Some original readers’ comments give opinions and insights into the story:
> Alex & Drew is a tale of a boy’s journey from utter despair to finding his sanctuary in the arms of an equally wonderful supportive partner. It delves into the mind of Alex trying to cope with his abuse and finding his way in the world of recovery and love.
> Very deep and moving story. So much suffering that it makes you hurt for all those who suffer abuse and have no one to help them.
> If I could give this this book more stars I would .Simply it was an amazing rollercoaster of emotions for me. It had me in tears numerous times, for the good and for the bad times suffered by these two wonderful souls.
> A story of two young men in need of the love and support the other offers to heal and recover.
> This is a touching story that transcends the tragedy and darkness at its core. The author did a beautiful job of focusing on the more positive notes of hope, love and healing while still acknowledging the pain, betrayal, fear, hate and anger that you know are present under these circumstances.
> Touching - if sometimes difficult - and beautifully written. I just loved Drew and his family, who could so clearly see the diamond in the rough that was Alex.
Professionally, I write articles for various accounts around the world. Recreationally, I write sexy gay YA and M/M romance stories, some with a degree of mystery/suspense or murder/suspense themes.
Over recent years I've counselled and assisted a large number of gay youths in Australia and some overseas. My contribution to the M/M Romance Group's video in support of the 'It Gets Better' project provides some detail, commencing at the 7 mins 55 secs mark here: http://www.goodreads.com/videos/15564...
Struggled with this, at the beginning we're told it was based on a true story and yet the whole story feels off to me and un-realistic. The dialogue doesn't feel natural and the writing style is too flowery for a story that features abuse.
Alex had ADHD yet reading his symptoms my first thought was medicated tourettes and then when attacks were mentioned I wondered if he was epileptic, it sounds like panic attacks more than anything. He comes across a lot younger than his supposed eighteen years. Add in the secret den and pet turtle and it's a Boy's Own adventure story. Drew faces an armed man then goes for a lovely refrseshing swim and all's ok with the world...
Alex's mother is a non-functioning alcholic, his step-father openly aggresive and yet they've managed to successfully convince the community including the police, church, hospital that Alex's claims of abuse are down to his ADHD?
Drew is a white knight character, they're instantly touching and watching porn without it seeming to bother Alex. Drew's father happens to be a top criminal lawyer, when everything is revealed Alex it seems has lots of money, and in his dreams his dead dad approves his match.
I tried - I really tried to like it - the author had put time and love into the story and offered it for free. But I just couldn't - I finished because I don't believe in reviews without reading it but it was...sugarsweet unbelievable.
It was constructed, nearly nothing felt real and it was so over the top sweetened, the dialogues stilted. I found different unbelievable reactions - like "it was okay for Drew to rub his dick in Alex's crack"...duh, sorry, I can't believe it. The characters reminded me of Victorion swooning heroines, not 19 year old guys. And how all miracelously fell into place...duh..there were two things missing (or I have overread them because in the end I found it hard to concentrate): Alex's father appearing as ghost and giving his blessing and the nice nurse offering to be the surrogate mother for their kids.
It's often been critizied that woman write "chicks with dicks" in m/m - well, if Justin South really is a guy, he has proved that guys obviously can do that even better.
This kind of story is nothing for me - if you like overromanced ones - try it.
This story's simplistic writing style doesn't mesh well with the unpleasant subject matter, and the characters sound like they are in their pre-teens rather than 18 and 19 years old. But the references to Alex's ADHD were what made me stop reading. Alex attributes his tics, stammers, shakes, and garbled words to ADHD. A bit later in the story, when he has an "ADHD attack" (resembling a panic attack), I laughed out loud. I'm pretty sure the author didn't intend for that scene to be humorous, but there's something about the phrase "ADHD attack" that just strikes me as funny. I imagine legions of hyperactive children wrecking havoc.
(July) I wanted to like this - I mean, it's a freebie and I know the author worked hard on it - but I found it poorly written and it just felt dated, somehow. At the beginning I thought Alex was about 12, considering his actions and dialogue.
A tender coming-of-age story about an 18-year-old boy brutally traumatized by abuse and isolated and ostracized by schoolmates and townspeople. Alex feels all alone in the world after his father dies. His mother has remarried to a man who sexually abuses Alex in the most brutal way. His mother not only turns a blind eye to the abuse, but claims Alex’s assertions are lies when he reports his abuse to authorities. Alex quietly endures his abuse from day to day until Drew moves to town and befriends him. Drew is the complete opposite of Alex. Popular, smart, athletic and from a loving family, Drew has a heart of gold and is instantly taken with Alex. The story details their journey from friendship to love to healing and ultimately justice. Beautifully written in Aussie English, Alex and Drew is a treasure with a wonderful happy ending.
I just couldn't connect with this story. The dialogue was oddly formal in places while the narrative was 'slangy'. The MCs seemed a lot younger in the flashback to their first meeting and I was surprised to find out they were 19 and 18.

I've been having such a hard time knowing how to word this review, and going back and forth over how many stars to give it and so on.
I appreciate Mr. South's attempt at dealing with such difficult subject matter. And I read at the end that he's considering working it into a novel. Which actually earned the 2nd star from me. If ever there were a story in need of a good editor, this is it.
And I really appreciate the stated intent behind the story: to help people in difficult situations see that life gets better. However, if that is the real intent, it seems that it would have been more impactful if the happy ending were a touch more plausible.
The story is good. However, having to look past the writing and the characterization and all of the ridiculousness included had me almost giving up on it over and over again.
The characters are far too juvenile to be believable. They meet when Drew comes across Alex crouched sobbing in the bushes and clutching his pet turtle, Paddles. That, combined with the conversations the boys proceed to have, about having to be home at a certain time, or whatever, had me guessing they were 12, maybe 13. Simply telling me that they are, in fact, 18 and 19 doesn't make it believable. Especially when one invites the other to "sleep over" for the weekend, and even gets his mother's permission.
There were also a couple of things that had me laughing--during what should have been intense, emotional scenes. "Attacks" of ADHD was one, as another reviewer mentioned. The other was Drew's reaction when Alex tells a hushed room full of doctors and police officers about what his stepfather had done to him. Alex says "Oh god, no." Which was totally believable. But he didn't just say it, he "screamed over the rest of the commotion in the room." Really? And when Alex adds something else, Drew "wailed again." I did feel bad about it, but that reaction was just too ridiculous not to laugh at.
Anyway, so the point of this is, deep down the heart of the story's good. With a good editor it could be really good.
If I could give ths this book more stars I would .Simply it was an amzing rollercoaster of emotions for me. It had me in tears numerous times. for the good and for the bad times suffered by these two wonderul souls . Justin thannkyou so much for this superb tale of a mans journey from utter despair to finding his sanctuary in the arms of an equally wonderful supportive partner. This is the story of Alex, a timid abused country boy who meets Drew a city boy with a heart of gold.It deleves into the mind of Alex trying to cope with his abuse and finding his way in the world of recovery and love. Drew is amazingly strong and gentle, the glue that keeps alex together.I loved both characters so much , and hey I knew I loved drew but a man who dunks his tim tams, words cannot express that little tid bit. I truley hope we see more of Alex and Drew purhaps even a story of Beau, fingers crossed s*... finally do yourself a favour and be swept away with the beautiful words justin has put to paper. It will move you , stir you up and sweep you away into what life is all about. Moving forward trusting others and finally finding yourself. Lets hope all the Alex:s out there find their Drew and help them to step into the light
Part of Love is Always Write - Volume 1 While I think it is great the author has tackled a really sensitive and important issue such as abuse, I found this story a bit lacking. Perhaps a longer novel would have more adequately addressed some of the issues such as how Alex recovered from his long-term trauma as the ending seemed a little unrealistic. I was also a little confused as to Alex's ADHD and why no one accepted him because of this. From the way the story was written he actually seemed a bit slow and emotionally backward. This is why I found the earlier scenes when he meets Drew a bit unrealistic. Drew, a university student studying law, did not behave and respond to Alex as I would have expected. The dialogue was also unnatural. However I still enjoyed the story and the Australian setting, although some references and slang may confuse a global audience. Finally, got to like a book that includes eating Tim Tams!
OMG! How beautiful! I'm still crying....with joy! This is definitely going in my TBR book folder!
This book is a must read for anyone who loves to read of true compassion and true love.
Fleeing an abusive stepfather, Alex is found hovering in the tall grass on the side of a dirt road by Drew. They quickly become friends. Drew earns Alex's trust and also becomes his savior, protector, friend, lover, his everything.
As Alex shared his story, I wept with him in his deepest despair, and I swooned with him as he experienced his most private moments of joy and love with Drew. I laughed at his outspoken words and thoughts which were so pure in their innocence. I listened to him in all his seriousness. I watched him grow with pride.
Although this book is short, it is perfect as is, no need to add to perfection! 5++++ stars!
Free story that while it has a very sad and traumatic abuse suffered by Alex it is Fairytale like in almost all other respects. Evil stepfather and horrible neglecting mother, abused and tormented by everyone, until he finds his Prince charming Drew.
Very touching story showing how life really can get better. Loved how accepting Alex's parents were, even if at times it felt a bit too accepting. I was waiting for mom to tell them "that's OK, we'll talk when you are done having sex". I also wasn't fond of how much Alex seemed to pressure Drew, especially knowing his history of sexual abuse. I realize it is hard to truly delve into that with a short story but he kept saying (along the lines of) "try it and you'll like it". Well, he had been forced to try it often and it seemed insensitive to make him work through that so quickly.
4+ ... Touching - if sometimes difficult - and beautifully written. I just loved Drew and his family, who could so clearly see the diamond in the rough that was Alex. My one qualm is the characters speak in a voice more... sophisticated than I would think they'd really talk. I suspect this is because Justin is probably way smarter than I am. Still, I was very much - and very quickly - invested in these boys and would love to read more.
Wow, that was a painful read. Not in a "this writing sure is shitty" way but in a "I can't believe that poor kid went through all that" way. I can just picture him begging people in his town to help him and getting nothing. How awful. But then comes Drew. Sweet Drew. Yes, a lot of the story was improbable but it was so sweet and hopeful which was more important. Great read!
Justin South certainly put his heart and soul into this story, each sentence in this book certainly is an evidence of his heartfelt dedication to the plight of children who are abused.
Alex and Drew’s story initially left me feeling totally chocked up and very emotional. This part in the story focused on Alex’s feeling of betrayed by those who were meant to protect him no matter what but instead they abused him in every sense. As I read this part, I felt Alex’s utter despair, pain, and distrust. This part was very painful for me to read, but then Justin changed his story line and focused on Alex’s recovery and stayed that way. It seemed almost like the writer wanted to acknowledge and respect young Alex’s pain and then move onto his healing process with a focus on the power of love and self-determination to move forward.
I felt a little disappointed that there was not much about his family after the event. I think part of my disappointment was coming from my rage over Alex’s pain and I wanted to see his family suffering for what they did to him, and I was denied this! I also wanted to see Alex raging and demanding satisfaction for his pain and suffering, but it seems Alex was emotionally more grounded than I was. After some self-reflecting, I realized where Justin was coming from: This story was not about abuse, but about personal growth. Recovery. The focus was not about rage and anger.
I also would like to add that I find the dialogue between Alex and Drew a little too sweet for my taste, but again I can see what Justin is doing. He wants to bring a balance to his story so that his readers will not be struggling with despair and hurt. I then noticed some issues with syntax but I again understand. He was trying to speak from Alex’s point of view, a youth who never had opportunity to complete his education and had some developmental problems.
This story is set in Australia so be prepared for the Aussie slangs and Aussie-English. I must say, I really like this because I consider myself as an Australian who is also happy that Justin appreciates the healing powers of our Aussie icon yummy “TimTams” and used this tasty treat in the story of Alex & Drew.
This story set in Australia is super sweet, despite the harrowing issue of severe emotional and physical child abuse it covers, and written in very flowery language. That made it difficult for me, at times, to reconcile the horror of the content with he way the author wrote about it. As a result, I am in two minds about this book.
On the one hand it is a great hurt-comfort read, where the main character (Alex, who tells the story in first person) goes from a hopeless, painful existence full of horrors no child should have to face, to a dreamlike perfect live that sounds utterly unrealistic. Since he has suffered so much beforehand, it feels wrong to begrudge him this, but it was a little much.
On the other hand the lack of realism meant I was outside the story half the time, wondering whether ADHD was really he issue, whether it made someone behave as Alex said he did, and what illegal substances all the people in his small town were on for everyone to ignore how abused Alex was? I mean, not just the neighbors, but the hospital, police, and anyone else? And that doesn't even go into Alex's curiosity about sex with Drew, while all his experiences so far have been violent and horrible.
All in all, this reads so much like a fairy tale (due to above-mentioned lack of realism), that I ended up taking it as such. And in that sense I did like this free novella. But be warned - you'll need a ability to significantly suspend your disbelief for you to be able to enjoy it for what it is. Not to mention the ability to stomach some graphic descriptions of horrid scenes of abuse.
The story of Alex & Drew by Justin South recounts with a painful yet deeply respectful narrative tone the tale of abuse and degradation heaped on Alex, an ADHD boy, by his stepfather. In the telling, we are made aware of the idea that it takes a village to hide abuse, to allow it and to condone it but it takes just one person standing up and saying, "No" to stop it. Enter, Drew a young man who finds Alex after one such episode of rape by his stepfather and decides he will help.
Justin South, while never flinching away from the harsh realities of abuse and neglect, also carefully maps out the course of healing for his young victim. This is no hastily done recovery--no--we recognize that nearly two years to the day that Drew saves Alex, they are now ready to move on in their relationship to a new level of intimacy and trust. The moment is written beautifully.
While there is minimal, on page violence, there is still the overwhelming understanding of fear and abuse and it permeates nearly every moment--save those not given over to the expression of healing and love. Overall, the writer strikes a fine balance here--giving us just enough to move our hearts to loving these boys.
I highly recommend this short story to you and hope that Mr. South will expand this work into a full length novel. He has much to say to us and we are the richer for having listened.
Every so often a story comes along that touches you. I've been fortunate with the Love is Always Write Event... I've had more than my share of "heart-hitting" stories. This is one of those. Alex and Drew is about 2 young man that meet on a day of pain. One boy, Alex, is determined to push everyone away, convinced that he's not worthy to have any friends simply because of "his faults". Drew, decides that he needs to be Alex's friend, in spite of the "snarkiness" that erupts from Alex's lips at the slightest provocation. Drew is on vacation and the boys become best friends within 14 days time; although there are heinous crimes against Alex, he is able to withstand the pain and be there for Drew. However, the relationship does not end when the vacation is over. Declarations of love are declared between the two and it seems that there may be summer love and a long-distance relationship to work through. That all changes when Alex calls Drew two weeks later, asking for help from a life-threatening situation. This story builds on what happens after that; don't be discouraged, there is still a helluva tale to tell. It's rather a long story, and it was emotional for me. It has a very good ending making it worth the time.
The connection between the MCs and their relationship? 4 stars The surrounding story? 2 stars
Average for overall rating? 3 stars
I really did enjoy the interactions between Alex & Drew. The two of them on their own and their relationship - those were some real high points in this story. I found myself rooting for them and hoping they would all work out.
The background behind all of that, though, was really jarring. Yes, this story contains difficult subject matter. But it seems just sort of 'there' in the story. The characters don't really deal with it. When it call comes out in the open, there are tears from some, but Alex himself just seems nonchalant. He just says what happened, shrugs if off, and then is instantly over most of it? I like dynamic characters but the changes he goes through in terms of his self-esteem and the processing of what he's dealt with just doesn't seem to ring true.
In the end, the book is enjoyable. And I'd probably recommend it to people who can handle the content. And it is possible to look past those other things to focus on the romantic relationship in the story and revel in the love and sweetness.
This is a touching story that transcends the tragedy and darkness at its core. The author did a beautiful job of focusing on the more positive notes of hope, love and healing while still acknowledging the pain, betrayal, fear, hate and anger that you know are present under these circumstances.
I absolutely love reading stories about survivors as well as stories about finding the one person who can light up your whole world. “Alex & Drew” was the perfect combination of survival and love, helped along by a little bit of fate and gentle persistence. I’m an eternal optimist and hopeless romantic, so I strongly believe in “it gets better” and love (in any way, shape or form) is one of the greatest treasures in life. This story held exactly the type of emotion and inspiration to bring that combination to life.
Thank you, Justin! I’m awed by the time and talent you poured into this event to bring a simple picture to life in such a compelling way, and grateful beyond words. Awesome!!! :)
Such a sweet love story with disturbing physical and sexual abuse undercurrent. I cried during the abuse parts. Alex oh Alex I am so happy you found a lovely supportive partner in Drew. We meet Alex hiding in the grasses near a swimming pond Drew comes upon him hears him crying. He stops and offers assistance h realizes he's not getting the whole story from Alex who has just been abused horribly by his step father. Drew takes Alex home Alex is grateful to have a friend as he is bullied at as school. While Drew is out of town with his family. Drew gives Alex a phone should he need to contact Drew it is hid on Drew's property thank god its there because the step father bets the hell out of Alex and Alex's neglectful mother. Drew notifies the authorities. The love between Alex and Drew is strong and beautiful. Fortunately Alex'sFather set him up real well. I would love to read more about these two. Great book Justin. Off to read Paul and Sam.
This is the story of Alex, an eighteen year old who lives through sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of his step-father and mother as well as being bullied at school. Alex's life changes when he meets Drew, the new boy that has moved to the area.
I know this story is rated fairly high by other readers and it's a nice detailed story, but I couldn't get into it that much. The story was told in too dry and formal of a style for me. Also Alex seemed too unemotional when retelling the events that happened to him.
Drew and Alex were a sweet couple.
The ending had a fairytale quality to it with everything working out perfectly for Alex and Drew. This made the conclusion hard for me to believe.
This story isn't my style, but I give it 3 stars since I liked the couple, Alex and Drew.
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time! You will go through the emotions of happiness , sadness, jubilation when Alex overcomes his problems & seeing how much people can love, support & be there for each other! I cried, laughed, rejoiced in the book! I also went through disgust at some situations & from what people in authority allowed to happen & rejoiced when they were showed justice! I recommend this book to anybody who wants to be uplifted!
I love the way he developed the characters in the story! I could not put it down until I read the whole thing! I did not finish the book until 2:30 am & have to get up at 9am but I think it was worth it! I will definitely read more books by this author because he is very talented! I hope he writes some more books about Alex & Drew! I will definitely read it!
Thanks for writing such a marvy marvy book!!

A very endearing and lovely romance. I was surprised since it is a short story and it covers child abuse and ADHD. A pretty extreme HEA where everything that could go right, goes right... but isn't that what fiction is for and wouldn't it be nice if everyone who suffered these kinds of abuse had even half of the resolution that the author came up with in this story?!
If the story had been longer, I would like to have seen more done with the ADHD. It seems to me like the Mother probably just latched onto the diagnosis, whether it was the right one or not. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis of and mistreatment of ADD and ADHD does occur and leads to all kinds of difficulties for the patient.
Very difficult subject matter. On the one hand, I'm surprised at how 'distanced' I felt from the characters, especially since the story is written in first person. (My first thought was, "Where's the rage?" But then, contemplating events in my own life, I realized that the anger is kept well buried and suppressed.) On the other hand, had that distance not been there, I'm not sure I could have continued reading about Alex's neglect and abuse.
On a lighter note, poor Freckles is in he/she limbo! ;)
