The Sundered Fates #1

A Bargain of Smoke and Vines

Rate this book
In the Sundered Kingdoms, we who tend the Grove do not concern ourselves with what lies beyond our borders. Our purpose is to mend and to grow and as the firstborn daughter, I, Amara Tyne, am princess to our people.

But our lands and earthen powers have fallen under the hungry gaze of a would-be usurper, who demands we bend the knee in his quest to take control of this world. Our only hope for survival is an alliance with the fearsome Mordorin Fae, who rule the Sundered Kingdoms with an iron fist. To keep our freedom and protect the Grove, a bargain must be struck, but there is just one thing the Mordorin want… a bride fit for their wicked crown prince, Daedalus Phaedren.

To save my people from destruction, I must leave the lush green of my home and live out my days in the stronghold of Baev’kalath, serving as wife to a heartless killer. But there are secrets within these castle walls, and the rebel army marches ever closer. If I must fight, then I must place myself where I dread most. At Daed’s side.

✔️ Fae & Magic
✔️ Court Intrigue & Secrets
✔️ Enemies to Lovers
✔️ Slow Burn ❤️‍🔥
✔️ Steamy 🌶️
✔️ Arranged Marriage
📚 Books with similar vibes: A Deal with the Elf King, Arranged Marriages of the Fae series, The Hurricane Wars.

Plot & Writing Quality:
Dark fantasy, political drama, morally gray characters, and a FMC who takes no shit. The world-building? Impeccable. I felt transported..wandering through lush forests, caught in castle intrigue, and bracing myself for battles that felt like Shadow and Bone on steroids. The tension, the stakes, the secrets? Next-level. 😮‍💨 I could feel danger lurking around every corner. Think 'The Bridge Kingdom' meets 'A Deal with the Elf King'—arranged marriages, high-stakes power plays, and a heroine who has to wield her gifts to survive. If you’re into morally gray love interests, dark fae politics, and arranged marriages steeped in danger, this book is worth the read. There were some rough edges but the ending left me desperate for answers. 🖤✨

Characters:
Amara (FMC) is a force—a princess with earth magic who will sacrifice everything to protect her people. And Daedalus Phaedren (MMC) 🖤? He’s giving dark, brooding prince (with a side of messy family drama straight out of Succession). And some of his lines...damn. Mouth watering. 🫠💦❤️‍🔥

Their chemistry is 🔥 but complicated, and while the spice is there, it felt a little…undercooked? The, will-they-won't-they, will keep you invested but the tension in their relationship sometimes lacked payoff. For instance, I struggled with how easily Amara forgave Daedalus after his major betrayal (and when I say major, I mean MAJOR). A deeper confrontation between them would have made their eventual reconciliation more impactful. It felt too quick given the emotional baggage between them.

The side characters also shine, adding depth to the story—Zyphoro’s fire, Arax’s loyalty, and Solena’s quiet strength all stood out. There's drama and loyalty (and heartbreak 😭). And that cliffhanger? Brutal. I’m still reeling.

The first half of the book is pretty good - I enjoyed the unfolding of the looming threat but the MMC is an awful character. I LOVE a good morally grey man but this guy can’t be considered that- wouldn’t even consider him “morally black will kill everyone to keep her safe” … he didn’t want to keep her safe and wasn’t going to? And she forgave him so quickly without an explanation it really didn’t make sense that she would forgive him and for him to continue to be the love interest

I just finished *A Bargain of Smoke and Vines*, and I couldn’t put it down! It was like that one bag of chips you think you can resist but end up devouring in one sitting—minus the crumbs and regret.

The storyline? Absolutely gripping! The characters? They’re so well-developed that I half-expected them to show up for dinner. Amara, in particular, is a total powerhouse. She’s got more love to give than a golden retriever at a petting zoo, and she manages to show kindness even to those who’ve wronged her. Honestly, she might be too nice; I’d be plotting my revenge with a side of popcorn!😈😈

Now, let’s talk about ❤️Solena and Orios❤️. Their love story is beautiful and full of twists! They have to hide their relationship in the dark because Orios is a reaper, and they’re forbidden from getting involved. Talk about a relationship with some serious drama! But Amara knows their secret and keeps it safe, proving she’s not just a fierce friend; she’s a ride-or-die best friend for life!🙌🙌

And then there’s the love story between Daed and Amara. 🤩Wow! It’s so intense that I found myself yelling at my Kindle for them to hurry up and get it on! 😉The way Amara changes Daed is incredible—he’s head over heels for her and would do anything for her, even if it means getting his hands dirty. Seriously, at one point, I was convinced he’d pull a *Romeo and Juliet* and go full tragic hero.🤣

And let’s not forget the part where Daed gifts Amara a pet kitten made of smoke. He tells her that the kitten will watch over her and protect her at all costs. But here’s the kicker: when that little furball transforms, it’s a beast—a giant lion with wings! I mean, who wouldn’t want a pet that can go from cuddly to fierce in a heartbeat?

Overall, I devoured this book like it was the last slice of pizza at a party, and I highly recommend it. If you enjoy wild stories and characters that feel like they could walk right off the page, this book is for you!

Waiting patiently for book 2 🥰

A Captivating Journey Worth the Wait

I was pulled into this book months before its release date after I saw an edit of the book, which grasped me instantly, leaving me with a hunger for months while the book was being finished. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!!! Every element of this book delivered exactly as I had hoped.
From the very first page, I was transported into a world so beautifully crafted and immersive, I couldn’t tear myself away. The characters are wonderfully complex, each with their own unique depth, and the plot is both thrilling and emotionally resonant. The pacing was perfect, keeping me on the edge of my seat, yet also allowing for moments of reflection and growth.
The writing is nothing short of mesmerizing. The author’s voice shines through every sentence, making even the simplest moments feel profound. The world-building was masterful, with details so vivid I felt as though I could step into it myself.

I went into this book with high expectations, and I can say without a doubt that it exceeded them. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK✨

Sadly, this started out promising and quickly fell flat. The author has talent with writing. However, the storyline lacks much needed depth. Everything feels vaguely surface level. The romance develops abruptly without any rhyme or reason. It’s so abrupt I couldn’t see how this wasn’t some sort of fated mates situation. The connection they foster while away from the main castle is literally just summarized for us in half a chapter followed by the MMC departing for several chapters. This leaves the reader majorly uninvested in the relationship. Why wouldn’t we be shown scenes of this crucial development, when they are actually supposed to be falling in love, vs told with a few sentences of high level summary?? The romance is clearly the focal point of this book. The choice to summarize these details was truly baffling to me and I had a hard time recovering. Amara’s backstory lacks similar depth. Her life in the Grove is barely fleshed out and her character suffers for it. Then there’s Daed. He is completely underdeveloped as a character. I didn’t understand any of his motivations or limited personality traits (moody seems to be his main personality trait with little else shown to us as readers). The final straw though was the pregnancy storyline. I really believe only a small minority of readers actually enjoy a pregnancy trope. The rest of us just suffer through it if the plot is compelling enough. I will say the author has skill with words and I enjoyed the side characters that seemed better developed than the actual main characters. Overall, this book just really missed the mark for me despite having a lot of the ingredients I normally enjoy.

What a riveting read! This book is an action-packed adventure with surprises in every twist. Each layer is rich with character and plot development. The dynamic between Daed and Amara was captivating; watching their love story unravel kept me so intrigued. Couldn’t put it down, and definitely cannot wait for the next book to come out.

Devoured this!

It was well paced, had great world building, intrigue and epic romantic tension. The main character (Amara) was a woman who would do whatever she had to for her people and I loved her. The dark prince was equal parts morally grey and complicated...sigh.

Hoping there is a sequel in the works, I desperately want to re-enter the Sundred Kingdom!

Re-read 1/29/26

Reread when I realized book two had come out but remembered nothing about book one. Still super annoyed with some of the things Amara did and the fact that she jumped to conclusions without talking to Daed first . But I had totally forgotten some of the truly awesome moments too.

Original review:

Not perfect*, but wow...that ending! Can't wait for book two.

Genuinely so disappointed. I was so excited to start reading it but it just fell flat to me. I wish we could have gotten more of Amara at The Grove and more of a backstory on that. Daed was such a letdown and I feel like the romance aspect was rushed. Like one chapter she doesn’t like him and the next she misses him when he’s gone. I also don’t like the baby trope. Like the whole point of her being there is to have a baby and then she’s gonna get sacrificed and she just forgives Daed. Like in a span of two minutes of them having a conversation. Idk super disappointed

I couldn't get enough of this book. This is exactly what I look for in a story. This is action-packed, with magic and very creepy vibes. Amara was taken from her home to marry the prince Daed so that she could save her people. That whole family and all the creepiness from the castle had me on the edge of my seat. I'm dying for book 2!

Amara is on a ship heading to the island to marry the prince in a marriage of convenience. She is strong and smart, human but living amongst the fae. I’m immediately intrigued by the fantasy world that begins at sea.

The minor spelling errors in the story are distracting but I’m curious enough to know what happens. Wow, that first part of the story is action-packed and this Jewel is a true heroine.

The Fae are something and portrayed as dark soulless creatures who only get a thrill from bloodshed and savagery. She is thrust into this unknown fortress and marriage and must navigate this world to save hers.

Daedalus is morally grey, tall, dark, and fae. We know not much about him.

Amara is delusional we know she has some form of earth magic and healing abilities but the things she sees and only seems to connect with make me wonder if she is seeing things or if they are real.

The princess's life is fraught with danger in this gloomy stronghold and her hubby couldn’t be more uninterested. Daedus starts to make more sense now that his past is shared but he still struggles. Oh, things get steamy finally.

So now the princess is seeing things again are they real or just figments of her imagination? This story gets dark in theme as we find out more about Daed and Mordorian people.

The grove sounds wonderful but even this majestic place is filled with betrayal, war, and chaos. Amara surrounded by friends starts to find herself but can she be strong enough to save it?

This story has a nice catch to the reader but it reads very fantasy and almost historical as the characters sometimes speak as if they are from nations long ago. I do like the enemies-to-lovers tropes and of course the marriage of convenience. The powers they have and their connection to both nature and darkness are interesting and well done throughout the book.

This book is okay there are parts of it that are amazing and some parts seem to be excessive but it does tell an interesting fantasy romance story with royalty, dark themes, and an arranged marriage.

I loved this book! At the beginning, I figured it would be just another fae romantasy but it really brought me in.

A human, Amara, is bargained off to be the bride of the wicked fae prince to bring protection to her land. She knows what sacrifice she is making but will do it to save her people from the Legion, a group of humans bent on destroying everything, fae or human. Entering a new land and kingdom, she struggles to adjust to the dark and coldness of her new home. It doesn’t help that her new husband, Daed, gives off mixed signals every moment of every day. One moment he ignores her and abandons her, the next he’s whispering sweetness in her ear about how he desires her. Amara doesn’t know what to believe or who to trust in this new world. There is darkness that creeps around and Amara begins to unravel the dangerous secrets and vicious betrayals that lurk within the castle walls.

Amara—what I love about her character is she’s a little bit of both warrior princess but also vulnerable and a little (only a little) damsel in distress sometimes too. She’s headstrong but also listens to her heart. A FMC for once that I’m annoyed at.

Daed—he’s a complex character in a good way. He has this darkness inside of him that he fights tooth and nail everyday, but when he does break free, he’s not afraid to show Amara his true love and devotion for her. New book husband, check!

Side characters—Aarax is my ❤️ just absolutely adore him. Solena and Orios are this perfect little side couple that I want more of in book 2. I hope we get more of Orios in general, I think he could be this great character.

Also, who doesn’t love a book with a cute furry sidekick to defend our FMC? Ashen ❤️

The ending is a little predictable in some aspects (not all, there was one twist I didn’t expect) and didn’t necessarily end on a cliff hanger but set up the events for book 2, which I can’t wait to read!

🧝🏻‍♀️🧚‍♂️🍃TikTok made me…. And I’m SOOOO happy it did! 🍃🧚‍♂️🧝🏻‍♀️

This is a true fantasy enemies to lovers but still enemies romance with so many twists and turns you won’t want to put it down!

The story focuses on a young human who is gifted by the magic forest she lives in with healing powers, but her home is threatened and she volunteers to marry the vicious scary fae winged prince to save her people. I know your thinking we’ve heard this story before, and yes it does have vibes from a certain fantasy romance we all know and love *cough cough* (ACOTAR) but it’s a completely different plot and take. It actually reminds me more of A Crown of Oaths and Curses by J Bree which I also loved.

Loved both the main characters (Daed and Amara) they were both written well, the whole book is in Amaras POV so we got to see character growth from her and her perspective of the world she has been forced into.

Loved the plot, was well thought out, there was a good pace and the ‘info dump’ bits were written well into the story so you weren’t having to re read it 10 times to make sure you have absorbed it all 😄👌.

The side characters are well written as well, particular shout out to Zyphoro the killer queen 👸. Her crazy honestly gave me life!

There’s definitely some trauma towards the end of the book which broke my heart, but we’re all masochists here so of course I loved some of it 🤌🤣. I will say it’s not a super spicy book but it’s got a couple of chilli peppers in there, these were the only scenes that I think could have been written a bit more descriptively but again it’s me being a picky spicy scene lover 🤪.

Overall great read, and I’m really excited for the next instalment.

Thank you to Book Sirens and J.L. Tomlinson for the ARC.

Plot 3.5/5
Characters 3.75/5
Ending 3.75/5
Interest 4.25/5

Overall 3.75/5

-I actually quite liked this book. The plot was intriguing even though it took me a few pages to really get into it and understand what was going on. I really liked the world that the story was set in and the contacts between fae and humans even though the humans aren’t exactly the humans we are accustomed too. It made things interesting. I wish that there was more plot to the story and that there was a real set end goal, because it kind of started off at one point and the whole book was just how life is for the characters, which was nice but I needed more. But more, I do not mean a pregnancy. I hate the pregnancy trope, any variation of it, so I had to dock my rating a bit because of that. Personal preferences.

-I actually hated every single character at first, I can’t really think of a character I liked when they were first introduced except maybe Amara. I was quite neutral about her but didn’t immediately love her. Hated everyone else until they eventually started warming up to me. I feel like everyone started off as cruel and then just started loving Amara for some reason. The relationship between her and Daed was interesting and there some fun elements to read about but I wasn’t completely enamoured by it.

-The ending had many plot twists which were really intriguing and they were surprising, I didn’t spend my time guessing what would happen next because I felt like this book was quite predictable and ’normal’ so the plot twist worked on me. The ending itself does leave for questions and curiosity but I don’t feel like I must read a sequel now. I can be patient.

Thank you NetGalley and J.L. Tomlinson for the opportunity to review this book. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed everything in this book except the romance. Which is unfortunate as it is a large part of the book. The world, the magic of Amara and her people along with that of the Fae was quite interesting. You don’t get much info on the rebel army that is trying to take over the Grove, nor of their elusive leader. As far as the romance goes, you aren’t really told how much time passes during the book. And Amara talks about Daed and the things he has supposedly done (her being confused by his conflicting behaviors towards her) but we only see this happen a time or two. So her continuing to go on and on about this is a bit annoying. I also don’t do well with romances where physical attraction is all that matters and supersedes your hate for someone else. So they can be the worst person ever, but we are going to overlook that (just this one time, not really) because they are so hot. Then when they do learn about each other and seem to have a real connection, there is a third act ‘breakup’. Daed has done something horrible, never apologizes and is forgiven with no consequences. I loved all the characters in and of themselves, I loved the world, the pacing was great. There are multiple betrayals from different characters and a plot twist with a cliffhanger ending. I will likely read book 2 as I truly did enjoy the majority of the story. The execution of the romance just didn’t do it for me. However, I will say, for many this romance will be 5 stars. So don’t not read it just because of my dislike for it. It will definitely work for a lot of readers.

This book is absolutely breathtaking! A Bargain of Smoke and Vines is the kind of fantasy romance that hooks you from the start and keeps you up way too late because you just have to know what happens next. The characters are so easy to fall in love with, especially the heroine—she’s strong, smart, and incredibly relatable. And the male fae? Let’s just say he’s the perfect mix of seductive, powerful, and oh-so-conflicted. Their chemistry is off the charts, with just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting.

One of the things I loved most was the pacing—it’s perfect. The story is detailed enough to pull you into this lush, magical world, but it never drags or feels slow (unlike some other books that can take forever to get going—looking at you, A Court of Thorns and Roses). The world-building is incredible, with vivid descriptions that make you feel like you’re right there, walking through vine-covered forests or navigating dangerous fae courts.

The side characters are amazing too! There are some wonderful, unexpected friendships that add so much heart to the story. They’re not just there to fill space—they have depth and their own stories, which makes everything feel even more real.

If you’re into fantasy romance with enchanting writing, great pacing, and a love story that’s full of tension, passion, and emotional depth, you need to read this book. A Bargain of Smoke and Vines completely blew me away, and I can’t wait to read more from J.L. Tomlinson. March can’t get here soon enough.

Ok, I ate this up! I have fucked myself over as I have to wait until March for the 2nd book.
I came across this author on tiktok, and her posts made me want to read this book and be in this world. It did not disappoint.

I have so much to say, but to convince people to read this book, I would only need this:

"His eyes lock into mine, burning with an intensity that turns my blood cold.
""And I will unmake everything in existence if that's what it takes to get close to you. Is that what you want?""

"You would threaten the entire world for something as insignificant as word from me?"

His eyes burn into mine, unblinking. "Can you imagine what I would do for a touch?".

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The way my panties would drop. Immediately.

I love Amara. I loved watching her coming into her power and I can't wait to see what she is capable of next book!

Daed can get it. I really loved him and even when I was so mad at him, the sexy bastard made me love him more.

I am so glad this is a duet. I hate when an author writes about 1 couple for more than 2 or 3 books. As much as I love them, I think less is more. I find after too many books, they get lost. I'm looking at you, JLA.

I love seeing powerful couples working together to defeat an enemy. I love that they sacrifice for each other, I enjoy the spice, the magic, and I love their HEA.

Just 1 thing: Daed, your mouth needs to get a bit dirtier! We love our shadow daddies FILTHY 🫠

📖✨ Book Review: A Bargain of Smoke and Vines by J.L. Tomlinson

🔥 Plot: 5⭐ | Spice: 2⭐ | Enemies to Lovers: 3⭐ | Overall: 3.8⭐ 🔥

A Bargain of Smoke and Vines is a gripping fantasy filled with court intrigue, power struggles, and dark magic. 👑⚔️ The plot is phenomenal—twists, tension, and danger at every turn. The pacing? Perfect. No unnecessary filler, just non-stop action that keeps you turning the pages! 📖💨

🌿 The world-building is fantastic! The Mordorin court is richly detailed, and the tension between the fae and humans makes for a compelling backdrop. Amara, our FMC, goes from peace-loving and idealistic to a fierce survivor who refuses to back down. Her journey? Captivating. 👏

💔 Now, about the romance… While there’s an enemies-to-lovers dynamic, it feels a bit rushed. 😕 The slow burn, tension, and angst that make this trope shine aren’t fully there. One moment it’s “I hate you,” and the next, it’s “I love you.” That being said, the side characters? Absolutely amazing. 🫶 They add depth, loyalty, and emotional stakes to the story.

💀 The ending hits HARD. Just when you think things are settling, bam—a cliffhanger that will have you desperate for the next book. If you love court politics, dark magic, and fierce heroines who refuse to break, this one is worth picking up! ✨📚

Would I read the next book? Absolutely. Am I still salty about some of the rushed elements? Yes. But the story itself has too much potential to ignore! 🤯🔥

You know that feeling when you pick up a book, thinking you’ll just read a few chapters before bed, and suddenly it’s 2 AM, and you’re bargaining with yourself to read just one more? That was A Bargain of Smoke and Vines for me.

JL Tomlinson pulled me in from the very first page, weaving a story that felt both familiar and fresh. If you love A Court of Thorns and Roses, you’re going to devour this. It has that same intoxicating mix of dark bargains, tension-filled romance, and a world that feels lush and dangerous all at once. There’s something about stories where a strong-willed heroine is thrown into an uneasy alliance with a powerful, mysterious force that just hits every time and this book delivers that in spades.

The magic system, the intrigue, and the slow-burn tension kept me hooked. I loved how the world felt richly built without overwhelming me with endless exposition. The characters had depth, the stakes felt high, and the relationships; both romantic and otherwise; were compelling enough to make me feel genuinely invested.

Honestly, if you’re a fan of fantasy romance with a touch of danger, courtly intrigue, and a heroine who refuses to be a pawn in anyone’s game, this book is it. I already know I’ll be thinking about this story long after I’ve turned the last page.

Very sorry I am late with this ARC review but my brain just refused to cooperate with me on ARCs in the last two months of the year, especially since I had a lot of ARCs come through at the same time. Panic is not my best friend sadly.

Took me a while to read this I admit. There is slow-burn (although to be real, slow burn doesn't really go slow?) enemies to lovers which worked up to a point. I am very sad to say that I did not vibe with the MMC. The betrayal... I would not forgive.

And this book contains a trope that I am absolutely not for, so I am aware that these things heavily impacted my reading overall, but hey, I know what I like and what I don't. If it only wasn't for this trope, ah, I'm so sad about it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to Netgalley and the author.
