kain-all of the side characters, I was so intrigued by them all. The book kept my attention and kept me wanting to know more about what was happening. It was medium paced for me but action packed. I don’t typically enjoy slow burn romance as much but the way it played out in this story was perfection. I’m so glad there will be a second book. Highly recommend to read.

i really liked the premise of this novel, and i was hooked as soon as i started reading. i’m a sucker for literally EVERY trope that this book has, and i was so happy to see it all done in a unique way with a world and characters that i adore 🖤

the characters were stunning (the found family was found familying), the writing and world-building were so descriptive (without being overwhelming), the magic system was well-thought out and intriguing. i need more of it 🧍🏽‍♀️

now kaineres and rune, omfg the slow burn was slow burning 🙂‍↕️ the banter had me giggling and kicking my feet; the tension and spice were so SO good ✋🏽🙂‍↕️ both have their flaws and seeing their characters develop while traversing hellish terrain was very important TO ME!! give me a bamf fmc and a mmc who can handle his shit (and be in touch with his emotions) ANY DAY.

if you read this, you get:
✶ dark fantasy
✶ slow burn
✶ found family
✶ banter
✶ monsters

Honestly....

I am super impressed that this is the first book from this author! Kade needs to write more and faster so I can read more of her their work!

The Witch & the Wicked is a dark fantasy the follows Rune throughout her journey in The Colds and her redemption. Rune must face down blood thirsty monsters, bandits and soldiers from her former kingdom hunter her down. She stumbles upon a hidden commune where she finds community. A long hidden secret is discovered that could change the world as she knows it to only for herself but for the friends she has made in the commune. Follow along this thrilling ride of survival and love to see what happens to Rune!

I highly enjoyed this book! I thought that pacing was great and I did not lose interest. I was invested in the characters and their development throughout the book. There was plenty of twists and holding of my breath as well as quickening of my heart while reading. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a dark fantasy with a little sprinkle of romance!

I will be patiently waiting for Kade's next book. :)

“You never need to apologize for existing as you are, Your magic and you are not separate entities. You are magic, magic is you, and the rest of the world covets and fears what they do not know.”

This is a dark fantasy that has many monsters, never ending winter, slow burn romance, and a very strong wmc who will do anything for those she loves.

Rune is easy to relate to and the authors world building puts us right into the thick of the commune that the exiled have made.

There are a lot of moments I didn’t expect to happen. This debut novel by Kade Patrick is sure to turn all heads.

When I say I’m obsessed with this book, I mean truly obsessed. I have not stopped thinking about it since I finished!

This is a dark fantasy romance with interesting world building, a very cool magic system, found family, winter gothic vibes, & a sub-plot of a slow burn swoon worthy romance. This book was so well written I loved every minute of it. The book does slow down during the middle portion, but I personally didn’t mind.

Our FMC Rune is such an interesting character that you have to learn to love as the story progresses. Our MMC Kain is the definition of grumpy but also such a deeply feeling character. But they come together through hardship & magic.

This I truly one of my favorite reads of the year & I can’t wait to read more of the authors work! I received an ARC of this through The Nerd Fam, so thank you so much for the opportunity to read.
